STUDENTS
The Live Your Dreams scholarship helps
a Summit County graduate pursue their
dreams by reducing the financial burden
they face when applying to post-secondary
education. In its first year, the Live Your
Dreams scholarship received over $7,000
in donations from 33 donors representing
14 graduating classes at Summit High
School. This amount of support really makes
a big difference in a student’s life. We would
like to thank the alumni that stepped up to
make this happen.
We would also like to thank the Lundin Family
and our community partner FirstBank for their
combined match of $10,000.
Origins of The Live
Your Dreams Scholarship
Dan Marion, Summit High School Class
of 2008, reached out to us with an idea that
could make a difference. What started as
a grassroots email campaign with a group
of friends has grown to include all Summit
Alumni. We would like to thank Dan for
turning his dream into a reality.
LIVE YOUR DREAMS
SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT:
CATHY CONTRERAS
We are very excited to announce the inaugural
recipient of the Live Your Dreams Scholarship,
Cathy Contreras!
Cathy was awarded a renewable, 4-year
scholarship in the amount of $3,000 per year.
Cathy was selected because she is a true leader.
In between working several nights a week to
help support her family, Cathy graduated from
the Pre-Collegiate program and served as the
president of Mountain Dreamers and the French
Honors Society while at Summit High School.
Fluent in Spanish, French, and English, Cathy’s
language skills will help her reach a larger
demographic of those in need in her future in
medicine. She is described by her teachers as
“dedicated and determined,” and “a top choice
for scholarship dollars that she will wisely use.”
We know that the support provided by the Live
Your Dreams Scholarship will benefit her
immensely as she begins at University of
Colorado, Colorado Springs this fall.

INSPIRING THE
NEXT GENERATION
Mike and Jenny Lundin are incredible partners and supporters
of education, particularly for first-generation college students and
students pursuing a career in STEM. In addition to supporting the
four-year Lundin Family Scholarship at The Summit Foundation,
Mike and Jenny helped jumpstart the Live Your Dreams Scholarship
by offering to match the first $5,000 in donations. The match has
been met, and Mike and Jenny’s support helped alumni increase
their impact and jump on board to support the award.

SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT:
NANCY HIGUERA
Nancy Higuera is a graduate of Mountain Scholars and the Pre-
Collegiate program at the high school, both Special Initiatives of
The Summit Foundation. She graduated college in 2022 with an
Associate’s Degree in Business Administration & Management
and is now a Food System Manager at FIRC. We caught up with
her to see how she is doing:
A SUMMIT FOUNDATION SPECIAL INITIATIVE
Mountain Scholars empowers first generation, low-income,
and academically motivated students in completing a
four-year college degree or postsecondary certificate by
providing financial and academic support throughout
college. The program offers extensive one-on-one
mentoring, academic support, college navigation and
other support services such as career planning.

How did the Mountain Scholars program help you in your post
high school journey?
Mountain Scholars helped me in my post high school journey by
almost fully financing my Associates Degree at Colorado Mountain
College. Because of the scholarship, and a couple others, I did
not pay a single dollar out of pocket for my Associate Degree.
What is your current role with FIRC?
I am currently the Food System Manager at the FIRC. I oversee
operations of the Dillon Community Food Market and the
Breckenridge Food Market. I also help advance equity in our
local food systems.
What was the best lesson learned through the Mountain
Scholars program that helped you in your current role?
Our community, in my eyes, has always been willing to help each
other out. By receiving support from Mountain Scholars, I realized
that I want to continue helping my community like the Summit
Foundation did by providing me. I hope to do this by continuing
my work at the FIRC but by also receiving my counseling degree
and helping tackle mental health issues in our community.
When you’re not working with FIRC, what do you enjoy doing
in your spare time?
I LOVE to travel! I backpacked through 8 countries since graduating
high school in 2017.

PLEDGE 1% is an easy way to leverage a portion of an organization’s future success to support
non-profits in their community. Through their 1% Pledge, Outer Range has committed 1% of their
total profit, equity, product and staff time for 2022 to The Summit Foundation. A collaboration beer
called “One” was brewed with Pure Project Brewing out of California to commemorate the
announcement. Lee and Emily Cleghorn, founders of Outer Range, felt that The Summit Foundation
is a powerhouse of a non-profit who is able to utilize their donation to make a direct impact on the
entire Summit County community. “The Summit Foundation is truly grateful to Outer Range and our
new partnership,” says Taryn Power, Director of Development.
