Full STEAM ahead at school fest

London City Schools’ long-running Fine Arts Festival 

has morphed into something new, showcasing a broader 

range of student talent. 

The newly named STEAM Festival shines the spotlight 

not only on student artwork and music performances 

but also on student explorations in science, 

technology, engineering, and math. The annual event 

has been migrating this direction over the last few years 

with participation from students involved in FFA, robotics, 

and the biomedical program. Visitors can expect 

to see technology and woodworking projects, robotics 

and three-dimensional printer demonstrations, and 

plenty of other STEAM program highlights. 

“The switch was made from Fine Arts to STEAM due 

to the festival including more areas of our curriculum 

and recognizing other areas of excellence within our 

school system,” said Jim Wolverton, athletics and student 

activities director. “This festival is a day to celebrate 

and show off the many abilities of our students.” 

London City Schools’ 2023 STEAM Festival is slated 

for 10 a.m.-1 p.m. April 1 at the high school and elementary 

school buildings. Students in kindergarten through

Anderson appointed to vacant council seat

Mount Sterling has a new village 

council member. 

Ross Anderson was sworn into office 

at the March 13 council meeting. 

He replaces Rob Longcoy who resigned 

in February due to a move outside 

village limits. Anderson will fill 

the remainder of Longcoy’s term 

which expires at the end of 2025. 

Anderson was one of two village 

residents who expressed interest in 

filling the vacancy. The remaining 

council members interviewed both 

candidates before making their selection 

for the appointment. 

This is Anderson’s first time serving 

in a public office. He has resided 

in Mount Sterling since 2012 and previously 

worked for a local auto dealership 

for 24 years before retiring in 

2017. He is originally from Circleville. 

“I love this little town, and I love 

the people in this little town,” Anderson 

said about 

Mount Sterling. 

“Everyone I’ve 

ever met is very 

accommodating 

and very nice. I 

thought it would 

be good to do 

something with 

the local people 

to get to know 

them better.” Ross Anderson 

Anderson said he has no specific 

agenda going into the position on 

council. He simply wants to help 

where he can and make constructive 

use of his free time. 

“Being retired, I have extra time to 

work with the (village council) committees,” 

he said, adding that he is a 

good listener. 

Arbor Day/Earth Day Celebration 

Also at the March 13 meeting, 

council member Becky Martin announced 

several events coming up at 

Mason Park, including an Arbor 

Day/Earth Day event coordinated by 

council’s new tree and beautification 

committee. 

The event is set for 10 a.m. April 

21 at the park and is open to the public. 

Following a flag raising, Mayor 

Marci Darlington will read a proclamation, 

and a representative from the 

Ohio Department of Natural Resources 

will talk briefly about the importance 

of trees. 

The village has already planted a 

couple of Sterling Silver linden trees 

at the park. Tom Byrne, Mount Sterling’s 

village administrator, will explain 

their significance and share 

facts about the village’s oldest tree. 

Approximately 100 students from 

Madison-Plains Local Schools’ thirdgrade 

classes will take part in the 

event. The students will help to place 

mulch around the new trees. 

After the public portion of the 

event, the students will be treated to 

lunch, goodie bags filled with games, 

flower seeds, and coloring pages, and 

a viewing of Dr. Seuss’s “The Lorax” 

at the Mount Sterling Community 

Center. 

The Arbor Day/Earth Day celebration 

is one of the steps the tree and 

beautification committee is taking toward 

earning Tree City USA status 

for the village. The group also is committing 

to planting additional trees at 

Mason Park and around the community. 

Other Park Events 

Other events coming up at Mason 

Park include a junior high softball 

tournament hosted by Madison-Plains 

Local Schools on April 22. The tourney 

serves as a fundraiser for the Mount 

Sterling Eagles Youth League and the 

school district’s softball program. 

A pre-school graduation is set for 

May 12. As part of the ceremony, the

12th grade are participating. The festival is open to the public and 

admission is free. 

Another new addition to the event is a festival within the festival. 

Carla Shaw, director of innovation and virtual programs, 

helped to launch the district’s first film festival. The contest was 

open to students and staff members. All 10 entries will be shown 

during the STEAM Festival. 

“We did this based on student interest,” Shaw said. “Some of the 

broadcast video students made a film that students watched districtwide 

last year. It was a success, so we decided to open things up to 

see if any other students had a talent and passion for making films.” 

Students and staff entered films in a variety of categories, including 

micro-movies, documentaries, music videos, and comedy. 

All entries were required to be no more than 10 minutes long. The 

longest one submitted is 8 minutes long. 

Some of the films were done independently, and several were 

submitted as class projects. Among the submissions are “Last 

Chance London,” a documentary about the London boys’ basketball 

team, and “Enter Sandman,” a music video created by the high 

school’s ukulele class. 

