Retailers Bucking Inflation As We Head Into Spring 

THIS is a great time of year when 

hope springs eternal in the retail 

industry. Where each of us wishes that 

the showers of April will be in the form 

of coins falling into our registers. 

THE first quarter was off to a decent 

start for most retailers and wholesalers. 

Many forecasters were surprised that 

the numbers were as good as they were 

based on the inflation and recession 

talk all around. With employment still 

strong and consumers not curtailing 

their spending it led to a good close to 

the first quarter. 

ANOTHER factor contributing to the 

decent markets has been a fairly mild 

winter in most parts of the country. 

With the exception of a few cold snaps 

in certain areas, the weather played 

a big part in fueling the economy. 

Everything is connected. The milder 

weather saved consumers on fuel costs 

which have gone up. This allowed more 

discretionary income and shoppers 

were shopping despite the increased 

inflation. 

THE first round of trade shows for the 

industry is encouraging. Attendance 

at the shows has been increasing 

steadily as buyers get back into the 

marketplace. More importantly is that 

show attendees have been placing 

orders which shows confidence in the 

industry. 

MANY retailers continue to increase 

their online presence, which is

essential in order to remain viable 

these days. Being that inflation is still 

a factor, we have seen more price 

negotiating between store buyers and 

their suppliers. This was evident at 

some of the shows I’d attended when 

negotiations were reminiscent of the 

“Let’s Make A Deal” TV show. 

WITH the nicer weather coming, 

more shoppers will be pushing aside 

their keyboards and heading out to 

our businesses to shake off the winter 

doldrums and experience the new 

seasonal merchandise. 

THIS is where you need to excel. 

Don’t just dust off the old winter goods 

or move your displays around. Price cut 

old inventory and turn it over to free 

up money for new goods. Follow the 

lead of the big box stores and freshen 

up your sales floor and displays with 

a bright and new look. New season 

means new colors, new signage and 

most of all, new merchandise.

Target Expanding and Remodeling 

TARGET Corp. announced plans to add 20 brand new stores and renovate 175 existing ones 

this year as part of its efforts to offer a differentiated shopping experience. Overall, Target plans 

to invest $4 to $5 billion this year to expand its guest-centric services, operations network of stores 

and supply chain facilities, digital experiences and other capabilities. The retailer also shared more 

about its plans to advance its enterprise efficiency efforts, aimed at optimizing its operations after 

years of rapid growth. 

THE company’s strategic plan is to propel their market share and profit growth over time. They 

are looking to scale their business with greater simplicity and to meet the evolving needs of the 

guests and deliver value for the shareholders. 

TARGET will be adding many more items in the $3-$15 ranges aimed at value conscious consumers. 

Additionally, many of the new stores will include new design elements aimed at reflecting their 

local communities as well as introduce sustainable features. 

THE retailer is also making investments in about 175 of its 2000 stores ranging from full remodels 

to the addition of Ulta Beauty at Target or shop-in-shops. 

World’s Largest Apple Store Set for Miami 

IT has been six months since the last Apple Store location was opened in the US. By the end 

of 2022, New Jersey was home to the country’s 273rd retail location for Apple. Now, there is a 

rumor we have been hearing that Apple is looking to open their largest store ever at the Miami 

World Center. 

ACCORDING to what we’ve heard, Apple is planning to open their new store in Miami at NE 8th 

and 1st Avenue in its “Jewelry Box” or yet to be built building on that corner. While the details are 

still unclear there are some reliable sources buzzing about this. 

MIAMI World Center has over 300,000+ square feet and 40+ dining, shopping and entertainment 

facilities. Miami is a hot spot for tourists, shopping and reaches a broad audience. Apple currently 

has four stores in the city. 

Dollar Tree Expanding in Food 

AFTER substantial leadership changes throughout last year, Dollar Tree has revealed better 

than expected annual results and during the earnings call announced it is ready to accelerate 

investments, including grocery. 

ACCORDING to Dollar Tree their shoppers have been reacting positively to the company’s 

multiple price points. Stores that fully lapped the rollout of “Break-The-Dollar” produced a 3% samestore 

sale increase in the quarter. 

TRAFFIC at the stores has been improving and trending positively as the chain has cycled the 

transition to a $1.25 price point chainwide. Gross profit escalated over 11% to $2.39 billion. The 

improvement was driven by higher initial mark-on and lower freight costs. 

PART of the chain’s innovation will be adding more space in frozen and refrigerated sections to 

accommodate consumer demand. The company has been aggressively expanding its $3, $4, $5 

frozen and refrigerated products across their 3,500 stores.

But Tobin had a good relationship with her 

printing representative, John Woodrow, who 

went the extra mile. He rallied the printing 

crew to put in overtime. As soon as he could 

get a partial batch, he loaded enough brochures 

into his car and drove them through rush-hour 

traffic. The brochures arrived with 10 minutes 

to spare before the VIP reception. 

Woodrow made Tobin a hero. But she knew it 

would not be the last time a rush printing job 

would be needed. So Tobin gave Woodrow a 

gift money can’t buy: sincere praise. She did it 

with a letter from her boss, the president of the 

agency, to Woodrow’s boss at the print shop. 

Although the letter was not long, it was powerful. 

