Smash-and-grab teens
plough into teacher’s car
Preschool
mums
will help
pay for
damage
• By Daniel Alvey
MUMS FROM a preschool have
banded together to help pay for
damage done to a teacher’s car
after it was hit by teenagers in a
stolen vehicle.
The Huntsbury Preschool
teacher’s car, parked on
Huntsbury Ave, was hit on
Monday morning after an
attempt by the teenagers to flee
police failed.
The five teenagers were
fleeing from police after they
had smashed the front doors
and window of Noel Leeming
on Langdons Rd, Papanui, at
about 4.40am, where they were
seen running into the store
holding pillowcases.
Police were informed of the
suspected stolen vehicle in
the Huntsbury Ave area about
7.45am on Monday.
FLEEING TEENS: Police at the Huntsbury Ave scene on Monday morning.
When police responded, the
occupants of the vehicle tried to
flee, damaging a police vehicle
and the teacher’s vehicle in the
process.
In a Facebook post, a group
of mums from the preschool
said they would help pay for the
insurance excess.
A Huntsbury resident posted
on Facebook on Monday he saw
up to seven police cars
at the scene and was told by
police that one of the teenagers
was 13.
Police said of the five people
taken into custody a 15-yearold
male was due to appear
in the Youth Court on Tuesday
on a number of related
charges. A 15-year-old female
Canty marching team
displays winning style
The Pioneers of Canterbury
Masters team marched their
way to success at the recent NZ
Marching Championships, hosted
by Marching Canterbury and
held at Christchurch Arena.
Smartly turned out in their
crisp white jackets and blue and
white tartan skirts, the 21-member
team took first place in the
display phase and were third
champion team overall.
Sirita Prior, who co-coaches the team
with Noeline Kitto, says it was the closest
result for champion team in five years,
and “a very interesting competition with
just 30 points between the first and third
placegetters”.
They were also the third-placed technical
drill team.
For their winning display march, the
team received a trophy, with members
also awarded badges and bars to place on
their jackets.
Eight teams from around New Zealand
competed in the Masters division, four of
them from Canterbury.
The Pioneers of Canterbury Masters
have enough members for two technical
drill teams, and the second team, Pioneers
of Canterbury Force, placed fifth in
the technical drill phase.
“It’s been said by some that you can’t
coach two teams successfully, but we’ve
proved them wrong. It’s also how you
advertising
Pioneers of Canterbury marching team and coaches Sirita Prior, left
and Noeline Kitto, with their trophy front and centre.
measure success which defines the season
– awards aren’t what we prioritise but we
appreciate them when they are received,”
Sirita says.
“We train both teams together as one
team and they both receive the same
attention.”
Prior to the championships, the
Pioneers of Canterbury were invited to
showcase their display and technical
marches at the Drill Dance Australia and
Marching NZ Tattoo being held on the
Gold Coast in July.
“We asked the girls if they wanted to go
and not one of them said ‘no’,” Sirita says.
“They will have four weeks off from
training before we prepare for Australia
and then when we return we will be creating
a whole new display and learning a
new technical drill for next season, which
starts in October,” Sirita says.
The 2024 NZ Marching Championships
will be held in Hamilton next March,
hosted by Marching Waikato.

Professor gives back to old school
• By Darryl Baser
A FORMER Linwood High
School head boy has donated
a collection of history books
he has worked on and two
artworks to Te Aratai College.
Professor Geoff Rice was
at Linwood High in 1964
before the school was renamed
Linwood College then Te Aratai
College last year.
Rice received a New Zealand
Order of Merit in 2021 for
services to historical research
and education.
His first book, Black
November, on the 1918
influenza pandemic in New
Zealand was used by the
Ministry of Health in its
pandemic action plan released
in response to the 2006 bird flu
pandemic.
Rice said it felt like the right
time to give something back to
his old school.
“My grandson started
there this year, it made me
think: ‘Perhaps it is time I did
something for the school’.”
