SURGERY DELAYS are holding
up recovery for a Darfield man
almost killed in a fiery explosion
in his driveway.
Kevin Burney,
61, has this month
marked one year
since the accident,
which resulted in
burns to 70 per cent
of his body.
While he is
happy with how
he has healed, he
is frustrated and angry as two
Kevin
Burney
consecutive surgeries planned at
Christchurch Hospital have been
delayed.
The two surgeries will follow
several skin graft operations
Burney had prior to returning
home from hospital in July last
year. They will be to free up
movement in his elbows, focused
on skin and bone in the joints.
The first was planned for January
and has now been delayed to June.
Until he has these surgeries,
Burney can not lift his arms above
his head and needs help with basic
tasks such as getting dressed,
combing his hair and shaving.
the new pedestrian crossing at the
upgraded SH73/Weedons Ross Rd
intersection.
• By Daniel Alvey
“IT’S REALLY fixed our town.”
That was the reaction from
West Melton District Residents
Association chair Tim Schurr to
the completion of the new traffic
lights at the township’s major
intersection.
Schurr was thrilled to see
the State Highway 73/Weedons
Ross Rd intersection upgrade
officially opened last week after
the association petitioned for it
to be completed.
“It was such a barrier having
the state highway through our
town – it has reconnected West
Melton,” Schurr said.
“It’s a major win for road
safety.”
The association delivered 2333
signatures on the petition to
Parliament in 2020.
“There was a lot of
work in those early
days to raise its profile,”
Schurr said.
The upgrades also
improve pedestrian
safety in the area, with
West Melton School
pupils now able to cross
the intersection safely.
Schurr has already noticed
how much safer it is since
the lights were first switched on
last month.
Intersection upgrade ‘major win’
“What we are seeing is more
kids walking, cycling or scootering
to school now because it is
much safer for them,” he said.
Since 2006 there have
been 13 crashes at the
intersection, of which
one was serious, four
were minor, and eight
caused no injuries.
Schurr was hoping
to see a drop in the
number of crashes with
the addition of the
traffic lights.
Fire caused
by faulty
heat unit
• By Susan Sandys
A HOUSE fire in Lincoln was
caused by the motor in a faulty
heat transfer unit that was
recalled nine years ago.
The Lincoln Volunteer Fire
Brigade responded to a call about
smoke at a house in Ryelands
Drive on March 30.
An electrician confirmed the
smoke was from the unit, which
transferred excess heat from one
room to another. The resident
posted to social media about the
smoke, saying they did not know
where it was coming from.
“I am pleased I was working at
home, was there to act quick, and
feel so lucky it did not happen
while we were asleep. It could
have been horrific,” she said.
Smoke filled the bedrooms,
where there were no smoke
alarms. She later discovered
the unit was one of four models
voluntarily recalled by Weiss
Ltd in 2014. The recall was
for model numbers FV652,
FV653, FV 602 and FV 603,
manufactured between 2007 and
2009. The units caused several
fires and overheating incidents.
The resident said Weiss will
replace it but she warned other
homeowners to check their heat
transfer unit’s model number.
JUST FOUR months after it was
constructed, a skate ramp in
Lincoln is being removed due to
noise complaints.
The removal has upset a couple
living nearby, who were shocked
when they saw the ramp being
dismantled last week.
“It frustrates me,” the man said.
“My granddaughter comes and
stays with us in the holidays, she
looks forward to going down
there. There’s hundreds of kids
use it. These kids will miss out
completely,” he said.
“I just feel it’s unfair on the
children, that was extremely
popular,” the woman said.
The couple did not want to be
named as they did not want to
get offside with their neighbours,
some of whom may have been
among those who complained
about noise from the ramp.
The couple had phoned the
district council to find out
why the skate ramp was being
removed, and were told it was
because of noise complaints.
The ramp is in the Rosemerryn
subdivision. It opened in conjunction
with an adjoining pump
track in December.
you think about the skate
ramp being removed?
Email barry@starmedia.
kiwi
The district council confirmed
it had received a “series of noise
complaints.”
Reserves operations manager
Jonathan Crawford said the district
council then met with the
Rosemerryn developer.
“It is unfortunate that, despite
efforts and good will by the developer,
a solution could not be
found,” Crawford said.
Rosemerryn confirmed on its
website it was removing the ramp
due to the noise complaints.
“The concerns were over the
reported loud drumming noise
generated when skaters land on
the skate ramp which has a hollow
core.”
Further investigations had
found the noise could not be adequately
mitigated through core
filling and insulating the ramp.
While it was disappointing
to have to remove the ramp, the
materials would be re-purposed
to benefit other skate youth
facilities in Canterbury.
Job security on burns victim’s mind
• From page 1
He also can not return to his
job as a printer in Christchurch.
“It’s a bit disappointing,
because you really want to get
this over with and get on with
your life,” Burney said.
“I would have been back to
work about now, but because of
that delay it’s going to be August
or something like that.”
Burney said the longer he
stayed away from his job, the
more he feared his employer
would not be able to hold the
position open for him.
He had worked there for more
than 30 years, and wanted to
stay in order to retain financial
security for himself and wife
Amanda leading into retirement.
“If I don’t go back to work,
it would impact our future, it
would not be as secure,” Burney
said.
“I have no intention of retiring,
I have always been active and
work is a big part of my life.”
Burney said when told his
surgery was being delayed, there
had been no specific reason
given. He and wife Amanda
suspected it was due to hospital
workforce shortages, as had been
reported in the media.
OFF WORK: As life slowly returns to normal for Kevin Burney, with wife Amanda, surgery
essential to his recovery has been delayed. Inset – in Middlemore Hospital’s intensive
care unit last year.
the anaesthetic technician workforce,
with initiatives to solve
this not expected until the end of
this month.
A spokesperson would not
comment on Burney’s case specifically,
but said surgical teams
were delivering 70-75 per cent
of normal planned care targets,
with a 50 per cent reduction in
some specialities.
“Surgeons in Christchurch
are having to prioritise patients
waiting for surgery every day,
with only the most urgent cases
going ahead and some patients
have had to be deferred at short
notice,” the spokesperson said.
Burney suffered burns to
70 per cent of his body when
a metal drum he was using
a grinder on in his driveway
exploded in flames on April
2, last year. He was rushed
to Christchurch in a critical
condition, and airlifted to
Middlemore Hospital in
Auckland.
The first four weeks were in intensive
care, where doctors said
they had not seen burns as severe
since those they treated from the
deadly White Island eruption.
