WHO SHOULD PAY
FOR COSTLY
BY-ELECTIONS?
• By Heidi Slade
THE COST of by-elections has
resurfaced, with calls for law
changes to ease the burden on
ratepayers.
It comes after Reuben Davidson
was selected as Labour’s
Christchurch East candidate for
October’s general election - just
months after he was re-elected
to the Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū
Banks Peninsula Community
Board. He also chairs the board.
Seventeen days after Shreejana
Chhetri was elected to
the Waipapa Papanui-Innes-
Central Community Board in
October last year, she resigned.
Chhetri told media at the time
she had to balance a passion
to serve her community with
maintaining a job to support
her family.
The subsequent by-election,
which saw Ali Jones return to
local body politics, cost ratepayers
$75,000. Questions were
asked at the time why Chhetri
had stood in the first place.
Both Davidson and Chhetri
stood for The People’s Choice
political grouping aligned to
Labour.
City councillor Sam MacDonald,
who chairs the city council’s
finance and performance committee,
said yesterday legislation
needs to change.
Under the Local Electoral
Act 2001, if a vacancy occurs in
the office of an elected member
of a local board or community
board more than 12 months
before the next triennial general
election, the vacancy must be
filled by an election.
Thursday March 30 2023 The Star
ON OCTOBER 20 1862, the
Albion Cricket Club wrote to the
city council expressing outrage
about a young man who insisted
on riding his horse through
cricket games in Latimer Square.
Meanwhile on July 5, 1862,
Officer of Customs W G Carver
wrote to the city council
wanting to step down from
his responsibility for firing the
signal gun every Saturday at
2pm for the regulation of time
for the public.
These and many more of
our most vulnerable, fragile
and fascinating early records
from the city council archives
collection are now being
digitised.
“We have a very interesting
collection that isn’t very well
known and we’re slowly working
on digitising some of these to
make them more accessible to
the public,” said city council
archivist Annabel Armstrong-
Clarke.
“They make for a wonderful
glimpse into what life must have
been like in the very early days
of Christchurch.”
The most recent digitised
item from the collection to be
published is the first volume of
inward correspondence to the
city council from May 1862 to
March 1863.
“We’ve also recently digitised
the Christchurch Municipal
Council minutes and city
surveyor reports from 1862, as
well as a very interesting set of
reports and correspondence
from the Inspector of Nuisances
between 1862 and 1864,”
Armstrong-Clarke said.
“The inspector was appointed
by the council sanitary committee
in 1862 to report ‘nuisances’
relating to rubbish, sewerage,
drainage, health, traffic and
roads. It didn’t seem like a great
job as in 1863 they went through
three inspectors alone.”
The next five items to be
published digitally will include
the city surveyor records from
1864 to 1865 and the Inspector
of Nuisances from 1864.
The archives collection is
governed by the parameters of
the Public Records Act 2005.
Under the act the city council is
required to preserve corporate
records deemed as having
long-term interest, to both aid
accountability and enhance
and promote the historical and
cultural heritage of the city.
Digitising frail archives that
would not otherwise be publicly
accessible fulfils part of those
requirements.
archives collection can be
Cold snap,
substation
repairs
nearly cause
power cuts
TRANSPOWER came very close
to power cuts in Christchurch on
Tuesday night – but says it won’t
have to repeat its call to conserve
electricity.
The national grid operator put
out the request to residents in
the city, Rangiora and Kaiapoi
about 6pm, as power use spiked
due to the cold snap and one of
its substation transformers was
being repaired.
“About five o’clock we got the
call from the system operator that
load was peaking
higher than had
been forecast,”
Transpower grid
delivery general
manager Mark
Ryall said.
With one
of three
transformers in
Islington needing
repair, the operator needed to
Mark Ryall
protect the other two from being
overloaded by reducing demand.
It had now reconfigured the other
two transformers.
“Load was getting very close
to the limits of one of the
transformers when the action was
taken.”
Ryall said the repairs were
ongoing but the operator would
be able to manage demand.
“We actually made some
changes in the network to
enable them to make changes
automatically if the same thing
happens again this morning so
there should be no issue.”
Ryall was confident the
situation was under control and
Cantabrians did not need to
worry about further threats of
power cuts.
The third transformer would
be back online tomorrow, and
a fourth would be added in a
couple of months, so the problem
shouldn’t happen again, he said.
MacDonald thinks the
candidate who finished with the
second-most votes should be
promoted to the vacant position
without having to have a byelection.
Another way to alleviate the
cost to ratepayers could be for
the person who has resigned to
pay for the by-election, if it was
not for medical or similar type
reasons.
“(In the result of community
board resignations) the person
who came second would be
elected . . . that’s my preference,”
he said.
“Or the person who resigns
pays for it . . . unless the
individual is under extenuating
circumstances.”
MacDonald said the cost of byelections
should not be borne by
ratepayers.
“They’re a hugely expensive
exercise and actually they don’t
generate a lot of public interest.
I don’t think that is a cost that
should be paid by the ratepayer.”
“At the moment we’re looking
at a hundred grand in by-election
costs that ratepayers will never
see value from.”
MacDonald said that these
were workable solutions and that
the legislation change was not a
council decision, and would have
to come from the Local Electoral
Act.
“I think it’s a discussion worth
having,” MacDonald said.
Davidson says he will donate
his community board fees to the
Mayoral Relief fund.
He would not say when asked
by The Star yesterday if he would
have resigned had The People’s
Choice or he had to pay for the
by-election.
“Councillor MacDonald has
Jones said was there must be
Homeless man
jailed for attacking
disabled woman
• By Emily Moorhouse
A DISABLED woman who let
a homeless man sleep on her
couch was repaid by getting
“thrown around” and sexually
violated in an attack that led to
her sleeping with a bat under
her bed.
Tyler Timu, who prefers the
last name Wotton-Kerr, was
sentenced at the district court
yesterday for his attack on
the woman. He also stole the
woman’s phone and Kiwi Access
Card.
The woman’s victim impact
statement, read by a support
person, outlined how the attack
left her fearing for her safety
and feeling “trapped” inside her
own home.
She told Timu she had been
assaulted by men in the past,
so was wary of letting him into
her home but he assured her she
was safe with him.
The victim, whose name is
suppressed, said she now sleeps
with a bat under her bed. She
rarely goes out and is constantly
looking over her shoulder.
Judge Tom Gilbert said
Timu’s “undoubtedly serious”
offending had a huge impact
on his victim, who now suffers
from post-traumatic stress disorder
and anxiety.
He acknowledged Timu’s
difficult upbringing, which
included abuse and led him to
being homeless for most of his
adult life.
Judge Gilbert gave Timu
discounts for his early guilty
pleas, difficult background and
remorse, arriving at an end
sentence of three years and 10
months’ imprisonment.
Chance to catch burglar missed
after van tip-off not acted on
• By Susan Sandys
A BURGLAR using a distinctive
white van appears to have
slipped through police hands at
the weekend.
The Star reported last week the
van, with registration KPD-407,
was involved in two burglaries.
The first was Boxing Day, when
$50,000 in goods and a $30,000
car were stolen from a Tai Tapu
address.
The van was captured on
CCTV leaving the scene.
The second was on March 9,
when a Burnham homeowner
surprised the burglar, tussled
with him, and took a photo of
the van as the offender escaped
and drove off.
Police told the The Star
they have identified a suspect
in relation to the Burnham
burglary, but are still trying to
find him.
They have not confirmed
whether the van has been sighted
at any other burglaries.
A Woolston resident who saw
The Star article called police
on Friday morning, saying the
vehicle, a Mercedes campervan,
was regularly parked at a
SIGHTINGS: A Woolston man says he spotted this van, linked to burglaries at Burnham (left) and Tai Tapu (right), parked
at a social housing unit over the weekend.
social housing unit in his
neighbourhood.
