LEAVING
A LEGACY FOR
ETERNITY

BY NANCY GERARD
A LASTING LEGACY
Joy in sadness? Gratitude in grief? How can opposite emotions
occupy the same space?
It happens regularly when people make end-of-life decisions
that will benefit others - decisions such as body organ
donations or estate plans that
include charitable giving.
Through gifts such as these,
death can give way to life.
Georgia-Cumberland
Academy said goodbye
to two very special
donors in the last
year. Elder and
Mrs. Kenneth
and Barbara
Mittleider
had been
supporting
the ministry
of GCA through their generous gifts to the Worthy Student
Fund for many years. The couple was passionate about
Adventist education and made it clear that they had included
GCA in their estate plan. During visits from GCA staff members,
Ken and Barbara always showed a keen interest in all aspects
of the school’s function. They encouraged and affirmed the
ministry and continued to invest in it until the very end.
After Ken passed away in November 2021, Barbara made their
year-end Worthy Student Fund gift, which would be their last
annual donation. Sadly, five months after losing Ken, Barbara
was also laid to rest.
Because of their great desire to see as many young people
as possible benefit from it, Georgia-Cumberland Academy
recently received a generous $50,000 gift from the
Mittleiders’ estate.
The impact of donations
like the Mittleiders’ gift to
the Worthy Student Fund
is transformative and lifechanging.
For Michael
Esua, ’23, coming to GCA
as a freshman was made
possible because he received
assistance from the Worthy
Student Fund. Michael’s
mother and father moved
to Georgia when he was
two. A younger brother
was born soon after, but life changed drastically when
Mr. Esua died of kidney failure. Michael was 8 years old
when his father passed away. A few years later, Mrs.
Esua contracted a virus that seriously damaged her
heart, causing her to leave her public school science
teaching position.
“The impact of donations like the Mittleiders’ gift to the
Worthy Student Fund is transformative and life-changing.”
Michael reflects on his time at GCA and is very grateful. “I can
say that GCA has had a great impact on my life! Before I became
a student, I was shy and not very confident. Since being at
GCA, I have grown in confidence, grown as a student, and have
become a leader. GCA has improved my academic and social life
but has also helped me tremendously throughout my spiritual
journey. Before being a student at GCA, my relationship with
God was not the best, due to my dad’s death. God put the right
people in my life at GCA to help me restore my relationship
with Him and to recognize the love from His Son who died for
humanity.”
Michael continues,
“I would like to say thank you to those who
supported me throughout my high school
journey! With you and the help of God, I can
proudly say GCA has had a big impact on
me. And the lessons I learned from being on
this campus will leave with me and guide me
through life.”
Ryan Ondap, ’23, also knows
firsthand how important
the Worthy Student Fund
has been while attending
GCA. As a child, Ryan and
his family moved from
Guam to the mainland
after his father lost his job.
Times were tough and Ryan
shares that “the reality was
that we were homeless and
unemployed.”
After spending some
time in California and Kentucky looking for work and living
with relatives, the family settled in Northeast Tennessee. His
parents eventually found work, but he describes the family as a
paycheck-to-paycheck kind of family.
Through the generosity of many people, the Ondap children
were able to attend Adventist elementary school. After
Ryan’s older brother Miles, ’21, came to Georgia-Cumberland
Academy and built a community of friends, Ryan knew he
wanted to come too. As Miles was graduating, their sister
Kelsey, ’25, arrived.
Ryan’s life has been significantly impacted by being at GCA. He
says, “I have met a lot of great people at GCA and made friends
and relationships that will hopefully last a lifetime. I don’t know
where I would be spiritually if I didn’t come to GCA. I also have
enjoyed the academics and the way the teachers support the
students.”
The Worthy Student Fund has been key to Ryan’s ability to be at
GCA and experience its rich environment. “We don’t make a lot
of money, and we have a big family of six, which is why we do
need help to be able to afford a GCA education. Yet throughout
my life, I have been able to see the blessings of God, despite
what Satan throws my way.”
When asked what he would like to say to those who support
students like him through the Worthy Student Fund, he said,
“I would like to say thank you. Your
donations make a difference in people’s lives.
What you do will not be forgotten and will
be paid forward. I hope God blesses you for
what you have done.”
Ken and Barbara Mittleider’s legacy of generosity will live on in
the lives of many students like Michael and Ryan, who benefit
from the GCA experience. Do you have a desire to provide a
legacy of generosity to GCA like the Mittleiders? Call 706-625-
Why
We
Give
GCA donors give for a variety of reasons.
For some, it is because of their firsthand
experience, realizing how their ability to
attend GCA would not have been possible
without the generosity of donors. Others
have seen how the GCA experience has
positively affected their child, relative,
or teenage church member. Still others
desire to make a gift for the future,
notating their gift intentions into an estate
plan. Which donor(s) do you most identify
with?