They did not know whether
Burney would survive as he
battled for his life. One of his
lungs collapsed, he suffered an
infection and his heart stopped
during surgery.
Burney’s family were overjoyed
when he made enough progress
to be taken out of intensive care,
moving to the hospital’s specialist
burns unit on April 30.
He spent eight weeks in the
burns unit, undergoing several
skin graft surgeries. The surgeries
were nine-hour marathons
involving three surgeons, where
skin was taken from unburned
areas of his tummy and buttocks,
to be grafted onto the
burned areas of his torso, arms,
hands, and the front and back of
his thighs.
When he returned home, he
had to wear a compression suit,
and dressings covered his back,
chest and arms. Now his skin
has mostly healed, with just two
dressings remaining on his upper
arms.
Burney said he and Amanda
were enjoying life, having taken
a family trip to Australia in November
and a couple of weekend
vacations in their caravan. He
had also got back into his passion
of running, having done
some “light jogging” near his
home.
Overall he and Amanda felt
positive about his recovery,
which was being aided by district
nurse visits three times a week to
reapply dressings, and a
physiotherapist visiting twice a
week.
“I’m fine, I have got a good
team of support that come
around, and work with me.”
Tragic call sticks in firefighter’s mind
• By Daniel Alvey
CHRISTMAS EVE 1998, a car
is hit by a train fatally injuring
the sole occupant. Tucked in the
back seat was a teddy bear.
That call-out has always stuck
with Nigel Lilley who marked
25 years as a volunteer with the
Rolleston Volunteer Fire Brigade.
“Some of the most memorable
(call-outs) can’t be gone into in
detail,” Lilley said.
“There are scenes that people
should never have to see, scenes
which cannot be unseen.
“One of my first few calls was
to a car that had been hit by a
train. It was Christmas Eve. The
sole occupant male of the car that
was fatally injured had a massive
teddy bear on the back seat.
“That one never leaves my
mind.”
Ever since he was young,
Lilley has wanted to be a
firefighter. That wish was
realised in 1998, when he signed
up for the Rolleston brigade at
age 20.
In 2010, he was promoted to
chief fire officer, a role he stayed
in for 10 years until he passed on
the reins in 2019.
Away from the fire truck,
Lilley has also served on the
Mid Canterbury Fire Brigades
Sub Association and Canterbury
Provincial Fire Brigades
Association, including a term
SERVICE: Nigel Lilley speaks at an event to mark 25 years
as a volunteer firefighter. Right – Knights Rd residents were
evacuated as seven fire trucks and four helicopters battled
a large blaze in 2017. Bottom right – Lilley helped fight the
Port Hills fire.
as president on both. He was
also on the United Fire Brigades
Association of NZ board and
was deputy chair for a couple of
years.
Lilley works at Fire and
Emergency New Zealand in an
information, communications
and technology role.
Lilley has attended some big
fires across Canterbury over
the past 25 years, including the
Orana Park fire in 2003, Port
Hills blaze in February 2017, and
Knights Rd fire near Rolleston in
2017.
“I worked voluntarily as a
logistics officer in the city for
two-and-a-half-weeks straight
immediately following the
Christchurch earthquake.”
Lilley’s skills have taken him
overseas to Phoenix, Arizona, in
the United States in 2014 and to
Australia multiple times.
“There are probably only five or
six fire stations I have never been
inside of the 650 stations that
make up our service.”
Lilley said it was good to be
recognised, but didn’t want to
make a big deal of it.
“I spend a lot of my time
presenting these very awards all
around the country.
“I certainly didn’t want the
fuss, though.
“It’s not in my makeup.”
Legal Matters
Inheritance – What’s
Mine is Not Yours
If you are in a qualifying
relationship and inherit assets
(whether those assets be physical
items or cash) the law does
not require you to share your
inheritance with your partner,
and therefore these assets will
initially be regarded as separate
property. This means the
inheritance remains the property
of the party that inherited –
hence, what’s mine is not yours!
If, however, you intermingle the
inheritance with joint assets it
becomes relationship property.
An example of intermingling
inheritance would be the transfer
of inherited money into a joint
bank account with your partner.
If you were to inherit a motor
vehicle and proceed to use it for
the benefit of your relationship
then there is a high chance this
asset would become relationship
property.
To obtain certainty around
the status of inherited assets,
we recommend entering into
a Contracting Out Agreement
under s21 of the Property
(Relationships) Act 1976. This
Agreement can cover just the
inherited assets to protect their
status as separate property, or
it can cover other items brought
to the relationship where it is
agreed these assets should not
be divided equally in the event
of separation. The Contracting
Out Agreement could state
that the party who inherited
the money would be paid out
the amount of their inheritance
before the relationship property
is divided. Or, if the inheritance
were invested into real estate
(the Property), for example, the
contribution could be agreed to
reflect a percentage of the value
of the Property and therefore
in the event of Separation the
percentage share of the Property
would be paid back – although
with this option can come a risk
of capital loss.
We often provide independent
estate advice, relationship
property advice, and can of
course assist with property
investment.
ROADBLOCK: Perymans Rd residents Vicki Black and John Ryan want the
road sealed but not closed at the intersection with State Highway 75.
Battle to tarseal
road could lead
to dead end
• By Daniel Alvey
FOR MORE THAN 10 years John Ryan
has been calling for the final 500m of
Perymans Rd in Tai Tapu to be sealed –
but now a plan to do so could see the road
become a dead end.
The district council is proposing to
seal the remaining gravel section before
July but close the intersection with State
Highway 75 for safety reasons, ending
Perymans Rd where it crosses the Halswell
River.
Ryan uses the road to access his fields
and was among 47 submitters who
provided feedback to the district council
on the closure.
“It is a key access for everyone on
Perymans Rd,” Ryan said.
He believes closing the intersection will
not improve safety.
“The SH75, Lincoln Tai Tapu Rd
intersection is marginal on several fronts
– narrow bridge, poor visibility, wayward
pedestrians, no pedestrian way over the
bridge.”
Ryan said residents in the area have been
calling for the road to be sealed for years
because of the dust which gets kicked up
over summer.
“The road must be sealed for health and
safety purposes for the residents of a good
portion of Tai Tapu township.”
Ryan spoke to district councillors about
the ongoing issue at Annual Plan public
meetings in 2013, 2015 and 2022. The
district council and Waka Kotahi New
Zealand Transport Agency sought to close
the intersection in 2003 and 2013.
Ryan got an engineering report done
in 2013, which concluded closing the
intersection would not resolve the safety
concerns.
