CRISTAL Pro® Fat Freezing
CRISTAL Pro® is a state-of-the-art medical cryolipolysis
device designed to provide a non-invasive and highly
effective solution for fat reduction. Using advanced cooling
technology, it targets and eliminates stubborn fat cells
without the need for surgery, injections, or downtime.
Unlike traditional weight-loss methods, which shrink fat
cells, CRISTAL Pro® works by permanently destroying
them through a controlled cooling process. The body then
naturally eliminates these
dead fat cells over the
following weeks, resulting in
a more sculpted and
contoured appearance.

DRINKS: IN THE
CARIBBEAN RUM SPIRIT
Caribbean rums are highly
respected and hugely
appreciated throughout the
world. Jamaica and the
Dominican Republic are well
known producers of Caribbean
rums, as well as other Caribbean
islands, that create delectable
beverages of this type. The
Caribbean is very much
recognised as the ‘birthplace of
rum’ and the distilleries located
in the Caribbean are amongst
the world’s very best. Differing
ingredients and different
processes of productions define
the appearances, bouquets,
pleasures for the mouth and
sensations on the palate.
Multi award-winning Diablesse
Rum is UK based and was
founded by Cleo Farman. The
Diablesse Company produces
small-batch blends of fine, aged
rums, especially selected from
Barbados, Guyana and Jamaica.
The quality plus several unique
profiles of flavour, that create
distinctive productions, are now
recognised globally. The rums
are created using historic
methods and matured in
charred American Oak exbourbon
casks.
DIABLESSE CARIBBEAN RUM
(40% vol) is a very regular
choice for rum lovers. Caribbean
rum is renowned around the
world and this production (in
my opinion) justly deserves the
high rating it constantly
receives. Little introduction is
required for this delightful,
small-batch rum, which is
produced utilising a blend of
fine, aged rums, from Jamaica,
Guyana and Barbados, to a great
advantage.
DIABLESSE CLEMENTINE
SPICED RUM (40% vol) is a
favourite with many spiced rum
devotees. I found the
Clementine contribution, for
this popular beverage, to be
evident throughout.
Flavoursome and with a blend of
warming Caribbean-inspired
spices, including a hint of
ginger, this small-batch
production continues to gain in
popularity.
coconut, plus hibiscus and ripe,
red berries certainly coming
through. The palate’s sensation
continues, with the pleasures of
this unusual, small-batch
delectation.
The very informative website
has all details of stockists and
information about longstanding,
proven methods of
productions. I also found the
website reading to enlighten me
about the centuries-old stills,
which are used in the
productions. Online ordering is
easy and orders are dispatched
efficiently and quickly.

Community support blossoms at
Wellington Station
Friends of the Station members with
Sam Hine (Wrekin Housing Group);
John Anderson and Rob Anderson
(Meadowdale Garden Centre); Mayor
Reg Snell; and Venn Davies
(Wellington Rotary Club).
The platform at Wellington Station is
looking brighter and more welcoming,
thanks to the dedication of the Friends
of Wellington Station and support from
the local community and organisations.
The Friends group, who work tirelessly
to ensure the station is a pleasant
space for commuters and visitors alike,
are celebrating several recent
improvements.
A significant addition to the station
comes in the form of brand-new
planters which were crafted by students
Tyler Klimowski and Lucas Davies at
Telford College. In addition to the
planters made by the students,
Wellington Rotary have also sponsored
a planter.
The Friends have also focused on
revitalising the station's signature
feature: the lavender terrace with
replanting of the beds made possible
by a generous grant from the Wrekin
Housing Group. The group received
invaluable assistance and a kind
donation of lavender plants from
Meadowdale Garden Centre in
Horsehay.

Lifestyle
Kickstart Your Year: Top
Entertainment & Leisure
Picks for January and
February 2026
The start of a new year is all about fresh
energy, new adventures, and, let’s be
honest, shaking off the post-holiday
blues. While January and February
might feel quiet, these months are
actually packed with opportunities for
fun, culture, and indulgence. Whether
you’re a festival fan, a film buff, or just
looking for a cozy escape, here’s your
guide to making the first months of 2026
unforgettable.
Fixes Galore
Theatres and cinemas tend to kick off the new year with
fresh, exciting productions. January is the perfect month
to catch a new West End show before the crowds return
in spring. Smaller theatres across the country also
showcase innovative plays and musicals, often featuring
up-and-coming talent. If cinema is more your speed,
January is packed with award-season contenders, from
gripping dramas to feel-good comedies. Don’t forget the
thrill of live music—January and February see many
artists touring, taking advantage of post-holiday concert
calendars. Whether it’s jazz in an intimate London
venue or indie rock in Manchester, there’s something to
suit every taste.
3. Cozy Up Indoors: Hobbies & Wellness
The chilly months are ideal for embracing indoor
activities. Cooking classes, art workshops, and creative
courses are all excellent ways to learn something new
while meeting like-minded people. Gyms and wellness
studios are buzzing in January with those determined to
keep New Year’s resolutions, but it’s also the perfect
time to try alternative classes like aerial yoga, pottery,
or even immersive escape rooms. Embracing new
hobbies not only stimulates your mind but also injects a
sense of fun into otherwise dreary winter days.
4. Streaming Gold: Must-Watch Shows &
Films
If staying in is more your speed, January and February
deliver some of the best content of the year. Streaming
platforms often release major series and films to
coincide with awards season hype, ensuring plenty of
binge-worthy options. From heart-stopping thrillers to
lighthearted rom-coms perfect for midweek evenings,
there’s never been a better time to curl up on the sofa.
Don’t overlook the smaller, critically acclaimed
independent films—they’re perfect for cinephiles eager
for fresh storytelling
“Winter is the perfect excuse to try
something new—indoor or out!”
1. Winter Festivals That Spark Joy
Winter doesn’t have to mean staying indoors. Across the
UK and beyond, January and February bring a slew of
winter festivals that are perfect for anyone looking to
shake off the January blues. Ice sculpture displays,
candlelit markets, and outdoor light shows are just the
tip of the iceberg. For something uniquely magical,
check out the Bath Christmas Festival winter edition,
which often runs into early January, or venture to
Scotland for the Loch Ness Winter Carnival, which
combines local folklore, music, and family-friendly
activities. These events are perfect for a weekend
getaway, offering a mix of culture, cuisine, and
immersive experiences.
2. Theatre, Film & Live Music: Culture
5. Plan a Mini Getaway
Winter is often underrated for travel. Whether it’s a
romantic city break, a countryside retreat, or a spa
weekend, January and February offer quieter, more
peaceful experiences compared to the busy holiday
season. Prices are generally lower, and destinations feel
less crowded, allowing for a more relaxed escape.
Consider heading to coastal towns for brisk walks by the
sea or visiting historic castles and museums without the
summer crowds.
In Conclusion...
January and February might be quiet on the calendar,
but they’re bursting with entertainment and leisure
opportunities. Festivals, theatre, live music, streaming
delights, and winter escapes all make this the perfect
time to start 2026 with energy, fun, and a touch of
adventure. Don’t let the winter blues hold you back—
embrace the season and make it memorable.
“The new year is a blank page—fill it
with experiences that spark joy!”

