Welcome
I’m thrilled to welcome you—or welcome you
back—to the New Smyrna Beach Area. The
appeal of our lovely town goes far deeper
than our 17 miles of white sand beach and
highly rated surfing. Cutting-edge cuisine,
a nationally recognized arts scene, beloved
hotels, and historical ruins are just the
beginning of the adventure. With the ocean
on one side, the Intracoastal Waterway on the
other, and all kinds of exciting sustainability
efforts in between, our cozy city offers the
perfect getaway—whether you’re interested
in relaxing on the beach or discovering a new
passion. We can’t wait for you to experience
New Smyrna Beach for yourself.
Edgewater
Experience the slow pace of life by the river’s edge.
True to its name, this city just south of New Smyrna Beach lies
along the edge of the Indian River, putting great fishing and
spectacular views right at your doorstep. It’s no surprise that
legendary boat company Boston Whaler recently expanded its headquarters
here, or that this has become the epicenter of the area’s blueways.
Launch from Menard-May Park to explore these trails; paddle around
mangrove islands to see pelicans, herons, and other birds. Go angling
for redfish with a local charter. Then dine on fresh fish at hot spots like
JC’s Riptides and the Elliott's Steakhouse.
If you’re a surfer or would like to learn, get stoked! The PerfectSwell ®
Edgewater is coming soon. The facility will feature a world-class
PerfectSwell ® Surf Pool and will have a beachfront and cabanas to relax.
There will be a full-size restaurant and lounge. A lunch area and full retail,
which features prehistoric shell mounds and two turn-ofthe-20th-
century buildings. Then bring past and present
SITUATED ALONG FLORIDA’S A1A,
New Smyrna is known for its beautiful beaches
and surf spots, but the food scene here goes
far beyond typical beach bars and national
chains. Whether you’re downtown or in one of
the surrounding towns that make up the greater
New Smyrna Beach area, there are dozens of
area restaurants that whip sustainably-grown
local produce and fresh-caught seafood into
five-star dishes that stand the test of time.
ZUCCHINI BREAD
Ingredients
• Zucchini*
• Canola Oil
• Sugar
• Eggs
• Baking Soda
• Salt
1.5 tsp
1.5 tsp
1.5 tsp
1.5 tsp
1.5 tsp
Directions
• Begin by preheating the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Grate the zucchini using either a box cheese grater
on the thickest part or using a food processor with a
grating attachment.
• Combine on low speed with the oil, sugar, and eggs in the
bowl of a small stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment.
• While the wet portion is mixing, measure out the
dry ingredients.
• Sift the flour, baking powder and baking soda together
before adding the spices.Add the dry ingredients to the
wet ingredients and mix on medium low speed for 2-3
minutes or until everything is thoroughly combined.
• This recipe will yield 2 8x10 glass pyrex dishes or
1 hotel pan. Spray the dish with non stick cooking spray,
and line it with parchment paper, all the way to the top.
• Pour batter into prepared dishes, and bake for approximately
35 minutes.Once the time has elapsed, test the doneness by
inserting a skewer, toothpick, or cake tester into the center.
• If there is nothing left on the tester, the bread is done.
Otherwise add 3-5 minutes, testing again afterwards.
• If you are feeling adventurous, making a simple whipped
butter to accompany the bread is the way to go.
• Just whip a pound of butter in a stand mixer fitted
with a paddle.
• Add local honey*, brown sugar, and cinnamon to taste.
Whip until light and fluffy.
Old-Florida favorites.
PLENTY OF SPOTS ARE WORTH THE DRIVE OUT of New Smyrna Beach proper. Oak Hill is home to
nine generations of the Goodrich family, who started Goodrich Seafood in the early 1900s. Now
more than a century later, Goodrich Seafood & Oyster House is still an institution. It’s run by the
Galbreath Restaurant Group but still serves up the same favorites—including Friday and
Saturday’s all-you-can-eat fish and shrimp specials, fried frog leg baskets, and fried alligator
tacos. Out in Osteen, the casual and homey Osteen Diner welcomes visitors with loaded burgers,
classic breakfast platters, and meat-and-three style hot plates.
WATER PLAY. IT’S TIME.
The ocean washes cares away.
Truly. If there’s one thing days at New Smyrna
Beach will teach you, it’s to never underestimate
the effect of saltwater.