Perymans Rd currently has an 80km/h
speed limit, but Ryan said he would be
happy to see it lowered or speed bumps
added to slow traffic if the intersection was
to remain open.
The district council said if the
intersection remained open, the road
would need to be widened and the
intersection redesigned to ensure it was
safe. This would come with a significant
increase in costs and time to design and
complete the work.
The district council has put $330,000
aside to complete the project, but an exact
price may be decided when the transport
committee meets on May 10 to consider
the various options including potential
costs and road layouts.
COSTS: The Darfield sewer trunk project ran over budget by $3.40 million.
PHOTO: SDC
Councillor raises
concerns about
budget blowouts
• By Daniel Alvey
CONCERNS HAVE been raised about
the budget forecasting of district council
projects not being accurate enough, after a
number of cost overruns.
Councillor Grant Miller raised
the issue in the finance and performance
committee meeting last
week.
“We are seeing continual budget
overruns and forecasting not
just being marginally out but
substantially out,” Miller said.
“It raises real concerns for us as
governors around our budgeting
processes, we’re sending out a 5.9
per cent rates increase based on the
forecast we are doing here and history
is telling us that our forecasting
is not good.”
Miller referenced the Darfield
trunk sewer project, which saw a
sewer line built from Darfield to
Pines Wastewater Treatment Plant,
and pump stations at Kirwee and
Darfield. The current financial forecast
estimates the total project costs will exceed
the approved budget by $3.40 million with
a current estimate of $22.36 million.
His second example was the Kakaha
Park (Prebbleton) car park development,
with $420,000 in roading adjustments not
originally within scope.
“It’s a damning indictment on our
business practice here, any other business
wouldn’t get away with that lack of project
management. This is a disaster, you can’t
dress it up any other way,” Miller said.
District council group manager, enabling
services, Kelvin Manson, came to
the defence of the budgeting processes.
He said as projects progress exact costs
become clearer with the preparation of
project budgets requiring staff to make
assumptions and estimates.
“The current economic conditions with
higher levels of inflation, tight labour
market, and constrained supply chains
Grant Miller
Kelvin
Manson
has meant there have been challenges to
the accuracy of project forecasts,” Manson
said.
Miller said projects that overrun need to
be closely scrutinised.
“We employ professional roading engineers
and design agents to get these
right so again . . . (it) is going back
to these people and saying actually
where did you get this wrong.
“I like to think that we should
spend every dollar like it’s our own.”
Manson said at the end of any
major project there is a review
that focuses on all aspects of the
project, including financial performance,
from which learning is
derived.
Mayor Sam Broughton defended
district council staff, saying responsibility
was on councillors as well as
staff.
“The decision around the Darfield
sewage line was a decision we made
as councillors against staff recommendation,
because of a philosophical
position we took because we wanted
a better outcome for our community,”
Broughton said.
“The culture we have as governors set
the tone for the rest of the council staff so
compressed timelines and new projects
jumping in priority adds the emphasis that
the most important thing is to get on with
it.”
The district council is also looking at
providing more accurate reporting of
professional fees, a group of costs
often outsourced. The fees in this
category include engineering, quantity
surveying, legal, planning, and project
management.
“The council is refining its project
reporting to create greater transparency
and enhanced focus on cost and value
management. The approach to reporting
is evolving with further changes planned
that will enhance the council’s project
controls,” Manson said.

Mother’s heartbreak: ‘Did his
life mean nothing to you?’
• By Emily Moorhouse
A WOMAN who was on
methamphetamine when she
caused a crash that killed her
fiancé has continued to re-offend
following her sentence of home
detention.
Now the dead man’s mother
has asked her former daughterin-law
if her son’s life meant
nothing to her.
Shizelle Harland was behind
the wheel with meth in her
system when she drifted on to
the wrong side of the road, just
south of Dunsandel. She collided
head-on with a van, killing her
fiancé Joshua Ryder.
On Friday, March 31, Harland
appeared in the district court,
where she was re-sentenced for
the fatal 2021 collision. She was
also sentenced on new charges.
In an emotional victim impact
statement, Ryder’s mother
told the court losing a child
is the worst pain she has ever
experienced.
“I still experience the pain of
losing Josh every single day
. . . how do you get over losing a
child?”
She expressed disappointment
and concern that Harland
continued to breach home
detention, the sentence she
received for the crash that killed
Ryder.
“Did his life mean nothing to
you?” Ryder’s mother thought
about her son every day and said
the realisation he was dead hit
her like a “punch in the tummy.”
She said home detention was a
“small price to pay for a life.”
On July 7, 2021, Ryder was
driving home from hospital after
visiting a friend in Christchurch.
Harland and another passenger
were in the car.
Harland asked Ryder to pull
over so she could drive because
he was tired and swerving over
the road. She overtook a car
at excessive speed, south of
Dunsandel. Shortly afterwards,
she drifted onto the wrong side
of the road and collided head-on
with a van.
Both Ryder and the other
passenger weren’t wearing seat
belts.
Ryder died at the scene, while
the other passenger, who suffered
broken ribs, a broken wrist, a
cracked pelvis, an air bubble in
his lung and extensive bruising
to his lower body, was taken to
Christchurch Hospital.
Harland was also taken to the
hospital and subsequent tests
showed she had meth in her
system. She was also diagnosed
with a moderate brain injury.
She was charged with
aggravated careless driving
causing death and injury
and was sentenced to home
detention. But it wasn’t long
before she breached it.
The summary of facts stated
in May last year, Harland stole a
caravan from a property.
In August, she stole an axe and
kindling from a shed at a private
dwelling, and then in November
police searched her home and
found an air rifle, 61.29 grams
of cannabis, a used meth pipe, a
PRISON TIME: Shizelle Harland was the driver involved in
a collision that killed her fiancé Joshua Ryder.
modified bong and a cannabis
grinder. Police also found 0.41g
of cocaine and a stolen electric
bike valued at $4399.
The Crown said imprisonment
was the only appropriate
outcome, given Harland had
continued to breach her previous
sentence of home detention to
re-offend.
Harland’s lawyer Matthew
Bonniface said time spent in
custody was a much-needed
“reality check” for
his client, who was
genuinely remorseful
for her actions.
“The person I speak
to over the phone now
in prison is entirely
different to the one I
met a few months ago.”
He said the
address at which
Harland was serving
her home detention
sentence had set her
up for failure, leading to her reoffending
as she “fell victim” to
pre-exposed struggles with drug
addiction.
