South Brighton gets a 

big pass mark

SOUTH Brighton dominated 

the relay events at the surf life 

saving nationals to finish as the 

top club from the South Island. 

Both of South Brighton’s 

open beach relay teams won 

gold medals in their events. 

The women’s team of Rosie 

Falcous, Ashleigh Archer, Anna 

Manning and Annie O’Neill 

finished third in their heat but 

came out on top on the final. 

Morgan Foster, Luca Mackenzie, 

Mathieu Reid and George Reid 

won the men’s open beach relay. 

South Brighton also won gold 

in the under-19 ski relay event, 

with Tom Thyne, Dylan Monk, 

Liam Rogers and Antonio 

Rodrigues. Hugo Tresfield, Tyler 

Lodge and Cooper Shanks won 

the under-17 ski relay. 

Waimairi won the men’s and 

women’s open surf canoe short 

course events and both the 

long course events in the open

Brass band calls out for cornet players

EVERY WEEK around 35 

members of ‘50s Up Brass’ meet 

at the New Brighton band-rooms 

to practice their repertoire and to 

socialise. 

And while there’s nothing 

too flashy about their music, it’s 

popular with the locals. But the 

band needs cornet players. 

Life member Bob Kayes said 

the style of music they play was 

mainly “middle of the road, 

nothing too classical”. 

The brass band was formed 

in 1993, and is preparing to 

celebrate its 30th anniversary in 

October. 

“We are short of cornet 

players” said Kayes. 

“We’ve got good numbers 

in all the other sections but 

unfortunately . . . I won’t say 

worldwide but New Zealandwide 

there’s a shortage of cornet 

players.” 

He said cornets are the lead 

instrument of any brass band 

and are integral to their musical 

timing. 

The 86-year-old tuba player 

said there’s no strict requirement 

to be aged over 50 to join in, 

but he reckons it does help. 

50s Up Brass regularly play 

mini concerts at public events, 

Working Men’s Clubs and 

retirement homes. 

Kayes said they always have 

new players coming through, 

especially retirees wanting 

something to do with the extra 

time on their hands. That gives 

him a positive feeling about the 

future of the band – provided 

they can find some of those 

cornet players.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand 

southern sport manager Luke 

Smith said the conditions were 

incredible for the event, with 

plenty of surf. 

“New Brighton turned on the 

weather for all four days of competition, 

which made for some 

extremely exciting racing,” Smith 

said. 

“It was such an awesome sight 

seeing around 1200 volunteer 

lifeguards from around New 

Zealand have the opportunity 

to compete on the national stage 

after the past two years of this 

event had been cancelled.” 

The North Island dominated 

the final points standing. Mt 

Maunganui won the Alan 

Gardner Trophy for best club 

with 127 points, while New 

Plymouth’s East End were second 

(79 points) ahead of Gisborne’s 

Midway (71).

the chaos of the protest that stopped the nation, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told a press 

conference, ‘One day, it will be our job to try and understand how a group of people could

Mis- and disinformation had been identified as a problem before the convoy to parliament 

had even been suggested. While that protest looked like something that ‘couldn’t happen

Adopting a dog from the pound

Mr SandyMount the PenGuIn’S 

bIG day In the CIty 

Earlier this month Dr Steve operated on a very 

special Yellow Eyed Penguin (hoiho). This penguin 

has a name - Mr Sandymount. Mr Sandymount 

was blind in his left eye because of a cataract that 

was likely caused by trauma. He travelled up with 

his team from the Wildlife Hospital in Dunedin. 

There is a requirement that to be released back 

into the wild, Yellow Eyed penguins have to 

be able to see from both eyes. Without this 

“binocular vision” they are less likely to be able to 

hunt and feed themselves on 

fast moving little fish. 

Dr Steve had never removed 

a cataract from a Penguin 

before, so a bit of research 

was required. The eye is much 

smaller than a cat or dogs, 

making the surgery more 

difficult and the potential for 

complications higher. 

The pre-op considerations 

are similar to companion 

animals but the anaesthetic 

is risker due to the fact we 

are operating on a bird! 

Fortunately the wildlife team 

are very experienced in this sphere 

and took care of Mr Sandymount and 

all his anaesthesia requirements. 

Although very intricate the surgery 

went very well. Steve found the 

cataract to be “softer” than dogs. The 

surgical time was therefore short - 

which is good. 

In a series of penguin cataracts 

surgeries overseas a number of eyes 

got scarring on the back lens capsule. 

Because of this a circular hole was 

made in the posterior lens capsule at 

the end off the phacoemulsification 

cataract surgery. Steve was anxious 

about this before the surgery as it is not 

routinely done with dogs - but it went 

smoothly. 

Four weeks after surgery he is going great. 

His eye looks very good. He is still getting 

2 anti-inflammatory drops a day in his 

left eye and an oral anti-inflammatory 

medication. Apart from this he is 

swimming in his pool all day. 

All in all a great result - so far! 

Some FACTS on Yellow Eyed 

Penguins 

1. One of the rarest Penguins in the 

world, found only in NZL 

2. Maori name, HOIHO, meaning 

noise and shouter, because of its 

Shrill call 

3. In 1990/91, their were 150 Pairs 

left in the South Island. In 1996/97 

their were 600 pairs due to the 

reduction of predators by conservation groups. In 2018/19, there were only 225 

pairs located. 