Police told him to call 111
when the van returned.
He did that on Friday
afternoon, but believed police
did not respond.
The van was also there over
the weekend and on Monday
night.
The description of the
driver of the van matched an
identification given to police by
the Burnham householder, he
said.
The identification was
made when police showed
the Burnham man a mug shot
which he confirmed was the
man he tussled with in his
house.
The Woolston resident said
the man was aged in his mid to
late 50s, of stocky build, about
175cm tall, with heavily tattooed
arms and legs.
A police media spokesperson
did not respond to a question
from The Star about whether
police were aware of the van
sightings in Christchurch.
Last week, before the
Christchurch sighting, police
said they had conducted
inquiries at the van owner’s
registered address, which had
“proved negative.”
Next door neighbour murder case:
• By Anna Leask and Sam
Sherwood
AN independent Corrections
review has dismissed the Parole
Board’s allegations of a “serious
failure” around the release of
the man who murdered Juliana
Bonilla Herrera in her Addington
home just 72 days after getting
out of prison.
Joseph James Brider was
sentenced to life in prison and
preventive detention last month
for the murder of the Colombian
native in her Grove Rd flat – described
by Justice Jonathan Eaton
as brutal, cruel, callous, depraved
and sadistic.
At sentencing, Brider was
described as a psychopathic
offender who lacked any remorse
or empathy and was undoubtedly
a significant and “very real”
danger to women. Brider had
been released on parole – after
being refused five times – with
strict conditions including GPS
monitoring and a curfew.
He moved into a flat adjoining
Herrera’s and within days
became obsessed with her.
The Parole Board had refused
to release Brider on multiple
occasions and only agreed to do
so – shortly before his sentence
end date – so they could impose
conditions and put monitoring
in place.
REVIEW: Allegations
of a serious failure
around the release
of Joseph Brider,
who murdered
Juliana Herrera just
72 days after getting
out of prison, have
been dismissed by
an independent
Corrections review.
PHOTO: NZ HERALD
That monitoring – including
GPS tracking and a curfew – fell
to Corrections once Brider was
living outside the wire.
After last month’s sentencing
Parole Board chairman Sir Ron
Young released a statement
highly critical of Corrections’
management of Brider.
His comments came after
an independent report from
Professor Devon Polaschek into
the Parole Board’s decision in
October 2021 to release Brider on
parole.
Polaschek had concluded the
Parole Board’s decision to release
Brider was reasonable based on
the information available to it.
Young said the board’s
preferred address for Brider was
the Salisbury Street Foundation.
He said the address was
“discussed extensively” at his
parole hearing.
However, the board was unable
to release Brider there because
there was no room for him.
”I now believe the information
provided to the Board by
Corrections that there was no
room available at the Salisbury
Street Foundation for a release on
parole was not correct.
“It is my understanding
that after the June 2021 parole
hearing, where it was clearly
intended that Mr Brider would
be released to the Salisbury
Street Foundation, Corrections
contacted the Foundation and
cancelled the referral. This
occurred in August of 2021.
“The Parole Board was not
made aware of this significant
change in the release plan by
Corrections at any time before
Mr Brider’s release on parole.”
Juliana Bonilla-Herrera was
murdered by her neighbour,
Joseph Brider while he was on
parole for rape.
Young said the Salisbury
Street Foundation had now
told the Parole Board it had a
bed available for Brider “if he
had been released in June” and
“would have still made a room
available for him following the
October parole hearing”.
“Given the Board’s clear
commitment to releasing Mr
Brider to the Salisbury Street
Foundation, as shown in the
Board’s hearing decision of June
2021, this was a very serious
failure by Corrections to tell the
Board of the cancellation,” Young
blasted.
“It is the Parole Board and not
Corrections that decides where
an offender may be released to
on parole. To do that effectively
the board relies on accurate
information from Corrections.
Review refutes Parole Board claims
“Corrections had no authority
from the board to withdraw the
application to the Salisbury Street
Foundation when it was aware
that was the board’s preferred address
and that a bed was available
for Mr Brider.
“It is clear to me that Corrections’
failure to provide this vital
information compromised the
board’s decision-making.
”The Board would most definitely
have released Mr Brider to
the Salisbury Street Foundation if
it had known the correct facts.”
Corrections launched an independent
review into the claims.
That was released on Wednesday,
undertaken by Victoria
Heine KC.
Corrections chief executive
Jeremy Lightfoot said he accepted
the findings of the report – and
its two recommendations.
“The review found that Corrections
did not provide incorrect
information to the Parole Board
ahead of Mr Brider’s final parole
hearing, and that Corrections
was entitled to form the view,
based on the information our
staff had, that there was no
guarantee of a bed being available
for Mr Brider on his release
date with (the Salisbury Street
Foundation).
“I remain confident that my
staff were focused on securing an
appropriate placement for him
MURDERED: Juliana Hererra was killed by Brider in her
Addington home in January 2022.
in advance of his parole date and
worked within available guidance
to do so.”
Lightfoot said information
provided by Corrections to the
Parole Board for the October
2021 hearing outlined that it had
pursued an alternative release
address for Brider with another
support service for a number of
reasons.
“These included that there was
no guaranteed bed at (Salisbury
St), concerns around Mr Brider’s
ability to engage with (its) longterm
intensive reintegration programme
due to the short period
of time he would be on parole,
and to continue his engagement
with (another provider) in the
community.
“However, the review also
found that the Parole Board
would have benefited from being
explicitly advised that we had
cancelled the referral to (SSF)
due to the uncertainty around
whether or not a bed would be
available in time for release.
“I take this finding seriously
and am fully committed to ensuring
the Parole Board has all
the information it needs to make
an informed decision in cases
involving high-risk offenders.”
Lightfoot said he and Young
“agree that Corrections’ current
guidance to our frontline staff
could be clearer” in terms of
what information is shared with
the Parole Board in high-risk
cases to “ensure different release
proposals can be fully explored
before deciding to grant someone
parole”.
“The chair of the Parole Board
and I have agreed to work
together on strengthening our
information-sharing processes.
“As part of this, we will be issuing
updated guidance to frontline
staff on what information to
include in parole assessment reports.
This will include guidance
on when staff should include
additional information about any
changes to a release proposal that
is different to the proposal put
forward in a previous hearing.”
Lightfoot said he also accepted
the review’s recommendation
that where a referral to a provider
has gone through Corrections’
internal panels, any proposals to
withdraw such referrals “must go
back through the same panel to
ensure additional oversight into
this decision-making”.
“The review also recommended
working with our accommodation
service providers to improve
the processes for confirming
whether or not a bed is available
for people released from prison,
and the timeframe for this confirmation,”
he explained.
“I have accepted this recommendation
we will be working
with our providers on how we
can achieve this.
“Once again, we must always
learn from any case where a person
has reoffended in the most
horrific way.”
Lightfoot said Herrera’s murder
was “tragic”.
“And our thoughts remain with
Juliana’s family and loved ones,”
he said.
“Corrections manages the
most complex, dangerous people
in New Zealand and we must
always learn from any case where
a person has re-offended in the
most horrific way.”
March is
B Corp month
Christchurch pioneers are making
business better for the city
Sustainable business is a growing movement that
aims to create significant impact on the environment
and society. Increasingly, consumers are choosing
brands that align with their values and businesses are
picking up on it. In a recent survey by the Canterbury
Employers’ Chamber of Commerce, two-thirds of
local businesses said they considered sustainability
when making decisions while almost a third said
sustainability was at the front of their minds.
Enter B Corp, a certification that has been available in
New Zealand since Christchurch business Eagle Protect
became the first to be accredited in 2014. Rather than being
driven solely by profit, B Corps are grounded in environmental
and social good. As it was for women’s suffrage, Christchurch
was the birthplace of the movement in New Zealand.