Bonniface said following the
death of Ryder, Harland did
well for a while but then gave
up on herself. He said she now
understood compliance with
her sentence was a necessity and
she was willing to participate in
rehabilitation.
Judge Brian Callaghan said
while Harland seemed to be on
a road to recovery, imposing
another sentence of home
detention would not be
responsible.
“I accept that custody
hasn’t been an easy
task for you, but it’s not
supposed to be,” he told
her.
He sentenced Harland
to 14 months in prison
for the new charges
Matthew and seven months for
Bonniface the driving charges
resulting in Ryder’s death.
Callaghan imposed an end
sentence of 21 months in prison.
‘Fine hall’ in honour of soldiers turns 100
• By Susan Sandys
THE SPRINGSTON South
Soldiers’ Memorial Hall remains
the pride of its community more
than 100 years after opening.
Members of its committee are
preparing to commemorate the
hall’s centenary over the weekend,
ahead of Anzac Day later
this month.
Chair Mike Glover said former
and current residents were looking
forward to marking the important
milestone, for a building
that had a long history of being a
hub in the area.
“Being a soldiers’ memorial
hall, a strong aspect of the celebrations
will be in honouring
the local people who served in
the world wars,” Glover said.
The hall opened in 1921, but
the centenary is being held this
year after plans for 2021, then
2022, were derailed by Covid-19.
Old newspaper articles accessed
via Papers Past reveal there was “a
very large gathering of residents
and visitors” at the opening of the
hall on April 21, 1921.
A Press reporter said the
ceremony was performed by Mr
R A Chaffey, who “congratulated
the people of the district on
putting up such a fine hall to the
memory of those who had fought
for their country, and urged
that they should see to it that
any returned maimed soldier or
any in ill-health should want for
nothing.”
The Ellesmere Guardian reported
on one of the first events
at the hall, a special service
in memory of three former
Springston South School pupils
who sacrificed their lives in
World War 1.
Mr H Holland of Christchurch
attended to unveil a brass tablet,
in honour of Robert Chapman,
Thomas Hutchison and James
Page. He extended his sympathies
to the parents present, and
gave a “stirring address,” said the
correspondent.
“He stated that he knew what
it was to have lost a boy, he having
lost one in the great fight for
freedom, and therefore he could
tenderly sympathise with the
parents of the fallen ones.”
Later that same month, in
May, it was a happier occasion
when the bachelors of Springston
South staged their annual ball.
“The floor was taxed to its utmost,
and dancing was indulged
in until the early hours of the
morning to the excellent music
of Mr H Terry,” reported the
Ellesmere Guardian.
Later that year, a correspondent
for the newspaper was impressed
that, “with the exception
of a few pounds,” the hall was
free from debt.
“When it is remembered that
Springston South is but a small
district, and that their hall cost
1200 pounds, this achievement reflects
great credit on the residents
and shows they must have worked
well together and put plenty of
enthusiasm into the undertaking,”
the correspondent said.
Centennial celebrations will
begin with a meet and greet on
April 21 at 7pm. This will be
followed by dance and supper on
the evening of April 22, where
local five-piece dance band Algal
Bloom will play music from
the last 100 years. The official
centenial commemoration
will be April 23 at 1pm with a
dedication to fallen and returned
soldiers and flag raising, followed
by an opportunity to view
historical displays.
New Harcourts opens in Prebbleton
HERE TO HELP: Co-owner Penny Lovell opens the doors to the new Harcourts Four Seasons Prebbleton.
ANYBODY PASSING through
Prebbleton can see developments
happening in the real estate
market.
‘Happy to be here!’ says
the sign in the window of the
new Harcourts Four Seasons
Prebbleton.
Co-owner James Twiss
confirms the office will open this
week, following Easter.
The office has a prominent,
“second-to-none” location on
Springs Rd, to the right of the
bakery.
Twiss expects plenty of foot
traffic and encourages people to
drop in and say hello.
“Clients can expect to drop
into the office five days a week
and meet up with someone
happy to have a coffee, a chat and
discuss any real estate needs.”
Building relationships is a key
focus.
“Rather than an email, we’d
rather talk to the person and
see them face-to-face and spend
some time with them and get to
know what they need and want,”
says Twiss.
With a bakery next door, it’s a
great chance to chat over a coffee
and a bite to eat.
Says Twiss: “Clients can expect
the same great service but more
of a local understanding of the
marketplace.
“Staff have a detailed knowledge
of what’s occurring in the
marketplace, particularly since
it’s a growth market with plan
and zoning changes, and they
will be experts on the upcoming
plan changes.
“Our focus is to have local people
working in local offices, supporting
the local community.”
The company will have a staff
of about five, including Natalie
McLean, who lives in Prebbleton
with her family.
The well-known local Ransley
family are going to be wellrepresented.
Jaden Ransley
brings a strong, competitive
background in motorsport. He
will be joined by his mother,
Rana, a business owner who
brings her successful real estate
knowledge with her.
Twiss says Harcourts Four Seasons
Prebbleton will give locals a
good choice of real estate brands.
He says they are about providing
a service and opportunity for
locals and proving themselves
through results.
“The main commercial
developments in Prebbleton
have been put together well and
highlighted the need to have a
space there.”
Prebbleton was chosen as
high-quality homes are already
established, three plan changes
are in the works, and Prebbleton
is reasonably close to the city.
Twiss also says the Prebbleton
client base has a strong
Harcourts following, and with
existing offices in Rolleston and
Lincoln, the area is now wellcovered.
Harcourts Four Seasons has
over 100 salespeople over nine
locations specialising in providing
services to mostly rural
North Canterbury and Selwyn.
“We enjoy working with the
people and want to fit in with
the communities we work and
live in. So, we are here to do a
job well and be a big part of the
community,” Twiss says.
The Selwyn District Council and Waikirikiri Selwyn businesses have joined
forces to raise funds for the cyclone hit region with a charity auction on
Friday, 5 May.
The fundraiser will be part of a cocktail evening at Rossendale Winery with
donated items up for auction and the proceeds going to the Gisborne Mayoral
Relief Fund. This evening provides a fantastic opportunity to network with
other Selwyn businesses while supporting a great cause.
From horse-trekking and luxury accommodation stays at Lake Coleridge, to a
free business promotional photoshoot or taking to the sky with the Canterbury
Gliding Club, there will be a range of unique products and experiences on offer
for bidders.
Tairawhiti/Gisborne District Mayor Rehette Stoltz will share a video message,
updating guests on the flood recovery work, alongside Mayor Sam Broughton.