Building Better:
Turning Houses into
Homes with H & A Home
Improvement
In today’s fast-paced world,
our homes have become
more than just places to
live — they are spaces to
relax, work, entertain and
grow. Whether it’s a longoverdue
kitchen upgrade, a
much-needed extension or a
complete home refresh,
choosing the right building team can make all the
difference between a stressful project and an
exciting transformation.
opportunity. Measurements are taken, existing
features are assessed and potential
improvements are explored — whether that
means increasing natural light, improving
functionality or simply making better use of the
available space. Expert guidance is offered
throughout, with practical suggestions tailored to
both taste and budget.
Extensions remain one of the most popular ways
to enhance a property, and for good reason. A
well-designed extension can completely
transform how a home feels, creating light-filled
living areas and adding long-term value. From
loft conversions to side or rear extensions,
understanding planning permissions, building
regulations and cost implications is essential —
and having experienced professionals on hand
offers invaluable peace of mind.
Family-run businesses continue to stand out in
the home improvement sector, and H & A

skilled craftsmanship with a personal, honest
approach that many homeowners value deeply.
From kitchens and bathrooms to extensions,
patios, flooring and carpentry, their services
cover the full spectrum of modern home
improvement needs.
“Listening is where every successful
renovation truly begins.”
One of the most important — and often
overlooked — stages of any renovation is the
initial consultation. At H & A Building, this is
where the journey truly begins. Rather than
arriving with fixed ideas, their team focuses on
listening. Homeowners are encouraged to share
their vision, lifestyle needs and any concerns
they may have, ensuring the final design reflects
how the space will actually be used day to day.
During an in-home consultation, careful
attention is given to layout, flow and
What truly sets H & A Building apart, however, is
their commitment to quality and communication.
Clients consistently praise being kept informed
and consulted at every stage, with projects
delivered by trusted tradespeople who go the
extra mile. It’s this attention to detail and
customer care that turns first-time clients into
repeat customers.
Ultimately, renovating your home should feel
exciting, not overwhelming. With the right team,
expert advice and a clear plan, even the most
ambitious ideas can be brought to life smoothly
and successfully. For homeowners dreaming of a
space that better reflects their personality,
lifestyle and future plans, the first step is simply
starting the conversation — because every dream
home begins with a well-planned consultation.
Testimonial:
“We were nervous about extending, but the team
guided us every step of the way. The result is a
bright, beautiful space that feels like it’s always
been part of our home.”

Born in Shropshire, Now
Transforming the Midlands
From a single clinic in Telford to an award-winning aesthetic group
redefining beauty across the Midlands.
Winning Best Clinic Group UK at the prestigious Safety in
Beauty Diamond Awards, hosted at the iconic Londoner
Hotel in London, marks a proud and defining chapter in The
Medispa story. For a brand born in Shropshire, this national
recognition is a celebration of far more than growth — it is
acknowledgement of a vision built on safety, integrity and quietly
confident results.
Where It All Began
The Medispa first opened its doors in Telford in 2023 with a
clear ambition: to offer a new standard of aesthetic care — one
that combined a luxury experience with a medic-led, safetyfirst
approach. From the outset, the clinic resonated with
patients seeking natural results, honest advice and treatments that
felt considered rather than commercial.
That philosophy quickly gained momentum. In 2024, The Medispa
expanded into Shrewsbury, bringing its signature blend of clinical
excellence and calm, premium surroundings to a wider Shropshire
audience. Each milestone was approached with intention, ensuring
that growth never compromised standards.
Expanding with Purpose
In 2025, The Medispa’s journey moved beyond Shropshire,
expanding into Wolverhampton, Walsall and Solihull — a
pivotal step in transforming access to high-quality aesthetic
medicine across the Midlands.
These newer clinics reflect an evolution of the brand: smaller,
beautifully designed aesthetic spaces created to make
medic-led injectable treatments more accessible, both in
terms of location and price point, while maintaining the same
clinical governance, ethical ethos and attention to detail that define
The Medispa name.
Premium, Medic-Led, Always
At the heart of every Medispa clinic is a commitment to medical
leadership and patient safety. Treatments are guided by robust
clinical oversight, ensuring patients feel informed, supported and
confident at every stage of their journey.
This is paired with investment in FDA-cleared, gold-standard
technologies — advanced devices chosen for their proven
results, safety profiles and ability to enhance skin health long-term.
These super technologies allow The Medispa to deliver visible,
confidence-boosting outcomes without compromising skin
integrity or natural beauty.
Leading an Aesthetic Revolution in the
Midlands
Traditionally, patients seeking the highest standards in aesthetic
medicine felt drawn to London and major cities. The Medispa is
proudly changing that narrative.
A Moment to Celebrate — and a Vision
for What’s Next
Being awarded Best Clinic Group UK by the Safety in Beauty
Diamond Awards — an organisation dedicated to raising industry
standards — is a moment of immense pride. It reflects not only
what The Medispa has achieved, but how it has grown: responsibly,
ethically and always with patients at the centre.
From its Shropshire roots to its growing Midlands presence, The
Medispa continues to set a new benchmark for modern aesthetic
medicine — refined, trusted and designed for real people, living real
lives.
By bringing London-level care, technology and expertise to
the Midlands, the brand is leading a quiet but powerful aesthetic
revolution — proving that world-class treatment doesn’t need a
postcode premium.