Eddie (GCA Alumnus) & Debbie
Klein (Former Staff Member),
GCA Alumni Parents
During his four years as a dormitory student, Eddie,
’74, made many wonderful memories and developed
life-long friendships. Years later, Debbie taught at GCA
as the Learning Resource/English teacher and considers
it a privilege she was able to teach so many incredible
students. Their children, Kelly (Klein) Herr, ’04, and
Kevin Klein, ’05, followed in their father’s footsteps and
graduated from GCA. Kelly’s husband, Robby Herr, is a
teacher at GCA, and Kevin’s wife, Rachel Stearns Klein,
’05, graduated from GCA. Being part of the GCA family is
a kindred trait of the extended Klein family!
Because classrooms are important spaces where faculty
and students bring that mission to life, Eddie and
Debbie pledged their support to the Continuing
the Mission campaign by funding one of the
new classrooms off the student center. Eddie and
Debbie desire for all those who enter this classroom
to access the wisdom available from Jesus Christ while
learning the skills to be productive citizens in this world.
Carlyle & Astrid Walton,
GCA Alumni Parents
Carlyle and Astrid Walton, along with their children,
Christopher, ’07, and Ashleigh, ’09, appreciated
the dedication of the GCA staff involved in caring
for and encouraging their children. Reflecting on a
conversation with Christopher and Ashleigh, Astrid
shares, “They felt that the faculty and staff showed
genuine authenticity and care, a willingness to engage
with students, and expressed a genuine interest in their
overall well-being.” As a result of their appreciation,
the Waltons established the Leadership
Recognition Endowment Fund. “We decided to fund
an endowment that would help school faculty and staff
feel supported by grateful parents. We thank God for
those in ministry at GCA as they positively influence
students to know, to love, and to serve,” said Astrid.
Friends of GCA
You don’t have to be an alumnus or a grateful parent to
invest in the ministry of Georgia-Cumberland Academy!
Donors who believe in what we do and want to invest
in a successful organization regularly give to make a
difference in lives at GCA, whether they have deep roots
at GCA or not!
Living on the other side of the country from GCA has
never kept one donor couple from supporting this
school. They are not alumni, and their kids did not go to
GCA. In fact, they have never even visited our beautiful
campus. Some years ago, though, they got a glimpse
of the power and impact of the GCA experience when
their nephews attended this school. After the boys
graduated, this couple continued to give because they
have seen what GCA does.
Because of their love for Adventist Education
and the high value they place on it, these
donors (who wish to remain anonymous) have
generously invested in the Worthy Student Fund.
From early personal experiences, they know what it is
like to need help, and both have a heart to make sure
students can have the GCA experience.
Knowing how challenging our world can be, this
generous duo delights to see young people thriving
because of GCA. “We live in a very difficult world, and
it is great to see God working to prepare the next
generation for His service…We are pleased to be a part
of the success you are investing into these kids.”
Lorraine Mauldin,
Friend of GCA
Lorraine Mauldin carried a
passion for young people her
entire life. Although she spent
most of her career working in
Georgia public schools, her heart
was for Adventist education.
Never married, her students
became her children. Canton,
Georgia was her mission field.
Her English classroom at Cherokee High School
was the place where she taught literature, writing,
and grammar, but it was also the place where she
ministered to kids and won their hearts.
Richard and Sandra Johnson,
GCA Alumni Parents
Richard and Sandra Johnson have deep roots at
Georgia-Cumberland Academy. Their nearest and
dearest connection to the school, however, is through
their daughter Hannah, ’18.
Richard remembers summertime visit to the campus
during the early 1960s when he was a young child
and his maternal grandfather, George Pearman,
was overseeing construction of the new conference
boarding academy. Richard and his sisters happily
played in the woods surrounding campus and enjoyed
being with their grandparents for weeks at a time.
The Johnsons believe strongly in Christian education
and acted upon their values by investing in GCA. Their
commitment to Georgia-Cumberland Academy’s
major facilities improvement initiative,
Continuing the Mission, resulted in the Johnson-
Pearman Administrative Suite, which is the hub
of daily school management.
No matter what your reason for giving may be, we are
thankful to all who partner with us in the important
ministry of Georgia-Cumberland Academy!
The impact of growing up during the Depression,
combined with her own family’s economic
impoverishment, gave her a tender heart for those
who struggled to provide a Christian education for
their children. As Lorraine heard stories of families who
sacrificed to have their children at Georgia-Cumberland
Academy and the way those young lives were being
transformed, her decision was made. She wanted to
provide a means for more young people to experience
Adventist education by including GCA as a significant
beneficiary in her estate plan.
