Madison-Plains powerlifters dominate at state 

Girls take first; boy place fourth

Madison-Plains High School’s powerlifting team is continuing a 

tradition of excellence, turning in stellar performances at the Mc- 

Donald’s Bill McClain Ohio High School State Powerlifting Meet. 

The meet took place on March 18 at Kenton High School. 

The girls’ team placed first overall, and the boys’ team placed 

fourth overall. Among the program’s many individual state placers 

were first-place finishers Mackenzie Reeves, a sophomore who competed 

in the 145-pound class, and Adyson Hull, a senior who competed 

in the 125-pound class. 

At the state meet, the top eight finishers in each weight class in 

the girls’ competition go home with medals. Thirteen Madison- 

Plains girls earned medals. In addition to Reeves and Hull, they include:

Staff recognition 

At the March 21 school board meeting, Superintendent 

Chad Eisler read letters from Brad Miller and Deborah 

Adamczak, principal and assistant principal, 

respectively, at the K-6 building. The letters offered 

praise for Anna Ernst, a teacher in the district for eight 

years and an educator for a total of 23 years. Ernst currently 

serves as the district’s sixth-grade teacher leader. 

“(Anna) is the type of person that loses sleep wondering 

if she’s doing enough and how she can reach all of 

her students, especially those most vulnerable,” wrote 

Miller, adding that Ernst’s hard work and dedication is 

noticed every day. 

Adamczak stated that Ernst exemplifies an educator 

who goes above and beyond—leading by example, arriving 

early to work, and always smiling. 

“Her lessons are engaging and relevant, and she 

strives in her efforts to ensure that her students are successful 

academically and socially,” Adamczak wrote. 

Winter sports recognition 

Athletic Director Zane Scheiderer provided a wrapup 

for the district’s winter sports season outcomes and 

accomplishments. 

• High school boys’ basketball—The team notched its 

first winning season in a long time, going 9-7 in the conference 

and 14-10 overall. In the post-season, the team 

won a tournament game to become sectional champs. 

Held at home, the game represented the first time in 

school history that Madison-Plains hosted a tournament 

game. The team went on to the district semi-finals 

where they fell short to Columbus Academy. 

Senior Cameron Dennehy was named first-team all- 

Ohio Heritage Conference (OHC) and Central District 

honorable mention. He also was selected to play in the 

Miami Valley All-Star game on March 25. Senior 

Blayne Williams was named OHC honorable mention. 

• Junior high boys’ basketball—The seventh-grade 

team entered post-season conference play seeded third 

and finished second. The eighth-grade team was seeded 

second and came out as OHC champions. 

• High school girls’ basketball—The team went 2-14 in 

the conference and 5-18 overall. Freshman Claire 

Mason was named second-team all-OHC. Senior Chloe 

Kelly earned OHC honorable mention honors. Kelly and 

senior Molly Barber were selected to play in the District 

10 All-Star game on March 22. 

• Junior high girls’ basketball—The seventh- and 

eighth-grade teams were both seeded first going into 

post-season tournament play. Both finished as runnersup. 

• High school indoor track— “This is the largest indoor 

track team we’ve had in quite some time,” Scheiderer 

reported. 

At districts, the boys finished third as a team, and 

the girls finished ninth. Senior Seth Marchiando qualified 

for the indoor track state meet in the weight throw. 

Several Madison-Plains indoor track records were 

broken this season: 

- 800-meter run, 1,600-meter run, and 3,200-meter 

run—senior Amy Burchett; 

- 4x200-meter relay—seniors J’on Jackson and Ben 

Stoughton, junior Peyton Smith, and sophomore Colby 

Stoughton; 

- weight throw—Seth Marchiando; 

- 60-meter hurdles—Peyton Smith; 

- 60-meter and 200-meter dashes—Ben Stoughton; 

and 

- long jump—Colby Stoughton. 

• High school wrestling—The team placed seventh 

overall in the OHC. Sophomore Eric Roeder earned second-team 

all-OHC honors. Senior Taylor McCabe was 

named OHC honorable mention. Freshman Tre Smith, 

McCabe, sophomore Richie Roeder, and Eric Roeder 

qualified for districts. Freshman Tara Nagel and junior 

Payne Haverfield competed at regionals. 

• College commitments—So far, four seniors have committed 

to playing sports at the college level: Amy 

Burchett, Baldwin Wallace University, cross country 

and track and field; Chloe Kelly, Ohio Wesleyan University, 

basketball; Evan Coil, Ashland University, football; 

and Olivia Finke, Otterbein University, track and 

field.

Coaches Mike Siders and Paul Bryant credit the program’s 

success, in part, to their athletes’ dedication. 

“Our school athletes train in the weight room yearround 

which is the foundation of winning and winning 

championships,” Siders said. 