“We absolutely will do this again based on this year’s level of entries, 

the popularity of it, and student interest,” Shaw said about 

the film contest. “This is a great addition to the festival to showcase

The village’s parks and recreation committee 

will launch their movie night series 

on May 27. Movies also will be shown on the 

last Saturday of June, July, and August. 

Show time is dusk. Movie titles will be announced 

as the dates approach. 

Martin also provided an update on 

planned improvements to the park. Several 

new swing options should be installed in 

time for use this spring or summer. They include 

a tandem swing, a swing for 

mothers/fathers and babies, and options 

that are handicap accessible. 

“We also hope to have enough money 

(this year) to build a dog park,” Martin said, 

adding that later improvement phases will 

include installation of a walking path, rest 

rooms, and a water feature. “We are working 

diligently to get more grants to make 

things happen.” 

Martin said the committee welcomes 

input from the public. The group also hopes 

HELP House’s “His Little Lambs Easter Outreach” 

is set for 9-11 a.m. April 1. During the outreach, parents 

and families who are in need select Easter items to fill 

baskets for their children. HELP House is asking area 

businesses, groups, churches, and community members 

to consider donating one or more of the following items: 

• wrapped candies, chocolate and non-chocolate varieties; 

• individual boxes or bags of jelly beans; 

• Peeps candies; 

• chocolate candies such as crosses and bunnies; 

• small toys, games, and books - Christian-themed if 

you wish; 

• Easter stuffed animals or fluffies such as bunnies,

Joyce Phillips, chair of the nuisance and abatement committee, 

said former council member Craig Hix is returning to the group. 

She is looking for one additional person to join the committee. She 

noted that the group is working with the Nazarene Church to coordinate 

a three-day community cleanup at the end of April.

HELP House organizes Easter outreach

The Madison County Special Olympics junior varsity basketball team won the School Age Div. I hoops state 

championship title. 

Tigers roar at state tournament 

They were grrreat! 

For years, Tony the Tiger has been a cereal symbol 

for excitement and hard work, with the commercials 

often showing kids participating and excelling in various 

athletic endeavors. 

Recently, the Madison County Special Olympics junior 

varsity basketball team had a performance that 

would have made Tony proud. 

Madison County’s JV Tigers concluded a tremendous 

season by earning the Special Olympics School Age Div. 

I hoops state championship with a resounding 34-4 victory 

over the Williams County Sharks. The game took 

place at the Bowling Green Community Center. 

According to Lincoln Comer who coached the team 

with Mike Mast and Chris Zeeck, the team members 

made huge strides since they began together last fall. 

“With each passing week, they began to trust one another 

a little more and eventually bonded as a group,” 

Comer said. “Once they bought into the concept of team 

ball, we knew we had something special.” 

The Tigers, who finished with an 8-1 record, were led 

in the state championship game by Sam Smith and 

Hayden Thomas who tallied six points each. Teammates 

Brianna McGinnis and Jay Pedroso each added four 

points. 

McGinnis led in rebounds with six, followed by 

Thomas with five and Pedroso with five. 

Comer said the team wants to thank Madison Community 

Housing, the London Police Department, and 

the Madison County Sheriff’s Office for their support. 

In addition to those, Comer had another set of special 

acknowledgments. 

“The coaching staff would like to thank the parents, 

guardians, families, and fans for all their wonderful 

support throughout the season,” Comer said. “Having 

fans and positivity in the stands is always a big thrill 

for our athletes.”

Jim Durban • April 17, 1948 - March 19, 2023 

Remembering 

newspaper founder 

Jim Michael Durban, 74, of 

London, Ohio, passed away peacefully 

on Sunday, March 19, 2023, 

at Madison Health. 

Born on April 17, 1948, in 

Franklin County, he was the son 

of Betty Ann (Bentz) and Carl 

Smiley Durban. 

Jim was a 1966 graduate of 

Pleasant View High School. He 

went on to work as a bank teller, 

as an employee of Sun Oil Co., 

and as circulation manager for 

the Madison Press. He and his father, 

Carl, ran C&J Auction in 

Jim Durban 

West Jefferson for many years. 

Jim also worked the office at Tri-Green Interstate Equipment 

on auction days. 

In 1985, Jim and his mother, Betty, started the Madison Messenger, 

a weekly newspaper that covers all of Madison County. 

As the Messenger’s advertising manager and office manager, 

Jim took great pride in serving his customers and the community. 

He also was a Madison Health Foundation Business Partner 

and served on the Madison County 4-H Endowment Board. 

When it came to pursuing his interests or trying something 

new, Jim was all-in, from selling antiques at Heart of Ohio in 

Springfield to starting a gem-mining attraction to entertain visitors 

at local festivals. 

To know Jim was to know someone who lived and gave with 

his whole heart. He was generous, compassionate, fun-loving, 

and the most dedicated friend a person could have. He will be 

deeply missed. 

