Music festival delivers
• By Heidi Slade
THE PORT Noise festival
took over Lyttelton last
Saturday for a night of eclectic
Kiwi music.
Organiser and headline
performer Ben Woods said
seeing the hard work come
together felt surreal.
Sixteen acts performed
at Loons, Wunderbar and
Lyttelton Coffee Company.
The line-up included local
acts Ferby and Delaney
Davidson, as well as Womb
and Glass Vaults from
Wellington.
Festival goers were encouraged
to enjoy a bit of
everything music-wise – and
to hopefully find something
new.
“I think everyone at Port
Noise saw something that
they knew and loved, and
a couple things they didn’t
know that blew them away,”
said Woods.
This was the organisers’
mission from the beginning.
The festival, however,
couldn’t have come off
without the support and
enthusiasm of the Lyttelton
community.
Said Woods: “We literally
couldn’t have done it on our
own.”
RESIDENTS calling for noisedetecting
cameras to be installed
between Lyttelton and Governors
Bay are getting the run-around,
with Government agencies
seemingly duck-shoving the idea
from one agency to the next.
Cass Bay and Governors Bay
residents want the cameras in
place to catch noisy drivers regularly
racing their cars between
Lyttelton and Governors Bay.
Said city council
transport operations
manager
Stephen Wright:
“The installation
of these type of
cameras would
need to be initiated
by police.”
But Canterbury
road policing
manager Inspector Natasha
Stephen
Wright
Rodley said police are concerned
about noisy and speeding cars in
the bay area.
Davidson looks to Parliament
THE TE Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks
Peninsula Community Board needs a
new board member – and chair
– after Reuben Davidson’s latest
bid to get into Parliament.
Davidson was selected
at the weekend as Labour’s
candidate for Christchurch East
in October’s general election.
Sitting Christchurch East MP
politics.
Reuben
The move will trigger a by-election
for the community board. Davidson
is also its chair, meaning that
too will change after the byelection.
Davidson stood for Labour
in the traditional National
stronghold of Selwyn in the
2020 general election, polling
13,653 votes, 4943 behind
National’s Nicola Grigg who
took the seat.
THE SUNDAY Food Truck
Alley at the Mt Pleasant
Community Centre celebrated
one year in business at the
weekend.
It was about this time last
year nine traders first tried their
luck with the event, soon after
Covid-19 hit.
“Those were uncertain times,”
said event manager Derek Mc-
Cullough.
“But the traders were overwhelmed
by the response, with
most selling out that day.”
It has now become a popular
community event, he said.
“Right from the start people
brought their chairs and blankets
and made a picnic of it.”
The food truck alley expanded
to 16 traders this summer, went
all electric, and a programme of
local music was added, as well
as a craft brewer, said Mc-
Cullough.
It is now run weekly during
daylight savings time, with the
last alley of the season on
March 26.
“The feedback has been
extremely positive, with lots of
family get-togethers and groups
taking advantage of a Sunday
evening with no cooking and
dishes,” said McCullough.
Profits from the rent of the site
go back to the community.
“We’ve raised about $10,000
towards the operation of the
community centre, but the real
benefit, perhaps more than the
money, is the establishment of a
community event that provides
a ‘bump space’ for the locals,”
Residents frustrated
by boy racer activity
• From page 1
However, ownership of traffic
safety cameras rests with Waka
Kotahi, and that includes looking
at any emerging technology,
Rodley said.
Said a Waka Kotahi spokesperson:
“(These cameras) are not
a priority compared to the need
to save lives on state highways,
and (for local roads) you need to
talk to the council or community
board to see if it is something
they think would be worthwhile.”
There is at least one overseas
company offering noise detection
cameras, which are being used
in the United Kingdom and the
United States to help enforcement
authorities catch offenders.
Locals from Cass Bay to
Governors Bay continue to be
frustrated. Police seem powerless
to stop the racers, because by the
time they arrive the offenders
have often moved on.
Cass Bay resident Scott Adams
said efforts to get the cameras
have not progressed “but we are
doing work in preparation”.
Residents want the cameras
because they detect loud engine
noise, read registration plate
numbers and can send the
information directly to authorities.
They suggest the evidence
collected could be used to
Wright has confirmed
conventional crime cameras are
being installed at Naval Point.
