I relate
this song to caves and the
mental health effects of journeys taken
through dark places. To me, the song is
about going through something, and
it then being possible to become
a completely different person. In
Deeper Still, my narrator finds peace
once they become used to the cave;
it gives them a different perspective on
life. This seems like a common experience
for those who have journeyed through
caves. Bridgers uses a cave metaphor
in this song: “Our cave’s collapsing /
I don’t want to be me anymore”. Can
people who have not experienced what
it is like to be in a cave, understand how
transformative the experience is?