The application to be certified has a rigorous structure so the
B Corp journey is at the leading edge of the sustainability
movement. Businesses can tell their stories about the good
they’re doing for the planet, but getting the B Corp stamp
of approval really puts those claims to the test. The ‘B’ let’s
customers instantly recognise they are buying from a brand
that is doing a business in a different way.
Early adopters leading
the B Corp movement
This growing Ōtautahi-based beauty and wellness brand
has generated more than $30m in online sales and earned
their B Corp certification last year.
The highest rated B Corp in New Zealand is in Christchurch.
A social enterprise providing commerical and financial
advice to social enterprises who use 100% of their profits to
support KidsCan in Ōtautahi and Habitat for Humanity, NZ.
Christchurch-based, this trusted brand is part of the
KMD Brands group who recently became one of the first
multinational companies to have all its brands – Kathmandu,
Rip Curl and Oboz – individually certified as B Corps.
Just 100 businesses are certified in
Aotearoa as of March 2023, with 16
of those in Christchurch.
What does B Corp mean for the wellbeing of Christchurch?
Christchurch City Council has set a target to halve Christchurch’s
emissions by 2030 and become carbon zero by 2045. B Corps
show the way forward for other businesses as they adapt to a
reduced carbon economy.
ChristchurchNZ is leading a piece of work on behalf of the city to
develop a long-term Economic Ambition for our city. A draft will
go out for consultation shortly, but in essence our proposed city
ambition is to move from an extractive to a regenerative economy.
Moving to a regenerative economy means shifting away from
market systems that rely on depleting our resources to generate
profit, towards an economy that unlocks the potential for
businesses to benefit people and the planet. This is strongly
aligned with the B Corp ethos.
Founded by an ex-accountant, an educator, a designer and
a developer in 2015 and now based in Christchurch, Banqer
builds financial life skills through an online platform to
create life-long impact for its users.
Another Christchurch beauty brand that is arguably the
most well-known local climate-focussed company. Ethique
only makes products that are plastic-free, cruelty free,
vegan and palm oil free, works directly with producers to
ensure fair pay and sustainable practices and donates
2% of sales to charity.
Are proud to be a B Corp certified company playing a
part in creating an inclusive and sustainable economy.
All Kiwibank actions, from sustainable lending to support
of financial education programmes, contribute to making
Kiwis better off.
Jeuneora COO
Colleen Itterman
and CEO & founder
Monique Kaminski at the
company’s distribution
centre in Christchurch.
Why?
Because we love our city, and we want our people to have it all.
Prosperity. Possibility. Purposeful careers. Equal opportunity.
Balanced places for people and nature.
Time and space for play.
This Christchurch B Corp Consultancy company practice
what they preach and became the third Ōtautahi business
to get certified back in 2016. To date, they have helped
more than 100 companies successfully navigate the B Corp
Impact Assessment.

Merivale home snapped up
THE FINDINGS of an
Former Selwyn mayor Bill
the company has
Christchurch’s housing and business development rules are changing
Ōtautahi Christchurch’s population is growing. Over the next 30 years, it’s predicted we’ll need more than 40,000
new houses to ensure everyone has a place to live, and Christchurch City Council is planning for that now.
Our growth challenge
We need to provide for the growth of housing and
business in the best locations in Christchurch, to
help address issues like climate change and housing
shortage. This means more houses where there’s good
access to shops, services, work, school, public transport
networks and infrastructure.
Where there’s good reason, we also need to ensure
development remains restricted or limited to protect
and maintain areas of value.
These changes won’t happen overnight. Over time the
look and feel of the city will change, and we want to plan
for that and keep what people value.
A new direction in urban planning
The planning rules have changed for New Zealand’s main urban areas. We need to
follow the new national direction to allow greater housing and business development
within Christchurch’s existing urban footprint.
There are new national standards for multi-unit housing developments called the
Medium-Density Residential Standards (MDRS). These aim to make it easier for denser
housing developments to happen. Once they come into effect, up to three dwellings
of up to three storeys can be developed on a property in Christchurch without needing
to apply for a resource consent, as long as all other rules have been met.
Not all parts of Christchurch are suitable for the MDRS, so we’re proposing special
rules, called Qualifying Matters, apply to recognise heritage and cultural features, to
protect major utility, infrastructure, and people in areas vulnerable to natural hazards,
among other things.
What we’re proposing
We’re proposing important changes to the city’s planning rulebook, the District Plan, via two plan changes – the Housing and Business Choice
Plan Change (Plan Change 14), and the Heritage Plan Change (Plan Change 13). Both plan changes were formally notified on 17 March 2023.
Replacing some existing residential zones in
the city with two new ones – a Medium-Density
Residential Zone and a High-Density Residential
Zone. The Medium-Density zone is the baseline for
increasing housing in our city. The High-Density
zone would allow apartment buildings and multistorey
flats in the central city.
Increased height limits for residential and
commercial buildings in and around the
central city, suburban centres and along public
transport routes, as well as enabling residential
development in some industrial areas around the
central city and larger suburban centres.
Special rules (Qualifying Matters) to limit greater
development of housing and business under
the MDRS, in order to better reflect our city’s
environment and climate. One proposes changing
recession planes to increase sunlight access from
what would be possible under the MDRS. This
applies citywide and means the MDRS won’t come
into effect for Christchurch until 2024, when Plan
Change 14 is decided on.
Heritage that should be protected, with a number
of new buildings, items and interiors added to
the Schedule of Significant Historic Heritage.
Have your say on our growing city
You can make a submission on the Housing and Business Choice Plan Change (Plan Change 14) and Heritage Plan
Change (Plan Change 13) until 3 May 2023. Detailed information about the plan changes and everything you
need to make your submission is available at ccc.govt.nz/growingcity

Stolen Lego kits may be sold online
• By Nathan Morton
A CHARITY is desperate to
recover about $15,000 in Lego
products stolen from one of its
parked vans.
The Imagination Station van
was broken into at the weekend
while in a Wilson car park on
Gloucester St overnight. It was
parked near Tūranga library,
where Imagination Station
operates.
Charity director Rachel
Westaway said it was clear the
theft was premeditated. She said
the front lock had been broken
and the thieves then smashed the
back window and took several
Lego kits.
The kits varied in value.
Westaway said the Lego
taken would fill seven six-litre
containers and some of the
stolen products were no longer
available on the market.
Lego Technic, EV3 and Spike
Prime were among the stolen
kits.
“There were specialised kits,
which cost around $250 each,
and some equipment isn’t made
by Lego any more, like the WeDo
kits. So we can’t replace them
like-for-like,” Westaway said.
“We’re putting an asset list
together of what was taken.”
Imagination Station has been
operating out of Tūranga for
the past three years. It was given
the Wilson spot by the car park
company as the charity was
having difficulty finding a park
near the library.
Imagination Station works
with children to provide
education and resources using
Lego technology at its play area
or after-school and holiday
classes.
One of its key values is
BREAK-IN: Imagination
Station operations manager
Anna Ross with the van
which was broken into
at a Wilson car park on
Gloucester St.
Left – The charity has been
operating out of Tūranga
for three years.
accessibility, which is why it
bought a charity van to transport
the Lego products to different
locations across the city.
“(It’s) for schools and places
where potentially some students
can’t afford to make it to the
library or where parking is an
issue,” said Westaway.
“So coming to them makes
it easier for them to use our
equipment.”
Police have been notified
of the theft. Westaway said it
was unfortunate there were no
CCTV cameras in the area.
“From our perspective, we had
great support from Wilson and
felt really safe there for the last
three years.