Gaze toward the Atlantic from the white sands
of this barrier island beachfront, and it’s like a
happy dream realized. Or venture into the tidal
marshes, lagoons and bays of the Indian River in
the fascinating ecosystem between New Smyrna
Beach and the mainland. Maybe there will be a
fishing rod in your hand, or you’ll decide to go
all in to swim, surf, or gear up for a SCUBA dive.
Nothing compares to the weightless release of
a plunge into sun-warmed saltwater.
Aah, the freedom.
Island-Ocean-Lagoon
Kind of Days
ARRIVE VIA THE CAUSEWAY, and you’re already oceanside. The
sandy shoreline in New Smyrna Beach stretches for 17 miles
between Ponce de Leon Inlet and Canaveral National Seashore.
Nature’s beauty is sparkling in every direction.
You’ll want to get your toes onto that sugary sand, but beach play is just
the start. Maybe you’ll also play through on the golf links, pedal coastal
trails, or stand-up paddle into the citrusy sunshine.
And for those who dream of the catch, offshore charter boats motor out
daily from New Smyrna Beach marinas to the Gulf Stream. Inshore, the
Indian River’s path on the sheltered backside of the island is a
remarkable habitat for marine life. Fly fishing for redfish is red hot.
Surfing
Catch A Wave
THERE ARE A FEW KEY INGREDIENTS that
make a surfing spot great, and New Smyrna
Beach has it all. From steady, year-round
waves, miles of white sandy beaches to its
laid-back vibe, this beloved surfing hub has
been a go-to among avid surfers for decades.
Its legendary surf scene has been recognized
worldwide, making a number of prestigious
lists, including National Geographic magazine’s
“World’s Top 20 Surf Towns” and Surfer
magazine’s “Best Surf Towns in America.”
Here, the surf is always up, and the adventure
is always high. Thanks to rock formations
located a few miles offshore, the wave breaks
are some of the most consistent in Florida,
if not the East Coast. And because surf
conditions are always right, New Smyrna
Beach is a top destination for some of surfing’s
premier annual competitions, including
those held by the American Professional
Surfing Lessons &
Summer Surf Camps
WHETHER YOU WANT TO SHARPEN YOUR SKILLS or just a
few basics, you can learn from some of the best pro-wave
riders at Jimmy Lane’s Surfing Academy.
Competitive pro surfer Jimmy Lane launched his popular
school more than 36 years ago, and since, he has trained
more than 30,000 surfers of all ages and experience levels.
“Surfing is about a relationship with nature,” says Lane.
“The ocean and the waves connect us all, and there’s no
greater feeling than to be out in the water.”
Camps focus not only on surfing skills and techniques but
also on the importance of water and ocean safety.
“Success in learning how to surf is also about understand ing
how to be ocean smart,” Lane says. “During camp, you’ll
gain a deep respect for the ocean as well as build your
confidence by understanding and testing your limits.”
Maintaining a healthy mind and body helps surfers
enhance their riding abilities, so exercises like paddle drills
are part of the program.
“It’s the most fun you will ever have in the water,” Lane says.
“And yet one of the most physically demanding sports there
is. It requires a wide range of physical abilities to be able
to paddle out and get your balance on your board.”
Campers also learn about rules of the water, equipment
safety, and surfing etiquette.
Beyond summer camps, private one-on-one lessons are
available for experts and amateurs alike. Custom sessions
can also be arranged for groups, such as birthdays and
special corporate events.
BELOW THE SURFACE of the broad blue expanse of the Atlantic and filigreed ribbons of freshwater
blueways and estuaries of the Indian River, which anchor New Smyrna Beach and meld it with
the ocean’s saltwater, is a spectacular underwater garden that includes vividly-hued fish, silvered
A Renewal of Life:
Shuck and Share
PERHAPS NEW SMYRNA BEACH’S most celebrated inhabitant is the plump, delectable
oyster, a seafood restaurant favorite for the well-crafted palate in appetizers, entrees or
outdoor roasts. That means thousands of pounds of oyster shells could potentially be
tossed into landfills, were it not for the innovative Shuck and Share program. Shuck and
Share is an oyster shell recycling initiative that began at the Marine Discovery Center
and puts the shells, which still contain live larvae, back into the environment as reefs for
new oyster beds, in effect creating a magnificent living, breathing shoreline. Best of all, the
homegrown program has spread to coastal communities across the United States, assuring
the life cycle of the oyster doesn’t end when it’s shucked from the shell and served on a plate.