There are discussions about
another camera at the Dyers
Pass Rd – Governors Bay Rd
intersection, but funding is yet to
be approved. It is expected to cost
$8000-10,000, Wright said.
Triathletes return to
CHAMPIONS: Andrew Abakhan from Sumner won the men’s
50-59 years triathlon title.
THE SEA2SKY Challenge
roared back to life at
Scarborough beach for the first
time in three years due to the
Covid-19 restrictions.
About 350 athletes, ranging
from children as young as five
to veterans like Sumner 71-yearold
Sharron Prutton, competed
in the triathlon, duathlon and
running events on Sunday.
Said event director John Newsom:
“Seeing crowds back on the
sidelines to cheer their friends
and family across the finish line
certainly gave the event a huge
lift this year.”
The blue ribbon triathlon/duathlon
saw athletes swim 750m,
or run 2.4km, cycle up Evans
Pass and Summit Rds then run
from Godley Head to Taylors
Mistake and over Scarborough
Hill.
Sumner athlete and event
sponsor Andrew Abakhan
from Physiosouth successfully
defended his men’s 50-59 years
triathlon title. Sue Lazar won the
women’s triathlon 60-69 years
and Malcolm Thornton took out
the men’s triathlon 60-69 years.
Said Abakhan: “I’d like
to think being a local, and
knowing the roads and trails inside-out,
gave me an advantage
but it was actually the swim that
was the difference between first
and second.” Redcliffs resident
Brad Richards from sponsor
Brad Richards Building completed
the 17km run challenge
after recently participating in
the Coast to Coast.
“I haven’t done much since the
Coast to Coast so today was a
bit of a struggle but this is such
a cool course. We are proud to
have our business supporting
such a great local event that has
options for all ages and abilities.
My daughter completed her first
big duathlon today which was
great to see.”
AI used to find pest plants
• By Heidi Slade
IDENTIFYING pest plants
using artificial intelligence is
now a step closer on Banks
Peninsula.
Environment Canterbury
biodiversity team leader Matt
Smith said the software is in
its early stages of development
but could be used in future to
identify nassella tussock and
other invasive plants spreading
across the peninsula.
Smith said the spread of the
tussock puts “the
whole peninsula
at risk and it’s
a very costly
pest for farmers
to have to deal
with.’’
The current
model used to
Matt Smith
identify the
tussock requires
high-resolution imagery, only
available by using a fixed wing
aircraft, which is cost prohibitive
in larger areas.
Smith hopes the AI
technology would change this in
time. Tracking pest populations
is a large part of ECan’s work.
“I imagine it [AI technology]
will be a huge part of how we
operate as an organisation in the
future,’’ Smith said.
“We really are just at the
PEST: Nassella tussock is an invasive grass that is
spreading across Banks Peninsula. PHOTO: ECAN
beginning of it.”
If the development of
the programme continues
successfully, landowners on
the peninsula will benefit,
Smith said. On large properties
contractors are hired to search
for pest plants like nassella
tussock, which can cost $30,000-
$40,000 a year, Smith said.
“The efficiency is created
with people knowing exactly
where they’re going. (AI) would
halve the amount of time and
money they’re spending on
contractors.’’
The team are looking to find
similar areas of high nassella
tussock density to take more
images.
“We’re just starting to dip our
toes in the water,’’ Smith said.
SERVICE: Lyttelton
fire chief Mark Buckley
presents Greg Bowater
with his gold star on
Saturday.
From pub fires
and school blazes
to the earthquakes
• By Heidi Slade
GREG BOWATER has fought
fires and attended other
emergencies stretching back
to the late 1970s. But nothing
compares with the aftermath
of the February 22, 2011,
earthquake when he spent three
solid weeks helping Lyttelton
recover.
On Saturday night, the
Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade
member was recognised for his
service with a gold star award for
25 years of accumulative service.
He was working on a building
site in Diamond Harbour when
the earthquake struck. Bowater
said the whole site shook.
“We arrived [in Lyttelton] to
find water everywhere, rocks and
retaining walls strewn all over
the road,’’ he said.
“That was us for the next three
weeks – working for the fire
brigade.’’
Bowater thinks it was 1979
when he signed up with the
Diamond Harbour volunteer
brigade.
“There was just a group of us,
boys really. We’d heard about
this fire brigade and the fun that
can be had. I’ve always been
grateful that I did that,” he said.
