Health & Beauty
New EMERALD Laser
experience now available in
Shropshire at The Medispa
in Priorslee, Telford.
The EMERALD LASER is a non-invasive and non thermal
fat loss laser that works in tune with your body. It is the
only technology in the world that has been given US FDA
market clearance for overall body circumference
reduction in patients +30 BMI.
The laser works as a natural alternative for fat loss by
using non-thermal low-level lasers to create a temporary
pore in the fat cells, allowing the fatty liquids to seep out
of the cell and be naturally flushed out through your
lymphatic system.
IS IT SAFE?
Very safe. Emerald has been rigorously tested and is
FDA-approved – One of the hardest certificates to obtain
in the scientific industry.
However, although the technology is very safe, it is not
suitable for people with certain medical conditions. If you
have had liver or kidney failure, heart disease, or if you
wear a pacemaker, Emerald will not be suitable for you.
It is also not possible to treat pregnant or lactating
women with the technology.
We carry out a full medical assessment before starting
your treatment, so if you are not a suitable candidate, we
will find out before your programme begins.
The Emerald Laser can be used to treat several
different body areas. Please examine the image below for
the possible treatment options:
Emerald uses 10 x 532nm true green laser beams
(monochromatic, collimated, and coherent) to create
small transitory pores for the fatty liquids in fat cells to
seep out. The fatty liquids are then naturally flushed out
through your lymphatic system.
The result is that the fat cells shrink instead of being
killed. When this happens, the shrunken fat cells begin to
act and function like healthy lean cells, releasing the
correct messages to the brain and creating a
communication effect throughout the fat organ, causing
other fat cells to release their content and return their
hormone responses to the positive.
Procedures that have been popular in the past (such as fat
freezing) focus on the elimination of fat cells, but recent
research has shown this approach to be ineffective, and in
the worst-case scenario, providing counterproductive
results as the fat may regenerate in other parts of the
body, or worse, around your organs.
The Emerald Laser effectively trains fat cells to behave
and react differently, and all without excessive heat or
cooling.
Visualisation of the fat cells shrinking
BEFORE
AFTER
The treatment with Emerald is quick and you can
immediately return to normal daily activities after the
treatment.
You simply lie under the laser on your front for
15 minutes and then your back for 15 minutes.
It's that easy!
Use your own fat to get your health back by preserving
the endocrine function of your cell unlike most other
technologies in the market. Look great on outside, but
also feel great on the inside as well.
Demolition due to start on Riverside Shopping
Centre in Shrewsbury
Demolition is due to begin on the former medical practice and
Riverside Shopping Centre in Shrewsbury town centre.
Part of the Smithfield Riverside scheme, the plans intend to redevelop
the area of Shrewsbury with a park, play equipment and
events and performance area.
Shropshire Council have said they hope to minimise the disruption
to the town centre as much as possible during the demolition.
Four Eurasian Lynx move into a new enclosure
at Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World in Telford
Shropshire residents stunned by Northern
Lights display in June
Residents across Shropshire were stunned as the Northern Lights
put on a gorgeous show back in June.
Taking full advantage of the early warnings of the potential
appearance, residents made the most of the appearance of the aurora
borealis by heading outdoors to top viewing points and even their
ardens to catch a glimpse.
The stunning display of lights first were visible in Shropshire at
around 10.30pm on Friday 10th May as just a faint sight of purple
and green in the sky though by 11.30pm spectators were reporting
seeing them across the county.
Prior to May’s scenes, the last time an extreme geomagnetic storm
hit Earth was in 2003 making the viewing very rare across the West
Gymnast Alice Kinsella in Telford to compete
in Paris
Alice Kinsella, aged 23, has been selected to represent Team GB at
the Summer Olympics in Paris this year.
This will be Kinsella’s second successive Olympics after assisting
Team GB to win the bronze medal in the final during the debut
games in Tokyo back in 2021.
The 23-year-old gymnast will
be joined by Becky Downie
and Olympic debutants,
Ruby Evans, Georgia-Mae
Fenton and Abi Martin
Kinsella has discussed the
news on Instagram, writing
“it’s an absolute honour to be
representing Team GB at this year’s
Olympics in Paris” before thanking fans for being a part of her
sporting journey.
Four brother Eurasian Lynx, Cain, Lucifer, Amenadiel and Zadkiel
have moved to a new woodland enclosure at local zoo in Telford.
The brothers were born at Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World two years
ago. The Eurasian Lynx was once native to the UK but became
extinct around 1,300 years ago, the Zoo said, due to a decline of
their prey, habitat loss and human persecution.
The Zoo owner, Will Dorrell said ““our four lynx brothers are
ambassadors for their species and are a stark reminder that if we
don’t take conservation seriously, then we will lose some of the
world’s most amazing creatures.”
New Principal announced at City of
A college in Wolverhampton, recently freed from government
intervention is soon set to change Principal.
The City of Wolverhampton College’s Deputy Principal, Louise Fall, is
due to take over from organisation leader, Mall Cowgill this summer.
The announcement has come shortly after the college left the
longest-running intervention in the sector after a long twelve years.
Louise Fall has worked at the college since 2014 and has said she is
“absolutely delighted” to be appointed Principal and plans to
continue developing educational courses that meet the local
Cocktail drinks have been
around for many, many
decades. These alcoholic
(and non-alcoholic) drinks
can be mixed, using spirits,
plus other ingredients and
carry on, to gain in
popularity, as time
progresses. Certainly,
cocktail concoctions are
hugely popular indeed, with
countless lovers of this type
of beverage. Regular
choices include Mojito,
Negroni and Pina Colada,
plus Cosmopolitan, Old
Fashioned, Spritz and
several others. Premium
quality cocktails are now
available in bottles, ready to
be served.
flavourings, this (to me) is perfect,
when garnished with a slice of fresh
orange (my choice) and lovingly
poured over ice.
COCKTAIL (17.5% vol
I found to be most tastefully sweet
and also bitter. Absolutely,
Tanqueray is a classic London Dry
Gin. This is mixed with herbal and
fruity vermouth flavourings, plus a
hint of tangy bitter, to create a
highly popular cocktail mix. Great to
pour over ice and then garnish with
a slice of fresh orange (my choice).
bottled cocktails at Waitrose, in
their attractively labelled ‘Cocktail
Collection’ range. Waitrose stores
always have most excellent in-store
advice, I have found on many
occasions. Their shelves, of all types
of beverages, are a ‘treat to behold’
and will take some time (and
enjoyment) to ‘explore’. Take time
and a lot of pleasure to locate your
favourite choices of drinks. The
excellent website has all details and
information and is most worthy of
viewing. Ordering online is easy too.
www.waitrose.com
(20.5% vol)
Is a very firm favourite amongst
numerous devotees of cocktails. This
delectation is sweet and nicely
warming. Utilising the wellrenowned
Johnnie Walker Blended
Scotch Whisky, which is expertly
mixed with orange notes, plus bitter
COCKTAIL (17.5% vol)
If I may suggest, could satisfy the
vodka enthusiasts, totally. This
elegant cocktail is mixed with
bittersweet cranberry juice and then
very well ‘balanced’ with orange and
lime flavours Very much appreciated
and loved amongst connoisseurs of
this type of beverage, I found it ideal
when served in a martini-style glass,
with a twist of lemon to garnish, if
you wish.
I located these expertly-blended,
premium pre-mixed, ready to serve
As always, Enjoy!
Summer Sizzling: Top Tips
For The Perfect BBQ This
Summer
There's something delightful about
a well-executed barbeque during
the summer.
The aroma of sizzling meats, the
laughter of friends and family, and
the joy of dining outdoors create
an experience that is both
comforting and exhilarating.
If you’re looking to elevate your
next BBQ and make sure its
memorable for all the right
reasons, have a read of our BBQ
top tips!
Choose the Right BBQ For You
The foundation of a great BBQ starts with the right grill.
Whether you prefer gas, charcoal, or electric, each type
offers unique advantages.
Charcoal grills are favoured for their authentic smoky
flavour, while gas grills offer convenience and control
over the temperature. Electric grills are ideal for small
spaces and are easy to use.
Whatever option you decide, always make sure your grill
is clean and in good working order before you start.
or citrus juice), oil, and seasonings. Marinate your
meats for at least a few hours, or overnight for the best
results.
Dry rubs, on the other hand, are a mix of herbs and
spices that you rub directly onto the meat. Experiment
with different combinations to find your signature
flavour that will leave your guests stunned.
Temperature Control
Cooking meat to the perfect temperature is crucial.
Invest in a good meat thermometer to avoid
undercooking or overcooking.
For steak, aim for 54°C for medium-rare or 60°C for
medium. Chicken should reach an internal temperature
of 74°C, and pork is best at 63°C.
Remember to let your meat rest for a few minutes before
serving to retain its juices.
Prep Your Ingredients In Advance
Preparation is vital to a smooth BBQ experience.
Chop vegetables, mix sauces, and marinate meats ahead
of time. This not only reduces stress but also allows you
to spend more time with your guests.
Also be sure to organise your grilling area with all the
tools and ingredients you’ll need within arm’s reach.
Don’t Forget The Veggies
Grilled vegetables can be just as delightful as meats.
Popular choices include bell peppers, zucchini,
mushrooms, and corn on the cob. Lightly coat your
veggies in olive oil and season them with salt and pepper
before grilling.
For a creative twist, try grilling fruit like pineapple or
peaches for a sweet addition to your BBQ experience.
Safety First
Safety is paramount when you’re hosting a BBQ.
Keep a spray bottle of water nearby to manage flare-ups
and a fire extinguisher on hand just in case. Ensure your
grill is positioned away from any flammable objects and
never leave it unattended.
Create a Comfortable Atmosphere
The right atmosphere can really make your BBQ so
much more enjoyable.
Comfortable seating, adequate lighting, and some
background music can set the perfect mood. Consider
string lights or lanterns for evening gatherings and have
blankets available for if it gets chilly.
Finish with a Sweet Treat
End your BBQ on a high note with a sweet treat.
Perfect Your Marinades and Rubs
Marinades and rubs are essential for adding flavour to
your meats.
