Good eats
is and that on the local
restaurant and food scene
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
The restaurant and food scene in Madison County
is moving and shaking. Check out the following recent
developments.
Ben & Joy’s adding meat market
Chad Moore and Davon Donovan, the new owners
of Ben & Joy’s Restaurant, 35 S. London St., Mount
Sterling, plan to convert part of the restaurant previously
known as the Angel Room into a market for
fresh meat. The market is tentatively slated to open
on May 1.
“We will be offering select cuts of beef, hamburgers,
steaks, sirloins, brisket, roasts, and more right from
the butcher. We’ll also give customers the option of
buying in bulk, like a quarter, half, or whole beef,”
Moore said.
The idea is to provide residents with a local place
to pick up fresh meat for cookouts, dinners, and the
like.
“We want to make it readily available for people so
they don’t have to drive 20 to 25 minutes out of the
way,” Moore said.
As for day-to-day operations of the restaurant,
Moore and Donovan took over
ownership of Ben & Joy’s on
Nov. 19. They have stuck with
the same menu the previous
owners had.
“Ben & Joy’s has been a
huge staple for almost 40
years,” said Moore, who is
originally from Grove City
and moved to the Mount Sterling
area about four years ago.
“I used to go there growing up.
We’d go for the buffet.”
As the new owners, Moore
and Donovan started off offering
the buffet on Sundays in
December and added Saturdays
in January. They now
offer the buffet on Fridays,
Saturdays, and Sundays.
The restaurant is open
every day, 7 a.m.-2 p.m. The
next step, Moore said, is to
add evening hours starting
with Fridays and Saturdays
and later adding Thursdays.
The plan is to add the evening
hours starting May 1, the
same day they hope to open
the meat market.
In related news, Moore and
Ben & Joy’s Restaurant in Mount Sterling has expanded its buffet days
to Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The restaurant’s new owners plan
to open a meat market in the restaurant in May.
On April 1, Rodney and Rebecca Rucker will open the London Farm
Fresh Market, picking up where the Procter Store is leaving off.
Donovan purchased the property at 17 E. Main St. They hope
to renovate the house that sits on the property and rent it out
for residential use. The future of the second building on the
property, formerly home to the Mad Hatter cafe, will be announced
soon.
Mad Hatter closes
Following the change in ownership of the 17 E. Main St.
property, Mount Sterling resident Becky Martin closed the
Mad Hatter, the shop she owned and operated from that location
for 5.5 years. The Mad Hatter served breakfast and lunch
and provided a place for others to sell their wares on consignment.
At least 10 vendors at a time had their items for sale at
the shop. Items included fairy gardens, dip mixes, jams, honey,
clothing, jewelry, baked goods, and home decor.
“It’s been a great ride,” said Martin, who closed the shop on
Feb. 10. “I feel like it was a great thing for the community. I
know we’ll be missed.”
Mad Cow Bar & Grill in London opened last fall and
offers lunch and dinner every day, plus brunch on
Saturday and Sunday. A liquor permit was recently
shifted into the owners’ names.
The London historic review board recently approved
signage for Sammi Faye’s, a cafe slated to
open this spring on South Main Street.
She said she has leads on another business venture in
Mount Sterling but, for now, is taking time off to regroup.
Legion expands food offerings
American Legion Post 417, 27 Clark St., Mount Sterling,
has expanded its food service options. As of Feb. 11, the post
serves breakfast using recipes Martin shared from her former
Mad Hatter menu. The Legion’s breakfast hours are Monday-
Saturday, 8-11 a.m.
The Legion also has expanded its lunch hours, days, and
menu. For the past few years, the post has been open for lunch
three days a week. As of Feb. 13, they are open five days a
week: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.;
Wednesday and Friday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
Every day except Fridays, the Legion serves lunch items,
including soups and sandwich wraps inspired by Mad Hatter
Mayor shares information via Weekend Update
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
London Mayor Patrick Closser recently
started what he calls the “Weekend Update.”
Once a week, he posts what he has
been up to as mayor, what is going on
around the city, and news from local government
meetings.
“This is just another way we are looking
to get as much information out as possible
to the citizens,” he said.