4. They have become casualties of human activities - hunted for food, fires 

destroyed their habitats, and people arrived with predators. 

5. Hoiho are considered to be ocean sentinels, helping us understand the effects of 

pollution, over fishing and climate change.

HELEN AND Nik came into the city 

council animal shelter in August last year 

looking to adopt. One month later, they 

welcomed two dogs to their forever home. 

The two met a lovely brindle coloured 

boy and decided he would be perfect for 

them. They named him Tig. 

“Tig is a whippet cross – definitely got 

some staffy or bull terrier in the mix,” said 

owner Helen. 

City council animal services manager 

Lionel Bridger said at the time Helen and 

Nikki adopted, the pair said they wanted 

to adopt two dogs. 

“We suggested they go home with Tig, 

settle him in, then decide if they still 

wanted a second dog. So, late September 

they came back to the shelter with Tig for 

a visit,” said Bridger. 

“They said did we have any female dogs 

for adoption. We did. They met our wee 

huntaway cross female, who was a bit shy 

at first, but when she met Tig, it was all 

on. They named her Bella.” 

Helen said the reason they wanted two 

dogs was because they’d had two dogs 

before and they were great company for 

each other. 

Helen said the two new best friends 

seem to be loving life. 

“Over the summer we’ve spent time 

with Tig to encourage him to swim –

Bella was a natural. Now they both swim 

with us, and will even jump in off the 

rocks when deep enough. 

“We’ve also been on some good walks 

all around the Port Hills – from the 

Lyttelton gun emplacement to above 

Governors Bay, and all around the rivers 

and city red zone. We can all easily enjoy 

a 20-30km jaunt, but need to carry plenty 

of water for all.” 

Thanks to Helen and Nik, Tig and Bella 

have found their forever home.

Recipe for success: Chicken noodle soup

AMELIA SYKES has a few 

techniques she likes to use to 

win races. She takes a deep 

breath at the starting gate, tries 

not to overthink it – and makes 

sure she eats her mum’s chicken 

noodle soup. 

And after her success at 

the national track cycling 

championships, there is no 

doubting her technique. 

Sykes, 18, claimed seven 

elite titles across a range of 

events at the championships 

in Invercargill. It was the most 

successful nationals to date 

for the former Avonside Girls’ 

High School rider, and her sixth 

appearance at the event. 

“It’s been my best year and 

probably the highest level I’ve 

ever raced in,” she said. 

Sykes, who has previously 

trained at Cycling New Zealand 

high performance camps, 

dominated the endurance 

events, winning the 3000m 

individual pursuit final (3m 

37.5sec) and points race, 

finishing with 41. She was also 

the only rider to collect 20 bonus 

points for lapping the field. 

Sykes also took out the 

combined team pursuit title, 

scratch and elimination 

honours, as well as the 500m 

time trial (36.2sec) and team 

sprint. 

She describes herself as an 

overthinker, but having a 

regular race routine helps to 

slow her mind down during 

high pressure moments on the 

track. “Inside my mind, I know 

what to do. I know how to get 

out of situations. I know how to 

get out the gate. 

“It’s just about using little 

techniques. 

“When I get to the start gate 

I take a deep breath to centre 

myself to where I am and what

I’m doing . . . I guess you could 

say I engage the beast within 

me,” she said. 

The teenager has a few useful 

methods off the track too. Sykes 

believes a lot of her success 

is due to her mum Marnie’s 

chicken noodle soup, which she 

first tasted when she started 

racing. 

“As I have grown up 

and moved out, she makes it 

when I’m not feeling 100 per 

cent or to have when I get home 

from racing late at night,” she 

said. 

After such a successful 

nationals in the elite category, 

Sykes hopes to be selected in 

Cycling New Zealand’s high 

performance squad in the 

future. 

“I’ve trained alongside them 

in two camps and I’d love to get 

the tap on the shoulder when 

they’re ready,” she said. 

“It’s a really cool thing for 

me to get into, but if I doesn’t 

happen soon it’s okay.” 

Sykes will now turn her 

focus to the Oceania track 

championships in Brisbane 

from March 24-28.

The subsidy is part of the Warmer Kiwi 

Homes initiative and is available to Home 

owner/occupiers with a Community Services 

Card, a SuperGold combo card or who live in 

a low-income area as determined by deciles 

8-10 on the New Zealand Deprivation Index. 

The applicant’s home must also have been 

built before 2008, have insulation up to code 

(insulation subsidies also available) and have 

no fixed heating in a living area, such as an 

existing operational heat pump or fireplace. 

With new regulations now in place for 

Landlords to provide heating in rentals, it’s 

time to ensure you are meeting the new 

standards. 

Inadequate heating and ventilation can 

lead to mould growth and dampness in your 

property, leading to costlier maintenance 

and an unhealthy living environment. 

Providing a fixed heater with a higher heat 

output and lower running costs, like a heat 

pump, will enable your tenants to heat the 

area effectively. Enviro Master are well 

experienced with the Tenancy Services 

software to ensure that you are meeting your 

requirements.