A good marinade typically contains an acid (like vinegar
Grilled desserts like s'mores, grilled peaches with ice
cream, or even a simple fruit platter can provide a
delightful conclusion to your meal.
Happy grilling!
Health & Beauty
Stay Healthy This Summer:
Top Health and Wellness
Home Remedies
As the summer sun beckons, many
of us look forward to beach days,
barbeques, and outdoor
adventures.
However, with the rising
temperatures come various health
and wellness challenges for us all
to face.
Fortunately, nature provides an
array of remedies that can keep us
cool, refreshed, and in optimal
health over the summer months.
Here are some of the best home
remedies to embrace for a
healthier and more enjoyable
summer.
Infused Water
Staying hydrated is vital during the summer season.
Plain water is excellent, but infused water can make
hydration more enticing. Add slices of cucumber, lemon,
and mint to your water jug to not only provide a
refreshing flavour but also for additional benefits.
Cucumber is both hydrating and anti-inflammatory,
lemon detoxifies, and mint aids digestion. Be sure to
drink throughout the day to stay cool and hydrated.
Aloe Vera
Despite the best sun cream efforts, sunburns can happen
especially for those exposed during peak times of the
day.
Aloe vera is a natural and effective remedy for aiding the
effects. The gel from an aloe vera plant has cooling
properties and is known for its healing benefits. Apply
the gel directly to the sunburnt area to reduce redness
and pain. Aloe vera also helps in moisturising the skin,
preventing peeling, and speeding up the healing process.
Peppermint Tea
Peppermint tea can be a versatile ally against summer
heat.
Brew a pot of peppermint tea, let it cool, and then soak a
cloth in the tea, apply this compress to your forehead or
the back of your neck. Peppermint contains menthol,
which has a natural cooling effect, providing immediate
relief from heat and helping to reduce headaches caused
by sun exposure.
Essential Oils
Summer evenings often bring out those pesky insects
that tend to leave us with lumps and bites over the
summer.
Instead of using chemical-laden repellents, opt for
natural essential oils. Oils like citronella, eucalyptus,
and lavender are effective at keeping bugs at bay.
Mix a few drops of these oils with a carrier oil, such as
coconut oil, and apply to your skin. Alternatively, you
can diffuse these oils in your home or outdoor spaces to
create a bug-free zone.
Ginger and Lemon Tea
Summer indulgences can sometimes lead to digestive
discomfort.
Ginger and lemon tea is a fantastic remedy for this.
Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and can soothe
the digestive system, while lemon is detoxifying and
provides a burst of vitamin C.
Boil a few slices of fresh ginger in water, add a squeeze
of lemon, and drink this tea to ease bloating and
promote healthy digestion.
Epsom Salt Soak
Long days of summer activities can leave your feet tired
and sore.
An Epsom salt soak can provide much-needed relief. Fill
a bath with warm water, add a cup of Epsom salt, and
soak your feet for 15-20 minutes.
Epsom salt contains magnesium, which can help reduce
inflammation and ease muscle pain. This soak also helps
to soften the skin, making it easier to remove any
calluses.
Rose Water
Keep your skin hydrated and refreshed with a
homemade rose water mist.
Rose water has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant
properties, making it an excellent choice for summer
skin care.
Fill a spray bottle with rose water and carry it with you.
Spritz your face throughout the day to cool down and
revitalise your skin.
Elderberry Syrup
Summer colds can be quite bothersome.
Boost your immunity with elderberry syrup, known for
its antiviral and immune-boosting properties. You can
make your own syrup by simmering elderberries with
water, honey, and a touch of cinnamon.
Take a spoonful daily to keep your immune system
strong and ward off any summer illnesses.
Summer Fashion
Be Bold: Fashion Patterns
for Men This Summer
As the sun appears and temperatures
rise, men's fashion evolves to reflect
the vibrant energy of the summer
season.
This season, patterns take centre
stage, offering a dynamic range of
options that cater to every style
preference.
From classic motifs to contemporary
designs, men's summer fashion is all
about embracing boldness,
brightness, and individuality.
to summer fashion. These designs range from simple
shapes, like squares and triangles, to more complex
arrangements such as abstract forms.
Geometric prints are versatile, suitable for both casual
and semi-formal occasions. A geometric print buttondown
shirt can be paired with chinos for a smart-casual
look or worn with denim shorts for a more laid-back
vibe.
The clean lines and structured nature of these patterns
provide a modern edge that is both stylish and
sophisticated.
Stripes
Stripes are a common
favourite that never go
out of style. This
summer, stripes are
making a comeback in
bold and
unconventional ways.
Wide, horizontal stripes
in bright colours are
particularly popular,
offering a fresh twist on
the classic nautical
theme.
Vertical stripes, on the other hand, can create a
slimming effect and add eight to the wearer's silhouette.
Striped shirts, trousers, and even blazers are all
excellent choices. For a cohesive look, pair striped
pieces with solidcolours, ensuring that the stripes
remain the focal point of the outfit.
Floral Patterns
Floral patterns, once considered solely feminine, have
firmly established their place in men's fashion. This
summer, florals are more diverse than ever, featuring
everything from delicate, intricate designs to bold,
oversized blooms.
Floral prints work well for both casual and formal
settings, depending on the scale and colour scheme of
the pattern. A muted floral shirt can be worn under a
blazer for a sophisticated evening look, while a brightly
coloured floral tee is perfect for a day out. The
versatility of floral patterns makes them a must-have for
any fashion-forward man this summer.
Tropical Prints
Tropical prints are a popular summer staple, bringing a
touch of the exotic to everyday wear. Think lush palm
leaves, vibrant hibiscus flowers, and playful pineapples.
These patterns are perfect for casual settings, such as
beach outings or poolside gatherings. A tropical print
shirt, paired with solid-coloured shorts, creates a
balanced yet eye-catching look.
For those willing to take the risk, a full tropical print
ensemble can make a bold statement, but the key is to
keep accessories minimal and let the pattern speak for
itself.
Geometric Designs
Geometric patterns offer a sleek and contemporary twist
Camouflage
Camouflage patterns are traditionally associated with
military attire, but they have been reimagined for
summer fashion with a fresh and stylish twist.
Modern camouflage prints come in various colour
schemes, from classic greens and browns to
unconventional tones like blues and greys. Camouflage
shorts, shirts, and jackets can add a rugged touch to a
summer wardrobe.
When styling camo, it's best to balance the pattern with
neutral pieces to avoid overwhelming the outfit. A camo
jacket paired with a white tee and denim jeans is a
timeless combination that just exudes effortless cool.
Holiday In Style: 6
Gorgeous Hairstyles for
your Summer Break
With the summer months fast
approaching, now is the perfect
time to refresh your hairstyle and
embrace those looks that are fun,
practical, and chic.
From beach waves to stylish
updos, here are 6 fantastic
hairstyle ideas to keep you looking
fabulous on your summer holiday!
Beach Waves
Nothing says summer like
those effortless beach
waves!
This timeless style is
perfect for those lazy days
by the sea or the pool. To
achieve this look, you can
use a sea salt spray on
damp hair and let it air dry
for a natural wave or for
more defined waves, use
curlers on random sections
of your hair and run your
fingers through the curls to
loosen them up.
Not only is it a gorgeous
look but beach waves also
give off a relaxed vibe and are incredibly easy to
maintain.
Messy Bun
The messy bun is the
ultimate go-to style for hot summer
holidays. It’s quick, stylish, and
keeps your hair off your neck,
making it ideal for when you’re
trying to stay cool.
Start by gathering your hair into
a high ponytail, twist the ponytail
around its base to form a bun, and
secure it with bobby pins. Pull out a few
strands around your face for a softer, more casual look.
Wearable both day and evening, the messy bun is perfect
for everything from beach trips to evening dinners.
Braided Crown
If you’re opting for a more intricate and romantic style,
try a braided crown.
This look is not only beautiful but
also practical for keeping your
hair in place during outdoor
activities. Begin by parting
your hair down the middle and
creating two braids on either
side of your head. Wrap each
braid across the top of your head
and pin them in place to form a
crown.
This hairstyle is ideal for special occasions or when you
simply want to feel like a summer goddess.
Sleek Ponytail
The sleek ponytail is a
versatile option that
can be dressed up or
down depending on
your holiday plans.
To achieve this look,
smooth your hair back
using a brush and some
hair gel or smoothing
serum. Gather it into a
high or low ponytail
and secure it with a
hair tie. For an added
touch of elegance, wrap
a small section of hair
around the hair tie and
pin it underneath.
This style is perfect for staying cool while looking
sophisticated and put-together.
Half-Up, Half-Down
Combining the best of both worlds, the half-up, halfdown
hairstyle is perfect for those who want to keep
their hair out of their face but still show off some length.
Simply take the top section of your hair and secure it
with a clip or hair tie, leaving the rest to flow freely. You
can add a braid or twist to the upper section for a more
intricate look.
This style is both youthful and sophisticated, making it
ideal for any holiday occasion.
Add Floral Accessories
No summer hairstyle is complete
without the addition of floral
accessories.
Whether you’re wearing
your hair up or down,
adding a flower crown, a
single bloom, or floral pins
can instantly elevate your
look. These accessories are
perfect for beach weddings,
festivals, or simply adding a
pretty touch to your everyday
style.
Summer Skin Care: Top
Tips for Avoiding Sunburn
Having already had the enjoyment
of some of the summer sun, many
of us are eager for the next couple
of months when we can really
make the most of it.
However, with the summer sun
also comes the risk of sunburn.
Sunburn isn't just a temporary
discomfort, and it can lead to
long-term skin damage, premature
aging, and an increased risk of
skin cancer.
Protecting your skin when the sun
is out is so important so here are
some top tips to help you avoid
sunburn while still enjoying the
sunshine.
Use Sun Cream
Properly
One of the most
effective ways to
prevent sunburn is to
use sun cream. Choose
a broad-spectrum
lotion with an SPF of
30 or higher. Apply it
generously on every
area of exposed skin at
least 15 minutes before
going outside.
Reapply cream every
two hours, or more
often if you're swimming or sweating. Don't forget areas
like the ears, back of the neck, and tops of feet, which
are often forgotten about!