The updates can be accessed via Facebook
(look for “Mayor Patrick J. Closser”)
and on the city’s website at londonohio.gov.
In a recent Weekend Update, Closser reported
he had met with two different sets of
developers. One is interested in bringing
apartments or condominiums to London.
The meeting served as an information gathering
session for the developer.
The other group of developers is interested
in purchasing and renovating three
properties in downtown London—22 S.
Main, 106-114 S. Main St., and 116-122 S.
Main St.
“They are very community oriented,
wanting the best for London, and will complete
surveys to see what kind of businesses
people would like to see in those buildings,”
Closser said. “They have done many rehab
projects in historic downtowns, including
Old Hilliard and Plain City.”
Public hearings
In other development news, changes
have been made to the plan for the Keny
Station Apartments complex on Keny
Boulevard. The public hearing date has
been rescheduled for March 16 during city
council’s regular meeting which starts at
6:30 p.m. at city hall.
The city planning commission approved
a preliminary development plan for the Lexington
Green housing development, situated
between Eagleton and Keny Boulevard
out to State Route 38. City council held a
first reading on the plan on Feb. 16. A public
hearing is set for April 6.
The planning commission also approved
an amendment to the zoning map for a
small area encompassed by Lincoln Avenue,
Fairview Avenue, Antietam Avenue, and
Toland Street. The area is home to nine
properties and is currently zoned commercial,
even though all the properties are residences.
The current zoning designation
dates back to when one of the properties
was a business. The proposal, which must
be approved by council, is to update the zoning
to residential to match current usage. A
public hearing is set for the April 6 council
meeting.
Police department
The police department implemented a
new body camera system on Feb. 1. The new
system allows the older cameras that are no
longer supported by the maintenance plan
to be used by officers working special duty
and other events where more than 10 body
cameras are used at the same time.
Parks, recreation, and fireworks
Council set aside $20,000 for this year’s
recipes. Fridays are reserved for fried perch
and shrimp all day. On Wednesdays, the
post offers special dinners, such as lasagna,
meatloaf, and chicken and noodles, along
with their regular lunch menu.
The public is welcome. Legion membership
is not required to enjoy breakfast or
lunch. Eat-in and carryout options are offered.
Liquor Permit for Mad Cow
On Feb. 16, London city council approved
a liquor permit transfer for Mad Cow Bar &
Grill, 18 E. High St., London. Until the
transfer, Mad Cow was using the permit
under a manager’s agreement with the former
owners of the property. The transfer
puts the permit in Mad Cow’s name.
Locally owned by brothers Jesse and Jeremy
Fields and their father, Dennis Fields,
Mad Cow Bar & Grill opened on Oct. 15.
The business serves lunch and dinner every
day, plus brunch 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday
and Sunday.
Among the signature menu items are
smoked chicken wings, brisket, and pulled
pork. The Mad Cow Burger is topped with
barbecue sauce, onion tanglers, candied
bacon, smoked gouda cheese, and habanero
bacon jam on a pretzel bun. Cheese curds,
cauliflower wings, salads, and chicken tenders
are some of the other offerings. The
kitchen also serves up dessert and a kid’s
menu.
The brunch menu includes chicken and
waffles, biscuits and gravy, French toast,
and the Mad Cow breakfast plate (eggs,
also are included on the brunch menu.
The full bar serves beer on draft and in
bottles, as well as liquor, including signature
bourbons, seven days a week.
Independence Day fireworks. The display is
scheduled for July 3. Last year, the city
spent $15,000 on fireworks.
Council voted to update minimum pay
rates for parks and recreation employees to
reflect the current minimum wage.
Live bands perform on Friday nights.
Saturday is karaoke night. Families with
Signage approved for Sammi Faye’s
Sammi Faye’s is a new cafe slated to
open this spring at 25 S. Main St., London.
The city of London’s historic review board
recently approved signage for the cafe. Visit
Procter Store Change
On April 1, the Procter Store, 119 S.
Main St., London, will become the London
Farm Fresh Market. Rodney and Rebecca
Rucker are taking over operations. They
plan to bring in more produce, expand store
hours, and increase vendors. A grand opening
is set for April 2.
