MAYOR PHIL Mauger’s family
charitable foundation has
stepped in to replace a disability
swing stolen from a playground
popular with disabled children.

swing at New
Brighton’s
Phil
Mauger
Rawhiti
Domain after
the callous
theft last
week. Mauger’s construction
company funded the initial
construction of the playground
several years ago.
A number of native trees
planted in the park have also
been recently stolen.
Guardians of Rāwhiti
Domain chair Cathy Baker
discovered the disability nest
swing had been swiped last
Thursday.
“I got back into the car and
just cried, it was such a low
trick,” she said.
“To have the swing removed
is beyond belief, really. They
cut it from the top and took
the chains – we’re absolutely
gutted.”
The playground took seven
years to construct following the
February 22, 2011 earthquake.
The undertaking to have the
playground built was such that
Christchurch East MP Poto
Williams gained Government
funding for the $600,000
project.
“It was an essential part of
quake recovery for children
in the east of Christchurch,”

Baker said.
“There’s still some with
anxiety from (the earthquake)
so it was believed this would
be a healing place where
they could play in a safe
environment.”
It’s a popular playground
with the disabled community,
said Baker, which regularly
utilises the disabled swing
and other playground
features in a relaxed playing
environment.
“I don’t know (the offender’s)
motive, why they did this – if
they wanted an addition to
their backyard, but they have
stolen from children,” she said.

SOUTH BRIGHTON has
overcome testing conditions
to finish as top overall club
at the Canterbury junior surf
life saving championships,
which were completed over the
weekend.
South Brighton finished on
415 points at New Brighton
Beach, adding to the 114
points the club was awarded in
January before a shark sighting
forced postponement of
remaining events.
Although Sumner managed
more first placings than South
Brighton, Sumner ended
second with 398 points, while
Taylors Mistake finished third
with 283.
South Brighton had five athletes
awarded the top overall
competitor for their age group,
the highest number of any
competing club.
Chloe Jorgensen was the
top under-12 girl, winning the
beach flags and beach sprint in
her age group, plus two relays.
Emma Cox and Louis Fong
were the top boys’ and girls’
competitors in the under-11s,
while Hugh McLellan tied with
Taylors Mistake’s
Sam Clark for top under-10 boy.

Young band flying high
after ‘bloody brilliant’ festival

YOUNG BAND Zephyr are
on cloud nine after playing to
thousands of people at Selwyn
Sounds.
The members are all in year
13, with drummer Mya Cawood,
17, at Avonside Girls’ High,
guitarist Reuben Anderson, 17,
at Christchurch Boys’ High, and
bassist Scarlett Robson, 17, and
singer Cleo Cavell, 16, both at
Christchurch Girls’ High.
Cawood said playing to
between 4000 and 5000 people
was “bloody brilliant.”
“We played well as a band
and met a lot of amazing
people – Dave Dobbyn, Mi-Sex,
Greg Johnson, he was a bit of a
favourite, he was a really nice
man. Sometimes I pinched
myself and thought: ‘What are
we doing here?’
“It was such an amazing
opportunity, really.”
Cawood had a great time in
the band’s engine room, keeping
her mates in time from her
throne on the drums.
“We played perfectly,
everything went as planned, it
was a really good experience
being here. All thanks to David
Parlane.”
The band was chosen to open
the day-long Selwyn Sounds
music festival at Lincoln Domain
on Saturday by promoter and
festival director David Parlane.
Cawood said it was an exciting
experience.
“It really does amp you up
playing to a bigger crowd, gets
you really excited, it is so good.”
Said Anderson: “It went about
as well as it could have, we all
played really well, I’m proud of
the rest of the band.
“We’re really thankful to him,
we really appreciate it.”
Robson said playing in front
of a big crowd was a big step
forward for the band.
“The energy is completely
different, it was full on – so
much fun.”
They estimated 4000 to 5000
people when they went on stage
at 10.50am.
“It was about 10 times bigger
than the biggest crowd we
played to when we played at
the Rockquest finals last year,”
Anderson said.