Bowater remains in close
contact with friends from the
Diamond Harbour brigade,
some of whom he went to school
with at Cashmere High. During
the 1990s, Bowater moved to
Lyttelton with his wife Andrea
and their four children. He then
joined the Lyttelton brigade.
During his career as a
volunteer firefighter, Bowater
said the brigade has been to
about 15,000 calls-outs.
One that sticks in his memory
was when the Diamond Harbour
brigade raced to the Wheatsheaf
hotel which burned down on
Teddington Rd. “I didn’t think
that a fire engine could go that
fast,” he said.
When the brigade arrived at
the scene, there were “flames
roaring out of every window.”
All of the occupants were
evacuated, but only the front
section of the hotel was left
standing. In the days following
the fire, the community held a
working bee at the site.
Bowater also recalled a fire at
the Port Levy school house.
“At the top of the hill looking
down, the bay was full of
smoke,” he said.
By the time the brigade
arrived, the building had already
burnt to the ground.
Bowater’s gold star award
ceremony was held at his “second
home” – the Naval Point Club.
Diamond Harbour born and
bred, Bowater is a familiar face
in the community.
He took over his father’s
building company, Bowater
Builders, which is now based in
Lyttelton.
The company won gold in
the Master Builders House of
the Year awards in 2018, as
well as craftsmen of the year
for Canterbury. Bowater is still
heavily involved in the Naval
Point Club and sees the harbour
as his “playground.”
“It’s just the community
involvement, putting a bit of
effort in for the locals. But it’s
also great fun.’’
Recipe for success: Chicken noddle soup
• By Jaime Cunningham
AMELIA SYKES has a few
techniques she likes to use to
win races. She takes a deep
breath at the starting gate, tries
not to overthink it – and makes
sure she eats her mum’s chicken
noodle soup.
And after her success at
the national track cycling
championships, there is no
doubting her technique.
Sykes, 18, claimed seven
elite titles across a range of
events at the championships
in Invercargill. It was the most
successful nationals to date for
the Sumner rider and her sixth
appearance at the event.
“It’s been my best year and
probably the highest level I’ve
ever raced in,” she said.
Sykes, who has previously
trained at Cycling New Zealand
high performance camps,
dominated the endurance
events, winning the 3000m
individual pursuit final (3m
37.5sec) and points race,
finishing with 41. She was also
the only rider to collect 20 bonus
points for lapping the field.
Sykes also took out the
combined team pursuit title,
scratch and elimination
honours, as well as the 500m
time trial (36.2sec) and team
sprint.
She describes herself as an
CHAMPION: Amelia Sykes believes her mum Marnie
been so successful lately. PHOTO: NATE TURNER
Tales Of A Vet Nurse
by Jade Pengelly
The highs and heartbreak of caring for the animals we love.
You never know who or what is going to walk, crawl or slither
through the doors of veterinary hospital...
Clumsy Luna the Greyhound and her fragile front legs; the
tortoise in need of a prosthetic leg; Jock the Saint Bernard and his
problematic eyelashes; Edward the Burmese cat and his extravagant
diet; the burly farmer and the world’s tiniest Chihuahua, Lulu-bell... there is never a
dull day in the life of a vet nurse. As the people who care for them around the clock,
vet nurses are uniquely placed to speak for their patients and help us understand
what our pets are going through.
From emergency shifts at a posh London practice to a busy country hospital treating
all manner of wildlife - snakes, foxes, hedgehogs - to working with equine-surgeons
and teaching the art of care to new generations of vet nurses in New Zealand, Tales
of a Vet Nurse is about a life devoted to saving our beloved and unconditional
friends. Along the way, Jade enlightens readers to the forbidden feasts of Labradors,
the dangers of x-raying prize-winning showjumpers, and the most common pets
she sees as clinic inpatients.
PARIS - The Memoir
by Paris Hilton
out of situations. I know how to
get out the gate.
“It’s just about using little
techniques.
“When I get to the start gate
I take a deep breath to centre
myself to where I am and what
I’m doing . . . I guess you could
say I engage the beast within
me,” she said.
The teenager has a few useful
methods off the track too. Sykes
believes a lot of her success
is due to her mum Marnie’s
chicken noodle soup, which she
first tasted when she started
racing.