Some members of the team are multi-sport athletes. 

Some focus solely on powerlifting. Mackenzie Reeves is 

an example of a multi-sport athlete. The Thursday before 

the state powerlifting meet, she played in a softball 

scrimmage. The Friday before, she played in a volleyball 

tournament in Indiana. She nabbed a state title at 

the powerlifting meet on Saturday, then returned to In- 

diana on Sunday to finish the volleyball tourney. 

“Not to mention, she just wrapped up a long season 

of basketball,” Siders said. “This is just an example of 

what other lifters do through the multiple seasons at 

Madison-Plains.” 

Siders also points to support as another contributing 

factor to the powerlifting program’s success. 

“I have said this for many years: ‘It takes a community 

to win championships,’” he said. 

That community includes coaches from not only the 

powerlifting team but other sports, as well, Siders explained. 

“Is there a formula? Yes. It’s all of us supporting 

each other through all the different seasons and doing 

what is in the best interest of our kids at Madison- 

Plains,” he said. 

He also appreciates the support the program receives 

from teachers, school administrators, parents, 

and school district residents. 

The girls’ and boys’ teams compete in Divisions 5, 6, 

and 7 at the state meet. This year, the team took 57 

lifters to the state meet. A total of 600 lifters from 

around the state participated. 

The Madison-Plains powerlifting program was established 

in 2011.

Mad River Region. 

NOTICE OF PROPOSED MAJOR UTILITY FACILITY 

Oak Run Solar Project, LLC (Oak Run Solar) a wholly-owned subsidiary of Savion, LLC 

(Savion), which is part of the Shell Group, is proposing to construct an up to 800-megawatt 

(MW) alternating current solar-powered generation facility and associated transmission line facilities 

in portions of Monroe, Somerford, and Deercreek Townships in Madison County, Ohio. 

The project may also contain a large-scale co-located battery energy storage system up to 300 

MWs in size. The project will include two 230 kilovolt (kV) aboveground generation tie-in lines 

(gen-tie lines), built fully within the project boundary that run from the internal project substations 

to facilitate the project’s interconnection to the regional transmission grid via a project 

step-up substation. The 230 kV gen-tie lines will total approximately 3.6 miles (5.8 kilometers) 

in length. The project area will encompass approximately 6,050 acres of land. All components 

and infrastructure necessary for the generation facility, the transmission line facilities, and the 

battery energy storage system will occupy approximately 4,400 acres of the project area. The 

purpose of the project is to generate and deliver 800-MW of clean, cost-effective, renewable energy 

to the PJM Interconnection, LLC transmission grid. The completed project will generate 

electricity using virtually no fuels or water and with effectively zero air emissions and operational 

waste generation. This project is intended to fill the need for a more diverse national energy portfolio 

that will include a higher percentage of energy generated from renewable resources. 

Oak Run Solar filed its application with the Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB) for a certificate 

to construct, operate, and maintain the proposed generation facility and associated transmission 

line facilities in OPSB Case Nos. 22-549-EL-BGN or 22-550-EL-BTX, respectively. The application 

is currently pending and a copy of the application is available on: 

• the OPSB website at https://dis.puc.state.oh.us/CaseRecord.aspx?CaseNo=22-549&x=0&y=0 

or https://dis.puc.state.oh.us/CaseRecord.aspx?CaseNo=22-550&x=8&y=19; and

On January 20, 2023, the OPSB established the procedural schedule in this case. The public 

will be given an opportunity to comment on the proposed facility. The first notice of the procedural 

schedule was published in the Madison Messenger, a newspaper of general circulation in 

the project area, on January 29, 2023. The public hearing in Oak Run’s OPSB application shall 

consist of two parts: 

(1) A local public hearing, pursuant to R.C. 4906.08(C), where the OPSB shall accept 

written or oral testimony from any person, commencing April 11, 2023, at 5:00 p.m., 

at Jonathan Alder High School, 9200 US-42, Plain City, Ohio 43064. 

(2) An evidentiary hearing commencing on May 15, 2023, at 10:00 a.m., Hearing Room 

11-A, at the offices of the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, 180 East Broad Street, 

Columbus, Ohio 43215. 

Funds for fire departments 

The Jefferson Township Fire Department 

in West Jefferson and the Tri-County 

Joint Fire District in Mount Sterling recently 

received equipment grants through 

the Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division 

of State Fire Marshal. 

Jefferson Township received $4,038 for 

miscellaneous equipment. Tri-County received 

$10,000 for personal protective 

equipment. They are among 154 fire departments 

in 70 Ohio counties who received 

equipment grants. 

“Our firefighters put their lives on the 

line every day to protect us from the dangers 

of fire and other emergencies,” Gov. 

