Shakespeare gives us famous lines about life

being like theatre. We found the appeal of a

theatre in the round, a circus, an easy transition

to this idea. Circus and the opening parade is a

pageant and some of the acts of the circus

symbolising key actions in A Midsummer Night’s

Dream (AMND) became irresistible.

The idea that love makes fools (jesters,

comedians) out of us lends itself very well to

circus clowns hence our ideas of the lovers as

Whiteface clowns and the Mechanicals as

Character clowns that become Auguste in the

play within the play.

Having a smaller cast of 14 young thespians we

wanted a more intimate space for our Academy

Production so we returned once more to the

invaluable H.J. Zhang Black Box Theatre, which

allows a more versatile arrangement of

audience and actors.

It is a privilege to have worked with the creative

team of Keren Chaukria, Sarah Wun, our

visionary Head of Faculty, Alex Campion, Felicity

Donnoli, and our chief conjuror, Carl Mok.

We are also grateful to Craig Fullerton and the

Music Department for helping us with the

talented musicians who accompany our

'dreams'.

Shakespeare gives a gift of a famous canonical

characters to all the cast and creatives and in the

end, after this show is gone, I hope they enjoy

conversations, and shared memories with

people who have played their parts - across the

world.

No matter what we love - Theatre, another

person, a pet, our jobs we all end up being

Love’s Fool. And isn’t it wonderful?

Enjoy our Circus Midsummer Nights Dream!

STORY

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

By William Shakespeare

仲 夏 夜 之 夢

編 劇 : 莎 士 比 亞

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is the Academy’s

first Shakespearean production.

The warrior heroes Hippolyta and Theseus are

about to marry. Meanwhile young lord Lysander

wants to court Hermia but Hermia’s father,

Egeus, disapproves of this relationship and their

young lives are threatened. Hermia and

Lysander plan their escape into the forest.

Joining them is unhappy Helena rejected by her

ex boyfriend, Demetrius.

Also in the Forest is a band of workers (‘the

mechanicals’) They love theatre and are

rehearsing a performance for Theseus and

Hippolyta’s wedding day. Then the fairies step

in… Who will love who? Will the play go on?

Shakespeare looks fondly at different types of

love and how love makes fools of us all. These

young actors bring all this to life for you as we

reinterpret the play through the world of the

Circus.

CAST

Mathea has been acting since the age of seven and is an avid enthusiast of all

things theater. She has participated in several Academy Productions, including

2018's Just So, 2019's Arts Carousel, 2022's Bugsy Malone, and of course,

2023's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Her favorite role so far was probably

playing Detective Smolsky in last year's canceled production of Bugsy Malone.

Mathea's favorite part of being in the Academy Productions is the highly skilled,

professional cast that she gets to work with and befriend, and the tightly-knit

community ISF's theater productions creates within the school.

PUCK

A passionate youth actor, Candace Lee has been acting since the tender age of

8. (Fun fact: when she was young, Candace got pushed into drama classes as

she was too ridiculously shy. Little did she know, because of that, she fell in love

with acting, and it became a core part of who she is today!) Through the years,

Candace has starred in a multitude of productions, entertaining audiences as

JoJo in Seussical Jr, Matilda in Matilda, Martha in The Sound of Music, Alma Hix

in The Music Man, Grace Farrell in Annie Jr, to name a few. Most recently, she

will also be enacting as Beck in a thrilling upcoming series. Candace states that

what she loves most about being in the Academy Production is the feeling of

being a part of a community of passionate, amazing, like-minded individuals,

and in a sense, a special little family. A Midsummer Night's Dream is Candace’s

debut performance for The Academy Production.

Alivia has little acting experience and has taken several Faust Theatre's

workshops as a child. She has not been a part of any productions in the past, yet

is passionate about the arts and hopes this year's Academy Production can

provide insight in both acting and about components of a production for her

studies and her future careers. Alivia says her favorite part of being in the

Academy Production is being able to be a part of a team working toward the

same goal; being able to work on character development with her lovely

mentors; lastly, stepping out of her comfort zone in terms of performing and

taking on unfamiliar roles. This is Alivia’s debut performance for The Academy

Production and hopes you enjoy the performance!