“So it’s unfortunate somebody
took it upon themselves to steal
from a charity.”
Westaway hopes somebody
will notice the Lego products
for sale. The rarity of certain
products should make it easy to
identify the stolen Lego if the
thieves try to sell them online.
“The suspicion is that they
were stolen for resale,” said
Westaway.
“There is the potential they’ll
try to sell in bulk, either through
Lego or other channels online,
so we want people to keep
an eye out and let us know if
they see anything suspicious –
particularly in terms of
volume.
“We just want to return it to
the community, no questions
asked.”
THE AID worker from
Christchurch killed volunteering
in war-torn Ukraine has had a
final scientific research paper
published posthumously, which
has been hailed a breakthrough
discovery in the field of DNA
research.
Dr Andrew Bagshaw, 47, was
killed alongside British volunteer
Christopher Parry, 28, while trying
to rescue an elderly woman
in an area of intense military
action in Soledar, when their car
was hit by an artillery shell in
January.
Now, just weeks after his
death, a new study the geneticist
led during his time as a researcher
within Otago University’s
Department of Anatomy has
been published in the prestigious
journal Nucleic Acids Research.
The study breaks new ground
in showing that DNA sequences
bend and twist in ways which
were previously unknown.
Bagshaw’s paper was supervised
by the Department
of Anatomy’s Professor Neil
Gemmell, who said the findings
are an important technical
discovery, spanning the fields
of genetics, biochemistry and
biophysics, with the potential to
benefit human health in future
years.
“Andrew’s remarkable work
could lead to a better understanding
of how genetic diseases
arise and how they can be
treated,” he said.
“It also opens up new avenues
for research into the mechanics of
DNA and could ultimately lead to
the development of new technologies
for manipulating DNA.”
He said the paper reflects
the work of someone who was
“exceptionally talented”, able to
synthesise a great deal of information
from subdisciplines and
disciplines that “don’t always
connect as directly as you might
imagine”, to address how DNA
bends and changes, in a new and
innovative way.
“Andrew possessed extremely
strong analytical skills and was
easily one of the most extraordinary
students I have trained,”
Gemmell said.
“This, his final body of work,
is a lasting legacy to a scientist of
immense promise and ability.”
Gemmell says Bagshaw’s work
reveals that DNA is bending in a
way nobody knew about before.
“This new insight is important
because DNA ‘secondary structures’
can affect how genes are
turned on and off, and the way
a DNA sequence is bent influences
its propensity to change or
‘mutate’.”
The paper reveals that DNA
sequences bend more in regions
that are rich in the nucleotides
cytosine and guanine, and bending
is particularly pronounced
at the start of a sequence, the
so-called 5’ end.
Bagshaw also observed where
sequences are predicted to bend
the most is where changes or
“mutations” in the DNA are
more likely to happen. The findings
help establish how DNA
functions, how it changes over
time, how it folds, and how it is
packaged into cells.
Bagshaw, whose death was
confirmed in late January, had
been working as a volunteer in
Ukraine since April last year.
He had completed a PhD in genetics
at Canterbury University
before joining Otago University
Christchurch’s Department of
Pathology and Biomedical Science
in 2008.
His parents Dame Sue and
Professor Phil Bagshaw said they
were “immensely proud” of their
son’s achievements.
But they have been left feeling
that his death is an enormous
loss to the scientific community.
“He was an outstandingly
intelligent fellow and his life was
cut short, which is sad,” said
Phil.
“He was a very gifted person,
very highly intelligent and
very committed to this area of
research.”
Peaceful message from the College
College Leaders Momo Seino (International Leader) and Isla
Kelliher (Mercy Ambassador) recently met with Imq Idris at
Masjeed An Nur to present the Islamic Community with a book of
peaceful messages that utilised different languages found within
the College. Each house incorporated another language into their
messages to provide An Nur with words of peace, hope and love.
Thank you very much Momo for organising and leading such a
beautiful expression of solidarity, faith and hope with our brothers
and sisters at Masjeed An Nur.
2023 Canterbury Polyfest
Villa Maria College students took part in the Canterbury Polyfest
recently. The event is a celebration of Pasifika culture and provides
an opportunity for secondary school students to showcase
traditional dance, music and customs.
Nia Fenika-Slater, Year 12, performed a traditional Taualuga, a
Samoan traditional
dance only performed
by the Taupou (Nia’s
role). The Taupou is a
very special role to be
given, and in this case
reflects Nia’s closeness
to her culture, positive
attitude and highperformance
ability.
Nia and her aunty,
brought Nia’s grandmother onto the stage in a wheelchair. This
represented the passing down of culture and honours those
important women in Nia’s life. Villa’s entire polyfest performance
showcased an acknowledgement of the relationships between the
students and key women in their lives.
Addison was selected for Under 15 Canterbury Futsal
Nationals, in the positions of target or flanker. In mid-
December, the team played two games a day in a four-day
tournament in Wellington. The final against Capital Wellington
ended with a 5-3 win to the Canterbury team, placing them at
the top of their game nationally. Congratulations to the team
and Go Addison!
Youth Commonwealth Games hopefuls
Congratulations
to Brooke Bennett
being named on the
Commonwealth Games
to be held in August in
We wish them all the
event. We are super
proud of you both!!
Perseverance reaps rewards
Challenging conditions did not deter the Villa Maria equestrian team in the
Inter-secondary School Show Jumping Competition, held at McLeans Island
recently. Despite the rain, the girls showed perseverance, each obtaining a
personal ‘win’. It was awesome to see Ruby and Chilli riding smoothly and
taking the jumps in their stride and getting a 6th in the two phase 105cm.
Congratulations too to Molly and Jimmy. Jimmy loves to jump and earned a
3rd in the 85cm ISO with a beautiful round. There was super work from Lilia
and Pumba. Pumba is developing a nice rhythm and building his confidence
in the ring. Thank you to the mums and dads who supported the girls in the
pouring rain; the sport wouldn’t happen without them.
Based on the popular comic strip, Annie tells the
extraordinary story of a little orphan who ends up in
the lap of luxury with Depression-era billionaire Oliver
Warbucks. Unlike most of the other children at Miss
Hannigan’s orphanage, spunky Annie believes that
her parents are still alive and will one day return to
claim her. So, when Mr. Warbucks offers to adopt her,
she asks the most powerful man in America to help
find her real mom and dad instead, and he agrees.
Warbucks’ whopping reward for Annie’s parents
attracts the attention of con artists Rooster, Lily and
the wicked Miss Hannigan, who hatch a plot to
kidnap Annie and take the $50,000 reward.
Will Annie ever find her parents? Maybe. Will Miss
Hannigan ever find a man and escape the clutches
of Little Girls? Will Rooster and Lily ever live on Easy
Street? Will President Roosevelt provide a ‘New Deal’
for the Hooverites? Will the orphans no longer live a
Hard-Knock life? Only one thing is for certain…
You can bet your bottom dollar that the sun will
come out tomorrow.
The group performed a Siva Samoa. The song was written by one
of the tutors, Seira Ale. Through the song lyrics the girls formally
introduced themselves and stated they were from Villa Maria
College.
Raquel Tikolevu, Year 8, dressed in the black, white and brown
costume, had a special role singing and leading the Fijian song
“Noqu Masu”. Earlier in the performance she was also brought out
by her mother when Noqu Masu was sung.
Well done to all our students who took part, delivering such
beautiful performances.
Crêpes et conversations
On Wednesday 15th February, our Senior French class went to
La Maison de Crêpe to bond over a French meal and conversation.
Students ordered their
meal in French and
talked about their meal
preferences with one
another. We celebrated an
early Mardi Gras in a relaxed
and warm atmosphere.