Health
Staying Positive Through
the Dark of Winter
As winter settles across the UK, the
shorter days and longer nights can
feel relentless. By late afternoon,
streets are already dim, energy levels
dip and motivation can quietly
disappear. For many, winter isn’t just
a season — it’s a challenge to
wellbeing. Yet while we can’t change
the weather or daylight hours, there
are simple, effective ways to protect
our mood and even find comfort in
the darker months.
Connection is especially important during the darker
months. It’s easy to withdraw when energy is low, but
isolation often deepens winter blues. Regular check-ins
with friends or family, even via a phone call or message,
can provide reassurance and perspective. Many people
find comfort in shared experiences — meeting for a
walk, cooking together, or simply sitting with someone
and talking openly. Human connection remains one of
the most effective mood lifters we have.
Nutrition also plays a role in how we feel. Winter
comfort foods are tempting, but balance is important.
Warm, nourishing meals with plenty of vegetables,
protein and healthy fats help sustain energy levels.
Vitamin D deficiency is common in the UK during winter
due to lack of sunlight, and many people benefit from
supplementation — something GPs and health bodies
regularly recommend. Staying hydrated, even when it’s
cold, also supports both physical and mental wellbeing.
Importantly, winter invites a shift in mindset. Rather
than fighting the slower pace, there is value in
embracing it. Winter can be a season for rest, reflection
and recalibration. Allowing yourself permission to slow
down — earlier nights, quieter weekends, more time at
home — can reduce guilt and pressure. Cosiness, often
dismissed as trivial, has real psychological benefits. Soft
lighting, warm blankets, music and comforting scents
create a sense of safety and calm.
Finally, it’s essential to recognise when low mood
becomes more than seasonal discomfort. If feelings of
sadness, exhaustion or hopelessness persist, seeking
support is a sign of strength, not failure. GPs, therapists
and support services are there year-round, and early
help can prevent winter struggles from becoming
overwhelming.
One of the biggest factors affecting winter wellbeing is
lack of light. Reduced daylight can disrupt our circadian
rhythm, affecting sleep, mood and concentration.
Making the most of natural light is crucial. A short walk
outdoors in the morning — even on a grey day — can
help reset your body clock and lift energy levels. Sitting
near a window while working, opening curtains as soon
as you wake up, or even investing in a daylight lamp can
make a noticeable difference.
Routine also plays a powerful role in staying positive.
When days blur together, motivation often suffers.
Creating a simple daily structure — regular wake-up
times, meals and bedtime — provides stability and a
sense of control. Small rituals, such as a morning coffee
in your favourite mug or an evening wind-down routine,
give the day shape and something to look forward to.
Movement is another key ingredient. Exercise doesn’t
need to mean cold runs or busy gyms. Gentle activity —
stretching, yoga, walking, or an online workout — can
boost endorphins and reduce stress. In winter,
consistency matters more than intensity. Even ten
minutes of movement can help shift a low mood and
combat sluggishness.
Winter may be dark, but it doesn’t have to be bleak. By
prioritising light, routine, movement and connection —
and by being kinder to ourselves — it’s possible not just
to endure the season, but to find moments of warmth
within it. Sometimes, staying positive in winter isn’t
about doing more, but about doing what truly nourishes
us.
Daily winter check list -
* Get some sunlight, spend at least 20 minutes outdoors,
even if its cloudy
* Keep a gentle routine, wake up and go to be at the
same time, plan one small thing to look forward to each
day.
* Move your body for at least 10 minutes be it a walk,
stretch, yoga, housework and stand regularly during the
working day especially if office based
* Connect with someone, message or speak to at least
one person a day, be honest about how you are feeling
and ask about how they are feeling - support each other.
* Watch your mental health, don’t judge yourself for
feeling low, do at least one calming activity such as
reading, breathing exercises, candles around the bath,
listen to music.

Gentle Beginnings: A Nervous
System Reset for the Start of
the Year
January and February arrive quietly.
After the intensity of the festive
season and the pressure of new
beginnings, these early months
invite something very different from
urgency. In nature, winter is not a
time of expansion or acceleration. It
is a time of rest, repair and
recalibration. Our wellbeing thrives
when we allow ourselves to follow
the same rhythm.
Modern culture often encourages us
to begin the year with momentum:
resolutions, goals, productivity. Yet
the nervous system does not reset
through force. It restores through
safety, slowness and consistency.
Early winter offers the perfect
conditions for this kind of gentle
reset.
Why the Nervous System Needs
Winter
The nervous system governs how we
respond to stress, rest and change.
After long periods of stimulation,
social demands, busy schedules,
emotional intensity, it naturally
seeks quieter states. January and
February support the
parasympathetic nervous system,
the part responsible for rest,
digestion and healing.
When we allow space for slower
mornings, earlier nights and
reduced stimulation, the body
begins to regulate itself. Breathing
deepens, muscle tension eases, and
mental clarity slowly returns. This is
not inactivity, it is biological
restoration.
Letting Go of the Rush to Begin
A gentle beginning does not mean a
lack of intention. It means choosing
how we begin. Instead of asking
“What should I achieve?”, winter
invites a different question: “What
does my body need in order to feel
safe and supported?”
This might look like fewer
commitments, softer routines, or
simply giving yourself permission to
move more slowly. When the
nervous system feels settled, clarity
and motivation arise naturally
without pressure.
nature after dusk. Listen to the
hush. Feel the beauty of the dark.
Supporting the Nervous
System Through Gentle,
Grounded Healing
Practices such as Soul to Sole
healing focus on calming the
nervous system through presence,
rhythm and gentle sensory
awareness. Working through the feet
and subtle energy pathways, this
approach encourages grounding,
emotional regulation and a sense of
safety in the body. Many people
experience it as deeply settling,
helping the mind to quiet while the
body releases held tension.
In the slower months of winter,
grounding based therapies can offer
a supportive way to reconnect with
the body and restore balance
without overwhelm.
Small Practices That Support
Regulation
Nervous system care does not need
to be complex. Simple, sensory
experiences are often the most
effective: creating moments of quiet
without distraction, listening to
calming sounds, spending time in
low light during evenings, moving
the body slowly and intentionally,
and allowing pauses between
activities.
Winter as Preparation, Not
Pause
January and February are not empty
months to endure. They are
foundational. Just as roots grow
underground before anything
appears above the soil, this quieter
season prepares us for growth later
in the year.
By honouring rest and slowing down
now, we support long-term
resilience, clearer thinking, and
emotional wellbeing. When spring
arrives, we move forward not from
exhaustion but from steadiness.

CLEARER HEARING FOR
THE YEAR AHEAD
Christmas has come and
gone but for some it may
have been a really tricky
time just because they
struggled to hear and
engage with others as
they had hoped.
Holiday conversations often involve
overlapping voices, fast topic changes,
and group chats, which are some of the
most challenging listening situations for
anyone. Combine this with family meals,
kids playing, music, cooking sounds,
which create ambient noise that makes
speech harder to pick out, especially if
you already have even a mild hearing
loss
If this was you or a loved one, it may be
time to have those ears checked for FREE
by our professional hearing care team
and let us help you hear those allimportant
sounds of life in 2026. It may be
as simple as having your ears cleared of
ear wax or trying out a brand new
hearing solution you didn’t know about.
Better hearing should be and can be
simple.
Did you know ears not only help you
hear, but also aid balance? Studies have
shown that there is a link between agerelated
hearing loss and an increased risk
of mobility-related problems including
walking difficulties, slower gait speed, loss
of balance, and falls. Older adults, with
hearing loss, are 3 times more likely to
stumble or fall than those with good
hearing. Falls can have an impact on our
physical and mental health with pain,
distress, and the loss of both confidence
and independence occurring as a result.
We know
there are
other factors
that could
increase the
chance of a fall but improving
someone’s hearing can really help
reduce the risk.
At any of our ‘Hear in’ clinics we can
help by offering both ear wax removal
and FREE hearing assessments where you
will be given the best possible
independent advice without any
pressure.
We are a local, family business and pride
ourselves on our excellent, professional
service in clinic facilities are second to
none. Our hearing aid solutions come
with a 60-day money back guarantee,
up to 5 yr warranty and comprehensive
aftercare for the life of the hearing aids.
There’s nothing to lose by trying, and we
will support you every step of the way.
We are lucky to be able to make a
difference to peoples listening lives every
single day. Ears are what we love, and
what we do! Why not get in touch and
start this New Year with new ears!

