Congratulations to Christian Brothers College
and Presentation Brothers College on reaching
today’s final of the Pinergy Munster Schools
Boys Senior Cup here in Musgrave Park. Both
sides reached the final in dramatic style after
two cracking semi-finals.
The Munster Schools Boys Senior Cup is
one of the flagship events on the domestic
calendar and the memories will last a lifetime
plus the friendships made along the way. To
all the teams and players that participated in
this year’s competition, well done and I hope
the experience will stand to you into the future
both on and off the field.
Both schools have a long and proud tradition
in this competition which is now in its 114th
year. To have an all-Cork derby game adds a
little more spice to the event. Munster Schools
Senior Cup medals are not easy to come by and
are hard earned. I would like to wish both teams
the very best of luck, whatever the outcome
today.
I would like to thank Pinergy for their kind and
continued sponsorship of this competition, it is
much appreciated. A thank you to the Munster
Schools Committee, who organise and oversee
this competition and to all who contributed in
any way to getting today’s final played.
Lastly a thank you to the Munster Association
of Referees for your ongoing officiating
throughout the season. Best of luck to Eoghan
Cross in today’s game. We need more referees,
so for those of you on the sidelines and in the
stands today – some food for thought! You
could be the next Joy Neville or Andy Brace.

IT WOULD NOT HAPPEN TODAY
The 1916 final, or more specifically the
celebrations that followed, spawned one
of the most bizarre incidents the Munster
Schools Senior Cup has ever seen. Jubilant
Christian Brothers College supporters
celebrating their 3-1 final victory over local
rivals Pres at the Mardyke were mistaken
by a local Daily Mail reporter as dissenting
rioters, venting their feelings by ‘waving
flags and blowing bugles, while others more
fearless…threw explosives in the shape of
Chinese crackers amongst the crowd.’
next day, eventually escalating right to the
House of Commons on the 7th of March the
following year through a complaint made by
the Lord Mayor of Cork. The following day
the paper issued a formal apology for causing
‘so much’ local indignation and illfeeling,
and that the paper made a donation
to the poor box.
The first, and probably last time a Munster
Schools match will ever be discussed at
Parliament!
A terse riposte came in the shape of a letter
which appeared in the Cork Examiner the

SCHOOLS BATTLE IT OUT
FOR GARRETT FITZGERALD CUP
Last season, the Pinergy Munster Schools
Senior Cup trophy was officially named the
Garrett Fitzgerald Cup as a fitting tribute
and acknowledgement of the former CEO’s
contribution to the schools’ game in the
province.
Fitzgerald, who passed away in February
2020, was at the helm of Munster Rugby
for twenty years and prior to that held
numerous coaching roles across schools,
club, and representative sides.
As a player he won a Munster Schools
Senior Cup with CBC in 1971 and later
coached the school to a total of five Munster
Senior Cup titles guiding teams during a
highly successful period when claiming four
successive Senior Cups from 1997 to 2000.
CBC remain the only school to hold this
honour having previously achieved the feat
in the 1970s.
In November 2021, Garrett’s wife Áine
O’Donnell and daughter Megan attended
an honorary event at the school recognising
the four-in-a-row success and fittingly the
Schools Senior Cup from that period, and
the now christened Garrett Fitzgerald Cup,
were both on display.
Commenting on the cup
recognition, Áine O’Donnell
said, “Having this historic cup
named after Garrett is a lovely
tribute to what he achieved
and to remember what the schools’ game,
and the grassroots game overall, meant to
him.
“He was a huge believer in young people
and wanting them to reach their potential.
Winning this cup recognises excellence
and achieving one’s potential and having
Garrett’s name associated with it is a huge
honour.”

The schools who have won the Pinergy
Munster Schools Boys Senior Cup the
most times renew their rivalry today
in what promises to be a cracking and
intense final. Christians will be hoping
to replicate their victory from the last
time they played in a final in 2019, while
Presentation last won the trophy on the
field of play in 2017.
The sides began the competition in a
head-to-head battle, where the Sidney
Hill school won the right to advance
straight into the semi-finals with a
compelling 27-26 victory. After Daniel
Rock opened the scoring for CBC, Pres
responded with tries from James Wixted
and James O’Leary before half-time
with another Harry Murphy touch-down
extending Pres to a 19-5 lead.
The score was 26-15 approaching the
final few minutes, with hooker Adam
Wrona powering over for Christians
and Liam Tuohy helping extend Pres’
advantage. The extremely impressive
Wrona crashed over again, with
Benjamin Lynch crucially converting
before a last gasp score by winger
Christopher Barrett secured a dramatic
victory for Christians. While CBC take
the bragging rights, all that showed
ahead of today’s game is how well
matched the sides are.
The Pres team responded in the best
possible fashion with a dominant 52-8
win over Rockwell. Jamie O’Leary
and Rory O’Shaugnessy each scored
a brace of tries before the break with
Ben O’Connor, Daniel Fahy, Luke Sisk-
O’Mahony and Ben O’Connor rounded
off the try scoring.
The Cork schools then faced very
tough Limerick opposition in the semifinals.
Christians took on Crescent
Comprehensive and got off to a strong
start. Tries again by Wrona and Barrett
along with five points from the boot of
Benjamin Lynch put them 15-3 in front.
Crescent responded strongly to secure a
draw and a replay in Thomond Park.
Meanwhile, the next day, Presentation
faced St Munchin’s. Pres took control
from early on but a sticky determined
Munchin’s team fought right until the
end. They scored a total of five tries in
a 35-29 win with Tom Coughlan, Gene
O’Leary Kareem, James O’Leary, and
Fionn Russell all scoring tries. Ben
O’Connor notched 15 points with a try
and five conversions.
With their own place in the final secured,
Pres awaited the victors of the replay of
the other semi-final in Thomond Park.
It was that player Adam Wrona again
who took the game by the scruff of the
neck. Backed up by his powerful wellorganised
pack, Wrona crashed over for
his fourth and fifth tries this season early
on. Benjamin Lynch was also enjoying a
fine display, kicking his team into a 20-
12 lead at the break.
Barrett again showed great finishing
ability, but the game did see an injury to
the reliable Lynch with Patrick O’Shea
stepping in as an able replacement.
Wrona then crashed over and the score
was 34-15 and while Crescent launched
a big late comeback, Christians did more
than enough to secure their place in
today’s final.