the crowd and received many
positive comments.
Said Robson: “When we were
playing, we got some good claps
and ‘whoops’ and what not. Then
afterwards, when we went out
into the crowds, people stopped
us and gave us really nice
compliments. That was really
nice to hear.”
They agreed playing on the
same stage at Sir Dave Dobbyn,
Gin Wigmore, Stellar*, Greg
Johnson, and Hoodoo Gurus
was the definite highlight of their
career to date.
The band plays at The Bower
in North New Brighton each
Sunday as part of a three-month
residency.
Playing at Selwyn Sounds and
at The Bower every weekend will
help their career.
Said Anderson: “I think it’ll
really help us get out into the
local music scene.
“A lot of people who watched
us were from Christchurch and
the surrounding area. I think
it’ll really help our publicity. As
Scarlett said, so many people
came up to us afterwards and
said how much they enjoyed our
set.
“We had a lot of people say
they’re going to come to our next
gig and they’re going to look out
for us. It is really encouraging to
hear that people are digging the
sort of music we’re playing.”
Zephyr played some Led
Zeppelin and Blondie covers,
as well as their own originals
during the 40-minute set at
Lincoln.

Preserving summer’s goodness for later
Keep some of the
departing sun around a
little longer by storing it
in jars. For Nigel Slater,
preserving tomatoes is
an annual ritual that lets
summer play out in the
cooler months to come
THERE IS MUCH to do in the
kitchen. I made the last of the
plums into jam last week – a
softly-set version for spooning
over yoghurt – there are
damsons to be frozen for winter
and I just managed to catch the
tail end of the decent apricots
before they disappeared.
More organised cooks than me
will have done this a couple of
weeks ago, but hey ho.
What matters is that I have
something of the departing
summer on the shelf for the cold
months to come.
I spent an entire morning
this week preserving tomatoes
in olive oil: fat-bellied jars of
orange, red and yellow fruits to
use during the winter months. It
has become an annual job, one
of the more calming of tasks,
usually on one of those days
that, despite the sun, feels faintly
autumnal.
The tomatoes are skinned
and seeded, then cooked slowly
in deep, green oil with spikes
of rosemary, peppercorns and
thyme. They will keep in the cool
– I put them on the top shelf of

the fridge – a squirrel store for
the first frosts.
Once the tomatoes are soft and
starting to brown here and there,
crush them into a rough-edged
sauce.
The tomatoes will be brought
out as an instant sauce for pasta.
Mostly for orecchiette, a shape
that will hold the tomatoes and
any other vegetables – peas,
chopped green beans – in their
hollows. I use them in a salad,
too, their oil as the dressing,
tossing them with toasted bread,
olives and wedges of crisp lettuce,
the bread sponging up the
herby juice.
The tomatoes may also find
themselves baked with whole
fish.
They are good for toast, the
bread cut thick, the hot, herbscented
oil soaking through the
toast, topped with the tomatoes,
anchovy fillets and black olives.
A taste of summer at any time of
year.
As with any form of preserving
there are a few rules of which we
should probably take note.
Your jars do need to be sterilised
before use – it is crucial to
the success of the recipe. Sterilise
your jars with boiling water or
bake them, empty, in a cool oven
and let them dry naturally or use
a spotlessly clean tea towel.
While I am happy to reuse
the rubber seals over and over
again for dried goods, such as
pasta, I use new ones, ensuring a
tight seal, for any bottled fruit or
vegetables.
The jars should be stored in
a cool, dark place once they are
ready, though I tend to keep
mine in the fridge. The oil may
solidify in the cold, but will
return to liquid at room temperature.
The recipe can be multiplied
happily, should you have a glut of
homegrown fruits.

Makes 2 × 750g storage jars
Ingredients
1kg tomatoes, medium sized
1kg cherry tomatoes
6 bushy sprigs rosemary
12 black peppercorns
8 cloves, peeled garlic

Directions
Put the kettle on. Cut a small
cross at the tip of each of the
medium tomatoes and put them
in a heatproof bowl. When the
water boils, pour it over the
tomatoes and leave them for 4 or
5 minutes. Remove the tomatoes
from the water, then peel and
discard the skins.
Halve the tomatoes
horizontally, then use a small
teaspoon to remove the seeds.
Place the peeled and seeded
tomatoes, cut side up and tightly
packed, in a roasting tin.
Set the oven at 120degC.
Slice the cherry tomatoes in
half, but don’t skin them, remove
the seeds with a teaspoon and
tuck them among the larger
tomatoes.
Push the rosemary,
peppercorns, garlic and thyme
among the tomatoes. Scatter over
the salt and sugar, pour over the
olive oil and place in the oven.
Leave to bake for 3 hours, then
remove.
Sterilise the storage jars, either
by baking them or by pouring
boiling water into them, tipping
it out then leaving them to
dry.
While they are still hot, spoon
in the tomatoes, herbs and garlic
and pour over the olive oil and
juices. Seal, cool, then refrigerate
until needed.
