Where We’re Eating 

Here’s what the EZ team were chowing on this week 

Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: Westside Market on Broadway in Cape May! This local 

staple reopened for the season on March 3 and we had been counting 

the days. It’s only about two minutes away from Exit Zero, so this is a 

spot we frequently visit... not to mention the delicious food. 

Uncle Bill’s 

The vibe: We ordered online — so convenient — and we ran in to 

pick it up just 15 minutes later! Owner Kristen Angeli was behind the 

counter and it’s always nice to see her. She’s so kind and welcoming, 

and helped redirect us to the pick-up counter. Their reopening includes 

some exciting change like moving the pick-up area farther off to the left 

to open up space in the center of the market. They also reorganized the 

store a bit with their fully stacked deli taking centerstage straight back

when you walk in. They’ve got household items, packages goods, cold

drinks, candy and treats plus some local goods like items from Cape 

May Peanut Butter. The offer so much in the space they have including 

some DELICIOUS food for breakfast, lunch and dinner! 

The food: Breakfast from Westside never disappoints — and it’s 

only served until 11:30am, so keep an eye on the time. Katie and Rickey 

both went for the Broadway sandwich — scrambled eggs, American 

cheese, tots and pork roll on a long roll with the side of cheese sauce. 

Jack was having a tough time deciding between that and the Southwest 

breakfast bowl, but Nicole pointed out that he’ll inevitably get half of 

Katie’s sandwich anyway, so go for the bowl... she was right FYI. Nicole 

enjoyed avocado toast and added eggs to it. It was a filling way to start 

the day, and we can’t wait until they’re open full-time. 

The takeaway: Speaking of which, Westside Market is open Fri-Sun 

from 9am to 4pm. They have some new menu items including some St. 

Patrick’s Day specials. Try the Irish Breakfast, Guinness Irish Beef Stew 

Mon-Fri 7am-2pm | Sat-Sun 6:30am-2pm 

and Corned Beef and Cabbage available all month long. Be sure to keep 

an eye on their Facebook page where they’ll keep you updated on all 

their weekly specials. Did we mention they have catering and hoagie

Whenever I start seeing St Patty’s 

Day banners sprouting from 

porches, my mind naturally 

veers toward Ospreys. The 

first returning Osprey typically 

arrives on March 17. While the Osprey’s association 

with St. Patrick is serendipitous, the 

bird is linked to Alexander Wilson (1766- 

1813). 

Known as the Father of American 

Ornithology, Wilson resided in Philadelphia, 

and made four trips to our region in the early 

1800s. His depiction of Osprey in his celebrated 

American Ornithology was almost certainly 

painted here. I suspect Osprey were as 

common on the Bayshore in the 19th Century 

as they are now. If I had my way, Osprey 

would be Cape May’s emblematic bird and 

its carved likeness would greet visitors to the 

bird-watching hall of fame that will most certainly 

be built here one day. 

No place has a more enduring ornithological 

tradition than Cape May and no place sees 

more visitors drawn to marvel at a region’s 

Bird Droppings

here. Ornithologists William and Spencer 

Baird, of sparrow and sandpiper fame, were 

frequent visitors although their interest 

was not entirely ornithological. The brothers 

married the Holmes sisters of Cape May 

Court House whose home is the Cape May 

Museum today. Witmer Stone, author of Bird 

Studies at Old Cape May, traversed the whole 

Bayshore and was the first to summarize the 

great autumn hawk migration. However, field 

guide author Roger Tory Peterson beat Stone 

to the press, documenting the flights in The 

Auk, journal of the American Ornithologists’ 

Union (1936). Later, Cape May native Clay 

Sutton penned an updated tribute to Cape 

May’s birds in his Bird Studies at New Cape May. 

Field guide author David Allen Sibley wrote 

his now famous Sibley Guide to Birds at his 

home in Cape May Point. 

I say again, no place has a more enduring 

ornithological tradition than Cape May. From 

March until August, the strident piping call of 

Osprey will ring out over marshes and nearshore 

waters, a vocalization that is as much a 

part of the summer soundscape as the cry of 

Laughing Gulls and the squeal of youngsters 

splashing in the surf. 

The best place to see Osprey is probably 

the beach off Cape May Point State Park. It’s 

a favorite fishing spot for birds nesting in the 

South Cape May Meadows. The return of the 

Osprey is good news for our resident Bald 

Eagles who will soon have young to feed.

Admit it. If you did watch the Oscars 

last Sunday, it was to see if there was 

any slapping. Some would say everybody 

got a little something — or 

should I say Something Somewhere 

All in Good Time. But many walked away 

empty-handed. 

Everything Everywhere All at Once took home 

the night’s biggest awards — Best Picture, 

Best Actress, Best Director, both supporting 

actors — seven in all. It was a top-shelf statue 

coup. I’m a big fan of this film — and not just 

because it’s quirky. My reason is as multifaceted 

as the universes this story explores. 

First, it’s an independent film, insofar 

as what show business calls “independent.” 

Just a week before the Oscars, it won the 

Film Independent Spirit Award in a streaming-only 

ceremony hosted by my favorite 

Hasan Minhaj. The definition of “indie” in the 

case of Film Independent is a budget under 

$30m. My standards are a little different. To 

me, an indie film has a budget of two cases of 

soda, three bags of potato chips, and a ton of 

good energy. But that’s just me. 

Second, this now lavishly decorated film 

has at its center and moral core the importance 

of kindness. As quoted from the character 

played by now Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan, 

“Please. Be kind, especially when we don’t 

know what’s going on.” A lesson for all of us. 