“As I have grown up
and moved out, she makes it
when I’m not feeling 100 per
cent or to have when I get home
from racing late at night,” she
said.
After such a successful
nationals in the elite category,
Sykes hopes to be selected in
Cycling New Zealand’s high
performance squad in the
future.
“I’ve trained alongside them
in two camps and I’d love to get
the tap on the shoulder when
they’re ready,” she said.
“It’s a really cool thing for
me to get into, but if I doesn’t
happen soon it’s okay.”
Sykes will now turn her
focus to the Oceania track
championships in Brisbane
from March 24-28.
THIS BOOK
Behind Paris Hilton’s meteoric rise from Upper West Side club kid to household
name lies her self-proclaimed ‘superpower’ of ADHD and a hidden history that
traumatized and defined her. Shocking, funny and surprisingly profound, Paris is
the deeply personal memoir of the ultimate It Girl and a stunning inside view of a
pop culture phenomenon. Paris Hilton was simply the billionaire heiress America
had watched grow up on television, on the internet, and in tabloids. But there
was always more to Paris Hilton than met the eye. In this revealing and thoughtprovoking
book, Paris will separate the creation from the creator, the brand from the
ambassador, and show the woman who grew up with incredible privilege, but who
was also trapped in a world of unreasonable expectation at a moment when young
women were humiliated for sport in a gossip economy on steroids. Paris recounts
her perilous journey through pre-#METOO sexual politics with grace, generosity,
and plenty of fun, rising above a series of heart-wrenching challenges to find
healing, lasting love and a life of meaning and purpose. The parallel story arcs in
Paris’ braided narrative come to full bloom as a watershed portrait of the Noughties,
challenging each of us to question our role in her story and her role in ours. The
result is an intimate and unexpected memoir about persona and personification,
the price of being young and disobedient, and the complexity of manifesting your
dreams after watching part of yourself disappear.
national champs
ON TOP: Sumner’s Carl Tresfield won gold in the under-15
beach flags event.
• By Jaime Cunningham
SUMNER AND Taylors Mistake
have won gold medals at the first
surf life saving nationals held
since 2020.
Carl Tresfield was the standout
for the Sumner, winning the
under-15 beach flags and taking
bronze in the beach sprint at
New Brighton.
Keira Hall won the under-19
2km beach run for Sumner.
Louis Clark (Taylors) won the
men’s open run swim run event,
beating 66 other athletes to the
title.
Taylor Chamberlain combined
with Conor Dempster and Flynn
Hamilton to win Taylors Mistake
the men’s open board relay.
Taylors Mistake finished ninth
on 36 points in the final club
standings, while Sumner finished
24th out of 45 clubs on nine
points.
The relay and team events were
Taylors Mistake’s strength in
the four-day competition, with
several teams finishing in the top
three.
Chamberlain and Thomas
MacGibbon finished second in
the men’s open double ski event,
while the men’s open taplin
team consisting of Clark, Chamberlain,
Taylors Mistake’s Lucy Stroud
and Kate Regan finished third
out of 31 teams in the open double
ski event, and combined with
Agatha Weston for second in the
open board relay.
Taylors Mistake club president
Viv Bickley said the team’s
achievements were “amazing” in
the challenging surf.
“[They] all did amazingly well
and I have huge admiration for
the skill and strength [they] all
showed out there in that huge
surf. Well done to the lifeguards
and coaches who have worked so
hard over the last three years to
get here,” she said.
Sumner had medallists in the
2km run events. Ben Isles finishing
third in the men’s under-19
and Freya Atkins gained bronze
in the women’s under-15 race.
North Island clubs dominated
the final points standings in the
competition. Mt Maunganui won
the Alan Gardner Trophy for
best club in New Zealand with
127 points, while New Plymouth’s
East End finished second
on 79 points ahead of Gisborne’s
Midway on 71.
Taylors Mistake won the top
club title in the national masters
competition last Thursday, before
the senior programme took
place.
The club finished with 127
points ahead of North Beach (78)
and Waimairi (67).
draft Annual
Canterbury
Plan
declared a climate-change emergency
JENNY HUGHEY explains what
the council has been doing.
The formal declaration of a
state of climate emergency across
Canterbury was one of the most
serious, and colourful, moments
in the regional council’s more than
30-year history.
A year ago this Saturday,
at 11.49am, Environment
Canterbury became New Zealand’s
first council to proclaim such an
emergency, formally dedicating
itself to consideration of climate
change at the heart of all it does.