Sixteen of the books
donated were written by Rice,
including Black November.
He also had three gifts for the
school.
“I also donated a little
Oamaru stone sculpture of a
half opened door to symbolise
the door of a library always
being open.”
GIFTED: Professor Geoff Rice with Te Aratai College year 13 student Jason Prakash,
Dormay Laufiso from year 12, and Thomas Rhodes from year 13. Right – Rice was
Linwood High School head boy in 1964.
nearly didn’t become the history
expert he is now. In his last year
of high school, Rice said he was
“dead keen on becoming an
artist and teaching art.”
“I actually sat the fine arts
prelim in my last year at
school and passed it, but my
headmaster and Jim Ormond,
the deputy principal, took me
aside one day.
“Jim said to me: ‘Your artistic
talent will be with you the rest
of your life but [history] is the
best way to get a degree’,” he
said.
Rice also gifted a painting
which references a mural he
oN sAle Now!
created as a student in 1963 in
the library. The painting was
destroyed along with the library
and staff room in a fire at the
school 1975.
He said he was also motivated
to give back to the school which
set him up for life.
“I had a very good grounding
at Linwood High School as it
was then. We had really keen
young staff fresh out of teachers’
college and I got a very good
education at Linwood.”
Te Aratai College principal
Richard Edmundson said the
gifts will remind the students of
the school’s rich past.
example of community, of
people valuing their own
said.
“Our school, the rebuild, is a
continue to have easy access to
postal and bill paying services.
An agreement has been reached,
and the Linwood Service Centre is
now a full agent for NZ Post.
“We hear and understand that
the Linwood community value
convenient access to PostPlus
Year 7 Camp
Our Year 7 pupils have recently
attended a camp at Purau Bay.
This is a great way for the children
to get to know each other.
Back row (from left): Clara, Alex, Amilee, Annabel
Front Row (from left): CJ, Nika, Liam, Oscar
My favourite
part of camp was the
abseiling because it was
fun, challenging, and a new
experience. It was great to watch
everyone do it. I learnt that there
were lots of different types of crabs
on the beach. I also learnt that
when you are abseiling you
never put your feet close
together.
My favourite
part of the camp
was doing the activities
and feeding the eels and
goats. We enjoyed the free
time on the beach, the water
was crystal clear. The
abseiling was amazing;
you feel like you can
fly.
House Captains for Mansfield/Hillary
CJ - ex Ararira Springs Primary
I love the teachers at Kirkwood and I find the school culture is so down
to earth and is super motivational. I like the discipline and strict rules the
teachers lay out. I want to make a positive influence on the students during
their time at Kirkwood and I want to make the environment a better place.
I wanted to be a House Captain because I wanted to be a great leader for
this school.
Clara - ex Lincoln Primary
I like the opportunities and learning environment. Also, the people from
different backgrounds and the staff at Kirkwood are all lovely to talk to.This
year, I would like to encourage more students to try new things. I want to
help fundraise to help our school and I would like to help more students
respect, encourage, and help others. I wanted to be a House Captain
so I could help others, learn leadership skills, and have an influence with
decisions made at school.
House Captains for Sheppard/Freyberg
Liam - ex Knights Stream School
I like Kirkwood for the many opportunities which are offered, especially
leadership opportunities. I will encourage people to try new things which are
outside of their comfort zone. I wanted to become a House Captain because
I would like to get more involved with the school and learn leadership skills.
Amilee - ex Prebbleton
At Kirkwood, I like all the sports and activities made available to us. I would
love to get in a netball, touch and korfball team and will encourage others to
try sports too. I was always wanting to be House Captain at Kirkwood so I
can develop leadership skills.
House Captains for Britten/Te Kanawa
Oscar - ex Ilam School
I really like the Technology classes and Physical Education. My favourite
subject is writing. I wanted to be a House Captain so I can show I am
responsible and really trustworthy to others.