Jim leaves behind many friends, including special friends: 

Grant and Brittany Zerkle and their children Gavin, Ethan, and 

Izzy; Connie Ballah and Judy Green; Bob and Sue Emmelhainz; 

and longtime co-workers, Becky Barker and Kristy Zurbrick. 

He was preceded in death by his parents. 

A special thank-you is given to all of the friends who lent Jim 

support, companionship, and care over the past couple of years 

and to London Fire/EMS for their assistance the past few 

months. 

A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. March 28 in Eberle- 

Fisher Funeral Home and Crematory, London, with Gordon 

Johnson officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 

3 p.m. until the time of services.

ROTHEN 

Thomas Leon Rothen, 79, of London, Ohio, died on March 14, 

2023, in his residence surrounded by his loving family. Born on Dec. 

3, 1943, in Dayton, he was a son of Ozza Thomas and Elene (Jones) 

Rothen. 

After graduating from London High School, Thomas went on to 

join the United States Army where he proudly served his country 

during the Vietnam War. Following his time in the service, Thomas 

worked as a farmer in and around Madison County, and later became 

a custodian for the Jonathan Alder School District. Tom loved 

his family dearly, and his favorite pastime was spending time together 

and making new memories. 

Thomas leaves behind: his beloved wife of 57 years, Betty 

(Bowser) Rothen; children, Toby (Tina) Rothen, David Rothen, Rebekah 

(Richard) Reagan, and April (Daniel) Davidson; grandchildren, 

Misty (David), Andrew, Kylie, Stephen, David, and James; 

along with several other family members. 

Per Thomas’s request, public services were not observed. 

The family was served by Eberle-Fisher Funeral Home and Crematory,

MADDUX 

Paul E. Maddux, 82, passed away on March 16, 2023. He was a 

proud U.S. Army veteran, an avid hunter, enjoyed cooking for his 

family and spending time with them. He worked for the village of 

Mount Sterling and the city of London as a supervisor and utility 

director before retirement. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Opal Maddux. 

Paul is survived by: his loving wife of 57 years, Ginger Maddux; 

sons, Dwayne Maddux and Michael Maddux; brother, Jerry 

(Sherry) Maddux; sister, Bonnie (Ronald) Furniss; grandchildren, 

Samantha (Wayne) Coleman and Jessica Maddux; great-grandchildren, 

Maddux, Kinzley, and Braxton. 

The family will hold a private family graveside service at a later

Suzanne “Shelli” Ryder, 57, of Springfield, Ohio, died on March 

18, 2023, in her residence surrounded by her loving family. Born on 

April 15, 1965, in Springfield, she was a daughter of Betty (Stiles) 

and Thomas Ewry. 

Shelli worked various jobs, from working on a dairy farm, to a 

driver with Madison Ride, to housekeeping and factory work. An 

outgoing people person who never met a stranger, she had an infectious 

laugh and loved crafting and thrifting. 

Survivors include: her sons, Lance (Krista) Ryder and Kyle 

(Jenny) Peterman; grandchildren, Hanna, Haley, Austin, Madison, 

Lance Jr. “Bubby,” Mallory and Korbin; great-grandchild, Cayden; 

mother, Betty Nibert; siblings, Duane (Deanna) Nibert, Tonya 

Tackett and Rhonda Kiser; many nieces, nephews and cousins; stepsisters, 

Tomi Sieber, Tammy Carlsen and Tina Sanders; many dear 

friends, including the Peterman family and her life-long bestie, 

Misti. She was preceded in death by her father and brother-in-law, 

Jeff Peterman. 

Visitation and a funeral service were held on March 21 at Eberle- 

Fisher Funeral Home and Crematory, London. Pastor Charles

• London Kiwanis Club Easter Egg 

Hunt. The London Kiwanis Club will host 

an Easter egg hunt at 10 a.m. sharp on 

April 1 at Cowling Park. The start location 

will be located along Main Street. Participants 

are asked to arrive prior to 10 a.m. to 

locate their age group areas. The event is for 

children ages 12 and younger. 

• Mount Sterling—Mount Sterling’s “Eggstreme” 

Community Easter Jam is set for 9 

a.m.-noon April 1 at the Mount Sterling 

Community Center, 164 E. Main St. Breakfast 

with the Bunny runs from 9 to 11 a.m.

• Egg Hunt. Look for plastic Easter eggs 

hidden at the library April 1-29. Read the 

joke inside to a library staff member and 

earn a piece of candy, then hide the egg for 

someone else to find.

noon April 1, learn more about American 

Sign Language. Enjoy time with books, 

songs, and activities for children of all ages.

5:30 p.m. April 6 to learn how to make hair 

bows for their children in time for Easter 

gatherings. If you have a hot glue gun, bring