Mike DeWine said. “These grants are just 

one way we can show our appreciation and 

support for our firefighters, especially our 

volunteer firefighters, allowing them to 

better protect the lives and property of the 

communities they serve.” 

Allowable equipment within the grant 

includes protective clothing, self-contained 

breathing apparatus, communications 

equipment, and other miscellaneous equipment. 

The fire departments were selected 

based on a variety of criteria, including the 

department’s annual budget, number of 

fire incidents, and resident population 

served. Eligible fire departments must 

serve a population of less than 25,000. 

Taking entries for recycled art exhibit 

London Art Center, 121 E. First St., London, 

is hosting a Creative Recycling Exhibit 

April 27-May 21 with reception set for 2-4 

p.m. April 29. The public is invited to submit 

entries. All entries must be dropped off 

at the center between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Teachers Art Show 

The London Visual Arts Guild is hosting the 2023 Teachers Show 

through April 23. The show features the artwork of teachers who 

are giving classes and demonstrations at the London Arts Center

student who takes one or more classes at the Arts Center this year.

Italian Sub Fundraiser 

The Madison County Board of Developmental Disabilities 

is selling Italian sub sandwiches to benefit 

Madison County Special Olympics. Sandwiches (hot or

signed a proclamation declaring March 21- 

27, 2023, as National Agriculture Week. 

Representatives of the Madison County 

Farm Bureau and London and Madison- 

Plains FFA chapters presented each commissioner 

with a basket filled with locally 

grown and produced items and information 

about National Ag Week. 

American agriculture plays a crucial 

role in strengthening the economy and providing 

food for people and is the nation’s

Jackson commits to Muskingum 

Jonathan Alder High School senior Will Jackson signs his letter of intent to compete 

in track and field at Muskingum University: (front row, from left) Will’s mother, Beth;

track coach. Muskingum is a member of NCAA Div. III and competes in the Ohio Athletic 

Conference. Will said he chose Muskingum because it has strong programs for 

the two majors he is considering, one of which is exercise science, and new athletic 

facilities that will allow him to train year-round. His goal is to become a two-time All- 

American in discus.

WOODFORK 

Paula Jean Woodfork, 42, of Springfield, 

Ohio, died on March 16, 2023, in Hospice of 

Dayton. 

Paula was born on May 30, 1980, in London, 

Ohio, a daughter of Shirley Leroy Johnson 

and Gloria Woodfork. 

She is survived by: four children, Derik, 

Tyler, Alyssa and Alaina; granddaughter, 

Kamirah; three sisters, Michelle Woodfork, 

Cheryl Woodfork, and Diana Hamilton; 

three brothers, Michael Johnson, Steven 

(Angela) Johnson, and Richard (Theresa) 

Johnson; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, 

nephews, and cousins, including special 

cousins, Abby (Denise) Woodfork, Shanequa 

Crowe, Monike Woodfork, and Ronald 

Crowe. 

Paula had a big heart, loved making 

crafts and playing video games, but most of 

all she loved her family. 

Memorials in Paula’s name may be made 

to the American Cancer Society at

Visitation and a memorial service was 

held on April 1 in Eberle-Fisher Funeral 

Home and Crematory, London, with Pastor 

Tyrone Artis and Frederick Stegner, president

WEBB 

Steven Webb, 70, of Williamsport, Ohio, 

passed away on March 21, 2023. He served 

in the U.S. Army and enjoyed spending time 

with his family, and friends. He also enjoyed 

fishing, playing his guitar, and singing, but 

he especially loved spending time with his 

grandchildren. He worked and retired from 

Ohio Willow Wood and also worked for J. 

Adams Farms. Steve was the kind of guy 

that everyone called when they needed 

something fixed. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, 

Robert and Evelyn Webb, and brothers, Bob 

Webb and Randy Webb. 

Steve is survived by: his loving wife of 49 

years, Mary Webb; daughters, Sonsearay

Beth (Kevin) Bateman, and J.P. (Ashley) 

Hockenbery; several great- and 

great-great grandchildren.

SAYRE 

Naomi Sayre, 21, went to be with the 

Lord and her father, Keith Sayre. Born on 

Feb. 28, 2002, in Wilmington, Ohio, she was 

the daughter of Keith and Theresa Sayre. 

Naomi was a 2020 graduate of Miami Trace 

High School. 

Naomi was a joy to her family, who loved 

her deeply. She was a people person and 

loved working with the elderly. She will be 

missed by her dog, Romeo, who she loved 

dearly. She was a girl of great faith, but life 

dealt her some hard blows which eventually 

took her away from us. We know she is now 

at peace with her father, who she longed to 

know. We have so many wonderful memories 

of Naomi that will always remain in our 

hearts. 