Go In The Shade At Peak Times
The sun's rays are strongest between 10 am. and 4 pm.
During these hours, try to limit your exposure to the sun
and if you need to be outside find a shady spot under a
tree, umbrella, or a tent.
Just this one simple step can significantly reduce your
risk of sunburn and save you days of redness and
soreness as well as limiting your chances of further
issues down the line.
Wear Protective Clothing
Clothing can be your first line of defence against the
sun.
Opt for sleeved tops, long flowy trousers, and widebrimmed
hats. Look for clothes made from tightly woven
fabric or those specifically designed for sun protection,
often labelled with an ultraviolet protection factor
(UPF).
Sunglasses that block UV rays can also protect your eyes
as well as the sensitive skin around them.
Avoid Tanning Beds
Tanning beds, while popular emit UV radiation that can
cause skin damage similar to the sun. They can increase
the risk of skin cancer, including melanoma, the
deadliest form of skin cancer.
If you’re looking to create a sun kissed glow, opt for
safer alternatives like self-tanning lotions or sprays.
Stay Hydrated
Hydration is vital for maintaining healthy skin.
Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help your
skin stay resilient against the sun’s harsh rays.
Dehydration can make your skin more susceptible to
sunburn and other damage.
Apply Lip Balm with SPF
Your lips are susceptible to
sunburn, too. Use a lip
balm with an SPF of 15 or
higher to protect them. Be
sure to reapply frequently,
especially after eating or
drinking.
Know Your Medications
Some medications can increase your skin’s sensitivity to
the sun, including certain antibiotics, antiinflammatories,
and acne treatments.
Check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if your
medications might have this side effect and take extra
precautions if they do.
Educate and Set an Example
Teaching children about sun
safety is essential.
Lead by example and make sun
protection a routine part of
your family’s outdoor activities.
Ensure kids understand the
importance of wearing sun
cream, seeking shade, and
wearing protective clothing.
Summer Fashion
The In Colours this Season:
Women’s Fashion Tips for
the Summer
As the summer sun graces us with its
presence, the world of fashion also
blooms in a wave of gorgeous colours
and patterns.
This season, designers have drawn
inspiration from nature, culture, and
the spirit of renewal, offering a
palette that is both refreshing and
timeless.
From bold brights to calm pastels,
the summer of 2024 promises a
colour spectrum that caters to every
style and mood.
Tropical Brights
One of the most striking trends this summer is the
dominance of tropical colours.
Think of the vivid colours of a sunset over the ocean or
the lush, rich tones of a tropical forest. Leading the
charge is flamingo pink, a colour that just exudes
confidence and charm. This intense pink is perfect for
making a bold statement, whether in a flowy maxi dress
or a chic pair of tailored shorts.
Citrus orange and lemon yellow are also making waves,
capturing the zest and energy of the summer. These eyecatching
colours are ideal for sundresses, swimwear, and
accessories. They bring a sense of warmth and
enthusiasm, perfect for beach outings and those allimportant
summer parties.
Blues and Greens
On the opposite end of the spectrum, serene blues and
greens offer a calming balance to the season's vibrant
brights.
Aqua blue and seafoam green evoke the tranquillity of
the ocean and the coolness of a shaded beach. These
tones are perfect for relaxed summer attire, such as
breezy tops, flowing skirts, and lightweight trousers.
For a deeper, more sophisticated take on these colours,
teal and forest green provide a richer, more luxurious
feel. These shades work beautifully in evening wear and
more formal summer occasions, offering a touch of
elegance while still reflecting the season's natural
inspiration.
Pastels
Pastels remain a popular favourite for summer, and this
year is no exception.
Lavender and mint green are at the forefront, bringing a
soft, romantic touch to summer wardrobes. These gentle
colours are perfect for delicate blouses, airy dresses, and
elegant evening gowns. They also pair beautifully with
neutral tones, creating a balanced and harmonious look.
Duck egg blue and blush pink continue to enchant with
their understated
elegance. These colours
are versatile and
timeless, ideal for both
casual wear and more
refined looks. They add
a touch of
sophistication without
overwhelming the
senses, making them
perfect for summer
weddings and garden
parties.
Earthy Neutrals
In addition to vibrant
and soft hues, earthy
neutrals are making a significant impact this summer.
Sandstone beige, terracotta and olive all bring a
grounded, natural feel to the season’s colour palette.
These colours are perfect for safari-inspired looks,
utility wear as well as the more casual chic outfits.
Off white and light taupe offer a fresh, clean look that is
ideal for hot summer days. These shades are perfect for
minimalist styles, providing a blank canvas that allows
accessories and personal
style to shine through.
Metallic Touches
To add a hint of glamour
this season, metallic accents
in gold, silver and bronze
are being incorporated into
summer fashion.
These shimmery hues can
be found in evening wear,
accessories, and even
casual pieces, providing a
dazzling contrast to the
season's natural tones.
blending and stir
up the fruit a bit.
Add yogurt and
blend again until
completely
combined.
Pour into a tall
Summer Berry Smoothie
Ingredients
• 100 g blueberries
• 100 g blackberries
• 100 g strawberries
• 100 g raspberries
• 200-300+ ml apple juice
Method
Prepare your berries by washing them thoroughly and
patting them dry. Chop the tops of your strawberries off
and halve them if they're large to make things easier.
Add the berries to a blender and add your apple juice.
Add 200ml and then blitz and add more as you go to get
your desired thickness.
Once blitzed and smooth, pass through a sieve if you
don't want lumps, but I just pour it into my Kilner Jars
and drank it!
Method
Put all the
ingredients in a
blender and whizz
until completely
smooth. If it’s a
little thick, add a
drop of chilled
water then blitz
again.
Pour into glasses
and drink straight
away.
Well-being...
Summer Soulful Well-Being
Whilst Summer maybe the same
length as the other 3 seasons it
often feels the shortest! So putting
time to good use & seizing the day
is everything during this time of
year! Most people save up much of
their holiday entitlements to
spend more time with family &
take that much needed time away
from work, often travelling to
sunny destinations just to relax &
feel the benefit of warmer
climates. But are we actually
taking time out & connecting
soulfully with ourselves? Is our
mind & body benefitting from the
rest during this season? Here’s a
few things to help you connect
soulfully this summer & feel more
in tune with your well-being
Re-Connect with You
Take time out to really get in tune
with how your body is feeling.
Holidays & short breaks are great
as long as you are taking the time
to reconnect with yourself
especially if you have a high
pressured job, race around
balancing work & life or are full
on caring for others. Tuning into
your own well-being will truly
help you to switch off & relax.
Walking & grounding in nature is
a perfect way to reconnect. So
beach walking, hill walking,
strolling & playing some light
sports will help to do this
Practicing mindfulness whilst
walking helps to be present in the
moment so ‘notice what you
notice’ when you are out in nature
Cook & Eat Plant Based Foods
In addition to being out in nature
& reconnecting, it’s a great time to
put some nature in you, Where
possible, purchase vegetables,
fruits & beans from your local
farmers market. Even if you only
have access to local grocery stores,
summer is the perfect time to
explore new produce or cook it in
a new way. Plant-based foods have
been shown to improve your
mood, energise you, & reduce your
risk of cardiovascular diseases &
diabetes. They also give you new
ways to stay hydrated in summer.
Just add plant-based foods like
mint or blueberries to your water
to make it more interesting. It’s
far healthier than sugary fizzy
drinks
We spend lots of time dining
outside, weather permitting, so
enjoying plant based foods really
does help us to align more with
nature
Less is More
Rather than looking to a fortnight
away to satisfy your summer
holiday cravings, create a bucket
list of little simple things you can
dip in & out of & that you know
you’ll enjoy. If you are someone
that struggles with
disappointment or comparison,
moderate your expectations & do
things for yourself that are 100%
available to you. This could look
like visiting a restaurant you’ve
always wanted to go to, booking a
massage or overnight retreat or
going on a day trip to a place
you’ve always wanted to go to but
never had the time to get there.
Booking in small activities you
enjoy will give you things to look
forward to that are a lot more
sustainable & still fill you with
moments of pleasure. We often
put all our energies into big
holidays & then get the holiday
blues after when all that time is
used up! Spreading it over less
time will actually give you more!
Be Creative
The summer is a great time to
express yourself & let your
creativity run free by participating
in artistic activities. Any type of
art, whether it be painting,
drawing or sculpting can provide a
therapeutic outlet for feelings &
thoughts. Making art can be a
peaceful practice that promotes
mindfulness enables you to reconnect
with your deepest
aspirations
Whatever you decide to do make it
Soulful for your Mind, Body &
Spirit
Financies
Saving money is a priority
for many people today,
especially given the rising
costs of living and economic
uncertainties.
Fortunately, there are numerous
strategies to help you keep more of
your hard-earned money, even if
your budget is tight. Here are
some of the most effective ways to
save money.
Budgeting
Creating a budget is the first step to understanding
where your money goes. Use available apps or even
simple spreadsheets to track your income and expenses.
By categorising your spending, you can identify areas
where you can cut back and start to make a difference to
your financial situation quickly.
Reduce Utilities
Energy bills are a significant expense for many
households. Take the time to compare suppliers using
websites to find better deals for your utilities.
Additionally, simple actions like using energy-efficient
bulbs, insulating your home, and turning off appliances
when not in use can reduce your electricity and gas bills.
Smart Shopping
Food shopping can also take up a large chunk of your
budget. To save money, consider switching to
supermarket own brands, which often offer the same
quality at a lower price.
Plan your meals, make a shopping list, and stick to it to
avoid impulse buys.
FAIRshare Saving Accounts
Saving regularly can help prepare for those unexpected
events or occasions that can feel financially
overwhelming, such as Christmas or the family holiday.
This year, FAIRshare Credit Union will have been
supporting people in its local communities for 30 years
with safe money management. A key part of its ethical
community banking is encouraging members to save
regularly. Saving just small amounts of money each
week or month can soon add up and helps as a safety net
for life’s emergencies or indeed life’s pleasures.