The Procter Camp & Conference Center
started the indoor farmers market in 2019.
The upcoming transition will allow Procter,
located on State Route 38 in London, to return
its focus to its main mission of being a
summer camp. Procter plans to increase
programming and continue operating its
six-acre hog, chicken and vegetable farm.
The farm will stock the London Farm Fresh
Market with meats, produce, and Community
Supported Agriculture offerings.
The Procter Store will remain open on
Fridays and Saturdays through March.
hosted its first annual rabbit hunt. A total of
54 hunters in three-person teams competed,
harvesting a total of 85 rabbits. The winning
team took home $590 in prize money. The
rabbits were cleaned and a Butcher Block
chef prepared hasenpfeffer (rabbit stew) as a
free meal for hunt participants.

Teen Night in Mt. Sterling
Free produce market on March 22
Buckeye Community School, 177 W. High St., London, hosts a
free produce market from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the fourth Wednesday
of each month. Upcoming dates for the market are March 22, April
26, and May 24.
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
A group of teens dedicated to lifting up their peers is
hosting a Teen Night from 6 to 8 p.m. March 10 at the
Mount Sterling Community Center, 164 E. Main St.
The event is open to Madison County students in
grades 9-12. Admission is free. Plenty of fun activities
are planned.
The hosts are members of Madison County Prevention’s
youth ambassadors program. Madison County
Prevention is an affiliate of Madison County’s Family
and Children First Council. The program’s goal is to
provide positive activities and tools to enhance teens’
well-being.
The March 10 event will feature a volleyball tournament,
the Just Dance video game, a yoga and mindfulness
class, and an art class. Creations from the art class
will be donated to local organizations, such as senior
centers, nursing homes, and daycares. The activities are
designed to promote physical health, mind and body enrichment,
and generosity.
Kahoots Trivia, Youth MOVE peer-to-peer support
groups , prizes, and giveaways also are planned. Refreshments
will be available at a small cost.
“It’s a fun opportunity to engage with other youth in
Madison County,” said Amanda Hampton, a certified
prevention specialist with Madison County Prevention.
Hampton and Larry Newton, who serves on the
Counter Drug Task Force with the National Guard,
serve as adult allies to the youth ambassador program.
Youth ambassadors hail from all parts of Madison
County. Current ambassadors are Isabella Kerry, Sean
Johns, Athena Powell, Emma Wethington, Emma
Mounts, Mackenna Mitchell, and Ariel Cochrane. Two
more students will soon join the ranks.
The group’s Teen Night idea is the result of careful
study of their peers’ needs. They started by creating a
survey which they distributed to high schoolers across
the county during the 2021-22 school year. They learned
that teens’ main concerns included mental health, emotional
health, and discrimination. Survey respondents
pointed to a variety of causes for these concerns, from
pandemic-related social distancing and isolation to social
media, bullying, relationship troubles, and pressure
from school, guardians, and peers. They also mentioned
a lack of positive things to do in the county.
During the 2022-23 school year, the ambassadors
completed training sessions to learn about risk factors
and protective factors and how to improve the overall
well-being of themselves and their peers.
“They want to share this information with their
peers through positive social engagements, educational
platforms, and added support for young people who
might be struggling,” Hampton said.
The ambassadors decided to hold quarterly events
for high-schoolers, rotating locations among Mount
Sterling, West Jefferson, London, and Plain City. The
March 10 event in Mount Sterling is their first.
“Afterwards, they will evaluate how things went to
see if their short-term and long-term goals are met, then
they will start planning for the next event,” Hampton
said.
Anyone who would like to know more about the upcoming
Teen Night or the Madison County Prevention
Youth Ambassadors can contact Amanda Hampton at
amanda.hampton@madison.oh.gov or (740) 852-6342.
The program welcomes anyone who would like to
serve as an adult ally, set up a resource table, and/or
donate funds or items for giveaways and raffles at the
program’s events.
Southeastern staging ‘e SpongeBob Musical’
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Southeastern High School’s spring stage production is sure to
make a splash.
The Trojan theater department will present “The SpongeBob
Musical” on March 10 at 7 p.m. and March 11 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The show is based on the animated children’s television series,
“SpongeBob SquarePants.”