Survivors include: her mother, Theresa 

Sayre; brother, Anthony Sayre; sister, 

Shaundra Sayre; aunt and uncle, Twyla and 

Daniel McNamara; cousins, Robert 

(Shawna) McNamara and Abigail (Tiffany) 

Gray; grandfather, Russell Hanners; greataunt, 

Sandy Watson; and many friends. 

She was preceded in death by: her father, 

Keith Sayre; grandmother, Linda Lee; and 

grandfather, Robert Judd.

Suzanne “Susie” Stewart, 75, passed 

away peacefully on March 24, 2023, surrounded 

by her family and loved ones. 

Susie was born at home on Nov. 14, 1947, 

the second of eight kids. She grew up in 

West Jefferson and attended The Ohio State 

University, graduating with a 4.0 in her 

major. She went on to have the most important 

job in the world: mother to her two children. 

She was truly the ideal mother, and 

that title was only surpassed by that of 

grandmother to her grandchildren. Her 

laugh was infectious, and her smile could 

brighten anyone’s day. She loved spoiling 

her grandchildren, flowers, traveling the 

world, jewelry, and her Bentley. 

She was preceded in death by: her father, 

George “Fred” Fry; her mother, Roberta Fry; 

her cousin, Sharon Armentrout; and her 

beloved Bichon, Griswold. 

She is survived by: her daughter, Alicia 

(Justin) Fenn of Hilliard, her son, Bryan 

(Jennifer) Stewart of Atlanta; her sisters, 

Beverly (Louis) Miller, Rebecca Kover, and 

Lisa (Cleve) Fry; her brothers, Robert (Sandra) 

Fry, Donnie (Ann) Fry, Pete (Karla) 

Fry, and Larry Fry; half-brothers, Dale 

(Ruth) Fry and Duane (Leanne) Fry; and 

her puppy, Snuggles. She also is survived by 

her grandchildren who were the light of her 

life, Alexander and Isabella Fenn and Anna 

and Henry Stewart. She is also survived by 

many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, greatnephews, 

and special friends. 

Susie will be remembered by everyone 

for her laugh, her smile, her quiet strength, 

and her generosity which knew no limits. 

We have the deepest gratitude and appreciation 

for Dr. Sweeney and his team at 

COHA, as well as the ICU team at The 

James, for their loving care of Susie.

The Village of West Jefferson has initiated the rezoning 

of the above referenced property from its current 

zoning classification of “C-2” to “Planned Mixed 

Use Development-PMU.” 

The purpose of the rezoning is due to an oversight 

which permitted the property to retain the Jefferson 

Township “C-2” designation, despite “C-2” not 

appearing as a valid designation under the Village 

Ordinances. The “Planned Mixed Use-PMU” designation 

will permit the current usage to continue 

with no modifications. 

This rezoning it merely to “clean up” the Village zoning

The Mount Sterling Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting on March 10 for the grand opening of Crossroads

Crossroads Cottage, 25 S. London St., 

Mount Sterling, celebrated its grand opening 

on March 10. 

Owned by Tamra Hall and Julie Nichols, 

the French-inspired boutique sells home 

decor, florals, casual wear, antiques, and 

furniture, along with artwork and jewelry 

by local vendors. 

The boutique also offers formal wear for 

girls and women for prom, homecoming, and 

blacktie events. The store can help brides 

with bridesmaid dresses and soon will offer 

tuxedo rentals. 

The formal wear offerings are made possible 

through Crossroads Cottage’s partnership 

with Valerie Heiby, owner of Grove 

Chic Boutique in Grove City. Heiby, who 

sells casual wear at Urban Pineapple in 

Mount Sterling, created Sterling Chic Boutique 

to sell formal wear at Crossroads Cottage. 

“We want to provide a centralized point 

for students in local school systems to come 

for their prom and homecoming dresses. 

This way, they don’t have to travel far,” Hall 

said. “We’ve already had lots of girls coming 

in to try on and buy dresses.”

hidden at the library through April 29. Read 

the joke inside to a library staff member and 

earn a piece of candy, then hide the egg for 

someone else to find. 

• Guess the Number of Lids. Through

at the library for a chance to win an ecofriendly 

prize. Jars and prizes are located in

fourth Saturday of each month. 

• Bunny Basics for Beginners. Between 

10 a.m. and noon April 8, meet live bunnies 

and learn how to care for them, how they interact 

with people and other pets, and what 

makes them a good family pet. Dayton 

House Rabbit Society is hosting the event 

and will share information about fostering 

bunnies, bunny resources in Ohio, rabbit 

rescue organizations, and how to adopt a 

bunny. Drinks and snacks will be provided. 

• Teen Gaming Event. Teens ages 12-18 

are invited to visit the library 1-5 p.m. April 

22 for a an afternoon of Xbox and Switch 

gaming with snacks, soda, and prizes. Bring

Mount Sterling Friends of the Library hosted a Peeps Diorama event at the library for