Even when a member chooses to borrow from
FAIRshare, they build up a savings pot whilst repaying
their loan. They call this ‘Save As You Borrow’ and
applications are always based on affordability. To learn
more about FAIRshare Credit Union and how to make
regular savings: Phone: 01952 200200 or visit
www.fairshare.uk.com
Cutting Down on Subscriptions
Review your monthly subscriptions and cancel those
that you no longer use. This could include magazine
subscriptions, gym memberships, or streaming services.
Many people are surprised to find they pay for multiple
services that provide similar content. Consolidate your
entertainment subscriptions and look for free or cheaper
alternatives.
Set Up A Regular Standing Order
Some of the difficulty when it comes to saving is actually
letting some of your money go and physically moving it
from your current account.
With FAIRshare savings you can set up a regular
standing order to make sure money is going straight into
your savings account without having to actually part
with it.
Save on Transport
Transport can be a major expense for many people, but
there are ways to reduce costs. If you use public
transport, consider getting a railcard or a bus pass to
save on fares.
Car sharing can also cut down on travel expenses and for
those who drive, using fuel comparison apps to find the
cheapest petrol stations and keeping your car wellmaintained
can also improve fuel efficiency.
Use an Engage Pre-paid Visa Card
FAIRshare members can apply for an optional Engage
Debit Card to “load” or transfer money from their
FAIRshare account onto their Engage Card.
Your Engage card can then be used to buy goods or
services in shops, online or over the phone – just like a
debit card. You can earn cashback rewards every time
you use your Engage Pre-Paid Visa Card to pay for goods
at any one of their participating retailers, including
Asda, B&Q and Sainsbury’s.
Not only that but you can also withdraw money from
cash machines or via cash back at major supermarkets.
It’s a great way of separating funds you need to use for
things like essential shopping to money that can be
saved and stored elsewhere. (There is a monthly fee of
£2 per month. Terms and conditions apply.)
With a great range of spectator
sports happening this summer it
could just be the right time to
get your ears ‘sport ready’ for
2024.
Sporting events are exhilarating, full of
dynamic sounds that contribute to the overall
experience—the roar of the crowd, the
commentary, and the game's action. For
those with hearing loss, these sounds might be
challenging to appreciate fully. Here are
some tips to help you enjoy sporting events
with better hearing
Prepare in advance
Before attending sporting events, have your
hearing checked by a professional. This
ensures you know your hearing levels and can
get appropriate recommendations for
hearing aids or other devices.
If attending a major sporting event choose
your seats wisely if possible. Keep away from
loudspeakers as this can help minimize
background noise
Ensure your hearing aids are fully charged or
have fresh batteries before heading to the
event. Modern hearing aids have features like
noise reduction and directional microphones
that can help focus on specific sounds.
If you’re watching your favourite sport on tv
then an assisted listening device such as a tv
streamer will really help. Alternatively, if you
are using an ipad the sound can be streamed
directly to your hearing aids providing a
clearer audio experience!
Let your friends or family know about your
hearing needs. They can help relay important
information or commentary that you might
miss.
Post-Event Care
After the event, give your ears a break to
recover from the loud environment. This is
especially important if you are experiencing
temporary hearing fatigue.
Check and clean your hearing aids or ALDs
after the event to ensure they remain in good
working condition.
If you missed key moments during the live
event, watch replays at home with subtitles or
closed captioning enabled.
Follow the event on social media or
dedicated sports apps that provide live
updates, commentary, and detailed analyses.
By preparing in advance and utilizing the
available resources and technologies, you
can enhance your experience and fully
immerse yourself in the excitement of sporting
events, regardless of hearing challenges.
Enjoying the game is about more than just
seeing it—it's about feeling the energy and
hearing the sounds that make the experience
complete.
colours are perfect in the summer
months. Greens, limes & yellows are
favourites for this trend. Combine
with scatter cushions too. Animal
prints continue to be popular with
the long time favourite of flamingos
being joined by more wildlife such
as peacocks & wild animals. Mix
these with bold colours & you have
lots of colours to chose from to
accessorise
available in bedding too! The
Regency Damask range is beautiful
pastel blues & pinks with a touch of
true Bridgerton with bees & crowns
on it too. Its
elegant, boutique, palatial all rolled
into one. With bright vibrant colours
these prints add a touch of luxury as
well as style! Visit the Newport Beds
A Guide to Summertime
Bedding
Summer is finally here! The sun
arrived with the Summer Solstice this
year & let’s face it we all wondered
if it was ever going to make an
appearance! Having a little
bedroom makeover in Summer is
great as the light is here for longer
as we look for feel good factors in
the house as well as outside in the
garden
Here’s a guide on how you can
bring Summer inside whatever the
weather with bright colours, cool
fabrics & bedding ideas
Bedding to remind you of
holidays
Escape to your summer sanctuary
with a pattern that is a riot of colour
and reveals a specific trend.
Choose duvet covers or bed sheets
featuring tropical blooms & patterns
or go for a kaleidoscope of inspired
watercolours.
Bold colours printed on duvet covers
that are full of colour usually also
have a complemented pattern on
the reverse too so going for a
reversible gives you 2 different
colour ways & styles & you can
accessorise with cushions & soft
furnishings too!
Bring Nature Indoors
The botanical trend continues to be
strong when it comes to bedding.
Bigger & bolder designs in saturated
Summer Stripes
If you want to get the feeling that
you have escaped to the coast,
then use stripes on your bedding
with a nautical theme.
Classic blue stripes give interiors a
fresh, yet relaxed coastal look. Add
bright red accents & bold blue
textiles, or keep it calm by
incorporating
neutral tones
with classic
wooden
furniture and
a rattan
weave rug. A
boho look
would also
work well
with this with
a rattan style bed & matching
accessories
Go Bridgerton!
We are loving Bridgerton right now!
Make The Most Of The
Summer: 6 Healthy Ways
To Relax Without
Technology
As summer arrives with it’s warm,
golden embrace, it's the perfect
time to disconnect from the digital
world and explore healthier, techfree
ways to unwind and
rejuvenate.
Whether you're looking to spend
time outdoors, engage in more
creative pursuits, or simply find
peace in stillness, here are 6
invigorating and wholesome
activities to enjoy.
Digging in the dirt, planting seeds, and watching them
grow can provide a deep sense of accomplishment and
peace.
Whether you have a spacious backyard or a small
balcony, creating and sowing a garden can be a
rewarding way to spend your summer. It also offers the
added benefit of producing fresh herbs, vegetables, or
flowers that you can enjoy.
Reading and Writing
Rediscover the joy of getting lost in a good book.
Find a cosy spot in your home or in the sunshine and get
lost in a captivating story. Reading can transport you to
different worlds, provide a mental escape, and stimulate
your imagination.
Alternatively, try your hand at writing. Whether it’s
journaling your thoughts, writing poetry, or short
stories, putting pen to paper can be a profound way to
express yourself and process your emotions.
Physical Activity
Engaging in physical activities is an excellent way to
relax and stay healthy this summer.
Swimming is a fantastic summer activity that provides a
full-body workout while keeping you cool. Yoga and
meditation can help you centre yourself and find inner
peace, offering benefits for both mind and body.
Additionally, try activities like biking, paddle boarding,
or simply playing a sport you enjoy. The physical
exertion combined with the joy of movement can leave
you feeling both refreshed and invigorated.
Cooking and Baking
Summer is an ideal time to experiment in the kitchen.
Try new recipes using seasonal ingredients and enjoy the
process of cooking or baking your own delicious
creations.
Embrace Nature
One of the most enriching ways to relax is by immersing
yourself in nature.
Hiking through scenic trails, taking leisurely walks
through the local park or exploring beautiful gardens
can do wonders for both your mental and physical wellbeing.
The natural sounds of birds, leaves rustling, and water
flowing can have a calming effect, reducing stress and
anxiety. Consider planning a camping trip where you
can disconnect from technology entirely and re-connect
with nature.
Gardening
Gardening is not only a productive hobby but also a
therapeutic one.
It’s a great way to relax, and you get to enjoy delicious,
healthy meals as a result. Consider making it a social
activity by cooking with family or friends to enhance the
experience and make it a social hobby for you to enjoy.
Mindfulness and Meditation
Practicing mindfulness and meditation can be one of the
most effective ways to relax.
Find a quiet space in the garden, sit comfortably, and
focus on your breathing. Meditation can help clear your
mind, reduce stress, and promote a sense of calm and
well-being.
Mindfulness exercises, such as mindful walking or
eating, can also help you stay present and fully
experience each moment.
The rise of the empowered woman…
live your life. How much responsibility you take for
your own beliefs and behaviours.
It’s not easy to be empowered!
It takes an immense amount of courage to fight for
what is right, to forge our way in this world or to look
ourselves square in the face.
And that’s what is required to become truly
empowered!
We need to really see ourselves. Our ‘good and
‘bad’, our shadow and light, our failures and
successes, our weakness and our strength, our
victim and perpetrator.
And that’s not easy!
We were told stories by our mothers and
grandmothers about how women should be, how we
should behave, how we should portray ourselves,
what we needed to do to survive or be loved… as a
woman!
It’s happening right now!
The rise of the empowered woman.
In towns and cities all over the world women
are starting to gather in circles, like in
ancient times! Like our ancestors.
Supporting each other, seeing and hearing
each other..
We learnt what it meant to be a woman from the
women who raised us. And very often what we learnt
wasn’t conducive to us being an empowered woman.
We were maybe taught to be quiet, be silent, to not
speak up, not make a fuss, we may of been taught
that women were weak, or stupid, we may of been
told we were too emotional or sensitive, too loud or
brash, we may of learnt how to make ourselves
small, or go unnoticed. We may of learnt ways of
getting our needs met and staying safe that don’t
really help us in our adult lives! That prevent us
becoming ‘empowered’.
Women empowering other women…
Being empowered means you're strong and capable
enough to go after your own goals and achieve them
in your own way. It's being the voice that people
need, especially when they can't speak up for
themselves or find the right words.
Empowered women are courageous. They don't let
their fears and doubts about themselves get in the
way of achieving their goals.
They pour their energy and passion into the things
they believe in and the things they perceive as worthy
of standing up for, such as their beliefs, principles,
and morals.
They know who they are. They know themselves.
They are happy living in their own skin. Their own
way.