In the words of Dr Maria
Montessori “Education is
out by the child and is not
acquired by listening to
words but by experiences
IMPROVEMENTS to make
Canterbury Museum’s multimillion
are about to be installed.
The city council is making
alterations to the Rolleston Ave
accommodate containers and
fencing for the museum work.
“The changes are being
made to safely move people
through the area over the fiveyear
redevelopment period,”
city council transport operations
manager Stephen Wright
says.
A temporary two way
on-road cycleway from
the Antigua Boatsheds to
Salisbury St will be installed.
There will also be P3 school
pick-up and drop-off car
parks on Gloucester St, while
coach parking will move from
outside the Botanic Gardens.
Traffic calming will be
installed to help lower speeds
in locations where there are
lots of people travelling in
different ways.
on this busy shared path and
make it a safer and more
The Botanic Gardens gates
are moving in line with the
The work will be installed
under a traffic management
plan, however staff will present
a report to the city council
at an upcoming meeting for
formal approval.
“The use of temporary
materials means there will be
limited construction impacts,
and we can easily make
any tweaks to the layout if
something isn’t working well,”
Wright said.
The current entrance to the
Botanic Gardens adjacent
to the museum as well as
the pedestrian crossing at
Worcester Boulevard will also
be relocated to align with the
peacock fountain and the Arts
THE LARGEST, ugliest and most perfect
will be on show at Little River on Sunday.
It’s the township’s annual pumpkin
festival, a regular event for nearly 30 years
that focuses on the prize for the biggest
pumpkin – a record held by Mike Rask,
who produced a 250kg monster in 2019.
The first festival was in 1996.
Seedlings germinated in spring have
travelled from all over the country to be
carefully nurtured, fed and watered in an
attempt to win the ultimate “big boy” accolade,
said festival marketing leader Sandra
Tuckwell.
The big ones don’t taste too good, but
they pull in the crowds.
Pumpkins of all kinds can win prizes,
including the widest, smallest and best
dressed, Tuckwell said.
Thousands of visitors come from all
around the South Island to enjoy the event,
she said.
The festival also features music and
dance, country stalls, sideshows and the
famous Little River pumpkin soup.
The rules are simple: all pumpkins
entered must be pumpkins, no steroids can
be used, and any pumpkin weighing over
600kg must have its own truck.
The winning ‘big boy’ pumpkin will be
displayed outside the Little River Cafe for
the next three weeks.
Our New Home: The Campaign for Marian College launched
A campaign to raise $4 million
towards the new Marian
College on Lydia Street has been
launched.
The new school is expected to be
finished in September- 12 years
after students lost their school in
the Christchurch earthquake.
Our New Home – The
Campaign for Marian College
– is a community-based
fundraising campaign which
seeks to raise $4 million towards
the $50 million cost of the new
school.
The campaign has already raised
more than $1.2 million thanks
to donations from the Marian
Foundation and the Lottery Grants
Board.
Now the school
community and
general public have
the opportunity
to support the
school to reach its
$4 million target
by contributing
towards six projects within the new
school.
“Our ākonga, staff and whānau
are very excited and we appreciate
the support of our own past pupils
and families, and that of the wider
community,” Marian College Principal
Mary-Lou Davidson said.
Among the projects people can
donate to are: the Sports Precinct;
the Performing Arts facility; the Art,
Textiles and Technology Centre;
the Science Block; the Library, and
a whare which will be built at the
entrance of the school.
“Our New Home will be for
Marian College, our whānau
and will be shared with the
local and wider communities.
As a school, our students
will have excellent facilities
and in our tradition of
social justice, we will also be
able to share these with the
community.
“There are many opportunities
in this remarkable new
design for others to use,
such as meetings, functions,
performance spaces and
sporting facilities. We are fully
supportive of the campaign to
support the fundraising target
which will allow these facilities
for present and future use,”
Mary-Lou said.
Recently the Year 10s’ went to an Encounter day run by
the National Evangelisation Team (NET). The theme was
‘Brave’ with a focus on self-acceptance and self-worth.
Beth Andrew shares her experience:
“My biggest takeaway was from the video we watched
about Keala Settle (The Bearded lady from The Greatest
Showman). In the video, she was singing a song and had
zero confidence.
“As the song progressed she became more confident in
herself and by the end, she was putting her whole heart
into the song. It really made me think about how hard it
can be sometimes to have confidence in ourselves.
“My favourite part was when we made costumes out of
newspaper that an ideal woman would be stereotyped
to wear. On the costume, we had to write adjectives to
describe how a woman is perceived by society to be/act.
Some of the words that came up were that women have to
be ‘smart, pretty, thin, talented, multitaskers’ making us
aware of how society puts pressure on us as girls.
“We also learned about how God has us on Earth for
a reason and how everyone will end up in their unique
place at some point in their life. The day ended with Father
Edwin celebrating Mass with us.
Overall I really enjoyed the day and appreciated NET for
running such an organised fun day.”
Congratulations to…
LETTERS
Candy Corner’s detractors
(The Star, March 23) ought
consider the alternative – more
of the brown, black and white
pointed roof barracks, which
have sprung up like dull fungi
in all of our suburbs in recent
times. Realistically, there is no
third option in that price range.
As Brooksfield’s director
Vinny Holloway says, his
trade is changing the face of
Christchurch. We who live here
must like or lump it, as local and
central government has given the
proliferation carte blanche.
Brooksfield at least has listened
to our conversations about
aesthetics and the importance
of colour and greenery in a
future Christchurch. They’ve
acknowledged our concerns
about the rampant, dominant,
same-same, characterless,
featureless ugliness which will
be the legacy of the young and
ambitious developers, who will
never have to live in such a
home.
Eyes will not be offended when
we drive past Candy Corner
in 50 years’ time. It may be repainted
an overall classic colour,
and more trees can only improve
it. Brooksfield’s families will be
able to hold their heads high. I
wouldn’t want to be a descendent
of any of the others.
-June Peka
St Albans
Those apartments are just so
superior to many being erected
in our city, but Candy Corner is
not what I would have called it.
The article brought back so
many memories of times gone by.
Selwyn St was a hub of shops
of all descriptions and local
residents frequented them.
In 1952, our family moved
from Lismore (west of
Ashburton) to Simeon St,
Spreydon.
We unknowingly lived in
the cottage that was originally
owned by a Mr Simeon who
owned and farmed all the
surrounding land. Apparently he
migrated from England, caused
a flurry when he arrived with
his family entourage at Lyttelton
and then made his mark in
Christchurch.
But Candy Corner? Not what I
would have named it.
What will local government look like?
Environment
Canterbury
Deputy Chair Craig Pauling
IT’S EASY to be swayed by the
view that bigger is better, and that
larger organisations can use their
size to generate savings, create
efficiencies and reduce costs.
But being bigger doesn’t necessarily
mean a better outcome,
especially if you’re merging
organisations with very different
responsibilities, values and skill
sets – particularly where one of
those organisations is there to
regulate the other.
The role, function and performance
of local and regional
government is always topical
– for good reason. We collect
your money to deliver local and
regional services – which not
everyone sees as critical to them,
but we are required to do by law.
These matters have been magnified
recently by public debate
on Three Waters, as well as the
Government’s Future for Local
Government review, which could
have far-reaching consequences
for who does what, what gets
prioritised, and how everything
is funded.
Some have also suggested a
unitary authority for Greater
Christchurch, or a super-city
model – but what is this? Will it
be better than the status quo –
particularly when we consider
the challenges we face in relation
to climate change, water and
biodiversity degradation, as
well as upholding the Treaty of
Waitangi?
As the regional government,
Environment Canterbury manages
air quality, land and water
use, biodiversity and region-wide
planning. We’re also responsible
for public transport services
(bus and ferry networks), the
Harbourmaster’s Office, protection
from flooding and river
management, environmental
incident response and regional
Civil Defence Emergency Management.