The declaration highlighted
that all the work Environment
Canterbury does – from
freshwater management to
biodiversity and biosecurity,
transport and urban development
to air quality, and also regional
leadership – has a climate change
focus.
Currently, under the Resource
Management Act, regional
councils are required only to adapt
to climate change, not mitigate
it – that responsibility is the
Government’s, but could change.
Even in ‘adapt mode’ many
of Environment Canterbury’s
existing policies and plans already
contribute to reduced emissions.
In declaring the climate
emergency, the Council noted it
would continue to show leadership
on climate-change and do so
MADE IT: I Am Hope founder Mike
King with Jack Lynskey-Reid after
his epic 138km fundraiser.
without adding new programmes
at ratepayers’ expense. It also gave
staff a clear mandate to continue
A SERIOUS case of sore feet might have
been the outcome, but for builder Jack
Lynskey-Reid the results of his recent
fundraising run “definitely made it
worthwhile”.
Starting at 7am on Friday, March 10,
Lynskey-Reid covered 23 laps of Hagley
Park, a distance of 138kms, finishing at
7am on Saturday, March 11. His efforts
raised more than $20,000 for the youth
and community-focused support group I
Am Hope.
The amount was double his original
target.
Lynskey-Reid ran the first 14 laps, at
which stage his feet had become very sore,
so he biked for a further five laps, a distance
of 30kms, then walked the last four
laps after changing into looser shoes.
“I ran two marathons in 12 hours, and
by the last two laps I had to push through
the pain,” he said.
Support from family, friends and workmates
boosted his efforts.
“A busload of New Zealand Army boys
arrived at the beginning and did a few
laps with me.
“A lot of people did laps with me, and
they’d never run so far in their life. Fifty
people ran the last lap and my parents
and some mates were there through the
whole night supporting me.”
Lynskey-Reid says he felt mentally fine
throughout, and physically fine apart
from the sore feet.
An after-function was held on the Saturday
night at the Boys’ High Old Boys
Rugby Club, where Mike King spoke and
presented Jack with a gift. Mike founded
The Key to Life Charitable Trust in 2010,
which runs the I Am Hope support
group.
Following the fundraiser, Lynskey-Reid
was taking some time off work to allow
his feet to recover.
“The boss told me to come back when
I’m ready,” he said.
by sea-level rise this century and
our productive and protected land
jeopardised by the arrival and
spread of new, exotic weeds and
pests from warmer climates.
All these eventualities have
to be planned and prepared for,
and Environment Canterbury
will remain in the vanguard of
these climate change efforts.
One example is the $40 million
Waimakariri River flood
protection project, completed
late last year. The network of
floodgates and stopbanks will
protect half a million people and
$8 billion of community and
business assets from a possible
“super flood”.
The last major flood was in
December 1957, when parts
of Coutts Island in Belfast and
Kainga were swamped by river
flow peaking at 3990 cubic
15
threatened and facing increased
pressures due to river system
change.
Wetlands are also ecosystems
at-risk nationally and regionally,
degraded by draining, damming
and diversion affecting their
ability to sequester carbon,
cleanse freshwater and mitigate
flooding, as well as impacting on
biodiversity and mahinga kai.
With biosecurity, we are
putting greater emphasis on the
risks of new pests establishing
in Canterbury. Warming
temperatures, changing soils and
new land uses mean new weeds
especially, will be able to gain a
better foothold across the region.
More broadly, we have to
Auction: 11.00am, 23 March 2023 (Unless Sold Prior)
3 Bed | 2 Living | 2 Off Street Parks | 1 Bathroom
Have you been waiting for the
summertime rush of listings on the flat
in Sumner, but noticed it hasn’t come this
year? Well here’s one for you, welcome to
67 Wakefield Avenue.
A sunny, open plan living, dining and
kitchen area forms the heart of the home.
The decor is light and neutral while the
original rimu floorboards provide texture
and warmth and effortlessly connects the
main living space to the private, secure
and family friendly rear yard.
Featuring three bedrooms, updated
bathroom with separate loo, newly
installed HRV and log burner, along with
the convenience of a heat pump, this
house provides year round comfort and is
future proofed for generations to come.
