Beneath the city’s streets
An inner ear of stone,
Absorbing vibrations
Of past and present lives;
Of Tanners, Maltsters and ne’er do wells
Of people trying to sleep
Beneath the barrage of bombs.
Then silence, turns into rumblings,
The screech and tear of traffic
On the roads above
The footfall of a burgeoning population,
Pounding the streets in search of
Bargains, debauchery and promise
In this city of lights.