Lastly, this film celebrates the racial diversity 

that can be Oscar. This fight still needs to 

be won. Don’t tell me it doesn’t. On the morn- 

ing of the Oscars, I had to kindly confront the 

racist at a local coffee shop who said of this 

film, “No more Asian movies! First Parasite 

[2019], which was terrible, and now this one.” 

True story. Please be kind indeed. 

All Quiet on the Western Front took home 

four esteemed awards. This expert retelling 

was brutal, a film that was as much anti-megalomaniac 

as it was anti-war. And how about 

Brendan Fraser? I always associate him with 

campy or silly films — but he proved himself. 

Let’s see if he does more mummy flicks now. 

Other Oscar winners include Avatar for 

visual effects, Women Talking for adapted 

screenplay, Top Gun for sound, and Black 

Panther Wakanda Forever for its lavish costumes 

from Ruth Carter. She also won in 2019 for the 

first Black Panther film. There were plenty 

of multi-nominated films that left empty-handed.

dialects, but lunch made it into the Oxford 

English Dictionary in 1829. 

“Brunch” first appeared in English in 

1895, in an article by Guy Beringer, who suggested 

replacing Sunday’s heavy, post-church 

meals with something lighter, to accommodate 

people who were hungover from Saturday 

night. Beringer advocated a leisurely light 

Ah, the luxury of brunch — the word 

itself is a reminder of how much 

fun the English language can be. 

It’s a portmanteau of “breakfast” 

and “lunch,” of course, but it also 

made me wonder where “lunch” came from. 

Breakfast is clear. The first meal of the day 

is named for when you break your fast — in 

other words, you stop not eating. 

“Lunch” has murkier beginnings. Maybe 

it began as a description of a quantity of 

food — it’s found in English as early as 1591, 

from the Spanish “lunja” for “loin” or hunk of 

meat. Or, perhaps it came from the German 

“non lunchentach,” which describes a midday 

ale. “Lunch” became “luncheon” at some 

point, perhaps in connection to “nuncheon,” 

an archaic word for “snack” that derived from 

“nonus” for noon and “shenken” for drink. By 

the 18th century, both “lunch” and “nuncheon” 

were defined by Samuel Johnson as quantities 

of food. Dr. Johnson’s dictionary defines 

“lunch” as “food as you can hold in your hand.” 

Jane Austen used nuncheon, spelled “noonmeal 

at which revelers could socialize and 

rehash the previous nights’ events, calling the 

meal “talk-compelling.” Brunch became popular 

in America in the 1930s, long before avocado 

toast began showing up on social media. 

Some credit its popularity to Catholics who 

liked to feast after fasting for Mass, others 

credit New Yorkers who stayed up all night, 

or Chicagoans, who served late breakfasts to 

travelers on cross-country train trips. 

You can enjoy brunch at several locations

May classic serving specialties like crab benedict 

and orange-and-almond French toast.

make-your-own mimosas and bloody marys.

made a move. I paid for it, but I was put out 

about it. She asked me if I wanted her number 

and I said yeah, but I will never call her back. 

Why does equality never come into play 

when it comes time to pay the bill? And I was 

perfectly prepared to pay for it, I just wanted 

the gesture. Am I wrong? —Feeling Used 

Dear Used 

The Answer Lady wants to be clear that 

there are many women who would indeed 

not presume upon your good nature. You just 

picked one who had a different sensibility. 

Two things. First, next time establish the 

rules before you get a table. Second, you could 

be right about your dinner companion taking 

advantage of her sex, but you seem to have 

come to judgment very quickly. The two of you 

simply had different expectations.

I often have my sister over for dinner. She 

lost her husband a few years ago and we enjoy 

her company. The problem is, she started 

dating a man about a month ago and invited 

him to dinner last week without mentioning it. 

He is quite nice, but started complaining about 

our very happy, friendly golden retriever. His 

allergies, his aversion to household pets — he 

treated “Sammy” like a rabid Cujo to the point 

that we had to confine him. When he left, he 

thanked us and said he “couldn’t wait for the 

next time.” We don’t want a next time. How do 

I handle this? — Dog Friendly and Proud of It

This is why reservations are such a 

blessing. Take the gang to Oyster Bay or 

Hemingway’s. Everyone will have a good time 

and poor “Sammy” can be left in peace. Have 

a chat with your sister. Perhaps she failed to 

warn the new beau about “Sammy.” When you 

want to have your sister over, tell her she must 

come alone or “orient” her beau that “Sammy” 

is a member of the family and should not be 

punished just because there is a new kid on 

the block. A compromise would be to wait for 

warmer weather and barbecue, allowing both 

the new beau and “Sammy” to roam free.

when her owner got sick and could no longer 

care for her. She is a little nervous when meeting 

new people, but quickly becomes friendly 

and social. Star loves to play fetch and thinks 

she is a lap dog despite her 94-pound stature. 

She is learning more behavior cues and will 

make a loving companion to any family.

cats. 

PETEY is an 11-year-old boy who came to the 

shelter when his owner passed away. He was 

found begging for food and a kind neighbor 

called animal control. He’s been a bit afraid, 

but after some calm words, Petey has warmed 

up. He’s neutered and up to date on all vaccinations. 

Petey would do well in a home with 

other cats . 

CASSANDRA is a beautiful 15-year-old girl 

who came to the shelter as a stray. She lost the 

tip of her ear from frostbite following winter. 

Cassandra is in good health otherwise and is 

a very affectionate girl. She doesn’t get along 

with other cats, but a home with children is 

OK. All this girl needs is a warm bed and some 

good food.