“We chose this musical because, first off, as an art teacher,
there’s not a day that goes by that someone isn’t drawing or mentioning
something about SpongeBob episodes,” said Laura Madden,
director.
“Plus, the show really fits our situation as a small school because
it has gender flexible casting. All of the parts can be cast as male or
female. We typically have more girls than boys going out for our
shows, so this makes it easier to do casting.”
Madden also loves the show’s music. All of the songs are written
by famous singers and bands, such as John Legend, David Bowie,
Cyndi Lauper, They Might Be Giants, and Panic at the Disco.
“The songs are very catchy. There are a lot of earworms that get
Playing lead characters in Southeastern High School’s upcoming production of “The SpongeBob Musical,” are:
(front row, from left) Trenton Davis as Squidward, Elizabeth Beam as Karen the Computer, Peyton Hamilton as
Patrick Star, Caitlyn Marshall as Pearl Krabs; (back row) Cody Clark as Plankton, Ethan Heskett as SpongeBob),
Ella McCombs as Sandy Cheeks, and Justin Callicoat as Mr. Krabs.
stuck in your head very easily,” she said.
The show’s storyline takes place in the undersea city
of Bikini Bottom. All is good until the residents find out
the nearby volcano, Mt. Humongous, threatens to erupt
in the next 48 hours and destroy the city.
SpongeBob SquarePants, played by senior Ethan
Heskett, and Sandy Cheeks, played by senior Ella Mc-
Combs, try to save the city through science and invention.
Meanwhile, Sheldon J. Plankton (junior Cody
Clark) works on a scheme to hypnotize the residents
into loving his chum burgers, and Patrick Star (junior
Peyton Hamilton) finds an adoring cult of sardines that
treat him like a leader.
“Ethan has been in shows since he was a freshman.
He is amazing. He has lines in just about every scene,”
Madden said.
McCombs is lending her strong singing voice to the
production in her second year on stage. Hamilton, who
has been in shows since eighth grade, has nailed
Patrick’s personality and voice. Clark is prepping to perform
a speed rap.
Among the others in the cast are sophomore Trenton
Davis, who has learned to tap dance with two extra legs
attached for his role as Squidward Q. Tentacles. Justin
Callicoat is another sophomore getting his feet wet on
stage as Mr. Krabs.
Freshman Elizabeth Beam plays Karen, Plankton’s
computer wife; she also sings in the chorus and dances
with the ensemble. Senior Caitlyn Marshall plays Pearl,
Mr. Krabs’s daughter. As someone who has been in
stage productions since her freshman year, Marshall
helps less experienced castmates find their way on
stage.
Madden says the cast as a whole is getting a kick out
of the show selection.
“I think they think it’s great now that they are seeing
it all come together with the props and costumes. They
are enjoying all the references to the various episodes
they are familiar with,” she said.
Speaking of props and costumes, the sets are fun and
funky, using balloons to represent bubbles, umbrellas
to evoke jellyfish, and pool noodles to create coral reefs.
The costumes aren’t what most might guess. Instead of
looking like the cartoon characters, the actors are the
human embodiment of the characters, Madden said.
“They will be wearing clothes that remind us of the
characters. For example, Ethan will be wearing a yellow
shirt, brown pants, and a red tie as SpongeBob. For
Patrick, Peyton will be wearing a pink shirt and green
beach shorts with purple flowers, and he’ll have pink hair.”
Joining Madden in putting on Southeastern’s production
of “The SpongeBob Musical’ are David Kestner,
Southeastern band and choir director, and Rachel Kestner
who are serving as the musical directors and choreographers.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students. Students
can purchase tickets in advance during the school
day in the guidance office. Tickets also will be available
at the door at show times. Doors open 30 minutes prior
to each show.

them! Terry never knew a stranger and enjoyed hanging
out with her friends and riding her Harley Davidson.
Stoll defends state swimming title
He’s about as humble and kind as they
come outside the water, but make no mistake,
once the race starts, he’s the ultimate
competitor. Jonathan Alder senior Eli Stoll
used that competitiveness to defend his Div.
II 100-yard backstroke state title on Feb. 24
at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.