Whether you walk quietly along the wide beaches and watch the waves drift in from
the Atlantic, or along the blueway and listen to the avian choruses in full song or stand
amazed as the sun rises over the Atlantic in its flamboyantly golden and pink splendor of
this maritime kingdom, you realize that no better place exists for close encounters of the
nautical kind than New Smyrna Beach. Visit www.visitnsbfl.com to plan your journey to
Hundreds of species live in the community’s woods and
waters, but spotting wildlife is not always a given, says
Warren Reynolds, a certified Florida Naturalist who leads
eco-tours by kayak and bicycle. “This isn’t Disney,” he
through the Florida Fish and
Wildlife Commission’s Salt
along a seawall built by
Scottish colonists in the mid-
are six species of birds that
nest on a pair of mangrove
by Presidential order in 1908
thanks to avian enthusiast
Theodore Roosevelt. Pack
This shallow 2.12-mile trail, laid
out by a local Eagle Scout, is
well suited for first-time
paddlers. A series of spoil
islands (formed decades ago
when the Army Corps of
Engineers dredged the
Intracoastal Waterway) shelter
a maze of tidal creeks from the
The Creative Scene
is filled with well known local and national artists, plus
numerous options for visitor participation.
SURROUNDED BY MILES of picturesque
waterways, scrub oaks, sabal palms and
sand pines, it is no wonder artists from
around the country find fulfillment and
productivity in this enchanting city. The best
way to seize the thriving art scene is a walk
through the Canal Street Historic Art District, a pedestrianfriendly
area leading to an abundance of galleries.
Start at The Hub on Canal, a central co-op styled gallery of
about 63 artists gathered in a 10,000-square-foot historic
building that was once a silent movie theater. Founded in
2010, The Hub on Canal was designed for an eclectic
group of artists to create, showcase, and teach art in a
communal environment.
“Visitors can see one or two artists working at any time and
are able to engage with them,” explains Richard England,
President of The Hub on Canal. “They can even talk
technique with a painter.”
The Hub on Canal also offers the talents of artists in
ceramics, sculpture, glass, photography and other
disciplines. Adults and children can participate in a variety
of classes, from music and performance events (mostly in
winter), language and acting, to a fashion club which
culminates in the creation of a New York style fashion
show, and other activities devoted to the arts.
In walking distance is Arts on Douglas, a 3,500-squarefoot
gallery that once was a used furniture warehouse, and
before that a Ford showroom and service center. An offsite
part of the Atlantic Center for the Performing Arts, the
internationally acclaimed exhibition space with prominent
artist residencies located on the 2,300-acre Doris Leeper
Spruce Creek Preserve a few miles away, Arts on Douglas
offers a two gallery presentation. There is the “Main”
which exhibits a broad range of styles, and the “alt_space"
devoted to contemporary Florida artists in conceptual art,
sculpture, video, digital and new media. You are welcome
to engage in a dialogue about art process, method,
concepts and materials.
IN THE HISTORIC DISTRICT is Jane’s Art Center located in a cool
gallery exhibits internationally and nationally acclaimed and
upcoming artists. There is also a 1,200-square-foot ceramic
studio open to all levels of participants with classes conducted
by established artists and visiting professors.
The nearby Artists’ Workshop is a perfect place to take an arts class or
enjoy a workshop and various gallery exhibitions. Once a month is the
Gallery Walk, which takes place the first Saturday from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. You
will visit four galleries offering changing exhibits with opportunities to ask
questions or make purchases.
WE’LL LET YOU IN ON A SECRET:
there really is no bad time to visit New
Smyrna Beach. The steamy days of summer
give way to comfortable, arid fall weather,
wonderfully mild winters, and warm springs.
That’s the beauty of Central Florida, and
that’s why you can count on beloved
monthly rituals year-round, like our sip-&-
Our tight-knit, friendly community is full of
fun, very welcoming, and always dreaming
up festive ways to gather a crowd, whether
that be for music festivals, foodie-friendly
cook-offs, beach runs, or more cultural
venues like our well-established IMAGES
festival of the arts. You might consider
anchoring your visit on a particular event.