Gold Rush: Realise the True
Value of Your Gold at Auction
With gold prices remaining strong and demand for
quality jewellery high, Staffordshire auction house
Cuttlestones is encouraging locals to take a fresh
look at forgotten treasures tucked away in drawers
and jewellery boxes.
The Penkridge sale room’s recent Winter Antiques
Auction demonstrated just how buoyant the market is.
Gold jewellery performed exceptionally well, with a 9ct
gold charm bracelet adorned with 20 charms achieving
£1,700; a hallmarked 9ct graduating double Albert chain
with T-bar and medallion fob selling for £1,200; and an
18ct gold manual wind pocket watch also fetching
£1,200. These impressive performances sit alongside
strong prices from earlier sales, such as a 9ct rose gold
Albert chain mounted with sovereigns that achieved
£1,900; a Georgian gold intaglio ring selling for £900; an
art deco sapphire and diamond ring realising £1,300 and
a Royal Navy divers’ watch selling for £1,400.
These results prove that selling gold at auction can far
exceed scrap value. Rather than being weighed in by
the gram, items are assessed for craftsmanship, age,
rarity and desirability — factors that can significantly
elevate their value under the hammer. From inherited
rings and broken chains to vintage charms and pocket
watches, now is a great time to discover their true
worth.
This 9ct gold charm bracelet, with 20 charms, sold for £1,700 –
way above its scrap value

Interview with Russell
Hales, a Member of the Men
Who Foster Group in
Telford
Thank you for joining me today,
Russell. As a foster carer myself, it’s
a pleasure to have you on board. I
understand you’re a member of the
Men Who Foster Group that's based
in Telford.
Firstly, how would you describe
what this group is about to someone
who may never have heard of it?
I would describe the Men Who
Foster group as a safe space for male
caregivers to get together and
openly talk about anything they feel
they need to share. The group isn’t
just about fostering, even though
that’s the binder of what brings us
together.
Were you nervous or hesitant before
attending your first meet-up? What
helped you overcome that?
I wasn’t nervous about attending the
group; I just didn’t feel the need to
go to the meetings and denied
myself the pleasure for three years.
When I was first asked to attend the
support group (as it was introduced
to me), I said to myself, “Hey, I’m a
strong northerner and I don’t need
support.”
But the group is so much more than
that, as I learned over the first
couple of months. The social
workers who welcomed me at my
first meet made me feel part of the
group from the outset.
Have there been moments in the
group that have felt especially
supportive or meaningful?
My wife and I are a strong unit and
we talk about our day every evening
to decompress, so I’ve never really
felt the need to vent to the guys. But
as a strong group of friends, we’ve
helped each other through some
tough times.
There are no silly questions—if you
need to ask, go for it. Between us,
we will hopefully have the answers,
and if not, a social worker will do
their best to find them, as long as
you agree to your information being
shared.
What is it like being surrounded by
other men who understand fosterrelated
challenges?
This is why I’m a big advocate for
the group and for mental health. I
find that when you try to describe
fostering to people who haven’t been
part of the care system, they often
feel it’s a little hard-hitting to hear.
At Men Who Foster, no one is
shocked by the stories you have to
tell, no matter how harrowing they
may be.
How does talking to other men in
similar roles differ from talking to
friends or family outside foster care?
We come from so many different
backgrounds and age groups, and we
can talk about anything. I tend to
find that people outside fostering
usually say the same thing: “You do
an amazing thing inviting strangers
into your home—I could never do
it.”
To sum it up, we are all very similar
and just seem to understand each
other. We’re here for the same
reason.
How has the group helped you
handle the emotional side of
fostering (stress, burnout,
attachment, loss)?
The Men Who Foster support
network has a wealth of knowledge.
Most evenings, one of us will
mention one of the topics you’ve
listed, followed by others sharing
their experiences.
As men, we've always been made to
feel we need to be strong for our
children and our partners. But when
meeting with the group, they can tell
if you’re going through a tough
time—we just seem to get each
other.
Is there anything about being a male
foster carer that you feel is
misunderstood?
People always look to my wife as the
main caregiver, but we are a team,
and we work 50/50 to ensure the
children in our care get the most
from us while living in our home.
What would you say to another man
who is considering joining but is
feeling unsure?
Just come along and give it a go.
We’re all in the same situation, and
you might just make one or two
friends you know you can call on at
any time—day or night.
Can you share a moment in your
fostering journey that reminded you
why this work matters?
The first little girl I handed over to
her adoptive mum was the hardest
thing I’ve ever done. Thankfully, we
are still in contact with her. Every
time we see her, it reminds me why
we began fostering in the first place.
How do members in the group
support each other when tough
topics arise?
Most topics in fostering are tough.
This is why we decided to set up a
WhatsApp group alongside the
meet-ups. Through this, we can
support each other 24/7.
We look out for one another’s
wellbeing and always follow up
contact after discussing sensitive
topics.
What do you think this group
accomplishes collectively for men in
foster care roles?
This group offers mutual support for
various gender-specific challenges
that we, as men who foster, face.
In what ways does the group reduce
stigma around men being emotional
or asking for support?
By continuing to provide a safe,
non-judgmental space where
emotional vulnerability is
normalised.
We all have a lot to offer the group,
and no one should ever be afraid to
ask for help from a fellow
caregiver—there’s a very good
chance someone in the group has
been through something similar.
Thank you for your time, Russell.
For anyone reading who may be
interested in joining the Men Who
Foster group, where should they go
for further information and how can
they get connected?
The group is specific to Telford and
Wrekin, so speak with your
supervising social worker, or contact
Sharon Rees at Telford Fostering,
who can pass on my contact details.
Once connected with me, I will add
you to our WhatsApp group.
Sharon also releases a monthly
newsletter with details of future
meet-ups. We welcome anyone
looking for support through the
highs and lows of fostering to get in
touch and meet the group.