“It’s been fantastic to see the way Selwyn businesses are getting in behind
this event, with more signing up as we go. We’re looking forward to a really fun
night and raising money for a great cause. As a community we know first-hand
what a huge boost it is to have others supporting us in the long-haul recovery
from this disaster. Now it’s our turn and it’s good to see how generous and
creative Selwyn people have been in giving back and helping others,” Mayor
Sam says.
The auction event is the latest in a series of fundraisers throughout the
community to support the Tairawhiti Gisborne District, after Selwyn ‘adopted’
the community through the Local Government New Zealand
Adopt-a-Community programme, partnering communities to support
areas hardest hit by Cyclone Gabrielle.
Tairawhiti Gisborne experienced heavy damage from the cyclone, with a long
journey ahead to restore roads, bridges, power, and water infrastructure and to
help displaced residents back into their homes.
Other fundraisers have included a donation drive at Selwyn Sounds, a fire
brigade truck pull, and Selwyn schools pairing up with their counterparts
in Gisborne.
Help keep our drains flowing
With autumn here and wind and rain on the
way, drains can quickly become blocked with
leaves. You can help avoid flooding around
your property and street by removing any
leaves that are clogging drains. Council
contractors do regularly clear drains, but
leaves can quickly build up especially in
windy conditions at autumn time. So build
a leaf pile for the children, make mulch for
the garden or just enjoy some time out in the
fresh air helping out your street.
Community Recycling Days return
It’s time to clear up the backyard, shed and garage ready for winter —
community recycling and bulk waste drop-off days are returing to Ellesmere
and Malvern.
People will be able to drop off garden waste and items such as scrap metal,
The footballing
lifestyle – and
a taste for coffee
BIG FUTURE: Zoe McMeeken’s busy off-season will
include a New Zealand under-20 camp, playing for
the Phoenix Academy and possibly finding a cafe job.
Below – McMeeken gets away from a Canberra United
player in round 4 of the A-League.
• By Jaime Cunningham
FOR ZOE McMeeken, football is
a lifestyle. She lives and breathes
the sport everyday and struggles
to name anything she enjoys
more – except maybe coffee.
“I guess a hobby is drinking
coffee? Everyone knows I like it a
lot, I kind of have a caffeine addiction,”
she said.
The 19-year-old former
Lincoln High student is currently
taking a two-week break from
football following the end of the
Wellington Phoenix’s second
A-League season, which finished
with a 2-2 draw against the
Melbourne Victory a week ago.
McMeeken was the team’s
youngest squad member in their
inaugural season and started in
all but one of their games. She
was one of 13 players to sign on
for a second season with the club.
It was also the first season
the team could play their home
games at Wellington’s Sky
Stadium after the Covid-19
border restrictions prevented
any games being played outside
Australia last season.
“It was so much better. The
support from all the fans and
our families made such a great
atmosphere,” she said.
Although the Phoenix finished
at the bottom of the table for a
second year, McMeeken said
their draw, two wins and some
close losses over the last month
were promising signs going into
their third season.
“Compared to last year,
everyone in the team felt like we
were more competitive,” she said.
One of McMeeken’s highlights
was last month’s 1-0 win over
A-League leaders, Sydney FC on
March 11 – which also happened
to be her birthday.
“We beat Sydney, who are
one of the league’s top teams (in
Sydney), which was pretty cool.
It was such a good birthday,” she
said.
Over the last six months
McMeeken has been based in
Wellington.
“Moving to Wellington was
a big change, but I’m a lot more
used to it now.
“If my parents had a choice
they’d want me back here a lot
more though.”
The young fullback is staying
with her parents’ in Lincoln for
another week before travelling
to Auckland for an under-20
Football Ferns camp. After that,
it’s back to Wellington to play for
the Phoenix Academy until the
A-League re-starts in October.
Between her football duties,
she’s looking forward to watching
the Football Ferns play at home
in the FIFA Women’s World
Cup, which runs from July 20 to
August 20.
She hopes to play for the
Football Ferns one day. “I know
quite a lot of them playing now,
so I will definitely make my way
to the games,” she said.
Although she hasn’t extended
her contract with the Phoenix for
another year yet, McMeeken is
keen to continue playing in the
A-League.
“I’m planning to stay in the
A-League. I love all the coaches
and players at the Phoenix so
we’ll see.
“I just want to become more
of a consistent starter and make
a team over in Europe one
day,” McMeeken, who named
Barcelona’s Lucy Bronze as her
favourite player.
“The Women’s Super League
is growing so much and to see
(50,000 people) at one of the
games recently was just insane.”
She has come a long way
from playing for Halswell and
Selwyn United boys’ teams in her
younger years, which McMeeken
really enjoyed.
“A lot of my coaches
recommended playing with
boys,” she said.
“I really liked playing with
them because they really cared
for me but I quite enjoyed
tackling them too.”
McMeeken is hoping to be
selected for next year’s FIFA
Under-20 World Cup, although
the tournament venue and dates
are still to be confirmed.
In the meantime, McMeeken
will be searching for a job in
Wellington in the off-season
while she plays for the academy
team and finishes studying a
psychology course this semester.
“This year (the contract) was
enough to fund everything it
needed to,” she said.
And if McMeeken lands the
job she has in mind, it doesn’t
look like her coffee addiction will
be ending anytime soon: “It’ll
probably be something to help
with my social skills, like maybe
a cafe.”
From Broadfield to China for Baxter
FARAH PALMER Cup head
coach Blair Baxter will take up a
new role as assistant coach with
China’s women’s sevens team.
China is seeking to qualify for
next year’s Olympics and hope
Baxter will help them get there.
“Definitely some nerves
heading into this opportunity.
However, with that comes
growth,” the Broadfield resident
said.
“There was a chance here to be
a full-time coach, get my hands
dirty, and work on the technical
and tactical aspects that’s going
to help me be a better coach
long-term. My main motivation
is a chance to grow. It’s so far
removed from what I know.
The language barrier and a
completely different culture
will force me to become a better
coach.”
Baxter has coached the
Canterbury FPC side for the last
three years, leading the team to
three home finals and two titles.
He was Matatū head coach
when they secured a last minute
31-33 victory over Chiefs
Manawa to win the Super Rugby
Aupiki title on March 25. “I was
lucky to get the opportunity
with FPC three years ago.
“It’s provided me exponential
growth as a person and coach.
“Women’s rugby is a fantastic
area of our game to be involved
in. Everyone is there for the
right reasons and wants the
best and I’ve been lucky to work
with amazing individuals who
consistently drive to be the best
they can be.”