But being an empowered woman isn’t a destination
we get too… it’s not a 6 week course, it’s not a book
you read. It’s our life’s journey and we are always
learning.
It’s in the decisions you make everyday, the way you

But these beliefs are just that. Thoughts, ideas and
opinions. Formed by others and our own experiences.
They CAN be changed!
It’s your birthright to be an Empowered Woman!!!
Women are magnificent!
We are the feminine creative force!!!
This uprising of the empowered woman is happening to
so many of us because the feminine energy of the
planet is rising!
It’s time to embrace your own power!
If you want to know what you really believe so you can
learn to understand and empower yourself then please
try this simple exercise…
Get a pen and a piece of paper… and find a quiet space
where you won’t be disturbed…
This is a little like word association.
Don’t think about your answers… you want the first
thing that’s pop into your head… that’s what you are
looking for!
That comes from your subconscious, before your
conscious mind censors if it ok to say that out loud or
not! So first answers… !
And be really honest.
This doesn’t work is you censor yourself…
You want the truth. So you can understand yourself
better!
Ok so take 3 slow, deep breaths…
just let yourself breathe and relax…
Let your body relax as you breathe…
Now open your eyes and right down a list that starts
with the following…
WOMEN ARE…
List all the things you believe women are… for example:
Women are weak
Women are shy
Women are manipulative
Woman are spiteful
Women are nurturing
You get the idea… write as many as you can positive and
negative. Although really it’s all positive as you are
learning how you think!
And that’s the first step to changing it! Or giving it an
upgrade!!
It will give you some really good insights into your
thoughts and feelings about women. How they should
be in the world.
The Empowered Feminine is
not the Woman who has
finally, painstakingly fixed
her flaws.
She is the Woman who has
stopped apologising for
them.
The Empowered Feminine is
not the Woman who has
conquered fear.
She is the Woman who
knows well there is no
courage without fear.
The Empowered Feminine is not the Woman who
has it all figured out.
She is the Woman who steps in to uncertainty and
dances with the Mystery.
The Empowered Feminine is not the Woman
who has never fallen or failed.
She is the Woman with scars on her hands and knees,
some of which may still be bleeding.
The Empowered Feminine is not the Woman
who never cries.
She is the Woman who dares to feel vulnerably
and care deeply.
The Empowered Feminine is not in competition
with other Women.
She is a diamond in a sky full of stars.
The Empowered Feminine is not the Woman
playing the blame game.
She is the one whose divine assignment is the solution.
The Empowered Feminine is not the Woman
waiting for the approval of others.
She gives her own permission.
She has heard the call.
And she’s not waiting any more.
Car Review
Skoda Enyaq SUV 60 all
electric – New model for 2024
By Sue Cooke
been redesigned and deliver clearer and easier to follow,
mapping and directions.
I like the gesture control which operates the central
infotainment system when I wave my hand in front of it.
Skoda says that the Laura digital voice assistant can
understand 15 languages! There is a wi-fi hotspot for up
to 8 devices and wireless charging. The Intelligent Park
Assist will store frequently accessed parking spaces and
once learnt, the Enyaq will automatically park in these
spaces on demand
There are many luxury and practical features that I
enjoyed during my week of road testing. Doors open
easily from the inside, as there is a grip, centre door and
the position makes it simple to set the door where it is
opened. I will really miss this on my future road test
cars.
The boot has a generous capacity of 570 litres, with wide
hooks that pull out each side to attach carrier bags.
There is a wide hook centre back of the rear seats for
hanging a wide item and keeping it secure while
travelling. The electrically operated tailgate can be
opened by making a kicking motion under the rear
bumper. The Enyaq is available with 3-Zone air
conditioning that allows the driver to set a different
temperature zone for rear seat passengers.
I always look with heightened
anticipation for the colour of my
next road test car. Just lately I am
disappointed in the delivered grey
exterior paintwork which doesn’t
create the type of lift needed on a
July election day morning. However
grey was ranked the nation’s top
choice with UK buyers for the sixth
year in a row, according to data
released by the Society of Motor
Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT)
Skoda Enyaq buyers are the biggest ‘blue’ fans and red is
also a popular choice for Skoda customers. One in three
cars sold by Škoda in the UK was non-monochrome –
with vivid options including Hyper Green and Phoenix
Orange – a bit adventurous for my taste. The 2024
Skoda Enyaq pulled up and posed on my drive, sun
glittering on the gorgeous blue exterior paintwork. I
was instantly charmed but I found that there are many
other benefits to the all electric SUV. Skoda says for
2024, the Enyaq has increased power, improved
performance and increased rapid charging speed.
In the airy and spacious cabin, seats are extremely
comfortable and the infotainment system has revised
graphics which I found simple to use. New icons deliver
a smoother navigation through the various screens while
both the charging and climate displays have been
reworked to be clearer and simpler to operate on the
move. The navigation and assistance graphics have also
The Skoda Enyaq 2024 model year includes a significant
improvement in engineering design and specification
representing an 82 PS increase over the previous 80
model and a 21 PS increase over the previous Enyaq 80x.
The updated vRS model delivers 340 PS and a faster 0-
62 mph time of 5.5 seconds
Forget the election result, the future to look forward to
is the 2024Skoda Enyaq with a choice of 19 different
exterior paintwork colours!!
Car Review
Mercedes Benz EQS 580
SUV..by Sue Cooke
A state of great comfort or elegance,
especially when involving great
expense is the dictionary description
of the word ‘luxury’ which is how
Mercedes Benz describes the 2024
four-wheel drive EQS 580 which has
received an extensive update.
Perhaps I might also look forward to a prosperous
future as the July elections take place, but I may
have to wait a while until I can afford Mercedes all
electric SUV.
Which is a pity because this all electric vehicle has
the best driving range yet of 400 miles. Exterior
changes include a new radiator cover with chrome
applications and even more comfort in the rear.
multimedia system which has three displays merging
almost seamlessly into one another across the front
of the cabin. This creates a screen strip that is over
141 centimetres wide.
The luxurious padded seats in Nappa leather, a
Burmester 3D surround sound system and a
panoramic sliding roof create a very comfortable
interior that definitely encouraged me to spend more
time behind the wheel.
The innovative ‘Hey Mercedes’ virtual assistant and I
got on very well. She expertly calculated the fastest
route I needed to take, with the shortest charging
time and even told me where the nearest charging
points were. The new intelligent voice control
allowed me to easily access many of the infotainment
functions, including destination input, phone calls or
music selection. MBUX is able to understand
different accents and will adjust to the driver’s voice
over time.
The large boot has a double floor layer for usefully
hiding any items. The tailgate automatically opens
and closes by pressing a button on the key fob.
Storage in the interior is also sizeable with a wide
area inside each door and there is a very deep
covered storage area between the front seats.
The new EQS SUV is a competent off roader and even
has a digital compass in the heads-up display.
Ground-breaking innovations in safety, comfort and
driving functions, help driver and passengers stay
safe on the road.
The all electric EQC has dynamic performance which
is generated by a lithium ion high voltage battery and
electric motor. Range is up to 400 miles (WLTP) for
2024 and power will regenerate when coasting.
Charging time takes 31 minutes with a fast charger
and 5 hours 30 mins with a 22kW AC.
The combination of power, beauty, luxury and
extreme quiet will make the new Mercedes Benz EQC
580 very difficult for me to forget. Unlike the
elections!
It’s looks that turn my head though and the Mercedes
badge never lets me down. The non colourful
Obsidian black metallic exterior paintwork, window
and front trim and chrome plated additions
engenders the head turner for me. There are two
huge rear exhausts and running boards which gave
me easier access to the cabin.
Cutting-edge technology added to the pinnacle of
luxury as I set out on a journey at dusk. The new
innovative digital headlamps soared into life with the
most entertaining light show that I have ever seen.
The headlamps work like a projector with more than
one million pixels per headlamp that responds with
brilliant light to changing traffic, road or weather
conditions. The ultra range high beam made me
think I was driving in daylight. On switching off the
ignition, a multitude of lights dance into view,
flutter, then rise to a majestic static encore.
In the extremely quiet interior, lies the MBUX
Dog Days of Summer: Fun
Activities for you and Your
Dog this Summer
As the weather gets warmer and
the days grow longer, summer is
the perfect time for bonding with
your furry friend.
Whether you're an outdoor
enthusiast or prefer relaxing
activities, there's a huge variety of
ways to ensure your dog enjoys the
season to the fullest.
Here are some fun activities to
consider for a memorable summer
with your canine companion.
Beach Trips
If your dog loves water, a trip to the beach can be a
really exhilarating experience.
Many beaches are dog-friendly and offer areas where
your pup can run off-lead. Swimming, fetching balls or
frisbees, and simply running along the sand are great
ways to keep your dog active and happy.
Just don’t forget to pack plenty of water and dog-safe
sunscreen to protect your pet from the sun.
Some trails may also require dogs to be on a lead, so
check the rules beforehand.
Camping Trips
For the more adventurous, camping can be a great way
to bond with your dog.
Choose pet-friendly sites and bring along all necessary
supplies, including food, water, and bedding for your
dog.
Hiking, swimming, and relaxing by the campfire are all
activities that both you and your dog can enjoy together.
Agility Training
Summer is an excellent time to start agility training with
your dog. Many dog parks and specialised dog training
facilities offer agility courses where your dog can learn
to navigate various obstacles.
This is a great way to keep your dog mentally stimulated
and physically active. Plus, it can strengthen the bond
between you and your dog as you work together.
DIY Water Play
If a trip to the beach isn’t feasible, you can still have
water fun at home.
Set up a kiddie pool in your back garden or create a DIY
sprinkler system. Many dogs love to splash around and
play in the water, providing a fun way to cool off on hot
summer days.
Dog-Friendly Events
Many communities host dog-friendly events such as dog
shows, outdoor concerts, and festivals during the
summer.
These events often include activities specifically for
dogs, such as agility demonstrations, pet costume
contests, and stalls with pet products.
It's a wonderful opportunity to socialise your dog and
enjoy the local culture.
Picnics in the Park
Pack a picnic and head to a local park with your dog.
Bring along some dog-friendly snacks and toys.
This can be a relaxing way to spend the day, enjoying the
outdoors while your dog explores and plays.