Lovingly maintained and immaculately
presented both inside and out, this
home has been a labour of love for our
vendors, but with a move up the hills on
the horizon (quite literally), they offer up
their humble abode to the market.
Family homes like this are seldom
available in the village, and being so
close to the local shops, bars, cafes and of
course the beach, your earliest inspection
is advised.
TREASURES FROM THE PAST 19
The Hurunui opens Lyttelton’s dry dock
THE HURUNUI was the first
ship to enter the new graving or
dry dock in Ōhinehou
Lyttelton at its opening on
January 3, 1883. She literally
broke the ribbon as she entered
the dock, witnessed by a crowd
enthusiastic about Lyttelton’s port
development.
The dock opening was a grand
affair, including an extravagant
banquet hosted by the Harbour
Board to mark the important occasion.
Coastal and trans-Tasman
vessels made most use of the dock
in the early years, while many
foreign vessels continued to undergo
maintenance in their home
ports. The facility’s popularity
increased such that, although
now much changed, it remains
an essential element of port infrastructure
and is in constant use.
The Hurunui itself was built
in 1875 for the New Zealand
Shipping Co and was an iron
sailing ship weighing 1054
tonnes. She was changed from
being full-rigged to barque-rigged
in 1890 and was sold to Russian
owners in 1896, thenceforth being
named Hermes. WW1 sealed her
fate as she was sunk by a German
submarine in 1915.
An update on museum plans
Proposed new museum design by Warren and Mahoney.
AT THE TIME of writing we
are eagerly anticipating news of
the outcome of our application
for resource consent for the
proposed new museum. We
would be very happy, along
with our partners Te Hapū o
Ngāti Wheke, to be the first new
building in the block between
Oxford and Canterbury Sts
since the February 22, 2011
earthquake devastated Lyttelton’s
town centre.
In 1969, led by the
inspirational Baden Norris,
a dedicated team of local
volunteers opened the first
Lyttelton Museum in the
former Shipping Company
Headquarters on Hawkhurst
Rd. In 1980 came a move to the
old Merchant Navy Centre on
Gladstone Quay, which was the
museum’s home for 30 years. The
collection grew to include more
than 20,000 objects, photographs
and resources donated by the
people of Lyttelton, the wider
harbour community, and
beyond.
Sadly, the earthquakes caused
significant damage to the
premises, forcing the museum’s
closure and necessitating
demolition. However the
Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade
and Air Force Museum of New
Zealand staff were able to rescue
the precious artefacts, which are
now in safe storage at the Air
Force Museum at Wigram.
In 2016, Lyttelton Historical
Museum Society members voted
to proceed with plans for a new
museum. Following the vision
of Baden Norris and respected
previous president Dr Kerry
McCarthy, the proposed new
museum will weave together
stories unique to this special
region. It will be a place to
share, celebrate and preserve the
taonga and stories of Ōhinehou
Lyttelton and Whakaraupō
Lyttelton Harbour under six
key themes: mana whenua,
colonial Canterbury, Lyttelton
local, maritime, Antarctic, and
Whakaraupō by nature.
Conversations with Te Hapū
o Ngāti Wheke and local artist
Nathan Pohio have informed the
design of the proposed building.
We want the new museum to
support appropriate tikanga so it
can be a place entrusted to hold
and share stories and taonga of
mana whenua for the benefit of
the whole community and its
visitors.
Once built, Te Ūaka The
Lyttelton Museum will host
a range of long-term and
changing exhibitions. There will
be a dedicated research space
providing access to the collection
and curatorial expertise, public
talks, workshops, and education
programmes that align with
school curricula. Intended as a
shared facility, it will be a site of
collaboration with like-minded
community groups, artists,
researchers and education
providers.
NEW ZEALAND SAIL GRAND PRIX
CHRISTCHURCH
SAILGP’S
LONG-AWAITED
NEW ZEALAND
DEBUT

26 Bay Harbour News Wednesday March 15 2023
seeing is BELIEVING
High-speed, high-tech and high emotion – SailGP is
live action racing like you’ve never seen before.
Thousands of fans are set to experience the inaugural ITM
New Zealand Sail Grand Prix this weekend in Ōtautahi,
Christchurch. Hometown hero the New Zealand SailGP
Team heads into its home debut in second position on the
Season 3 Leaderboard, with France hot on their tail and
fierce rivals Australia in top spot. With the top four teams
neck and neck, it will be all to play for as the fleet pushes
its limits on Whakaraupō, Lyttelton Harbour - the final
stop before the Season 3 Grand Final in San Francisco on
May 6-7.