Always careful with her money, this single teacher lived
simply and systematically planned for the future. When
she died in 2014, Lorraine Mauldin left the bulk of her
estate to Georgia-Cumberland Academy. Lorraine’s
gift made a difference for many students, especially
those needing special assistance during the COVID-19
pandemic. Susan Jenkins, business manager, notes,
“Lorraine Mauldin's estate gift was providential and
helped GCA students for several years. The gift's impact
was most acutely felt during the pandemic. When our
families were struggling financially and anxious about
how they could continue to afford GCA, the Mauldin
gift allowed us to offer additional financial aid to our
families affected by job loss, health challenges, and
the financial strain of the shutdown. Many, many
students and families were beneficiaries during
a time of anxiety, uncertainty, and deep need.
The Mauldin gift was a lifeline of relief and hope
for GCA and our families.”
Your Gifts
Make a
Difference!
One-Time and Reoccurring Gifts
Have you visited GCA’s website
lately? A few months ago, GCA
unveiled a new website design and
layout. Featuring clips of student life,
staff video interviews, and snapshots
of campus, the site also has a new
giving platform. Now, donors have
the opportunity to select whether
they would like to make a onetime
or reoccurring gift, as well as
what type of payment option they
prefer. In addition to traditional
credit and debit card gifts, GCA now
also accepts donations through
PayPal and Venmo, as well as
bank transfers. There are various
options for areas that you can
support including the Annual Fund,
Worthy Student Fund, mission
trips, facilities, music and sports
programming, and PSGCA. To view
these options, visit www.gcasda.org/
support.
Scholarship Funds
As a donor, setting up a scholarship
fund allows you to determine
the parameters of your help for
students. Scholarships can be
need-based or merit-based and are
generally funded by the donor on an
annual or recurring basis. Giving to
an already established scholarship
fund or establishing your own
scholarship fund allows you to help
students in specific ways that fit your
values and priorities.
Memorial Funds
Established to honor and remember
the memory of those who have
passed away, memorial gifts can be
used to enhance specific funds or
special projects.
Endowment Funds
An endowment is a fund that is set
aside and invested to continue in
perpetuity. A designated portion
of the return provides a stream
of income to support various
programs or scholarships. A named
endowment can be established
with any gift amount; however
the endowment fund will not be
activated until the fund amount
reaches $25,000. Endowments are
an important component of GCA’s
future growth and success. Your
partnership and vision through an
endowment gift will contribute to
the future sustainability of GCA. For
more information on endowment
opportunities and terms, please
Janet "DJ" Naus
For over 30 years, Janet Naus (lovingly
referred to as “DJ” on campus) has
served as a girls’ dean. Raised in Kansas,
DJ graduated from Enterprise Academy,
where she later became Girls’ Dean.
Following her service there, she moved
to Colorado where she became the Girls’
Dean at Campion Academy. Her ties to
friends living near Georgia-Cumberland
Academy led to her decision to accept
the Girls’ Dean position at GCA in 1993.
She married her husband, Randy, in
1994, and they settled in the Calhoun
area, where they have raised their two
children, Madison and Taylor.
Recently, DJ announced that this school
year will be her final year of service at
GCA. DJ explains that spending time in
prayer, along with the love and support
of her family, allowed her to dedicate the
past thirty years of her life to service as a
dean. She saw the big task of mentoring
and encouraging the young women on
academy campuses as a way to help
them see how God loves and cares for
them. For DJ, seeing her girls grow up
into young women, find happiness, and
establish their own families with children
who love the Lord has been her biggest
reward of being a dean.
Upon announcing her decision, tributes
began to pour in from alumni spanning
the decades of her service. Crystal
(Hunter) White, ’99, congratulated DJ,
sharing, “You served God’s purpose with
love, patience, grace, and wisdom. I
can only imagine what Heaven will look
like for you because of the many lives
you have impacted. My own life…I can’t
even describe what a difference you
made in it. The trajectory it took because
you simply cared…” Carrie (Worthen)
Barnett, ’01, said, “You were the best
dean! You have had such a huge impact
on so many of our lives! Thank you for
everything!!!” Bree Adams, ’17, reflected
on her experience at GCA with DJ as
her dean, saying, “I appreciate you and
everything you have done for me. You
made me feel seen and cared about
during my time at GCA and even now!
You have always been there to offer
encouragement or call me out. You are
amazing!!!”
As for what is next, DJ is letting God
lead. She feels that God has granted
her peace to move forward, and she
looks forward to following His will in her
life. She is eagerly waiting for Jesus to
come soon so that she can have a huge
family reunion in Heaven with all of the
students that she has known and loved
throughout the years.