Training and Tricks
Hiking Trails
Exploring nature trails provides excellent exercise for
both you and your dog.
Choose dog-friendly hiking trails where your pup can
safely enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. Ensure you
have plenty of water, a first-aid kit, and a sturdy lead.
Summer is also a great time to teach your dog new tricks
or brush up on obedience training.
Training sessions can be held outdoors, making them
more enjoyable and less monotonous. Use positive
reinforcement techniques and keep sessions short and
fun.
Keeping Your Cat Safe Over
the Summer: Essential Tips
Summer brings with it glorious
warmth and sunshine, but it also
poses unique challenges for
keeping your cat safe and
comfortable.
From high temperatures to
increased risks of parasites and
dehydration, summer requires
special care for our feline friends.
Here are some essential tips to
ensure your cat stays healthy and
happy during the hot months.
Hydration is Key
One of the most critical aspects of summer care for cats
is ensuring they stay hydrated.
Cats are prone to dehydration, especially in hot weather.
Provide multiple water sources around your home and
consider using a cat water fountain, which can
encourage your cat to drink more.
Wet cat food can also help increase their water intake.
Avoiding Sunburn
Cats with white or light-coloured fur are particularly
susceptible to sunburn, especially on their ears, nose,
and other areas with thin fur.
Keep your cat indoors during peak sunlight hours,
typically between 10 AM and 4 PM. If your cat loves
basking in the sun, consider using pet-safe sunscreen on
vulnerable areas, but consult your vet first to ensure the
product is safe for cats.
Flea and Tick Prevention
Summer is prime time for fleas and ticks, which can
cause a range of health problems for cats, from skin
irritations to serious diseases.
Use a vet-recommended flea and tick preventative and
check your cat regularly for any signs of these pests.
Keeping your garden trimmed and avoiding tall grass
can also reduce the risk of exposure.
Safe Outdoor Time
If your cat enjoys spending time outdoors, take
precautions to ensure their safety.
Supervised outdoor time can be a great way for your cat
to enjoy the summer, but make sure your garden is
secure. A cat harness and lead can provide safety while
allowing your cat to explore. Alternatively, consider
creating a catio (cat patio) to give your cat outdoor
experience without the risks.
Avoid Toxic Plants and Substances
Many plants and substances that are more prevalent in
the summer can be toxic to cats.
Ensure your garden is free of plants like lilies, azaleas,
and certain ferns. Be cautious with insecticides,
fertilisers, and other chemicals. Store these substances
safely out of reach and be mindful of where your cat
roams.
Watch for Signs of Heatstroke
Heatstroke is a serious risk for cats in hot weather.
Signs of heatstroke include excessive panting, drooling,
lethargy, and vomiting.
Beat the Heat
Cats can suffer from heatstroke, so it’s crucial to keep
them cool.
Ensure your home has cool, shaded areas where your cat
can retreat from the heat. Fans can help maintain a
comfortable temperature or try placing ice packs
wrapped in towels in your cat’s favourite resting spots.
Grooming is also essential; regular brushing helps to
remove excess fur, which can keep your cat cooler.
If you suspect your
cat is suffering from
heatstroke, move
them to a cool place,
offer water, and
contact your vet
immediately. Never
leave your cat in a
parked car, as
temperatures can
rise dangerously
high in a matter of
minutes.
Students smash fundraising record
For over a quarter-century, Wolverhampton Grammar
School’s annual Coast 2 Coast Challenge has tested the grit
and determination of its students. This year’s team of Year 10
students – Lily, Isla, Mia, Daniel, Jack, Charlie, Sophia, Krish,
James, Will, and Ella – not only conquered the gruelling 170-
mile relay from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood's Bay in
North Yorkshire, but also shattered the fundraising record.
experiences and feel understood.”
Mr. Anderson, Head of Wolverhampton Grammar School,
said, “I am immensely proud of our students. Their
determination, resilience, and teamwork have not only seen
them complete one of the toughest challenges but also raise
a record-breaking amount for a cause that is incredibly
important. They are an inspiration to us all.”
During May half term, following an intense 16-week training
programme, the team completed the challenge in an
incredible 26 hours and 42 minutes; battling not only the
distance but also the elements, facing some of the wettest
weather the challenge has ever seen. Detours added an
additional 14 miles to their already monumental trek, a
testament to their unwavering spirit.
Over the years, the Coast 2 Coast Challenge has raised over
£100,000 for charitable causes. This year, the team
surpassed all expectations, smashing the fundraising record
with a staggering £8,540 for Beat, the UK's eating disorder
charity.
Coast 2 Coast is one of many extra-curricular opportunities
that students are presented with at Wolverhampton Grammar
School as part of an education that extends beyond the
classroom. Wolverhampton Grammar School nurtures every
student's potential, ensuring they leave as confident, wellrounded
individuals prepared to make a positive impact on
society. Your child can be a part of a community that
encourages them to
challenge themselves,
support others,
and achieve
greatness.
Prior to the team’s departure they had already raised over
£7,000 and Anna from the Beat Fundraising Team shared this
message: “We wanted to say a massive thank you for the
funds you have raised for Beat. So far, your total fundraised
has surpassed £7,000! What an amazing amount that will
help so many people get support for their eating disorder,
take their first steps to recovery and change lives. As an
example of how your hard work will help those affected by
eating disorders, the money you have raised could fund the
weeks! That’s over 3 months of support for people to connect
exercise to release good endorphins and emotionally because we
talk in depth about personal issues and support each other.
Any advice for men reading this article that may want to
approach your service?
If you are feeling alone, lost or have no one to talk too or if you've
lost your group of friends, Then Primal Instict is for you, Were here
to support you, were here to listen to you without judgement. If you
need someone to talk too, someone to go for a walk with or
someone to go to the gym with. Please reach out, Don't suffer in
silence.
Looking at some of your recent achievements, you've
completed the 24 in 24, Could you explain what this was
and how challenging this was?
The 24 in 24 was a challenge set by us to walk up the Wrekin 24
times in 24 hours, so up and down The Wrekin once is 3 miles. We
aimed to do the 3 miles within an hour. The 24 times was the
equivalent to walking up Mount Everest. Not an easy task for your
average man, but we faced the challenge and we completed it.
Has Primal Instincts reached further than just the men in
Telford?
Yes, we have 20 men who are from Wolverhampton, 6 men from
Shrewsbury, 4 lads from Milton Keynes and 2 men from Stoke on
Trent. So our reach has definitely stretched further than the men in
Telford.
Yes readers its Dribbz and we are back with another ever so
important article highlighting Men's mental health, its nice to
see a group of men that stand for everything I believe in, who
live their life's promoting the ever growing saying that's
echoed throughout society that ''Its OK not to be OK''. Primal
Instincts have quickly gained a huge following in Telford and
are doing great things right now. So i caught up with Cofounder
of Primal Instincts Lee Stevens to find out where the
idea came from and where they are looking to take their
group in the future. enjoy but more importantly...I hope you
can relate.
For the readers who may not be aware of Primal Instincts,
Can you please introduce yourself and explain what your all
about?
We are a men's mental health group, we are men with lived
experiences that are helping other men who are struggling with
many types of mental health. We're a brother hood, We feel that men
need other strong men in there life's to tell them that they are doing
a good job, that their not weak nor are they vulnerable and that they
have other like minded men to support them along the way.
Who first came up with the idea of Primal Instincts?
There was a small group of us that used to get together and go
hiking. Summer last year a few of us decided to take a dip in a
shallow part of a river, upon getting out they told us of how better
they felt for doing it. So a small group of us started regularly going
down to a shallow part of the same river and it escalated from there.
The founders of Primal Instinct are myself Lee Stevens, Cristopher
Booth and Ricky Briffa who sadly is no longer with us in this life.
How beneficial has Primal Instincts been to the many men
that accessed your service and what areas of support do
you offer?
We have 194 members within Primal Instinct, We are very beneficial
to lots of men, men that are struggling with depression, anxiety,
ADHD and many other symptoms. We are a support network
emotionally and physically. We walk up the Wrekin together, We
From researching Primal Instincts, I've seen many videos of
the Viking clap. Can you explain what this is and how
beneficial this is to the men that access it?
The Viking clap takes place in cold water, when you enter the water
your body releases a chemical called dopamine which gives your
brain a feeling of pleasure, satisfaction and motivation. The Viking
clap aims to build up everyone's emotions, so whilst the dopamine
is flowing and the emotions are building which can be due to a bad
week, then the Viking clap gets quicker. The aim is to let all that
emotion out and strike the water with the negative energy that you
may wish to let out and that's where the Viking scream comes in.
This has proven to be really successful and we now have a very
large number of men that meet up regularly before their working
days to do this.
Can you give any words of advice to men that are reading
this article that may be struggling?
Don't struggle in silence, there can never be another one of you and
no one will ever be able to fill your shoes. There's a large amount of
suicide rates in middle aged men and our aim is to bring that
number down. We want to stop middle aged men from taking their
life's as its beginning to become an epidemic.
Finally, Where do you see Primal Instincts in ten years
time?
I believe were going to be all over the U.K, In our first year in just
one area we have 194 members, we are doing something in our area
that no one has ever done. We are the fastest growing men's mental
health group. We don't have funding from the NHS or any external
companies, we raise our own money and we give back to the men in
the group. Some men in our group struggle to get their weekly food
shopping, we help them. Some men struggle to get counselling, we
help them with this too. Its becoming more difficult for men to
access services within the NHS, We help with all this by trying to
provide an easy access route to support our men the best we
possibly can.
Home & Garden
Enjoying The Outdoor
Space: Top Activities for the
Garden this Summer
Summer is the perfect time to
embrace the great outdoors and
transform your garden into a vibrant
space of both activity and relaxation.
Whether you have a large lawn, a
cosy patio, or just a compact balcony,
there are countless ways to make the
most of your garden space during the
warm season. Here are some top
activities to consider this summer:
Wildlife Watching
Encourage wildlife into your garden by adding bird
feeders, bird baths, and planting native flowers that
attract bees and butterflies.
Not only will you be helping local wildlife, but you’ll also
get to enjoy watching these creatures up close, especially
during the early mornings and late evenings.