Annabel - ex Halswell School
I enjoy the Technology classes, all the sports available at Kirkwood, and the
many different opportunities offered at Kirkwood. I will get everyone to enjoy
sports days and encourage people to earn House Points. I wanted to be a
House Captain because it sounds like a good leadership role.
House Captains for Rutherford/Batten
Alex - ex Ararira Springs Primary
I love Kirkwood because there are always new things to do and learn. It is
awesome to be around a lot of people my age, and to learn and grow from
them. There are also heaps of cool opportunities, whether they are sporting,
academic or leadership. This year I would like to encourage everyone to be
their best self and make the most of every opportunity. Last year, our class
studied who our houses are named after, this inspired me and made me
want to become a leader.
Nika - ex Beckenham School
I love Kirkwood so much as I feel like I can do anything. All the teachers
and children support me in everything I do. I want to encourage learning and
interacting with others. I wanted to be a House Captain so I can show people
like me that they can do anything they want if they put their mind to it.
I enjoyed all of
the camp, especially
abseiling, canoeing, the farm
tour and feeding the eels. We learnt
how to abseil and how to play Kick the
Can. I learnt that Ripapa Island existed,
and I learnt the island's past uses and
history. I also learnt a lot more about
the Māori history in and around
Ripapa. We went on a farm tour
and enjoyed seeing all the
farm animals.
My favourite
part was abseiling
down the cliff. My other
favourite part was canoeing
in the ocean. I learnt that goats
will eat absolutely anything if
you let them. I also learnt how
to put a tent up and down
and that chickens and
goats like bread.
Sumner avoid relegation –
but no milestone for Vann
• By Jaime Cunningham
SUMNER’S championship
grade cricket team have
escaped relegation over the
weekend, at the cost of a major
Dan Vann milestone.
Going into the last day
of the two-day match on
Saturday, Sumner needed to
bat for majority of the day
for a win or draw against
Lancaster Park to avoid
dropping to the division 1
grade next season.
Sumner finished on 219/5
for a draw, led by a century
from captain Boston Fielding
(112 not out from 160 balls)
and Brett Taylor’s 58.
Although the team avoided
relegation, batting for the
full day prevented Dan Vann
from gaining the three more
wickets he needed to reach a
500 wicket milestone for the
club.
“In terms of not bowling,
I wasn’t too fussed. I’d much
rather see the team do well,”
Vann said.
In October, the 39-year-old
became the second Sumner
player to bring up 400
appearances for the side, and
is the highest wicket taker for
the club with 497.
Dan Vann
Vann will make fewer
apperances for Sumner
next season, as running his
coaching business, teaching
part-time at Chisnallwood
Intermediate and playing has
become too much to balance.
“It would of been nice to get
to that milestone this season
but I am sure I will play a few
games next season, I just won’t
be as committed in terms of
playing every week,” Vann
said.
Vann said Saturday’s
result was big for Sumner, as
fielding a championship side
ensures the club is playing at a
competitive standard.
“It’s a grade that players
want to play so it makes it
easier to recruit players. We
have been battling a bit for
numbers this season so we
will be need to recruit well
over the off season,” he said.
Sumner’s prizegiving also
took place on Saturday, with
Fielding taking out the major
awards, including best allrounder,
most runs for his
team and club, and the sports
award for most points through
catches, runs, wickets and run
outs.
Nawid Mohammady was
awarded the most improved
player for Sumner and his
championship side, alongside
the award for the most
wickets.
Scorecard:
Sumner 168/10,
Bibin Babu 41,
Nathan Wingham
3/23 and 219/5,
Boston Fielding
112 not out, Brett
Taylor 58, drew
with Lancaster
Park 105/10, Nick
Cooke 25, Nawid
Mohammady, 4/38.
RESULT: Boston Fielding’s
century on Saturday
ensured Sumner stay in the
championship grade next
season, finishing on 112 not
out. However, Dan Vann did
not take the three wickets he
needed to reach 500.
