The Mulberry Bush Therapeutically Informed Courses 5
Since its inception, in 1948, The Mulberry Bush has offered outstanding
levels of training and learning opportunities to not only those across
our charity, but those working nationally and internationally supporting
children, young people and families whose lives have been impacted by
early life trauma.
We offer a variety of continuing professional development opportunities,
all built upon our core principles of developing a Psychodynamic
Understanding (for example seeing Behaviour as a Communication of
need); Collaborative Working and Reflective Practice. We offer a mix
of face to face and online learning opportunities as well as a mixture of
half-day introductory courses through to two-year degree programs.
Each course has been carefully developed to help attendees link theory
to practice in a way which develops the support for those with whom we
work. Courses are appropriate for those working across all professional
sectors where staff support those impacted by trauma.
Our courses have been awarded a number of National accolades,
including three National Training Awards and a Princess Royal Award
for Training in 2021. But don’t just take our word for it, have a look

Validated by
Having taught for a few years before participating
on the FdA course I was intrigued to see how my
day-to-day classroom practices could be modified
by the learning I was going to be taking part in.
Having now come to the end of the FdA I can now
say that I am far more confident with working
with traumatised children and have a deeper
understanding of the possible reasons as to why
they behave in the ways they do.

Introduction: This course is
run by The Mulberry Bush and
validated by the University of the
West of England, this course
has been specially designed
for practitioners in the childcare
sector. The course is suitable
for those working in education,
both mainstream and special,
residential care, or health settings
working with children or young
people who have experienced
trauma or mental health difficulties.
The course is also suitable
for foster carers.
Through your modules and
assessment you will graduate in a
confident position to develop your
professional career.
You will be equipped to work at
a managerial level in childcare
and education settings or to
continue studying and specialise
in therapeutic aspects of childcare.
The course is regarded as
equivalent to the mandatory
Level 3 Diploma and the content
has been mapped against these
requirements, and the Therapeutic
Service Standards set out by the
Community of Communities.
A progression year to BA (Hons)
level is available through the
University of the West of England.

Receiving this award is not just about validation
of the teaching team, but more so of the staff who
undertook this demanding training programme,
whilst still working, and the impact on practice
the learning has had. Hearing from our students
how their practice with children and families has
developed and how this leads to improved outcomes
for the children is really what the course is all about.

We’re proud to be one of

Mulberry Bush and validated

West of England.
Members of The Mulberry
Bush’s Outreach team were
presented with the award
by HRH Princess Anne at a
ceremony held at Mansion
House in London.

Length: 1 year
Introduction: This course has
been designed to meet the
diverse needs of those working
alongside children who have
experienced early life trauma in
a range of settings. This is an
accredited course by APPCIOS &
Crossfields Institute.
This qualification was developed
in response to the training needs
of residential care staff to enable
them to meet the complex needs
of children and young people in
their care, and is mapped against
our Level 3 Foundation Degree in
Therapeutic Work with Children
and Young People.
The aim of this programme
is to support you to develop
as a worker through creating
an experience of learning and
development which can easily be
transferred into your work with
children and young people. It will
also provide an understanding
of the impact of early life trauma
and working with children
who may have experienced
attachment difficulties.
This training has been an absolute game changer for
my practice, and I have noticed a big difference in
children being able to accept care and help.

Level 3 Certificate in
Therapeutic Group Work with
Children and Young People

Length: 6 months
Introduction: This experiential
qualification enables practitioners
to develop the skills, knowledge
and understanding to make
effective use of a therapeutic group
to support change for children and
young people effectively.
This qualification is suitable for
those staff using group work with
children or young people in either
school or care settings. These
groups may be for all ages and
abilities such as: circle times,
youth clubs, nurture groups or
after-school clubs.
The course has provided me with a greater
understanding of groups, group dynamics and group
roles. This will support my practice alongside both the
children and adults. It is and has been invaluable in
my knowledge and progression as a practitioner.

Working with Trauma

Introduction: This qualification
is designed for those who work
across the childcare sector,
whether in education or health
and social care, to help them work
effectively and empathetically with
children and young people who
have experienced trauma. You
will be introduced to theoretical
frameworks which underpin
our understanding of working
with trauma and their physical
and psychological impact on
individuals, as well as introducing
strategies to support individuals
who have experienced trauma.
It will equip you with the basic
knowledge, understanding and
skills to work effectively and
empathetically with children
and young people.

Practice Training
Location: Hybrid;

Length: In person; Full day’s
Training. Online; 3, 2 hour
sessions over a period of 6 weeks
Introduction: This training is
designed for anyone working
with children, young people
and/or their parents or carers.
The training aims to provide an
understanding of attachment,
how this impacts on a child or
young person’s behaviour and
how to support children and their
individual needs.
All of us, from the cradle to the grave, are happiest
when life is organised as a series of excursions,
long or short, from the secure base provided
by our attachment figures.