This work is long-term,
geographically diverse, and focused
on ensuring the protection
of our unique natural resources.
Local councils manage things
like roading, building consents,
subdivision, land use and
development and community
facilities, including libraries.
REVIEW: The Future for Local Government review is
exploring all aspects of what local and regional councils do.
Like Three Waters, it could have far-reaching consequences.
They also manage supply of
drinking water and wastewater
services. This work is more
people-focused and provides the
facilities and services needed for
communities.
A unitary authority would
have all the responsibilities set
out above – and while this may
seem attractive – we should consider
what this may mean, what
could be lost and whether alternatives
may, in fact, be better.
For example, regional councils
currently administer consents
to local councils – providing an
important stewardship role as
well as providing clear separation
between the use and management
of our precious natural
resources.
Environment Canterbury
provides the regional perspective
and planning across Waitaha
Canterbury, assisting with collaboration,
alignment and benefits
– for example, regional land
transport, river and catchment
management, coastal marine
issues, and biodiversity and
biosecurity programmes where
city and district boundaries don’t
always take into account key
environmental factors.
Regional government has also
led the way in building stronger
and more meaningful relationships
with mana whenua, largely
due to the shared interests in
natural resource and environmental
management that iwi and
hapū hold along with the responsibilities
of regional councils.
These relationships are vital for
our future and will enable us to
confront the key environmental
challenges we face.
There will be change, that’s for
certain. The review is exploring
all aspects of what local and
regional councils do, including
funding, how we give effect to
te Tiriti o Waitangi areas of responsibility,
and involvement of
the community in decisions.
It’s important there is full understanding
of exactly what any
new form and function for local
government actually means. Ultimately,
it must deliver a healthy
and thriving environment and
one where Waitaha Canterbury
remains a fantastic place to live,
work and enjoy.
We need to ensure we design
a system that our grandchildren
will thank us for, one that is able
to confront the key challenges we
are facing. This is what Environment
Canterbury is committed
to and we look forward to working
with our communities, Ngāi
Tahu, central government and all
our local councils to achieve.
GARDENING
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
It’s time to get silverbeet planted
As autumn intensifies,
it’s time to get planting
hardy greens – as well
as colourful bulbs
Vegetables
Cabbage, cauliflower and
silverbeet stalks should be
cleared from the ground once
the plants have been harvested.
Left in, they will deplete the
soil and, more seriously, make
excellent shelter for insect pests
such as grey aphids.
Spinach, lettuce and turnips
can still be sown – the latter in a
warm, sheltered place.
Onions need to be lifted soon.
If the foliage is still growing,
bend over the tops to hasten bulb
maturity. If onions are already
being used, dig those with thick,
soft stems first, as they will not
keep well.
Cabbage, cauliflower and leek
crops need to be kept cultivated
and weed-free. Control moth
and caterpillar attacks with
derris dust. A pesticide spray
may be needed to combat grey
aphid infestations.
Parsley can still be sown. The
hardy herb will stand the winter
without harm, but seed can be
slow to germinate. Soaking in
water overnight can help, but
more important is using fresh
seed to ensure good germination.
Young parsley plants respond to
good soil and an abundance of
nitrogen.
Silverbeet grows well in cool
conditions and, in most areas,
a late-March sowing still gives
enough time for plants to
become established before cold
weather stops growth.
Mixing lime (280g per sq m)
and a similar quantity of blood
and bone will help the crop.
Alternatively, apply a good
general fertiliser.
Sow silverbeet seed 1cm deep
in rows 0.5m apart. Water the
ground well if conditions are dry.
Being coastal in origin,
silverbeet also responds to
some salt in the soil. Place some
seaweed 30cm below where the
seeds are to be sown, cover with
NUTRITIOUS: A late March sowing still gives silverbeet plants time to become established
before winter.
soil, then put in the seeds. This
leafy vegetable also responds
to a plentiful supply of organic
material.
Flowers
Carnation layers pegged
down in late January should be
ready for separating from the
old plants. Scrape a little of the
soil away and see how rooting is
proceeding.
Carnation blooms can be
improved if manure is added,
30cm or more below the surface,
and carnations also like plenty
of lime and bone meal added
to the soil. If it is light and
sandy, improve it by mixing
in rotted turf, straw or garden
compost.
When planting rooted
carnation layers, set 40cm apart
and try not to disturb the ball
of young roots. Do not plant
too deeply. The upper roots
should be just below the
surface.
Lilies can be planted in rich,
well-drained, lime-free soil,
giving the bulbs a chance to
settle down before winter.
Lilium regale is popular in home
gardens, being easy to grow and
less sensitive to soils containing
lime.
Most tolerant of lime is the
Madonna (Lilium candidum).
The other main difference is
that Madonna lilies, which have
no dormant period, should be
planted in a hot, dry spot with
a-third of the bulb above the
soil.
Other lilies need plenty of leaf
mould or peat to maintain the
acidity in which they thrive.
Most lilies like to have shade
over their roots and look good
beside azaleas, rhododendrons
and kalmias.
In heavy soils, drainage can be
improved by sitting the bulb on a
layer of river sand.
Stem-rooting lilies should be
planted 8cm-10cm deep, basalrooting
15cm or more deep.
Fruit
Loganberries, boysenberries,
tayberries and cultivated
blackberries need to be pruned
after fruiting.
Cut from the base of the plant
all canes which have fruited and
train young canes in their place.
If there are not enough of those
to replace the fruit-bearing ones,
the plant has been starved.
Mulch with stable manure or
garden compost, at least half a
metre out, around all sides of the
stems.
Raspberry bushes can be
cleaned up by tying the canes
into place, removing all weeds
and any suckers that have
appeared.
Leave seven or eight newlygrown
canes to each plant and
remove old ones which bore fruit
this season.
A mulch of half-rotted manure
or compost will help the plants
develop.
– ODT
READY: Raspberry canes
can be tied into place, while
lilies can be planted in rich,
well-drained soil.
Counting down the highlights
of the premier grade season
Club cricket finished up
over the weekend after
six months of hopping
between three formats.
Jaime Cunningham
looks at some of the
highlights in the men’s
and women’s premier
grades by the numbers
535: The number of runs
scored in the one-day format by
BJ Jacobs. The batting records
over the past season have been
dominated by Jacobs, who plays
for Sydenham’s men’s premier
side. He scored 535 from eight
one-day innings throughout the
season, breaking Scott Pawson’s
long-standing record of 475
in the 2000/01 season. Jacobs
scored three hundreds and now
holds the record for the highest
score in a Christchurch premier
one-day match after his 178
against Old Boys Collegians.
Jacobs also hit the most
boundaries, with 112 fours and
54 sixes.
371: The largest team total
of the season, which was set by
Burnside West. In this year’s
two-day competition, scores
over 300 were vast. But Burnside
West’s 371 was the highest total
in any format and they got their
in just 51.4 overs at a run rate of
7.2. Matthew Hay, Scott Janett,
and David Zohrab dominated
Riccarton with strike rates of
more than 100 in the innings.
However, it was vice-captain
Carl Huyser who blitzed the
Riccarton bowlers to take
Burnside West’s score well and
truly over 350. Huyser finished
on 60 from 24 with a strike rate
of 250.