Religion
Why More Young People
Are Turning Back to God
For decades, the prevailing narrative
in the UK has been one of steady
secularisation. Church attendance
declined, faith was seen as oldfashioned,
and younger generations
were thought to have left religion
behind for good. Yet quietly and
unexpectedly, something is changing.
Across Britain, more young people
are rediscovering God — and not out
of habit or obligation, but by choice.
asking difficult questions rather than accepting
inherited beliefs. This curiosity-driven approach allows
young people to engage with faith authentically, on their
own terms.
There is also a growing disillusionment with materialism
and individualism. The promise that success, wealth or
self-optimisation would deliver happiness has fallen flat
for many. Faith, by contrast, offers a counter-cultural
message: that worth is not measured by productivity,
appearance or status, but by something deeper and more
enduring. In a culture that constantly demands more,
belief in God can feel like an act of resistance.
Importantly, this movement is not about fear or
indoctrination. It reflects a generation searching for
moral clarity in a complex world. Questions about
purpose, right and wrong, suffering and hope are
resurfacing — and religion, particularly Christianity in
the UK context, provides a framework for engaging with
them. For some young people, God represents stability
in a rapidly changing society.
This quiet revival may not look like the packed pews of
the past, but it is no less significant. It is personal,
reflective and often invisible to traditional metrics. As
Britain continues to navigate social and economic
uncertainty, it is perhaps unsurprising that younger
generations are seeking something — or someone —
greater than themselves. In turning to God, many are
not rejecting modern life, but trying to make sense of it.
Key Statistics on Young People and Religion in
the UK
This renewed interest in faith cannot be separated from
the pressures facing today’s youth. Young people are
coming of age in an era marked by uncertainty:
economic instability, housing insecurity, global conflict,
climate anxiety and the lingering psychological effects of
the pandemic. Traditional milestones — stable careers,
home ownership, long-term security — feel increasingly
out of reach. In this context, faith offers something
society often does not: meaning, hope and reassurance
in a world that feels fragile.
Mental health plays a significant role in this shift. Rates
of anxiety, depression and loneliness among young
adults in the UK are at record highs. Despite being more
digitally connected than any generation before them,
many report feeling isolated and unsupported. Faith
communities offer tangible human connection — shared
rituals, regular gatherings and a sense of belonging that
social media cannot replicate. For some, turning to God
is not about doctrine, but about finding peace,
grounding and emotional resilience.
Unlike previous generations, today’s young believers are
not necessarily returning to traditional religious
structures. Many are exploring faith outside formal
institutions, blending spirituality with modern life. They
are listening to podcasts, following faith-based creators
online, attending informal worship gatherings and
1. Belief in God is rising among young adults
- YouGov polling shows that belief in God among 18- to
24-year-olds in Britain has almost tripled in just three
and a half years — from 16% in August 2021 to around
45% in January 2025.
- In another YouGov snapshot, belief among 18–24s rose
from 16% to 39–45% between 2021 and 2025, while
atheism in that age group dropped from 49% to 32%
over the same period.
2. Young people’s church attendance is
increasing
- Research from The Quiet Revival (Bible Society /
YouGov) found that the proportion of 18–24-year-olds
who attend church at least once a month rose from 4%
in 2018 to 16% in 2024 — a four-fold increase.
- Overall monthly attendance in the UK grew from 8% of
adults in 2018 to 12% in 2024 — an increase of more
than 50% in six years.
3. Engagement with spirituality and practices is
notable
- Around 51% of young adults aged 18–24 reported
engaging with some form of spiritual practice in the last
six months, and 40% said they prayed at least monthly,
suggesting deeper patterns of personal belief and
devotion.
4. Comparative historical context (secular
backdrop)
- Earlier surveys showed that historically a large
majority of British young adults identified as nonreligious.
For example, research before these recent
trends found that about 70% of 16–29-year-olds said
they had no religion and only about 7% attended
religious services weekly

Inspiring young
minds
At Wolverhampton Grammar Junior and Infants, we pride
ourselves on treating every child as a unique, individual
person. Children thrive under our exceptional pastoral
care, rich and varied curriculum, and flexible learning
environment.
The Wolverhampton Grammar Junior and Infants setting
is conveniently located on the same site as
Wolverhampton Grammar School, enabling pupils to
make the most of the facilities of the senior school, as
well as having lessons with some of the senior subject
specialist teachers.
Academic success
No child in Wolverhampton Grammar Junior and Infants
goes unnoticed. Our small class sizes allow for individual
learning, enabling your child to thrive.
We incorporate digital learning into the classroom which
is not at the expense of books and face-to-face teaching
but to enhance traditional teaching methods. Every child
in Year 3 upwards has their own iPad and this allows
them to engage with the lesson at their own pace,
develop their own recording and investigative skills and
master the digital skills that will set them up for the
modern world.
Growing in confidence
As expected, academic standards are high, and our end of
year assessment results are significantly above the
independent school national average. Outside the
classroom, all children learn to read music, with wholeclass
instrumental lessons running throughout different
year groups. Similarly, on the sports field, we strive to
create the perfect balance of celebrating excellence with
ensuring inclusivity.
Children flourish in our kind, caring, and supportive
environment. We only have three school rules: we are
always kind, we are always polite, and we always try our
best.
“Our unique approach to learning allows your child
to develop strengths; form friendships and new
interests; and to become more independent and
curious about the world around them.”
James Griffiths, Head of Junior & Infants

January Reset: Starting
the New Year Right with
Your Dog
January is a time of fresh starts,
quieter routines and good
intentions — and for dog
owners, it’s the perfect
opportunity to refocus on the
needs of our four-legged
companions. After the
excitement and disruption of
the festive season, many dogs
benefit from a return to calm,
consistency and connection.
Mental stimulation is just as important as exercise at
this time of year. With fewer daylight hours, many dogs
experience boredom, which can lead to restlessness or
destructive behaviour. Puzzle feeders, scent games and
short training sessions are simple ways to engage your
dog’s brain indoors. Even ten minutes of focused activity
can make a noticeable difference to a dog’s mood and
behaviour.
January is also an ideal time to review your dog’s health.
Post-Christmas weight gain is common, particularly if
festive treats have crept into daily routines. Returning to
measured portions and balanced nutrition helps support
long-term wellbeing.
Booking routine vet
check-ups, dental
assessments or nail
trims now can prevent
issues later in the year
and provides
reassurance for
owners.
Christmas can be overwhelming for dogs. Busy homes,
visitors, altered walk times and indulgent treats often
lead to overstimulation and unsettled behaviour. As the
decorations come down, January offers a chance to reestablish
familiar routines. Regular feeding times,
predictable walks and consistent bedtime habits help
dogs feel secure, particularly during the darker winter
months when daylight is limited.
Exercise remains essential, even when cold mornings
and short days make it tempting to stay indoors. Daily
walks provide more than just physical activity — they
offer mental stimulation, confidence-building and
emotional balance. Winter walks can be especially
enriching, with new scents and quieter routes. Investing
in reflective collars, leads and dog coats helps keep
outings safe and comfortable, particularly during early
mornings or evenings.
Training often rises to
the top of New Year
resolutions, and winter is a
great time to reinforce good
habits. Whether it’s improving recall, lead manners or
addressing anxiety, consistency is key. Many dogs
become more reactive or restless during winter due to
reduced stimulation, and seeking advice from a qualified
trainer or behaviourist can be a positive step forward.
January can also be emotionally challenging for owners.
The post-holiday lull and grey days affect many of us —
and this is where dogs quietly shine. They provide
structure, purpose and companionship when motivation
is low. A daily walk, no matter how short, offers fresh
air, routine and a reason to step outside, benefitting
both dog and owner alike.
Ultimately, January isn’t about making drastic changes.
It’s about small, thoughtful improvements that support
your dog’s wellbeing throughout the year. By focusing on
routine, enrichment, health and connection, the New
Year becomes not just a reset for us, but a positive and
reassuring start for the dogs who share our lives.