No eggs? No problem, simply substitute
Swapping in one
ingredient for
another can not only
save your cake mixture,
it can also reduce
waste, write the good
folk at Love Food Hate
Waste
WE LOVE using bananas and
apples in creative ways,
but did you
know they
can also
be used
as baking
substitutes
in place of
eggs, butter,
and yoghurt?
This is especially
handy if you often
find partly eaten apples
coming home inside lunch
boxes. Chop them up and place
in freezer bags until you have
enough, then cook them up to
make apple sauce. Stored in a
container, it will last up to three
days in the fridge or longer in
the freezer.
Use ¼ cup as a substitute for
1 egg, or ½ cup of apple sauce
instead of 1 cup of butter, and
swap equal amounts for yoghurt.
If it’s brown bananas you’re
dealing with, half a large banana
can be used instead of 1 egg,
or 1 cup of mashed banana
substituted for 1 cup of butter
or yoghurt. Note that using
ingredient substitutes may affect
the texture and flavour.
Here are more ideas for egg,
butter, and yoghurt substitutes:
What can I use instead of
eggs?
• To replace
one
egg, you can
use:
• Mayonnaise
(left)
– use 2 or 3
tablespoons.
• 1 teaspoon
of baking soda
plus 1 tablespoon
of white
vinegar.
• Ground
flaxseed – mix 1
tablespoon of ground
flaxseed with 3 tablespoons
of cold water, stir then leave to
stand for 10 minutes to thicken.
• Whole chia seeds – mix 1
tablespoon of whole chia seeds
with 3 tablespoons of cold water,
stir, then leave to stand for 10
minutes to thicken.
• Silken tofu – use ¼ cup of
silken tofu, blended.
• Aquafaba (chickpea brine)
– use 2 tablespoons of aquafaba
instead of 1 egg white or 3
tablespoons for 1 whole egg.
• For glazing, in place of an egg
wash, milk also works or heated
apricot jam brushed over the
cooked bread or pastry.
• For breading, a mix of cornstarch
or cornflour and water
can work before coating with
breadcrumbs.
What can I use instead of
butter?
Here is a general guide for the
ratio of butter : substitute.
• Avocado 1:1
• Coconut oil 1:1
• Pumpkin puree 1:¾ (Pureed
squash, butternut, and
sometimes kumara can also be
used)
• Olive and vegetable oil 1:¾
• Applesauce 1:½
• Nut butters 1:1 (but use half
nut butter and half oil)
What can I use instead of
yoghurt?
Sour cream, silken tofu,
coconut yoghurt or cream/milk
all make great substitutes for
yoghurt and work using a 1:1
ratio!
Chocolate mayonnaise
cake
Want to try out a classic
dessert using an ingredient
substitute? Give this decadent
chocolate cake, which uses
mayonnaise instead of egg, a go!
Ingredients
2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
2 tsp baking soda
½ cup cocoa powder
SWAP: This decadent chocolate cake uses mayonnaise
instead of egg.
PHOTOS: GETTY, GEL LIM/ODT
1 cup water or cooled black
coffee
1 cup mayonnaise
1 tsp vanilla extract
Directions
Heat oven to 175 deg C/155 deg
C fan bake. Prepare a 20cm cake
tin or baking dish by greasing it
or lining with baking paper.
Sift the dry ingredients into
a bowl, mix using a whisk then
make a well in the centre.
Add remaining ingredients
and mix until just combined.
Pour into the prepared tin and
bake for 50-55 minutes or until
a skewer inserted in the middle
comes out clean.
Remove from the oven and
leave to cool for 5 minutes before
removing from the tin. Cool
completely if icing.
Te Aratai College:
Who We Are and How We Get There
At Te Aratai College we have four uara-values that we use to inform what is important in the
teaching and learning that occurs in our space.
The uara-values that we hold dear and
celebrate are: Manaakitanga, Whanaungatanga,
Rangatiratanga and Tūrangawaewae. They
embody our way of being so we encourage
and practise our uara in everything we do, from
our school philosophy through to our teaching
spaces, curriculum and relationships.