The shift to a full-time role
with China is the next step in
a coaching pathway that saw
Baxter start at Belfast before
spending seven years coaching
the Sydenham colts and
premiers.
He coached the Cantabrians,
Canterbury B, metro and the
under-19’s before coaching the
FPC side.
The vacant FPC head coach
role will be addressed in the
coming weeks, a Canterbury
Rugby spokesman said.

FIREARMS LICENCE HOLDERS
THINGS YOU NEED
TO KNOW BEFORE
‘THE ROAR’AND
GAME BIRD SEASON
Information from Te Tari Pūreke - Firearms Safety Authority
If you’re a firearms licence holder, you’ll need
to know about changes to the storage and
transport rules for firearms and ammunition,
and changes to the seven rules of firearms
safety.
Regulations were updated in February 2022,
and to help Kiwis make sense of those
changes, Te Tari Pūreke, the new firearms
regulator, published a Secure Storage and
Transport Guide.
You can download a copy of the Secure
Storage and Transport Guide from www.
firearmssafetyauthority.govt.nz/firearms-safety
Storage and transport for firearms and ammunition, key points
Transportation
If you’re driving to a hunting location, your
firearm needs to be inoperable during your
travel and, ideally, concealed from view. This
means removing the bolt or an essential part
(or if that’s not possible, applying a trigger or
cable lock), or transporting the firearm in a
locked carry case.
The ammunition needs to be separately and
securely stored in a locked glove box or similar
storage area, if practical.
And please, whatever you do, once you’ve
finished using your firearm, lock it away. Never
leave any firearms in your ute, shed, home or
vehicle unsecured at any time.
The only exceptions to the firearms and
ammunition transport rules are if you’re
using the firearm on a farm for farm-related
activities, or you’re doing legally-authorised
hunting or pest control (such as a regional
council employed pest controller) and the
licence holder is in the
vehicle or the immediately
vicinity of the vehicle with
the firearms in it.
Make sure you read or
download a free copy
of the storage and
transport guide to keep
up to date with the
details of the changes:
www.firearmssafetyauthority.
govt.nz/firearms-safety/storagetransportation
Ammunition
All ammunition must now be stored in
a locked container. You can now only
store ammunition with firearms in a
gun safe that has a separate lockable
compartment with a different key than
the key for the gun safe. You must
keep these keys separate.
If your safe doesn’t have a separate lockable
compartment, you need to store ammunition
in its own secure storage container with a key,
combination, or padlock, or in a stout locked
cupboard.
Taking a break when you’re travelling
with firearms
For those who travel with firearms to hunt
locations, your inoperable and secured firearm
can be left in your vehicle unattended, for
example during a break in a journey, for up to
60 minutes. But you need to lock your vehicle
and stay within the immediate area or vicinity
of the vehicle and meet other conditions.
Read the storage and transport guide for full
details: www.firearmssafetyauthority.govt.nz/
firearms-safety/storage-transportation.
Under no circumstances can firearms,
ammunition or other arms items be left
in a vehicle overnight.
Firearms Registry
We want to enable the legitimate use of firearms
for feeding our whānau, conservation, farming
and recreation while keeping our communities
safe. This involves making sure firearms licence
holders are fit and proper to possess firearms
and are meeting the obligations of their licence.
New Zealand will have a firearms registry from
24 June 2023. The Registry is one of the ways we
are strengthening how firearms are managed in
New Zealand.

WINDFALL: Harvest ripe feijoas regularly from the ground. PHOTO: DALTONS
Time to harvest
feijoas, kiwifruit
Autumn is now arriving with
many deciduous trees displaying
beautifully coloured leaves. In
preparation for winter, there are
many tasks for the home garden
inside and out
Vegetable garden
With the ongoing increases in vegetable
prices, having a home vegetable patch
has become even more crucial. Make
the most of whatever space you have.
Think creatively and consider growing in
containers, in vertical gardens, or even
hanging baskets – you will be surprised at
the array of veges that can be grown like
this – particularly dwarf varieties.
Plants growing in containers are in a
confined space and are reliant on the mix
you use, so always choose a good quality
potting mix.
For traditional gardens, what you put in
is what you get out, so soil preparation is
absolutely vital. Incorporate a mixture of
fresh Garden Time compost and vegetable
mix to all areas that will be planted.
Remember to rotate crops to different
parts of the garden, from where they were
growing last winter.
New seeds and/or seedlings to be planted
in April include peas, radish, silver
beet, spinach, swedes, and turnips.
Flowering annuals
Time to prepare and plant winter flower
beds. As with the vegetable garden, incorporate
fresh compost along with Garden
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Time enriched garden mix into the existing
soil prior to planting.
To add colour to outdoor areas over the
cooler months, plant winter annual’s seedlings
in containers, large pots or hanging
baskets now. Position them where you will
see them regularly such as on decks or in
entrance ways.
Winter flowering annuals include alyssum,
calendulas, cineraria, cornflower,
lobelia, nemesias, lupins (South Island
only), snapdragons, stock, sweet william,
pansy, primulas, and violas.
Fruit harvesting and pruning
Time to harvest late-season apples. Feijoas
are now ripe and its best to regularly collect
fruit from the ground and not pick it
off the tree.
Kiwifruit can now be picked and
although they may still be hard, they will
ripen after being harvested.
Early in April the last of the passionfruit
will fall to the ground. The vines can be
given a tidy up prune before winter arrives.
Stone fruit, peaches, plums, and nectarines
can be pruned and then sprayed with
copper oxychloride to help protect them
against bacterial diseases.
Add a good layer of mulch to help
insulate the soil around the trees’ roots,
keeping them warm and protected during
the cold winter months.
Leaf murder mystery
Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology
(insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces
a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His
column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the
variety of living things around us. Check out the full list
of invertebrates found at www.inaturalist.org/projects/
I LOVE a whodunnit, but not the normal
murder mystery type that usually comes
to mind.
As an entomologist you often get damaged
leaves thrust upon you and asked
whodunnit. Peter, a work colleague,
recently approached me with a pumpkin
leaf wanting to know what was causing
the damage.
Sometimes leaves have eggs, immatures,
adult insects, or old exoskeletons (exuviae),
which can be easily identified. Often
the damaged leaf is the only clue you have,
although the type of foraging can indicate
if the pest is a sucking, chewing, rasping
or leaf mining species.
Fortunately, entomologists have compiled
a comprehensive list of insects and
host plants that also helps to narrow down
culprits. I recently found several clematis
seedlings with characteristic leaf mines on
the leaves.