Bathrooms
Crafting Beautiful
Bathrooms in the Heart
of Shropshire
In the world of home improvement, few
spaces offer as much day-to-day impact
as the bathroom. It’s where we begin and
end our days; where style meets
practicality, and where thoughtful design
can elevate not just a room, but the way
we live. For homeowners across
Shropshire and the West Midlands
seeking a bathroom that combines
craftsmanship, creativity and a genuinely
personal service, Edit Bathrooms has
rapidly become a trusted local name.
From there, the process becomes a collaborative one.
Edit Bathrooms’ designers conduct a detailed home
survey to capture accurate measurements and assess the
technical needs of the project. This groundwork allows
them to craft bespoke designs that are not just stylish,
but functional and tailored to the room’s layout. Clients
are then shown 3D visualisations, providing clarity and
confidence well before installation begins.
Quality is at the heart of every Edit Bathrooms project.
They carefully source premium fixtures, fittings and
finishes, drawing on industry expertise to guide
selections that balance aesthetics, performance and
value. By managing product ordering and logistics on
behalf of the homeowner, the team ensures a smoother,
more cohesive build phase.
Installation is where the Edit Bathrooms approach truly
shines. Their skilled professionals handle all aspects of
fitting — from plumbing and tiling to electrics and
finishing touches — coordinating trades and timelines so
the whole process feels seamless. The aim is simple: to
deliver beautiful results with minimal disruption to
daily life. At the end of the project, Edit Bathrooms
conducts a thorough walkthrough to make sure every
detail meets its high standards, and offers ongoing
support should any needs arise.
The company’s reputation for excellence is reflected in
glowing feedback from clients across Shropshire and
beyond. Homeowners repeatedly praise Edit Bathrooms
for their professionalism, clear communication and
meticulous workmanship. Reviewers commonly
highlight how the team “made the whole process
effortless” and delivered results that surpassed
expectations — all with a friendly, approachable manner
that made the renovation experience genuinely
enjoyable.
For many clients, the transformation goes deeper than
the physical space: a well-designed bathroom can
change how a home feels, adding calm, comfort and joy
to everyday routines. Whether it’s a sleek new en-suite,
a family bathroom refresh or a complete redesign, Edit
Bathrooms delivers spaces that are both beautiful and
practical, enhancing both lifestyle and property value.
Based just outside Shrewsbury, Edit Bathrooms
specialises in transforming ordinary bathrooms into
bespoke, beautifully designed spaces that reflect
individual tastes and lifestyles. Their approach is
refreshingly client-centred — rooted in careful listening,
expert guidance and hands-on delivery from concept
through to completion.
One of the hallmarks of the Edit Bathrooms experience
is the way projects begin: with a free, no-obligation
consultation tailored around the homeowner’s
preference. Whether in the comfort of your own home,
at their showroom or even virtually, the team takes time
to truly understand what you want your bathroom to feel
like, how you use the space and what’s most important
to you. This early focus on communication helps ensure
that each design feels personal and purposeful.
In a market where renovation projects can sometimes be
daunting — bogged down by delays, communication gaps
or unexpected costs — Edit Bathrooms stands out for its
clarity, care and commitment to customer satisfaction.
Their personalised service, attention to detail and
passion for quality design have made them a trusted
partner for homeowners across Shropshire.
As more local families seek to create homes that are not
just functional, but genuinely uplifting, Edit Bathrooms
continues to shine as a company that combines creative
vision with practical expertise — one beautifully crafted
bathroom at a time.

Garden
Get Your Winter Garden
Sorted Now — So It’s Ready
to Flourish in Spring
As the days shorten and temperatures
drop across the UK, many
homeowners retreat indoors and put
thoughts of the garden on the back
burner. But winter is actually one of
the best times to be proactive —
especially if you want your outdoor
space to burst into life come spring.
With a little attention now, you can
save yourself time and effort later,
and even tackle bigger projects like a
driveway makeover with trusted
professionals.
Here’s how to make the most of your winter
garden and prepare for the vibrant months
ahead.
1. Clean Up and Clear Out
Before the frost sets in fully, take time to give your
garden a good clearout:
- Remove dead plants and weeds — clearing away dead
foliage helps prevent pests and disease overwintering in
your borders.
- Trim back perennials that have finished for the year,
but leave seed heads on some if you want to attract
winter birds.
- Tidy beds and borders so that soil can breathe and
rainwater doesn’t pool and rot roots.
This isn’t glamorous work, but a tidy garden makes
everything easier in spring — and you’ll thank yourself
when it comes time to plant.
2. Feed and Protect Your Soil
Healthy soil equals healthy plants. In winter:
- Add organic matter like wellrotted compost or garden
manure to beds — this improves structure and drainage.
- Mulch borders with bark or compost to protect roots
from frost and enrich the soil over the winter months.
- If your lawn is still going, give it a final feed with
winter lawn fertiliser to aid resilience through cold
weather.
Winter is also a good time to check soil pH and adjust
with lime or sulphur if needed, so everything is balanced
for spring planting.
3. Prune With Purpose
Winter is the ideal time to prune many shrubs and trees
while they’re dormant:
- Remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches.
- Shape roses and deciduous shrubs to encourage
healthier growth.
- Avoid pruning spring flowering plants until after
they’ve bloomed — pruning them now would remove
next season’s flowers.
Get this sorting done in winter while the structure of
your plants is visible and you’re not distracted by lush
summer growth..
4. Plan and Prepare Ahead
A quiet garden in winter is the perfect opportunity to
plan for spring:
- Sketch out ideas for new beds, containers, or features.
- Make a planting plan and order seeds and bulbs now —
many popular varieties sell out.
- Check tools and equipment — sharpen secateurs,
service your mower, and replace worn gloves so you’re
ready when the season starts.
If you’ve been dreaming of changes — now’s the time to
think big.
5. Consider the Hard Landscaping
Winter isn’t just for plants — it’s a great time to think
about the hard landscaping that shapes your outdoor
space. If you’ve been unhappy with your driveway for a
while, why not use the quieter months to get it sorted?
A driveway makeover not only enhances your property’s
kerb appeal but can also improve drainage and usability
all year round. Companies like PaveLine Driveways
Ltd specialise in transforming tired driveways into
attractive, functional spaces using block paving, resin,
or gravel options tailored to your home. Get the
groundwork done now so your garden — and home
exterior — can enjoy a fresh, coordinated look for
spring. www.pavelinedrivewaysltd.co.uk
Winter often brings rain and frost, so planning a
driveway project now means contractors can work
during quieter periods and be ready before the busiest
spring and summer months.
6. Invite Experts In Where Needed
Not everything is DIY — and that’s fine. Winter is
actually a good time to book consultations with:
- Arborists to check tree safety.
- Landscape designers to review your garden layout.
- Groundworkers for drainage and patio or driveway
projects.
Getting professionals involved now gives you clear plans
and timelines — and helps avoid the lastminute rush as
the weather warms.
Your garden doesn’t have to hibernate this winter. With
thoughtful clearing, pruning, soil care, and a bit of
planning, you can set yourself up for a spectacular
spring. And if you’re thinking about larger
improvements — like a driveway transformation — now
is a smart time to take action. By preparing now, you’ll
be ready to enjoy your garden and outdoor spaces to the
fullest as soon as the sun returns.