Stoll set the stage for his championship
repeat by dominating his heat during prelims
on Feb. 23, qualifying for the finals
with the top time of 48.46 seconds, just 0.15
seconds away from the Div. II state record.
Despite being disappointed in his finals
time, Stoll earned the top spot on the
podium for the second straight year, besting
Krys Gorski from Willoughby Andrews Osborne
by 0.05 seconds.
Stoll, who is committed to swim for The
Ohio State University next season, also finished
second in the 200-yard individual
London freshman Griffin Lotton prepares
to start his 500-yard freestyle race at the
state meet.
medley, the same place he earned last season.
Stoll was joined at the state meet by two
Madison County freshmen. Swimming in
the 100-yard breaststroke, Alder’s Lily
Schneider posted a personal best in the prelims,
earning her a berth in the state consolation
finals. Unphased by the capacity
crowd and the aspect of swimming in the
state finals, Schneider won her consolation
heat, placing ninth overall.
The previous week, London freshman
Griffin Lotton nabbed the 32nd and final
qualifying spot in the 500-yard freestyle
and was thrilled just to earn the trip to Canton.
Like Schneider, however, he didn’t let
the state stage intimidate him. Lotton used
a strong surge during the last 150 yards to
earn a personal best time of 5:02.70, placing
him 28th in Ohio’s Div. II this year.
Madison County’s
Most Experienced
Monument Company
Katie Marie Hooker, 36, of Mount Sterling, OH, passed away
February 14, 2023, surrounded by her family.
She was born May 19th, an unyielding Taurus, in the birth place of
Rock-n- Roll, Memphis Tennessee, to her loving parents, Timothy and
Laura Hooker. Having lived in Mississippi as a toddler, Katie earned
the nickname, “Mississippi Squirrel” for her clever way of scooting
around and a knack for finding M&M’s to stow away.
Katie had many wonderful memories that she always cherished: 2005
graduate of Madison Plains High School (even if she did gain a reputation
of cutting class), time she spent cuddling with her then
puppy Quinn, getting to see the family grow with nieces and nephews (Dillon, Roselyn, Benjamin
II, Kaeleigh, Colton, and Esther), traveling out west to Colorado and ride a cog to the
heights of Pike’s Peak, touring the Wizard Of Oz Museum in Kansas was a succession to her sister’s
desires veering off course to Colorado but Katie ended up enjoying being there with her
family, being spun around the dance floor in her wheelchair and testing out new stunts, watching
her VHS copy of Cinderella till it would play no more, reading a plethora of romance novels,
attending many country concerts where she has met so many amazing artists. She had many
wonderful moments and lived her life with no regrets.
Even though Katie lived a complex life with relentless health issues stemming from Spina Bifida,
her desire to enjoy life, love her family, attend concerts, travel out west and her love of
the arts kept Katie pushing for better days and solutions to obstacles she faced. Resilient, stubborn,
passionate, she handled unsavory moments with realistic and dark humor, often causing
people to question the entire family’s mental well-being. Katie never swayed away from her
humor, enjoying the gasps and looks from others when she delivered her messages.
Katie loved her mom and dad deeply, they were Katie’s biggest fan, greatest support, and provided
lifelong loving care. She loved siblings through inevitable growing pains and she loved
her nieces and nephews as her own. Katie loved her dog Quinn who proceeded Katie in death,
and she leaves behind her fur baby Mable, that will bring comfort to all during this time.
We end this memorial of Katie with one of her favorites, a country music hit by her favorite
artist “Days go by, I can feel them flyin’ like a hand out the window in the wind. The cars go by,
it’s all we’ve been given. So you better start livin’ right now. ‘Cause days go by” Keith Urban.
Funeral services are under the arrangements are under the direction of the Mayhew-Brown
Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life service will held at a later date at the convenience of the
family. Condolences may be sent to the family at: www.mayhew-brownfuneralhome.com
[R.C. 3107.11]
To: Trisha Edwards
You are hereby notified that on 11/30/22, Marang, Benjamin and Marang, Sarah A residing at
minimis contact with the minor for a period of at least one year immediately preceding the
filing of the adoption petition or the placement of the minor in the home of the petitioner.