Communication

Introduction: This training is
designed for anyone working
with children, young people
and/or their parents or carers.
The training aims to provide an
understanding of what a child or
young person’s behaviour may
be communicating and ways
to reduce this anxiety, prevent
and de-escalate behaviours
which challenge us.
Attempting to understand helps, and can affect
children’s behaviour: someone is listening.

Introduction to the
Neuroscience of Trauma

Length: 1, 2 hour session
Introduction: Have you ever
wondered why some children
appear to react to the smallest
of triggers? Do you work with
children whose behaviour can
go from nought to sixty in the
blink of an eye? This training is
designed for anyone who works
with children and young people
to provide an introduction on
how trauma in early childhood
can affect the development of
their growing brains. The aim of
this two hour session is to gain
insight into and think about the
neuroscience of trauma and toxic
stress and the consequences
for children’s social, emotional
and executive functioning and
behaviour regulation.

Reflective
Supervision
Training
Location: In person (MB3)
Length: 2 days
Introduction: This course is
designed to support staff as
they develop their knowledge
and skills as a supervisor. It
introduces the purpose and
benefits of developing an effective,
psychodynamically informed
supervision structure and explores
how this can support a culture of
organisational well-being.
We have supported staff teams
for over 70 years by offering
thoughtful and high-quality
supervision structures. We’ve
drawn on this experience when
designing this course to enable
you to develop a reflective culture
that focuses on the professional
supervision of staff members.

Team Teach;
Behaviour as a
Communication of Need
Find out

Location: In person (MB3)
Length: 1 day
Introduction: Team Teach is a
framework, used widely in children
and adult settings, for working
with behaviours that challenge
with a focus on reducing ‘anxiety,
risk and restraint’.
This 1 day course introduces
the idea of ‘behaviour as a
communication of need’ and
will look at positive behaviour
management strategies and basic
positive handling strategies to
keep people safe. This course
is for professionals working with
children who exhibit challenging
behaviour. The course can
be delivered over one day
or two half-days.

Training in Emotion Coaching
Location: Online or in person
or a hybrid model
Length: 3 half day sessions
Introduction: Emotion Coaching
is an evidence based approach
to help children to understand
and manage their emotions.
Emotion Coaching enables
adults to co-regulate children’s
emotions, de-escalate situations
where behaviour is challenging
and develop children’s ability to
self-regulate their own emotions
and behaviour. It can be used by
anybody to respond to children’s
emotions as they happen.
What I have learnt I will use not only in my
practice, but in my home life too. I thoroughly
enjoyed the discussions sparked by the training
among professionals from various backgrounds
and experiences...

Living, Learning Experience (LLE)
Location: In person (MB3)
Length: 2 days
Introduction: The LLE is a
two day intensive, experiential,
residential experience. During this
experience participants explore
working closely with others and
learn how to use relationships
effectively in clinical practice.
Join us at our stunning MB3 site
in Toddington, Gloucestershire
as you learn about the power
of group process in a safe
and enjoyable way.
This is one experience that will stay with me forever
and in a positive way! I learnt a lot about myself
because I was provided with a safe place and though
I am a very ‘closed-up’ person there was some ‘magic’
like experience that enabled me to open up.

an Emotionally
Aware Environment

suitable for current and aspiring
leaders from education and care
settings, who work with children
and young people experiencing

leadership and management
abilities in this important

interesting, and has helped me to think differently
about solutions to issues.

School Improvement
Partner (SIP) Training
Find out

Length: 6 days
Introduction: The Mulberry
Bush training programme,
endorsed with a Crossfields
Institute Quality Mark, will provide
experienced, effective special
and alternative provider (AP)
school leaders with the skills and
knowledge to become a School
Improvement Partner (SIP).
This will be of benefit to leaders’
own school/organisation, as
well as helping them to provide
support and share good practice
with other special and AP schools.
The time spent with
positive, like-minded
individuals has been
fantastic and gives you
a professional lift. The
training days make you
really think and reflect
within a supportive
environment and analyse
what you’re doing within
your own school, as well
as preparing you for the
role of SIP.

Environments
Practitioner
Course (TCEPT)
Location: In person (MB3)
Length: 1-3 years (flexible)
Introduction: The course has
been developed by practitioners
and ex-service users from Training
and Vocational Initiatives in
Personality Disorder (TVI), Cassel
Hospital, and The Consortium for
Therapeutic Communities. It is
aimed at anyone who is working
in an environment where providing
a therapeutic milieu is central to
supporting users of the service.
This training is flexible and can
be completed in 1-3 years. The
course provides a practitioner
level qualification to those working
in therapeutic environments,
including therapeutic communities,
enabling environments (EEs),
psychologically informed
planned environments (PIPEs),
psychologically informed
environments (PIEs), inpatient
wards, and day services.