Accessorise Your Home This
Winter — Room by Room
Winter’s cooler months are the
perfect time to refresh your home
with cosy, stylish touches that make
every room feel inviting. From warm
textiles to thoughtful accents, here’s
how to accessorise each space for
comfort, personality and seasonal
flair.
Bedroom: Create a Sanctuary for Rest
Winter is when your bedroom should feel like a
sanctuary. Focus on comfort, softness and calm.
- Layered bedding: flannel sheets, velvet cushions, and a
weighted throw instantly add warmth.
- Bedside lights: soft, golden bulbs or fairy lights are
gentle on winter evenings.
- Small accessories: a ceramic tray for jewellery, a
favourite book and a candle complete a cosy nighttime
ritual.
Muted blues, warm greys and terracotta tones bring
seasonal calm without overwhelming your space.
Living Room: Layer Textures & Warm Tones
Your living room is where you’ll spend most of your
winter evenings — so make it feel like winter in the best
way. Think layered textures and rich, warm tones:
- Chunky knit
throws & bouclé
cushions add soft
texture for chilly
evenings.
- Warm metallics
(brass, bronze) in
candle holders
and frames bring
a cosy glow.
- Candles &
lanterns instantly
uplift the
ambience while
adding gentle
light.
- Subtle seasonal
accents like faux
foliage or muted berry displays.
Aim for comfort without clutter: soft layers that you
want to touch and a palette that complements your
existing furniture.
Kitchen: Functional Cosiness with Style
The kitchen is about more than cooking — it’s now a
space to gather, sip tea and enjoy slow mornings.
- Swap summer linens for thicker tea towels and runner
mats in autumnal tones.
- Herb pots by the windowsill keep greenery alive and
fresh through winter.
- Add insulated carafes
and stylish mugs on
display for practical
cosy charm.
- A neat tray with
infuser teapot,
seasonal teas and
honey turns brewing
into décor.
Choose accessories that work and warm — texture and
practicality married together.
Hallway: First Impressions with Function
Your hallway sets the tone for the rest of your home —
especially in winter when coats and boots are daily
essentials.
- Boot trays & quality mats keep slush and mud at bay
while looking neat.
- Cushioned bench or
pouffe for putting on
boots adds comfort and
style.
- Mirrors and soft
lighting expand darker
hallways and create
warmth.
- A dish for keys and
gloves keeps things
organised and stylish.
Choose practical pieces
that look good while
tackling winter basics.
Bonus Tip: Seasonal Scents & Sounds
Little touches like scented diffusers with cedarwood,
orange or cinnamon and a good playlist of mellow tunes
can make your whole home feel snug — without needing
a complete redesign.
Accessorising for winter isn’t about drastic changes —
it’s about enhancing comfort and mood in each room.
With thoughtful layering, rich textures, and pieces that
are both practical and stylish, your home will feel ready
for cosy days inside, family gatherings, and quiet winter
nights.

clutter-free space can all help promote deeper sleep
during the winter months.
At the heart of this environment is your bed. An
unsupportive or worn-out mattress can disrupt sleep
without you even realising it, leading to restless nights
and aching mornings. Choosing the right
mattress supports spinal alignment, reduces pressure
points, and allows your muscles to fully relax.
Choosing the Right Mattress for Rest and

Sleep Health for 2026: Rest, Renewal, and
the Energy of the Fire Horse
As we step into 2026, health and wellbeing continue to
take centre stage in how we live our lives. More than
ever, people are recognising that true wellness doesn’t
begin with intense routines or quick fixes — it begins
with quality rest. Sleep is the foundation of both
physical and mental health, and the year ahead invites
us to take it seriously.
In the Chinese zodiac, 2026 is the Year of the Fire
Horse.
Traditionally, the Horse symbolises energy, movement,
independence, and vitality, while the Fire element
represents passion, warmth, and transformation.
Together, they point to a year of momentum and drive —
but also one that demands balance. To move forward
with strength and clarity, proper rest is essential.
Why Sleep Health Matters More Than Ever
Modern life is fast-paced and constantly connected,
making it easy to overlook the importance of sleep. Yet
research consistently shows that good sleep supports
immune function, heart health, memory, mood, and
emotional resilience. Poor sleep, on the other hand, can
contribute to stress, fatigue, weakened immunity, and
long-term health issues.
As we enter a year associated with high energy and
activity, protecting p becomes even more important.
Rest is what allows the body to recover, repair, and
prepare for each new day. A well-supported night’s sleep
helps you wake up focused, energised, and ready to
embrace the opportunities ahead.
Creating a Bedroom That Supports
Wellbeing
Your sleep environment plays a major role in how well
you rest. A calm, comfortable bedroom
encourages relaxation and signals to your body that it’s
time to unwind. Soft lighting, natural textures, and a
Different bodies need different levels of support.
Memory foam mattresses are known for relieving
pressure and adapting to your shape, making them ideal
for those with joint or back discomfort. Pocket-spring
mattresses provide responsive support and airflow,
helping regulate temperature — especially important for
overall sleep comfort. Hybrid designs combine comfort
and structure, offering balance for a wide range of
sleepers.
If you share your bed, a mattress that limits movement
transfer can significantly improve sleep quality for both
partners. When sleep is uninterrupted, the body can
move through its natural sleep cycles more effectively,
supporting long-term health.
Aligning with the Energy of 2026
The Fire Horse year encourages action, ambition, and
forward motion — but none of that is sustainable
without rest. Prioritising sleep is not about slowing
down; it’s about building resilience and strength. A good
bed supports the body night after night, allowing you to
meet the year’s energy with clarity and confidence.
As January and February invite reflection and renewal,
now is the perfect time to assess your sleep health.
Investing in the right bed is an investment in wellbeing,
helping you stay balanced, grounded, and ready for the
year ahead.
In 2026, let sleep be your foundation — because when
you rest well, everything else follows.