In Springtime
There is always something cooking. Flagler Avenue routinely
closes to traffic in order to cater to hungry diners who purchase
“passports” allowing them to sample multiple unique,
savory preparations by a variety of local chefs: there’s a
late January progressive cook-off Chowder Festival, a Mardi
Gras-centric Gumbo Festival, a springtime Beach Food
Festival, an annual Taco Challenge that takes place on Cinco
de Mayo and again in the fall, and a late August Shrimp
& Seafood Festival where the avenue literally becomes a
walking foodie mecca. Similarly, the monthly Wine Walk
invites you to sample twenty small pours of more than 100
wines while you stroll and shop.
Say “I Do ”
CELEBRATE YOUR BIG DAY
in a memorable way. Say I do with spectacular
serve up gorgeous scenery of the waterway. You
can also go rustic at the Delamater House, which
SUMMER BRINGS the free Summer Concert
Series at Riverside Park. Every Thursday in
July and August, crowds gather by the gazebo
in the warm glow of early evening to enjoy
rotating sets of bluegrass, rockabilly, Latin
music, and classic rock. It really is a tribute to
the town’s generous spirit that so many music festivals do
not charge a cover fee. Flagler Avenue in particular hosts
multiple musical events throughout the year such as the
Shamrock & Roll Music Festival around St. Patty’s Day; the
VooDoo Music Festival leading up to Mardi Gras with more
than 50 free shows along the Avenue; and July 4th’s Red,
White & Blue Music Festival in which designated taverns,
cantinas, and sports bars open their doors free of charge for
a lively summer bash. Similarly, the New Year’s Eve
Countdown Jam lasts nearly all week long. But it’s late May’s
New Smyrna Beach Jazz Festival that is the biggest draw
with its enviable lineup of sax quartets, jazz trios, larger
ensembles, and solo crooners. You can duck into each club,
and snack on tasty street food, vibing on the various rhythms
as you make your way from the Indian River to the Atlantic.
Perhaps the most nostalgic event of all takes place on Historic
Canal Street on the second Saturday of each month: Classic
Cars on Canal features prize hot rods, coupes, Classic Cadillacs
and jaw-dropping Royces, then cruise beneath the palms,
parking diagonally and popping open their hoods for eager
viewers to admire the polished vintage engines. It’s exemplary
New Smyrna Beach hospitality, open to all, with free
musical entertainment and vendors selling kettle corn, hotdogs,
and soda: a spirited slice of
Americana, and a reason to
visit again and again.
BEACH GOALS. ONE PLANET.
Switching from plastic to plant-based, compostable
alternatives. Growing organically. Cleaning trash
from beaches to reduce the amount that blows into
the ocean. Water conservation and finding better
ways to collect rainwater for future use.
These are just some of the steps taken by partners
in the One Planet Living initiative in the New Smyrna
Beach Area. As the entire world is changing—so
very rapidly lately—travel and business leaders in
the New Smyrna Beach Area have embraced innovative
thinking and action when it comes to sustainability.
The goal is to take good care of each other,
and of the precious strand of beaches, islands, and
tidal lagoons in this extraordinary slice of Florida.
One Planet Living is an international organization
that promotes long-term sustainability through
easy-to-grasp eco-friendly practices. Taking part in
One Planet Living is one of many measures that the
New Smyrna Beach Area has taken to protect its
natural beauty and promote eco-friendly tourism.
In fact, New Smyrna Beach was the first city in
Florida to join the organization. And the City’s
guiding focus is sustainability—an essential for
the ecological health of this special seaside locale
of sand beaches, lush parks and preserved lands,
along with the naturally diverse ecosystem of tidal
bays and lagoons along the Indian River.
NAVIGATING A GREENER FUTURE is vital.
Sustainability measures taken so far by the City
of New Smyrna Beach are wide-ranging, and
include a city-wide ban on polypropylene
and polystyrene food service containers and
straws. The New Smyrna Beach Area Visitor’s
Bureau (NSBAVB) encourages recycling and helps
to coordinate volunteers for beach clean-ups.
The bureau is also a destination member of
the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.
Over at Third Wave Café and Wine Bar, with its
enchanting garden seating, the owners and crew
focus on environmentally friendly food sourcing.
A particular emphasis is on “smart catch” sustainable
sources of seafood. And the oceanfront
Springhill Suites by Marriott is another eager
sustainability partner. Among its efforts, the
hotel where Flagler Avenue meets the Atlantic