We start with Tūrangawaewae as the basis
of our learning. When a student feels a sense
of belonging they can then begin to build
on the other uara. In our tohu-logo we see
Tūrangawaewae in the base, the waka we share
and navigate together.
There have been a number of ākonga-learners
recently demonstrating Tūrangawaewae for
our kura. One group is our Pacific students
representing Te Aratai College at Canterbury
Polyfest. We were so proud to see this group
of performers in a vibrant celebration of Pacific
culture, language and identity through song and
dance.
Manaakitanga and Whanaungatanga are
symbolised in our logo as the awa-rivers,
representing the Ōtākaro and Ōpāwaho rivers,
either side of the central maunga-mountain.
Manaakitanga is the process of showing respect,
generosity and care for others. Whanaungatanga
is a relationship through shared experiences
providing people with a sense of belonging.
These uara are the life force that brings our
students together. When a learner feels
connected to their kura they can create
relationships for learning and life-long friendships.
They also learn how to care for themselves,
each other and their environment. Ākonga who
epitomise these uara are at the heart of what
makes a community.
Recently, Te Aratai learner
Dormay Lasafio represented
Canterbury in the Rugby League
Nines Tournament and received
the MVP, as well as representing
Canterbury in the UC Rugby Cup
last year. Dormay, and her sister
Alexsandra, have also received
Toloa Scholarships. These
scholarships are awarded to Pacific
students excelling in STEAM
(Science, Technology, Engineering,
Arts and Maths) subjects.
These successes showcase
Dormay’s connection to
her community, her teamwork, and her
ambassadorship.
In a similar vein, Ashlin Chandra is a
recent graduate of Te Aratai College who
has featured in local and national media
for her philanthropy. Ashlin was part of
the Generation Give programme that
helps young leaders give back to their
communities, while being a role model for
other youngsters. Her dedication to helping
young people with their mental health,
education, and escaping poverty, helped
raise $20,000 for Generation Give. Her dedication
and passion for helping others was recently
recognised nationally, with her being awarded a
scholarship by the Milford Foundation to help with
her tertiary studies.
Rangatiratanga is our final uara-value.
Rangatiratanga is associated with sovereignty
but extends itself to leadership, autonomy, and
self-determination. In our tohu-logo we recognize
the central maunga-mountain as Pae Maunga
- Kā Tiritiri o Te Moana, the Southern Alps. The
line in the middle represents the pathway
our students take on their journey; their selfactualisation,
the lofty mountain to which
they strive and aspire to.
Te Aratai College nurtures future leaders and
encourages ākonga-learners to demonstrate
Rangatiratanga in everything they do.
Over the last couple of years learners
in our senior Social Science Business
courses have secured spots on conference
trips to learn about entrepreneurship in
China, Latin America, and an immersive
two-day “Entrepreneurs in
Action’’ course in Wellington.
Te Aratai has also had many
successful teams from our Year
13 business classes competing
in the Young Enterprise Scheme
(YES), a competition where
students learn key business skills
and compete against schools
nationally by setting up their own
businesses. Recently, teams
have been featured extensively
in local media and received a
lot of positive feedback from the
community, including local MPs,
news media, and even taking the
title of winners of the 2019 Canterbury Young
Enterprise product launch. This course has
become a hotbed of creativity and leadership in
Te Aratai College.
We have also been honoured with further
examples of Rangatiratanga with our graduating
students receiving an impressive number of
tertiary scholarships. Last year we had leaving
Yr 13s who received over $500,000 (yes, over
half a million dollars!) in university scholarships.
These deserving students demonstrated a wide
range of value requirements across several
universities: academic achievement, resilience,
leadership, excellence, cultural contributions,
social engagement, overcoming adversity, and
many other indicators. These scholarships
provided an amazing boost for these young
people jump-starting their tertiary journey, with
the fees, cash, catered accommodation, summer
school programmes and mentoring support they
provided.
We are delighted that our uara-values contribute
to our learners’ positive pathways.