Mines are where small larvae travel
under the leaf surface, creating an obvious
trail where they have fed. Some leaf
mining species have characteristic zig-zag
patterns, while others look quite random.
The clematis mines were the random
type and literature lead me to the leaf
mining fly Phytomyza clematadi. This is
an endemic fly about 3mm long. Females
lay a single egg into a leaf and as the larva
grows and moves through the leaf, the
mine width increases with its three larval
stages (instars).
Larvae reach 3mm in length before
forming a hard and brown puparium that
have a pair of breathing organs called
stigma at each end that pierce the leaf
surface.
Adults emerge by breaking through the
leaf to eventually fly off and find a mate.
I have placed some fine mesh bags over
the leaves to try to catch some of the
emerging flies to confirm their identity.
Back to Peter’s pumpkin eater – that
mystery remains unsolved.
[Edition datE]
Fix those
minor defects
Start out front, cleaning, clearing and
decluttering the yard to make a good
impression on buyers.
It’s a rare house that doesn’t have
defects. Even newly renovated ones can
have features that detract for buyers.
But there are ways for sellers to deflect
attention from them without pretending
they’re not there. The three main ways of
dealing with defects are:
1. Fix them.
2. Draw the eye away from them.
3. Use them as a selling point.
Simple defects can be fixed easily. Start
out front. Overgrown bushes can be
trimmed, or replaced with a few matching
plants, old fences and front doors can be
painted or stained, and the paths cleaned.
Do this even if a property is a do-up.
You want to give the impression that
buyers can move into the house and chip
away at the work in their own time
If you have time and money, paint sills
and eaves using accents.
Inside, the first thing buyers see is the
hallway, which can be brightened up with
a lick of paint. The neutral paint trick can
also be used to paint over dated wallpaper,
completely changing the look and feel of a
tired house.
Bathrooms and kitchens are important
to buyers, and the eye settles on vanities
and benches. These can be resurfaced
relatively quickly to give a modern look.
If the seller can’t repaint or tile the
bathroom bring in high quality matching
towels, which become a feature in the
room and draw the eye from the less than
desirable walls and features. Nice vases
and flowers will do the same.
Replacing handles and knobs to draw
attention away from the units themselves.
This reduces the number of “I have to do
this” thoughts in potential buyers’ minds.
Drawing the eye away from a multitude
of sins is exactly the thing to do.
If you see an empty house the eye
always goes to marks on the carpet
and walls and this will lower the price
expectation.”
Drawing the eye to the furniture and
furnishings, creates better flow, and de
cluttering makes buyers feel the home
would be a nice place to live in.
The other way to handle the property’s
defects is to raise them with the buyer
before they see them.
If the carpet is bad, for example, you
can say: “Hey, they were going to replace
the carpet but they decided to leave it to
you to choose a new carpet and priced it
accordingly.”
Finally, good old fashioned elbow grease
is essential in all properties to remove
those sins that are simply cleanable.
Home heating –
electricity, gas or wood?
How you heat your home depends on a
number of factors. Figuring out the best
way to heat your home continues to be a
matter for debate.
Several things are undisputed. A
warm, dry home is essential for
comfort and good health, good
insulation dramatically increases
the efficiency of any heating
system and ventilation is an
important consideration.
Most homes are
heated by electricity,
gas, or wood. In
New Zealand,
heating accounts
for approximately
30 percent of a
home’s annual energy
consumption. There are many
things you can do to reduce
consumption and cost.
The World Health Organisation
recommends a temperature of 18 deg C
for indoor living areas, and slightly less for
bedrooms. It recommends slightly higher
temperatures for vulnerable people – the
elderly and small children. Studies have
shown that indoor temperatures below 12
degrees can disrupt sleep.
Among all these considerations, how
you heat your home is a matter of personal
choice, with many options available.
Heat pumps are generally the most
common and cost-effective form of home
heating in New Zealand. Used properly,
they heat quickly and are convenient.
However, you need to have the right sized
unit for the area and they don’t work when
electricity is not available. They tend to be
room-specific but ducted heat pumps are
becoming more popular and are costeffective,
especially in new builds, but can
also be installed into established homes.
Modern wood burners may be the
closest you can get to an open-fire feel, but
are much more efficient. Wood is generally
a renewable fuel, and if you have a cheap
or free supply, a wood burner may be
the least expensive heating option. They
heat large areas and are not dependent
on electricity but there is the chopping
and stacking to be done, flues need to be
cleaned regularly and older models can
contribute to air pollution and may violate
strict air quality regulations – www.mfe.
govt.nz has detailed information regarding
this.
Pellet fires are typically more efficient
than wood burners but can have a smaller
output. They require electricity but
some have a battery backup and they are
thermostatically controlled with timers.
These must comply with regulations which
are also detailed on the Ministry for the
Environment website.
Gas heating is common and convenient.
Central heating systems can be zone
controlled and provide warm air
circulation. Flued gas heaters are best, as
unflued and portable gas heaters produce
lots of moisture and emit pollutants that
can be unsafe. Flued gas heating systems
can be installed in most homes. They are
fast heating and are relatively inexpensive
to run. However gas is not a renewable
resource and prices can vary widely.
The greatest source of energy is actually
free. Harnessing the sun can dramatically
reduce heating costs and is the most
environmentally friendly way to heat your
home. Passive heating combines insulation
with good design, accomplished more
effectively in new builds but also able to be
incorporated into existing homes.
Getting the sun’s warmth into your
home is a function of the design; keeping
it in is a function of the insulation. There
is a wealth of information online as passive
heating becomes normative in the design
and building industry.
Websites such as energywise.govt.
nz and smarterhomes.org.nz have
comprehensive information on and tips
for, heating your home in the colder
months.
A happy healthy home
More than ever, we now require our
homes to be a sanctuary - a primate haven
where the cares and pressures of the world
do not intrude. The home should be an
enveloping, warm and creative environment
where family members of all ages feel
relaxed and safe.
The longer you live in your home, the
more likely you are to feel in sync with it.
As the seasons come and go you’ll have
got to know which rooms are sunny and
which ones need brightening.
You’ll have noted areas prone to damp.
You’ll have observed where different family
members like to spend their time and why.
You might have come to the conclusion
that major changes are required to make
your home as healthy as possible, or perhaps
you’ve concluded that a few simple tweaks
will do the trick. Either way, good planning
is essential, so take your time, write lots of
lists and do your research thoroughly.
