ADVERTORIAL Jenny Dabbs & J Dabbs Design Being Different and Enjoying It Sarah Rein Jenny Dabbs had a somewhat non-traditional entry into the world of design but that has not impeded the tremendous growth her business has undergone in the last fifteen years. If anything, Jenny’s career trajectory may have risen faster because of it. And, to be clear, that’s for career number two in her life. In early adulthood, Jenny worked as a nurse. But she’d always been interested in design, architecture, landscaping…anything that added to a space’s character and beauty. When she and her husband moved their family of four from Jackson back to her hometown of Philadelphia, they bought a run-down home in the lovely, wooded neighborhood she grew up in. It ended up becoming her first big project. “We didn’t have money at the time to hire architects and designers, so I read and studied and figured out how to do it myself! After 18 months and a total gut and rebuild, we had our home. And it’s just great.” It must be, because people began asking her for advice regarding their own homes. In what must be a profoundly humble statement, Jenny “winged it” - learning the craft as she practiced it. She started out doing small projects like paint selections and flooring ideas. Today, her portfolio includes multi-million dollar estates with projects and clients from 30A to Atlanta. Based in Philadelphia, Miss., Jenny is always on the go and is in the Jackson and Starkville areas on an almost weekly basis. For many years, Jenny channeled her creativity into her first business venture - The Potting Shed, a high-end garden and gift shop in Philadelphia. When it opened in 2005, her son Henry was only 18 months old and her daughter was six. And her husband, Andy, had opened a surgery clinic just a few years prior. In the midst of that busy season, Jenny was able to meet scores of people from the community. One of them, Melody Vowell, frequently went to Jenny with her design and decorating questions because she liked Jenny’s taste so much. And then, in 2017, when she decided to build a home, she hired Jenny as her consultant during the design and decorating phases. “Jenny has a way of bridging the gap between what the client wants and the path to get there. For instance, you may have a picture of a kitchen you like, but you have to make decisions during each step of the building process to achieve that same feel in your own home. Jenny was my go-to person for that. She interviews her clients to understand their vision and their particular style–being mindful of individual functional needs and budget considerations,” Vowell stated. As The Potting Shed grew, Jenny decided to move it into a historic home in downtown Philadelphia that she then renovated herself. She sold her business in 2014, but hung onto the building. After a year-long sabbatical to travel the country with her daughter who was playing tournament softball, Jenny joined the Antique Shops of Jackson and reopened her retail business, while still doing renovations, new construction and consulting. In 2021, Jenny decided to move JDabbs Design back home to Philadelphia. She approached the owner of a historic building that used to house The Busy Bee Cafe, a 1960s staple in downtown Philadelphia. Having just renovated the second floor of his building into New York-style loft apartments, Douglas Hudson was immediately interested in seeing what Jenny could make of the first level of his old, neglected building, now known as The Busy Bee Suites. “I knew she had an amazing sense of style and a gift for interior design. I was particular about the feel that I envisioned, and she was on board. She immediately went to work exposing ceiling beams in some areas, repairing tin ceilings in other areas, and exposing red brick under the stucco walls. I was very involved in the beginning of the renovation, but soon realized that Jenny could be trusted to transform the space into what we had agreed it should be.” Shortly after, Jenny acquired a historic, abandoned Western Auto warehouse just three buildings down from the Busy Bee. It became the latest addition to the collection of JDabbs buildings and has operated as another showroom and gathering spot for Jenny’s friends and customers. She recently purchased a baby grand for the space to use for events and open houses. Hometown MADISON • 27