Outdoor Games
Your garden can also be a great place for bringing in
outdoor games and sports over the summer.
From classic games like badminton, croquet, and
football to more modern activities, there are plenty of
options to keep both adults and children entertained.
Setting up a small football goal or a basketball hoop can
also provide endless fun and exercise for all the family.
DIY Projects
Summer is a great time to tackle some DIY projects in
the garden. Building a birdhouse, crafting garden
ornaments, or even constructing raised beds for your
plants can be rewarding and add a personal touch to
your space.
These projects can often involve the whole family,
making for a fun and productive way to spend time
together whilst also savouring that all-important
Vitamin D.
Yoga and Exercise
Bring your fitness routine outdoors by practicing yoga or
other exercises in the garden.
The fresh air and natural surroundings can enhance
your workout experience while a flat, grassy area or
decking can serve as a perfect outdoor gym.
Stargazing
On clear summer nights, your garden can be the perfect
spot for stargazing particularly if you’re feeling
romantic.
Gardening and Planting
Summer is prime time for gardening. With longer days
and ample sunshine, many plants and flowers thrive
during this season.
Lay out a blanket and enjoy the beauty of the night sky.
Apps and star charts can help you identify constellations
and planets, making it a fun and educational activity. Or
just lie back and enjoy the quiet and beautiful evening.
Consider planting a mix of flowers, vegetables, and
herbs. Sunflowers, zinnias, and marigolds add a splash
of colour, while tomatoes, cucumbers, and basil are
relatively simple and grow in abundance. Gardening not
only beautifies your space but also provides a satisfying,
hands-on activity that can be enjoyed alone or with
family.
Water Activities
If you have the space, consider installing a small water
feature like a fountain or a pond to your garden. The
sound of running water can be incredibly soothing and
can help create a cool, refreshing atmosphere to enjoy.
For families with children, a paddling pool or a sprinkler
can provide hours of fun and a great way to cool down
on hotter days.
Seasonal Home Ideas:
Creating Summer Vibes
within Your Living Space
Creating a summer vibe in your home
can transform your living space into a
refreshing retreat for the season,
evoking the warmth and relaxation of
a perfect summer’s day.
Here’s how to infuse your home with
summer energy using colour,
decoration, scents, and textures.
Use light, sheer curtains to allow sunlight to filter
through while still maintaining privacy. Arrange mirrors
to reflect light and make your rooms feel larger and
more open. Keeping windows clean can also make a
significant difference in how much light enters your
home.
Summer Scents
Fragrance plays a crucial role in setting the mood of a
living space. Use candles, diffusers, or essential oils with
summer-inspired fragrances like citrus, coconut, and
ocean breeze.
Lavender and eucalyptus can also provide a fresh,
calming scent reminiscent of a beautiful summer
garden. Placing these in commonly used areas and
bedrooms can enhance the summer atmosphere within
your home.
Lighten Up Your Decor
Swap out darker, winter-themed decor for items that
reflect the vibrancy of the season.
Light and Bright Colours
Summer is all about bright, airy spaces. Start with your
colour palette by incorporating whites, soft pastels, and
vibrant hues into your living areas.
White walls can make a room feel larger and more open,
reflecting the natural light outdoors. Add pastel blues,
sunny yellows, and coral pinks for a cheerful, inviting
atmosphere through throw pillows, rugs, and artwork.
Refresh Your Fabrics
Switching out heavy fabrics for lighter materials can
instantly refresh your living space.
Opt for cotton or linen for bedding, curtains, and
cushion covers which are both breathable and light,
perfect for the warmer months. A crisp white bedspread
with a few brightly coloured pillows can also evoke a
breezy, coastal feel to your sleep space.
Make The Most of Natural Light
Maximise the amount of natural light in your home to
create a bright and sunny atmosphere while you can.
Think about incorporating nautical elements such as
shells, driftwood, and beach-inspired artwork to your
living spaces. Wicker baskets, rattan furniture, and
bamboo accents can add a natural, rustic charm while a
bowl of fresh fruits, particularly citrus, can serve as both
decor and a snack.
Incorporate Summer-Themed Art
New artwork can dramatically change the feel of your
living space.
Swap out heavy, dark pieces for artwork that depicts
summer scenes such as beaches, sunsets, and tropical
landscapes. Photography prints or paintings with bright,
vibrant colours can really bring a sense of the outdoors
inside.
Declutter and Simplify
Summer vibes often correlate with a sense of freedom
and openness and decluttering your home can
contribute to this feeling.
Remove unnecessary items and keep surfaces clean and
simple. This not only makes your home look more
spacious but also helps create a serene, stress-free
environment for the summer season.
Home Improvements:
Reasons To Say ‘Yes’ To A
Conservatory
As summer arrives, many
homeowners start contemplating
ways to enhance their living space
and maximise their enjoyment of
the warm weather.
One particularly attractive option
is adding a conservatory to your
home. This versatile extension not
only increases the living area but
also brings a host of benefits that
can improve both your lifestyle
and the value of your property.
Here are several compelling
reasons to consider adding a
conservatory to your home this
summer.
Increased Living Space
A conservatory provides an additional room that can be
used for a variety of purposes. Whether you need a quiet
space for reading, a playroom for children, or a sunny
spot for dining, a conservatory offers the flexibility to
meet your needs.
The extra space can make your home feel more open and
less cramped, providing a comfortable and inviting area
that blends the indoors with the outdoors.
significantly increase the value of your home.
Potential buyers are often attracted to the extra living
space and the unique charm that a conservatory offers.
By choosing high-quality materials and a design that
complements the existing architecture, you can ensure
that your conservatory adds both aesthetic and financial
value to your home.
Versatile Design Options
Conservatories come in a wide range of styles and
designs, allowing you to create a space that perfectly
suits your home and personal taste.
From traditional Victorian and Edwardian designs to
sleek and modern styles, there are options to match any
architectural preference. You can also customise the
interior with various flooring, furniture, and decor
choices to create a space that feels uniquely yours.
Energy Efficiency
Modern conservatories are designed with energy
efficiency in mind. High-quality glazing and insulation
ensure that the space remains comfortable year-round,
retaining heat in the winter and staying cool in the
summer.
This makes a conservatory a practical addition that can
be enjoyed regardless of the season. Additionally, many
conservatories now include features such as underfloor
heating and ventilated roofing systems, further
enhancing comfort and usability.
A Space for Entertaining
Summer is the perfect time for social gatherings, and a
conservatory provides an ideal space for entertaining
guests.
Whether hosting a dinner party, a casual barbecue, or a
family gathering, a conservatory offers a stylish and
spacious area that can accommodate your guests
comfortably. The seamless transition from indoor to
outdoor space also makes it easier to entertain, allowing
guests to move freely between the conservatory and the
garden.
Natural Light and Nature
One of the most significant benefits of a conservatory is
the abundance of natural light it brings into your home.
Large windows and glass roofs allow sunlight to flood
the space, creating a bright and airy atmosphere.
This connection to nature can have a positive impact on
your mood and well-being as natural light is known to
improve mental health and increase energy levels.
Additionally, a conservatory offers panoramic views of
your garden, providing a peaceful and serene
environment that enhances your connection to the
outdoors.
Increased Property Value
Adding a conservatory is a strategic investment that can
always looking and feeling its best.
the grass to a perfect length and more advanced models
Making the Most of Being at
Home: Top Ideas for a
Memorable Summer
Summer is a time for relaxation,
creativity, and plenty of
enjoyment. While holidays and
travel can be thrilling, staying at
home offers a unique opportunity
to create lasting memories in the
comfort of your own space.
Here are some of the best ideas to
help you make the most of summer
at home.
For a touch of nature, plant flowers, shrubs, or even a
small vegetable garden. This not only beautifies your
space but also provides a therapeutic activity to enjoy
over summer.
Create a Space To Relax
Lastly, ensure you have a dedicated relaxation space
where you can unwind and soak up the summer vibes.
This could be a hammock under a shady tree, a lounge
chair on the patio, or a cosy spot with a sun umbrella.
Use this space to read, meditate, listen to music, or
simply take in the beauty of your surroundings.
Outdoor Cinema
Bring the cinema experience to your garden with a DIY
outdoor cinema. All you need is a projector, a blank wall
or a portable screen, and some comfortable seating.
Lay out blankets, bean bags, or lawn chairs, and set up a
snack station with popcorn, sweets, and drinks. Choose
a selection of your favourite movies and enjoy film
nights under the stars. This is also a great way to spend
quality time with family and friends whilst also making
the most of the season.
Host a BBQ
Nothing says summer like a delicious BBQ with family
and friends. Experiment with different recipes, from
classic burgers and hot dogs to grilled vegetables and
seafood.
Set up a picnic table with a variety of sides and desserts.
To make it more festive, consider a theme for your BBQ
party, such as Hawaiian, Mexican, or American South.
Decorate accordingly and play some lively music to get
everyone in the summer spirit.
Al Fresco Dining
Take advantage of the warm weather by enjoying your
meals outdoors. Set up a table outside and enjoy your
food in the fresh air.
Enjoy a delicious breakfast and a brew in the morning
sun, have an evening meal surrounded by nature and
sunshine or for a change of pace, plan a picnic in your
garden. Prepare a variety of finger foods, bring out a
blanket, and enjoy a leisurely meal outdoors.
Transform Your Outdoor Space
One of the easiest ways to enjoy summer at home is by
transforming your outdoor space into a haven of
relaxation and fun.
Whether you have a spacious garden, a cosy patio, or a
small balcony, there are countless ways to enhance it.
Consider setting up a comfortable seating area with
weather-resistant furniture and cushions or add some
fairy lights or lanterns to create a magical ambiance in
the evening.
Outdoor Hobbies
Summer is the perfect time to indulge in outdoor
hobbies. Set up a painting set and try your hand at
painting or sketching your surroundings.
If you enjoy reading, create a cosy nook outside where
you can dive into your favourite books. Birdwatching,
photography, and crafting are other great activities that
can be enjoyed in the open air.
Back to Cascades with
DJ Korky - Interview
response considering we only advertised by word-of-mouth and had
only recently set up an Instagram page closer to the date, its simply
amazing and we'd like to say a huge thanks to everyone who turned
up in their numbers, it really does mean so much.
