It is a privilege to welcome you to our 

Connecting programme for 2023. Tāmaki 

Makaurau is a wonderful and vibrant city and 

we are proud to have designed a programme 

to match. Whoever you are and whatever part 

of the city you live in there are entertaining, 

engaging and fulfilling musical activities to suit 

the whole whānau. 

The kaupapa of APO Connecting is that music 

should provide a pathway to personal fulfilment 

in all kinds of ways. Whether that is through a 

side-by-side performance at our Community 

Play In or bringing your mokopuna to see the 

orchestra for the first time, we firmly believe that 

‘Music opens Minds.’ 

Of course, none of this is possible without the 

support of our wonderful sponsors, funders and 

donors who generously give to the programme 

year on year. To them we say a huge ngā mihi 

maioha. This support enables us to deliver a 

diverse range of activities that benefit everyone 

across the Auckland region.

Welcome to our APO Connecting 2023 season, 

we are very excited to be sharing our programme 

of concerts and community programmes with 

you. The calendar is full to the brim, and we know 

there will be something in the mix for everyone. 

For schools this year we have a newly reimagined 

partnership programme. APOPS has been a 

staple of the Connecting programme for many 

years and we are now delighted to offer improved 

membership options for schools to connect 

in the best way possible for their akonga. 

Our schools concerts remain in the programme 

and our Discovery concert will inspire, delight 

and entrance as we explore dance music in all 

its forms. 

Dance is also a thread through our 2023 year 

and our popular concert for pre-school tamariki 

returns full of kanikani in APO 4 Kids: Move 

and Groove. The concert is jam packed with 

singing and dance along activities in a fun-filled 

interactive concert for all the family, perfect for 

tupuna, mokopuna and everyone in between. 

Community Classics: Song & Dance takes this 

even further with brilliant music from across the 

ages and is a fantastic and free way to introduce 

the whānau to a concert experience.

fanfare for orchestra. One student is selected

WITH ROYAL NEW ZEALAND BALLET (RNZB) 

An APO ensemble provides music for the 

RNZB Educator to work with secondary school 

students to move to music from an upcoming 

RNZB production. Students then attend the

Aspiring composers workshop their music with 

the full orchestra. The orchestra works through the 

new pieces, offering feedback and advice.

This section of the Our Voice programme utilises 

various ensemble combinations to workshop new

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME 

Today’s talent, 

tomorrow’s stars. 

The Haydn Staples APO Piano Scholarship 

Programme is run in partnership with the 

University of Auckland’s School of Music, and 

made possible by the generous support of the 

Staples Education Foundation. Up to three 

pianists are selected annually to participate in 

the programme which enables them to explore 

every aspect of piano performance. 

This innovative programme assists talented 

young pianists to develop a diverse portfolio 

of skills to complement their advanced 

solo studies. It equips them with invaluable 

experiences and training opportunities 

to improve improve their musicianship 

and employability. 

As part of the programme, the chosen 

scholars will have the benefit of the following:

CAMRYN NEL 

Camryn Nel is an Auckland-based composer and freelance 

percussionist, currently finishing his BMus(Hons) in 

Composition at the University of Auckland. His works have 

won prizes in the Douglas Lilburn Composition Competition, 

commendations from Compose Aotearoa, and selection for 

performance at the Todd Corporation Young Composers 

Awards later this year.