It said that finding star employees was not 

easy, and the company should feel fortunate to

letter thanked the entire printing crew for coming 

through when it really counted. In closing, 

it said, “We were so impressed 

with John’s performance, we 

are taking the liberty of sending 

him a copy of this letter.” 

How would you feel if you received this letter 

about one of your employees? And how would 

you feel if you were the employee being 

bragged about to your boss? In this instance, 

the printer sent a thank you letter back to the 

agency that was twice the length of the one it 

received. The agency’s letter had been placed 

on a bulletin board for all the employees to 

read. The printer said it was the first time in the 

company’s history that it had received such a 

letter of genuine thanks.

It is amazing at how few people take the time to 

give another company sincere praise. Co-author 

Henry learned this when he produced a 

radio commercial using 3 nationally known entertainers 

in Hollywood. Although Henry had 

made many local commercials, it was his first 

experience directing the acting talents of big 

stars. A lot was riding on the spot’s success.

aired. As they say in the ad game, the commercial 

made turnstiles turn and cash registers 

ring. Henry sent a letter of praise that said more 

than thanks. The letter said that the commercial 

they recorded helped his client enjoy the best 

first quarter sales in company history. 

The morning that the Sound 

Advice partners opened the 

letter, Henry received a phone 

call. Despite the many awards, 

it was their first unsolicited testimonial. 

When asked if they 

could use it to show new 

clients, Henry told them that 

was exactly why he had sent it.

Advice, Henry always received 

what the shopkeepers in New 

Orleans call lagniappe – a little 

something extra. When you 

order a dozen pecan praline 

candies and the shopkeeper gives you 13, that 

is lagniappe. If you are extra nice to the counter 

help at the ice-cream parlor and you notice 

your scoop of ice cream is bigger than the other 

customers’, that too is lagniappe. Once the studio 

redid a commercial on its own initiative because 

it thought it could do a better job with the 

sound effects. Later Sound Advice even solved 

what could have been an ugly situation for 

Henry with AFTRA, the performers union, on 

a project that did not concern them. And they 

did not charge him for their time. Now that’s 

really lagniappe.

Since phone communications were severely 

limited, Henry decided to print a flyer for delivery 

to shelters to offer assistance to IOF 

members. When he went to a print shop and 

asked for the flyers by 2pm the next afternoon, 

he was told it was impossible. The print shop 

was a mess since the quake. Jobs were backed 

up. They were short staffed. Maybe he could 

have it by 6pm, but it would probably be the 

next day. Many people would try to demand 

that the work be done faster, but Henry tried a 

different strategy. 

A few doors down from the print shop was a 

bakery. Its specialty was extra-thick, extrachewy 

chocolate chip cookies with large 

chunks of chocolate. Henry bought a dozen of 

the cookies and took them back to the print 

shop. He attached a note that said: “Thank you

you flowers in advance. The stunned accounting 

clerk was so taken aback that she showed 

the flowers and the note of praise to the boss. 

The next month, a new clerk was in the position 

(we like to think the former one got a promotion 

and a raise) and he kiddingly joked that he 

liked candy. The next day a box of See’s candy 

greeted him at work. The Gage Group’s check 

was cut in record time. 

13. A final idea from Anne Boe, a keynote motivational 

speaker and author of Is Your “Net” 

Working? Boe suggests the following. The next 

time a newspaper prints a nice feature article 

about you, take it to a print shop. Have them 

create a reprint that looks like a newsletter. 

Then mail it to potential clients and those you 

want to stay in touch with. Boe did this with a 

recent profile of hers in the San Diego Business

After a successful 10-year career with a large 

hardware retailer, Thompson decided to step

Twin Peaks area. His advertising friend 

showed him how to lease a reverse telephone 

directory from the phone company for about 

$150. A reverse directory lists everyone who 

has a phone by street address. There are no unlisted 

numbers in a reverse directory. Thompson 

then drove the streets and made a check by 

every address that had a pool. Now he had a 

list of pool owners in his neighborhood. 

Next came the letter – or rather, letters. Thompson’s 

ad pal told him why he needed to make 

an offer to the pool owners to generate trials. 

Some good offers to try would be: free consultation, 

first visit for only $5, and 2 pool cleanings 

for the price of one. The trick, said the 

advertising executive, was to turn the reader on 

within 90 seconds. The rest of the letter had a

Secret #3: You’re On My List 

Great direct mail requires people with a little 

Sherlock Holmes in them. Unfortunately, most 

novice businesspeople approach list research 

like Inspector Clouseau. 

A classic story was reported by Neil Morgan in 

the San Diego Tribune: “At La Valencia Hotel, 

brochures were mailed to a prospective guest 

who wrote for information. The envelope came 

back from Springfield, Missouri, stamped ‘cannot 

deliver without inmate registration number.’“

Remember to think suspects and not prospects. 

Prospects are people who have expressed some 

interest in the product. For high-ticket items, 

the goal of the direct mail effort is usually to get 

prospects to raise their hands and say they are 

interested. Then a salesperson follows up. 

But a suspect is different. This is a person you 

suspect might be a prospect. For increased response 

rates, put your creative efforts into the 

hunt for suspects. The best suspects are clones 

of your current customers. The more you know 

about them the more clues you have to find 

suspects.