Your Back To Cascades Facebook page seems to have many
followers, How well has all that gone?
It's gone wild all thanks to a friend of mine and local artist Dribbz
who had the initial idea to set the Facebook page up. We now share
the communications which is working really well.
Again, after such a short time of setting up the page we've now hit
over 1000 followers. Its amazing and we'd both like to say a huge
thanks to everyone visiting the page and sparking memories, it really
means so much.
What's the most positive thing about putting on these Back
To Cascades events?
The feedback we had on the first event, people couldn't have been
happier. I had one couple in particular at the event that reminisced
that they had met at Cascades all those years ago and thanked me for
the tunes I was playing saying it had taken them right back to the
night they first met. It really doesn't get better than that does it.
Can you tell the readers about DJ Korky and how long you've
been around the music scene and spinning vinyl?
I've always loved music, when I was younger, I used to listen to the
charts on a Sunday, Id tape my favorite tracks trying to miss out the
DJ speaking, I would write the lyrics down then go over and over
them until I remembered them. One Christmas when I was about 12 I
got a record player and from then on spent all my pocket money on
vinyl's.
Fast forward to 86/87 I started going out clubbing and was lucky
enough to know Dave Jay (the original DJ in Shimmers) who would
ask me to step in on the decks as and when needed.
I brought my first DJ decks about 25 years ago and to this day I love
nothing more than spinning vinyl's at the weekend while Claire (my
Wife) watches the usual rubbish on TV. I've DJed various party's and
also organised my own 80s/90s events in the past.
What inspired you to come up with the idea of Back To
Cascades?
Two things really, firstly a bar called "Be at One" in Birmingham that
me and a few mates went to last Christmas. The atmosphere was
amazing, considering this was in the afternoon, it was packed with
people drinking and dancing to tunes from back in the day.
Secondly a few weeks later Vicky McClure was on the radio
promoting her husband's Day Clubbing events.
These two things got me thinking that this could be something I
could offer to the people of Telford.
What's your aim when re-generating a brand that was
around so many years ago?
my aim was to give the
people of my generation
(Gen X's) a chance to
re-live there memories
of the great Cascades.
There are lots of people
our age that go out
early-doors to socialise
but there is nowhere
locally
to dance and party so
early on in the evening. My events only run until 9pm which gives
opportunities for parents to be back in good time for babysitters etc.
How well received was your first event ?
The first Back To Cascades was a massive success. I cant believe the
How do you think the vibe of your event matches to the vibe
of the original Cascades all them years ago?
Two different eras, two different venues but with the same people and
the same desire to have a great time.
I don't think they were a million miles apart, the only difference being
the knees from excessive dancing don't last as long as they did in the
original Cascades days.
Where do you see
the brand Back To
Cascades in five
years time?
If the attendees still
continue to turn up in
large numbers then we'll
keep doing it, we've got
some great ideas in the
pipe-line for future
events too.
For any of our readers that would like to attend your events,
Where can they find further information about Back To
Cascades?
We are active across all socials, simply type in Back To Cascades,
Our aim with the Facebook and Instagram pages is to bring people
together that may have lost touch, to reminisce about songs they
relate memories too, and to generally connect with one another. On
these pages you will find all the information about forthcoming dates
and vinyl's that will be spinned on the night.
Finally, any comments for the many people that have shown
up to your events and supported you on this revival journey?
A massive thanks to each and everyone of you for being there, its
you lot that made this a huge success. Thank you to local
DJ/Producer Bass Phaze for the help with all the artwork, Eddie at
club Night fever in Wellington for the use of his fantastic venue and
to my good friend Dribbz for all his help and support throughout this
journey. Finally a huge thank you to all 1000 of you that have
followed the page and have posted some of your fondest memories
from days gone by.
As the summer months approach,
While moderate drinking can be a
summer poses significant health
risks that are often overlooked.
Dehydration and Heat Stroke
One of the most immediate dangers of drinking too
much alcohol in the summer is dehydration.
Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it increases the
production of urine, leading to fluid loss. This effect is
exacerbated by the high temperatures and increased
sweating during summer activities.
Dehydration can lead to severe health issues, including
heat exhaustion and heat stroke; a medical emergency
characterised by a body temperature above 40°C,
confusion, and loss of consciousness which can be fatal
if not treated promptly.
Alcohol impairs our judgment, coordination, and
reaction times, increasing the risk of accidents and
injuries. Drowning incidents, for instance, are
significantly higher among those who have been
drinking.
Long-term Health Effects
Beyond the immediate dangers, excessive alcohol
consumption has long-term health consequences.
Chronic heavy drinking can lead to a range of serious
health problems, including liver disease, cardiovascular
issues, and an increased risk of certain cancers. The
liver, which processes alcohol, can become fatty and
inflamed, leading to conditions such as alcoholic
hepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis.
The risk of heart disease also rises with heavy drinking,
as it can lead to high blood pressure, cardiomyopathy,
and irregular heartbeats.
Mental Health Implications
The impact of alcohol on mental health is another
crucial concern. While some might use alcohol to relax
or socialise, excessive drinking can lead to increased
anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders.
Alcohol can disrupt the balance of neurotransmitters in
the brain, leading to mood swings and emotional
instability. Over time, this can exacerbate existing
mental health issues or contribute to the development of
new ones.
Social and Relationship Strains
Excessive drinking can strain relationships with family
and friends. Summer gatherings can quickly turn from
fun to distressing if someone drinks too much and
behaves inappropriately. This can lead to conflicts,
accidents, and even legal issues, such as driving under
the influence (DUI) charges.
The social ramifications can be long-lasting, affecting
one's personal and professional life.
Moderation and Awareness
The key to enjoying alcohol safely during the summer is
moderation and awareness.
Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, eating
before and while drinking, and being mindful of the
signs of overconsumption can help prevent many of the
health risks associated with excessive alcohol intake.
Bad Judgment and Increased Risk of Accidents
Summer is a time for more outdoor activities such as
swimming, boating, and hiking, which can become
dangerous when alcohol is involved.
It's also essential to plan ahead, for example if you're
going to an event where alcohol will be served, arrange
for a designated driver or use public transportation. Just
being aware and taking steps not to over-indulge will
allow you to have a happy and healthy summer to look
back on.
Exploring The
Latest Dining
Trends With
Cousins Furniture
A major shift in Dining is
the integration of kitchen
and dining spaces into
open-plan layouts,
transforming cooking and
dining while enhancing
social interactions.
Cousins Furniture explores
these trends, focusing on
the synergy between
kitchen dining and openplan
living, along with
practical finishes and
materials.
The Rise of Open Plan Living
Open-plan living removes barriers between
kitchen and dining areas and has gained
immense popularity in contemporary homes
and interior design. This helps to create
spacious, light-filled, and connected
environments by the elimination of walls. This
design promotes a communal atmosphere,
allowing effortless interaction among family
and friends.
Multi-Functional Spaces - Beyond
Cooking and Eating
Modern homes now feature multi-functional
kitchen-dining areas, accommodating
cooking, eating, working, studying, and
exercising. Flexible furniture and smart
storage solutions enhance the adaptability of
these spaces.
The kitchen is no longer just a place for
cooking, it has evolved into a multifunctional
hub for work, socialising, and entertainment.
Cousins Furniture offers durable dining tables
and chairs made from heat, scratch, and
water-resistant materials, ideal for daily use in
busy kitchens.
Cousins offer a variety of finishes including
ceramic, marble, high gloss, solid oak, and
reclaimed materials. Ceramic tables, heat and
acid-resistant, are particularly suitable for
kitchens, while wooden tables, especially
hardwoods like mahogany and oak, are perfect
for formal dining rooms.
Casual Dining
Breakfast tables and nooks provide a casual
dining option, ideal for family gatherings and
versatile uses like homework and games.
Comfort is key in dining seating, with options
like upholstered chairs and benches
enhancing the dining experience and can be
ideal for longer dining.
Bar tables and stools offer a stylish, spacesaving
dining solution. Their adjustable
heights and diverse designs cater to various
interior styles, making them a versatile choice
for contemporary homes.
Dining benches offer a departure from
traditional seating, providing flexibility and the
ability to accommodate more guests which
can save you from buying individual dining
chairs. Just as importantly, they’re more costeffective.
Their versatile nature allows for creative
arrangements and optimal space utilisation.
When not in use or not required, it can be
pushed against the wall or tucked under for
additional space saving.
Cousins are pleased to offer a variety of dining
chairs and bar stools that are carefully
engineered for the ultimate in practicality and
are made from a sturdy and durable
construction, suitable for the rigours of
everyday living. You can find a variety of styles
such as antique PU leather with practical
wipe-cleanable waterproof fabric in a grey to
go with more modern dining, or tan colours
to go with the more industrial style.
Reclaiming The Dining Room
While open-plan remains popular, there's a
growing trend towards more defined spaces.
Formal dining rooms are still favoured by
those with larger homes. Darker woods and
fabric dining chairs, particularly in boucle
fabric, are becoming popular for dining room
furniture. Hardwood tables, such as those
made from mahogany, walnut, maple, oak, or
teak, are preferred for their durability and
elegance. Though more economical, tables
made from engineered woods like plywood
and MDF lack the strength of hardwood. Many
wood tables now feature a practical, wipeclean
satin lacquered finish, ideal for dealing
with spills.
Extendable tables are highly sought after for
their versatility in accommodating guests.
These tables often feature easy pop-up
extensions or leaves stored inside. They are
perfect for compact spaces, allowing you to
adjust the table size as needed. Extendable
tables come in various shapes, including
round, rectangular, square, and oval.
Round dining tables are ideal for smaller
rooms, as their shape saves space and
promotes a more intimate and interactive
dining experience. Without corners, they are
easier to navigate and create a sociable
atmosphere where everyone can converse
freely.
In conclusion, evolving dining trends are
reshaping our living spaces, emphasising
connection, multifunctionality, and style.
Whether in an open-plan kitchen or a formal
dining room, these trends celebrate the joy of
shared dining experiences and the elegance
of both contemporary and traditional designs