2: The amount of titles won
by the Sydenham premier
women and OBC men this
season. OBC were dominant
in the white ball formats of the
men’s premiership. In December,
UNSTOPPABLE: BJ Jacobs scored 535 runs in eight
one-day innings for Sydenham, breaking Scott Pawson’s
record of 475 set in 2000/01. Below – Old Boys’ Collegians
captain Jack Lewis holding the one-day trophy which the
team won last month.
they won the T20 competition,
beating Sydenham in the final
with a strong bowling display
led by former Black Cap Todd
Astle who took 3/25. OBC then
took down unbeaten Burnside
West in the one-day format in
February. Sydenham’s premier
women team made all three
finals this season, winning two
of them. A team bowling effort
helped them claim the T20
TITLE: Sydenham’s premier women’s side celebrate after
winning the T20 competition last month.
title against Lancaster Park in
February. Lancaster Park only
managed 56 runs in the final,
which proved to be an easy chase
for Sydenham. At the weekend,
Sydenham claimed the Four20
Fizz competition, even though
the match was abandoned.
40: The lowest score
recorded in the men’s and
women’s premier grades went
to North West when Lancaster
Park bowled them out. When
Lancaster Park’s full bowling
stocks were available this
season, they were unstoppable.
In December, Canterbury
Magicians leg-spinner Sarah
Asmussen (4/5) and all-rounder
Jacinta Savage (3/5) ran through
North West’s batting line-up in
a one-day match, assisted by Jess
Simmons (1/9), Katie Midwood
(1/7) and a Kate Anderson
run-out. Lancaster Park won
by a mammoth 205 runs, after
a strong batting display saw
them finish on 249/6. Former
White Ferns spin bowler Frankie
McKay top-scored in the match
with 77 before she retired hurt.
109 (n/o): OBC captain
Jack Lewis’ score in the men’s
one-day final. With OBC 7/3
chasing 219 in the final in
February, Burnside West looked
like they would easily continue
their two-year unbeaten streak.
However, Lewis quite literally led
his team to their second title of
the season. He smashed 10 fours
and three sixes to finish on 109
not out. He also hit the winning
runs to claim the team’s second
title. The innings was Lewis’
maiden century at premier level.
It was also his first season as
captain.
307: The number of
wickets taken in the 23-game
women’s one-day competition.
The bowling calibre of women’s
cricket in Christchurch is no
doubt the talking point of the
premier grade. Across 12 rounds
of the one-day format, 307
wickets were taken. This works
out to be at an average of 13.3
wickets a game. Of the 46 oneday
innings played, 20 of them
saw a team bowled out.
8/20: The best bowling
figures out of all three formats
played by the premier men’s
team. Heathcote’s Tyler Lortan
swept through Riccarton in
a two-day match earlier this
month to finish with the best
bowling figures of the three
competitions this season. He
took the eight wickets in just 7.3
overs and bowled one maiden.
Lortan’s heroics prevented
Thomas Walshe and Morgan
Topping reaching three-figures
in Riccarton’s second innings at
Riccarton Domain. Heathcote
went on to win the match.
After five comfortable wins and
lots of goals over the weekend,
the Southern League will likely
see some closer matches when the
second round gets under way this
weekend.
Newcomers to the league FC
Twenty 11 will be in search
of their first win in the competition
when they travel to
Dunedin to play Green Island
on Saturday. Both teams lost in
the first round, with Cashmere
Technical dominating FC Twenty
11 6-0.
Cashmere head coach Dan
Schwarz
said he was
happy
with
how
clinical
his team were against the newest
addition to the league.
“It’s always difficult coming
from preseason, and we didn’t
know too much about FC but we
definitely showed our class on the
day,” he said.
Last year’s golden boot winner
Garbhan Coughlan (right) netted
four goals for Cashmere, two of
them within three minutes in the
second half.
Declan Tyndall and promising
young striker, Zander Edwards
also scored for Cashmere. They
will travel to Nelson to take on
Nelson Suburbs – who finished
third last year – on Sunday.
“Nelson’s always a difficult
one,” Schwarz said.
“The pitch is always heavy
to play on, especially after the
weather we’ve had this week. Nelson
also have a very good squad
at home, and it’s usually a tight
battle with them.”
Selwyn United will host
Dunedin City Royals at Foster
Park on Saturday. Both teams
recorded large wins
over Nelson
Suburbs
and Nomads at the weekend.
Former Coastal player, Liam
Coleman scored the first goal
for Selwyn, with Scott Mc-
Kay picking up another
later in the first half.
Jamie Carrodus
and Darius van
Wyk added
more goals
to give
the home
team a
4-1 win.
Nomads will take on Ferrymead
Bays at home on Saturday following
their 3-0 loss to Dunedin City
Royals. Ferrymead beat the Tulett
Park-based team in their two
encounters last season and will
be confident of making it three
in a row against Nomads after
last weekend’s 3-0 win against
Coastal Spirit.
New-look
premiership
down to
six teams
• By Will Evans
THE CLUB rugby league
competition enters its second
round on Saturday with major
changes to how it operates.
The premiership has six teams
this season, Linwood Keas,
Hornby Panthers, Eastern Eagles,
Halswell Hornets, Northern
Bulldogs and Riccarton Knights,
after the Papanui Tigers and
Celebration Lions couldn’t field
premier teams.
The clubs will face each other
three times across 15 rounds.
Triple round-robin play finishes
on July 22.
Said Canterbury Rugby
League chief executive Malcolm
Humm: “Four Massetti Cup
rounds in May and June will
feature a Friday night match
under lights at Ngā Puna Wai.
On Saturday, June 24, Ngā Puna
Wai will host its inaugural ‘magic
round’, with all three premiership
encounters to be played
simultaneously on the venue’s
three rugby league fields.”
The six clubs fielding a premier
grade team have entered a side
in the ISC Canterbury Cup
(premier reserves), joined by
Papanui Tigers, Ashburton
Barbarians, Shirley Hawks,
Burnham Chevaliers and
Greymouth Greyhounds in
what will initially be an 11-team
competition. After one full
round-robin, the top six teams
will remain in the Canterbury
Cup for the remainder of the
season and the bottom five will
recreate the third-tier division
one, which returns for the first
time since 2019. All teams retain
their points from the original
round-robin and, following the
split, will play each team in their
respective grade again.
“In what promise to be among
the most absorbing club matches
of the season, two promotionrelegation
fixtures are scheduled
for August 5 (provided the teams
from the lower grade accept the
challenge),” said Humm.
“The sixth-placed Massetti
Cup team at the end of the homeand-away
rounds will face an
invitational non-premier team
with a place in the 2024 men’s
premiership on the line, while the
sixth-placed Premier Reserves
team will play the top-placed
division one side for a spot in the
2024 ISC Canterbury Cup.”
The women’s premiership
starts on April 16, featuring
THE PREMIER men’s tennis
interclub final will be played
on Saturday after rain delayed
the season decider between
Elmwood and Cashmere last
weekend.
The decision to postpone the
final was made around 3pm
last Saturday after rain twice
thwarted players’ attempts to
start the tie.
The starting time this weekend
has been brought forward to
the morning due to Cashmere’s
centenary celebrations at its club
on Saturday afternoon.
Tennis Canterbury general
manager Bevan Johns said
the final will be played
at the Elmwood courts,
however the Wilding
Park indoor centre will be
available in the case of bad
weather. The competition
must finish this weekend,
he said.
Elmwood is looking to
defend its title after last
year’s win, however there is
a lot at stake for Cashmere.
Men’s final to go ahead regardless of weather
“This final is special for us. It
is Cashmere’s centenary and that
is an extra incentive for us to
win. Everyone is quite
motivated,” Cashmere
captain Tim Meredith
said.
It will be a family
affair for the two
teams. Cashmere has
the three Meredith
brothers Matt, Tim
Tim
Meredith
and James, while
Elmwood has the
Darling brothers,
Elliot and Lawrence,
and the Batt brothers, Tom and
Eddie.
James Meredith is likely
to play in the top slot for
Cashmere supported by
brothers, Tim and Matt, and
Harry Weeds.
The other two team members
Liam Barrett and Lucas Evans
will be coming off a busy week
of tennis, having played for
Christ’s College in the national
secondary schools’ tennis
championships at Wilding
Park.