Naval Point will soon be transformed into the ITM New
Zealand Sail Grand Prix Race Village. Here, ticket holders
will experience a wide selection of food and beverages, live
music, expert commentary, sponsor activations and much
more. Racing is set to take place from 3PM - 4:30PM on
Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 March with gates opening from
midday. Patrons are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy live
activations and the vibrant, festive atmosphere on-site.
nATiOn
Nine national teams are contesting the third season of
SailGP, and as the boats are identical and constantly
upgraded with the same set-up, it is the skill of the worldclass
athletes on board and the decisions they make that
decide races, not the technology.
The boats are powered by gigantic, vertical wing sails
that can be configured in three different heights, with
the common setting the 24-metre wingsail. The biggest
wing size helps produce extra power in light airs, while a
smaller configuration allows for flat-out racing in stronger
winds, ensuring racing can take place across a much wider
spectrum of wind conditions.
In lighter winds, weight also becomes a telling factor and,
in these conditions, the teams race with two fewer athletes
on board in an attempt to gain an advantage, creating a
true test of the athletes’ skills.
The addition of two new teams this season - Canada and
Switzerland - has raised the stakes further, making for
a busier race-course, which has seen even the slightest
mistake punished!
Back-to-back champion, the Australian SailGP team,
remains the only crew to have lifted the coveted SailGP
trophy, taking it home in both Season 1 and 2. But the New
Zealand SailGP team has been showing strong recent
results, and cracking the F50 code.
Season 3 of SailGP includes many of the sport’s top
athletes including New Zealand’s Peter Burling, as well as
two-time SailGP champion Tom Slingsby (AUS). Other
legends of the sport include Sir Ben Ainslie (GBR) and
Jimmy Spithill (USA).
The ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix| Christchurch is
the second-to-last event on the race calendar, so you can
expect thrilling competition on Whakaraupō, Lyttelton
Harbour as the teams battle it at the final stop before the
grand final in San Francisco.
28 Bay Harbour News Wednesday March 15 2023
INSPIRING THE
NEXT GENERATION
Launched in the league’s inaugural season in 2019,
Inspire is SailGP’s community, education and outreach
initiative, powered by our belief that sailing can be a
force for good, Powered by Nature, Driven by Purpose.
SailGP Inspire aims to serve a leading role in helping to
diversify the sport of sailing for youth without race, gender,
and socioeconomic status presenting a barrier to entry.
SailGP Inspire works with each of its host venues and
partners to offer programs that create impact within the
local community and most importantly leave a legacy,
and has engaged more than 10,000 young people to date
across the programme’s three pillars: learning, racing and
careers.
The action-packed SailGP Inspire programme will reach
into the local community, schools and boating clubs to
engage more than 200 people in the lead up to and during
the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix. More than 30 interns
will be matched with SailGP teams and in other roles across
the organisation for a week-long immersion in various fields
- from boatbuilding and hydraulics to broadcast media and
hospitality.
Through the Inspire Learning program, nearly 200 yeareight
students from various Christchurch schools will be
provided with a hands-on learning experience in a series
of science, technology, engineering and mathematics
(STEM)-based learning activities and challenges, centred
around the sport of sailing.
Canterbury Yacht Clubs will also be in on the action, with
nine local clubs paired with a respective national team in
a weeklong partnership that will include a technical tour
of the SailGP event village and a visit with their adopted
team. And finally, youth sailors and wing foilers will get to
go behind the scenes, meet the world’s best athletes, with
some (WASZP sailors) taking part in a racing programme
on the F50 racecourse, directly in front of sold-out crowds
at Naval Point.
LEAVING A
LEGACY
In every city it visits, SailGP teams up with a local
community purpose project as part of the league’s Host
City Climate Action Charter. Projects focus on areas
including clean energy impact, and wider environmental
issues, including wetland and ocean restoration.
In Christchurch, the chosen project is the Ōmaru Stream
Restoration Project. Led by Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke
Rāpaki, the project aims to restore the forests surrounding
Whakaraupō by restoring vegetation, reducing pests, and
enabling biodiversity to flourish and reduce sediment
running into the harbour.