MATERIALS
The ‘make-do-and-mend’ culture
that has grown during the recession
places emphasis on the satisfaction that
can be found in incorporating natural
materials with vintage items. Pieces of
driftwood, collections of shells, that lovely
moss-covered garden bench or a ‘cleverly’
revived piece of furniture all have their place
in the healthy home and its surroundings.
This trend steers away from plastics and
synthetic materials.
HEATING AND VENTILATION
A home needs to be cool in summer,
with plenty of natural ventilation, and
warm in winter. Traditional open fires are
being phased out and home owners are
discovering the joys of installing modern
wood burners, using gas for heating or
installing a heat pump. All these options are
healthy - technology has come a long way
and most choices will see you saving money
in the long run.
STORAGE
While a minimalist style might be fine for
single people or couples without kids, when
the patter of tiny feet comes along, good
storage is going to be vital at every stage of
a child’s life - be they babies or teens - they
come with clutter. The more you can contain
that clutter the better in terms of both your
mental health and general safety.
There are any number of options available,
from professionally designed cupboards
and wardrobes, to the simple lidded plastic
boxes you can buy at chain stores. While
some people claim they thrive in a messy
environment. I know from experience that a
lovely, orderly home is good for the soul.
COLOUR
Choosing the
right colours
for your home
can make a big
difference. Small,
dark rooms
can be opened
up and made
brighter simply
by choosing the
right paint. If
you can afford an
interior designer
or colour
consultant to
help, I do advise
it. Today’s
homes tend to
be more open
plan, so choose a palette of two or three
basic colours and use them throughout to
achieve cohesion and harmony.
SELLING YOUR HOME?
Potential buyers are
likely to be living in your
neighbourhood, it’s an
area that they already love
and are actively seeking
to stay in. That’s why it
makes sense to advertise
your property in the
Selwyn Property Guide.
Marketing your property
– what does it mean?
Marketing a property is
more than presentation
and advertising.
Conceptually, marketing is
identifying what prospective buyers
are looking for then providing this. For
example, larger homes and sections
may appeal more to families. Young
couples starting out, generally have
tight budgets leading them to smaller
properties, while older people may be
looking to downsize.
Brand new has a particular appeal
however there will always be a market
for established homes. Having a
picture in your mind of the type of
buyer will help in determining the
features to emphasise.
If repairs and maintenance need
to be carried out before putting the
property on the market, seek the
advice of a real estate agent. They
can advise on what tasks are worth
completing and what might be
unnecessary expense.
Installing a new kitchen or changing
the carpet may lift the house but will
the expense be recouped in the sale
price? On the other hand, modernising
an outdated kitchen or bathroom
could make a huge difference to
the look of the place. Avoid going
overboard unless the capital value of
properties in the area justifies this.
Real estate agents are in contact with
prospective buyers so aware of what
they are looking for. Draw on their
expertise and advice to help make the
most of the selling opportunity.
Establishing a relevant and fair price
for a property is important. Most
agents calculate this based on the price
properties in the area have sold for,
and what a particular property has to
offer. A unique or exceptional property
may justify a higher price, though
run-down properties can gain more
than they appear to merit. This might
be due to the area or other factors that
suggest a good investment.
When promoting a property, mix it
up and be creative so your property
stands out from the rest. TradeMe
is a must; checked by most people
looking to buy. Present the features the
property offers as benefits to potential
buyers.
Erect a sign outside the property.
People stop and look at photographs
and this might spark sufficient
interest for them to visit an open
home. Spending a fortune on massive
advertising campaigns in every media
might seem a way to attract potential
buyers but may be an unnecessary
expense without the return. A better
philosophy could be a little often.
This will depend on the value of the
property, your budget and how best to
reach target buyers.
Buyer perception is also significant.
For example, properties that sit for a
while can become stale. Resting the
property by taking it off the market for
a short time, then relisting perhaps in
spring or when sales in the area appear
to lift a little, can make a difference.
However, if a property does not sell
immediately there is no need for panic
or dropping the price. It may simply be
that the right buyer has not yet come
along. If the mix is right your property
will sell.
If a property does not sell
immediately there is no need for
panic or dropping the price.

Your guide to all things Real Estate
in the Selwyn District
Bathroom trends in 2023
Bathrooms are becoming a haven of comfort
and wellness, and design trends in 2023
continue to be about natural colours but with a
focus on personal taste. There are several ways
to accomplish a bathroom space where your
well-being is at the forefront.
Showers and tubs
Showers generally appear more popular
than baths this year, and some people
are removing tubs to gain space in the
bathroom. Shower accessibility can be
improved by installing a zero-entry shower
with no curb or surrounding edge. You
can encourage a relaxing experience by
including a shower seat and multiple
showerheads, while a glass shower
enclosure can add your style by finishing
it with beautiful wall tiles. However, a
freestanding tub can be a focal point in the
bathroom while offering you the chance of
a restorative long-hot soak after a hard day.
Spa Impressions
Taking care of yourself and having a
relaxing and calming space is an important
bathroom trend. Create a spa-like
experience by having natural and subtle but
decorative lighting, luxurious finishes, soft
colours, plants and open shelving to store
towels and bathroom amenities that can
provide the ambience of a spa.
Vanities
Although white has been a popular and
ongoing trend in bathrooms, 2023 is seeing
more natural finishes incorporated. Wood
is back! Wood is touted as the material for
cabinets and vanities to achieve a warm
and inviting bathroom. Another factor
for your bathroom is being eco-friendly
and sustainable. Perhaps think of using
reclaimed wood furniture and turn it into
a vanity or use natural rattan for storage
baskets.
Accents and Colour
Some bathroom designs look to bold
patterns and layering for texture and colour.
Colour trends range from blue and green
to warm peach and beige and neutral greys.
All-white bathrooms or lighter tones are
calming, but adding accents like wood
mirrors and wicker baskets will provide
contrast and a connection to the natural
world. For more interest and creativity,
textured and decorative tiles, larger-size
tiles, and tiles made from natural products
are popular. For example, the terrazzo style
can introduce patterns to your bathroom
walls. It is a composite material made with
chips of marble, quartz, granite, glass or
other materials combined with a binder.
Often bathrooms have a mix and match of
colours and patterns incorporated into the
design.
Fixtures and fittings
Brass and gold fixtures and fittings add a
touch of class and luxury to the bathroom,
while black fixtures contrast nicely with
white or timber finishes.
By adding a mix of finishes, colours,
patterns and styles, you can achieve a
space that functions as it needs to but also
reflects your own style and provides an area
promoting and enhancing your well-being.