“Liam and Lucas have played
a really high standard of tennis
this season,” Tim Meredith said.
Elmwood has a pool of very
strong players to draw on. All
are highly ranked, in-form and
available every week.
It is expected to field the same
players as in the semi-finals –
the Batt and Darling brothers
for the singles and possibly Mid
Canterbury coach Jack Tiller,
bringing in the experienced
James Spence in the doubles.
Te Kura Hagley won the
women’s final earlier this
month.
Fuel-friendly and clean Skoda Kamiq
I’m of the firm opinion that
development of the internal
combustion engine is far from
over, especially in terms of fuel
efficiencies.
Sure, the world is viewing
electric vehicles as the way forward
to combat climate change and our
reliance on fossil fuel, but there
are many petrol engines in today’s
market that run on the smell of
an oily rag and are clean to the
environment.
One such engine is Skoda’s 1-litre
turbocharged three-cylinder unit
that is rated with a 5.8l/100km
combined cycle average and emits
just 131g/km of CO2. As such,
it qualifies for a New Zealand
Government Clear Car Program
rebate of $1870. If you take that
amount off the purchase price –
$38,990 – you are getting a quality
car and one that won’t bite you
much in the way of day-to-day
running costs.
Of course, this engine comes
courtesy of Skoda’s incorporation
into the Volkswagen Group, and it
is one of many fuel-friendly units
that are constantly being placed in
production. I see it as an alternative
to electric power and, what’s more,
it is very traditional in the way
it operates and very much suits
its placement in Skoda’s Kamiq
Scoutline.
The Kamiq’s body shape puts the
vehicle most definitely in the SUV
category, but I’d label it more of a
crossover vehicle. That’s because
it is just a two-wheel-drive (front)
model only, and although the
suspension is raised to give it more
wheel travel and freedom it can’t be
described as anything other than
an all-road vehicle.
The Kamiq is not new to the New
Zealand market, but it has just had
a major refresh with distinctive
styling cues giving it a bolder but
fresh appearance.
Major specification items include
push-button ignition, cruise
control, touch screen display and
safety systems which count towards
a five-star Euro NCAP rating.
What I like about the Kamiq is
its practicality. It is a compact car
at just 4.24m, but it has good space
inside and great load space. Skoda
claims a cargo carrying area of
400-litres extending to 1395-litres
with the rear seats folded down.
At the other end sits the wee
gem of an engine. Developing
85kW and 200Nm, it has healthy
outputs for its 999 cubic capacity.
The turbo isn’t overly boosted so
there is no great rush of power,
but it does have a solid flow of
energy right through the power
band. That’s attributable to where
the power outputs are developed,
CROSSOVER: The Skoda Kamiq is a blend between a
traditional hatchback and a sport utility vehicle.
SKODA KAMIQ SCOUTLINE: Earn a $1870 rebate as part of the Clear Car Programme.
peak power is available from just
5000rpm, while maximum torque
spreads from 2000 to 3500rpm.
These figures result in low down
energy, and that is what you want
in an engine, it churns away with a
characteristic three-cylinder growl,
it is well muffled but there’s no
denying the harmonics associated
with this design.
Drive is channelled through a
seven-speed direct shift gearbox,
this is the Volkswagen group’s
preferred choice of transmission
and it stands out for quick, clean
and smooth shifts.
In terms of acceleration, it will
lunge through a highway overtake
(80 to 120km/h) in 7sec, while
Skoda claims a 9.9sec run from a
standstill to 100km/h, and a top
speed of 191km/h. All of these
figures are remarkable for an
engine that is just under 1-litre.
I took the evaluation car on a
long highway loop taking in the
high country roads and home
through Burnham and Lincoln.
When presented with a handling
challenge the Kamiq steers with
accuracy and there is good
feedback through the steering
wheel.
The Scoutline model has fuel
efficient Good Year tyres (205/55)
sitting on 17in wheels, but there
• Price – Skoda Kamiq
Scoutline, $38,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4241mm; width,
1988mm; height,
1453mm
• Configuration – Threecylinder,
front-wheeldrive,
999cc, 85kW,
200Nm, seven-speed
automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 9.9secc
• Fuel usage –5.8l/100km
is solid grip to be found, and even
with the limitation of tube beam
rear axle, suspension movement is
flexible and the spring and damper
rates are just firmed enough to
contain any gravitational force of
the body over the suspension.
More importantly, ride comfort
in relation to quick cornering isn’t
compromised, the suspension
settings make for an almost perfect
balance, and that’s important on
Christchurch’s mixture of road
surfaces, bumps and ruts are
absorbed beautifully without any
in-cabin shock.
During my time in the
Scoutline the fuel usage readout
was constantly showing around
6.6l/100km with an amazing
4.8l/100km usage at 100km/h,
the engine working over slowly at
just 2250rpm – right in the area of
maximum torque.
I’ve long been a fan of threecylinder
engines, and the Kamiq
in this form really appealed to me.
However, I do realise that some of
the harmonics and driving feel may
not appeal to everyone. That being
the case, there is a four-cylinder
offering in the form of the Kamiq
Monte Carlo, the 1.5-litre unit adds
an extra $9k but it also reaps the
rewards of its efficiency and it is
eligible for an extra $100 from the
Government, its clean car rebate
amounts to $1970.
I’ve experienced this engine
previously and can also report it is
a cracker with its 5.7l/100km fuel
usage average and healthy power
outputs (110kW and 250Nm).
Skoda is also entering the
electric vehicle market with its
Enyaq SUV due to land in New
Zealand soon, but with a foot
in each camp it’s fair to say the
company still sees a future with
internal combustion engines,
and I’ll go as far as to say you can
expect plenty more to arrive that
are as equally or more efficient in
the years to come.
ADD SOME
COLOUR
TO YOUR ADVERT!
You are in the market for a new property.
You may have visited show homes
and open homes becoming confused,
overwhelmed or swept away with
emotional factors like having everything
new, or extra features such as three car
garaging.
To be happy with your choice, list the
features that you need, considering:
; Family space – Is there room for
the children to play indoors and
for television and entertainment
units? Should this be open plan or
separated?
; Kitchen – What needs to be in your
kitchen? Is it a whim or something that
offers a practical solution to the way
you use your kitchen?
; Bedroom sizes – What are optimum
sizes? Smaller bedrooms may
translate to slightly lower building
costs while extra space can be useful.
; Garaging – A standard double garage
once two cars are parked there offers
little space for the toys. What toys
throughout do you have Christchurch
and could they live with
the lawnmower in a garden shed, a
cheaper option to three car garaging?
Looking for a Property?
What really counts
; Size of land – Lifestyle properties
offer space for children, pets, hobbies,
an expansive garden and perhaps a
home-run business but they require
work so are not for everyone and
a compact section might be more
sensible if a tight budget or busy
lifestyle.
; Bathrooms – Second bathrooms are
great in homes with teenagers and a
wet shower room is ideal for young
children. A bath might be fashionable
though is often not used and its
absence could mean a more spacious
bathroom.
; Laundry – Would a laundry in the
garage do the job?
; Storage – How much storage do you
need? Weigh up what can truly be
stored in the garage once vehicles
are in, a preference in winter. Garages
vary in size so check the size to ensure
your vehicles will fit. Look also at
where else the house offers storage
capacity such as in hall cupboards,
a large hot water cylinder cupboard,
wardrobes, walk-in robe, attic storage
trusses, as well as the potential for
hooks and shelving in the garage for
bikes, tools, garden equipment and
even kayaks.
; Off-street parking – How many
vehicles can be parked on the
driveway? Will this space be sufficient?
; Garden - Is there sufficient space
for your children to play or for
entertaining?