Career
Is It Time for a New Career?
How to Make the Leap and
Achieve Your Goals
For many of us, the idea of changing
careers can feel both exhilarating and
terrifying. Perhaps you’re feeling
unfulfilled in your current role, craving a
new challenge, or simply seeking better
work-life balance. Whatever the
motivation, the truth is that switching
careers is increasingly common in the
UK, especially as people seek jobs that
align with their values, passions, and
lifestyle. But how do you know if it’s the
right time to make the leap—and how
Research and Planning
Once you’ve identified a desire to change, the next step
is research. Take stock of your skills, interests, and
experience, and explore careers that align with them.
Online resources like Prospects, Reed, and the UK
Government’s National Careers Service offer
comprehensive guidance on job sectors, qualifications,
and salary expectations.
Networking is another critical step. Reach out to
professionals in your desired field, attend industry
events, or join LinkedIn groups to gain insight into the
realities of the role. This will help you make informed
decisions and may even uncover opportunities before
they are advertised..
Upskilling and Education
Sometimes a career shift requires new skills or
qualifications. The good news is that in the UK, there
are plenty of accessible options. Vocational courses,
online learning platforms like FutureLearn or Coursera,
and apprenticeships can help you bridge the gap. Even
short courses or certifications can enhance your CV and
give you the confidence to transition successfully.
Setting Realistic Goals
Changing careers rarely happens overnight. Setting
clear, achievable goals will help you stay on track and
measure your progress. Break your journey into stages:
research and planning, skill development, networking,
and applying for roles. This structured approach reduces
overwhelm and provides motivation as you tick off each
milestone. It’s also vital to manage expectations around
finances. A new career may initially mean a lower salary
or entry-level role. Planning ahead and budgeting for a
transitional period can make the process smoother and
less stressful.
Taking the Leap
Recognising the Signs
Before diving headfirst into a new career, it’s important
to pause and reflect. Key indicators that it might be time
for a change include:
* Persistent dissatisfaction: If Monday mornings fill you
with dread or you feel disengaged at work day after day,
it could signal that your current path isn’t right for you.
* Stagnation: Lack of growth opportunities or feeling
that your skills aren’t being challenged can make it hard
to stay motivated.
* Shifting priorities: Life changes, such as family
commitments, health considerations, or a desire for
more flexibility, can prompt a career rethink.
* Curiosity for something new: A strong interest in a
different industry or role may be a sign that your
passions are pulling you elsewhere.
When the time comes to make the move, be proactive.
Tailor your CV and cover letter to highlight transferable
skills, and prepare to discuss your career change
confidently in interviews. Demonstrating enthusiasm,
resilience, and adaptability can make you a compelling
candidate, even if you’re switching industries.
Maintaining Momentum
Finally, remember that a career change is not just about
landing a new job—it’s about growth and long-term
satisfaction. Continue learning, seek mentorship, and

Sport, Econ, or Normal modes. Hit the Sport option, and the
throttle response sharpens for a more engaging drive, while
steering wheel paddles allow you to adjust the level of energy
regeneration.
Practical and spacious Interior
Despite its compact appearance, it offers plenty of room. The
cabin feels light, airy, and upmarket, with a commanding
driving position and logically placed controls for minimal
distraction.
Its ingenious one-pull folding ‘Magic’ rear seats allow long
items like skis, bikes, or camping equipment to be
transported with ease. Boot capacity is generous for a car of
its size, complemented by practical features like a hardwearing
rubber mat for wet equipment like wellies.
Honda produces some stylish cars. The Civic, and particularly
the thrilling Type-R, springs to mind. While the new HR-V
may not share that model’s glamour, it is a good-looking,
practical vehicle featuring a new colour palette, more
technically advanced options, and improved economy.
This mid-range Advance model adds LED headlights with
cornering and adaptive beam functions, a power tailgate, and
a heated leather steering wheel.
With its sleek profile and full-width LED lightbar, this
compact SUV has a stylish road presence. This is highlighted
by a signature crystal black grille, darkened LED headlamps,
smart alloys, and an elegant rear lightbar.
Intuitive cabin
At the heart of the cabin is a clear nine-inch touchscreen,
controlling smartphone connectivity, infotainment, and
navigation. These are all accessible through the updated My
Honda+ app on your smartphone, which lets you remotely
control and monitor the vehicle with functions for locking
doors, starting the engine, and checking fuel levels.
Composed ride and handling
Ride and handling are composed. While the driving dynamics
emphasise comfort, revisions to the suspension and steering
provide more direct cornering and a smoother ride. Honda
says noise and vibration have been reduced, contributing to a
quiet and refined cabin – a claim that was hard to argue with.
Safety Systems
Safety kit is comprehensive, with a suite of active and passive
safety systems as standard, including a full range of airbags.
The Honda SENSING technology uses a new wider-angle
high-definition camera for enhanced collision and lane
departure warning, making it feel as safe as houses.
The Verdict
This compact SUV is a package that successfully blends
striking style with very good real-world efficiency. It has a
practical and well-built interior and a relaxed, comfortable
driving experience.
While it may not excite driving enthusiasts like the Type R, it
excels as a rational and sensible choice for everyday life.
Clever and economical
The clever and economical e:HEV powertrain pairs a 1.5-litre
petrol engine with two electric motors, generating 129bhp. It
seamlessly switches between electric, hybrid, and enginedrive
modes to optimise efficiency, achieving a claimed 52.3
mpg – a figure I matched and occasionally exceeded.
The performance is decent, not Type-R bonkers, but
genuinely impressive in its efficiency. Drivers can select

MINI Cooper S Exclusive Auto
By Bill McCarthy
performance, including features like a dash cam.
An optional head-up display projects key information directly
into the driver's line of sight, minimising distraction.
For sustainability, the dashboard is made from recycled
polyester using a special knitting method, and the car
features the colourful MINI Experience Modes. The driver
picks one of seven modes to alter the screen display to create
a relaxed ambience.
On the road
This Exclusive model features a 204 bhp four-cylinder engine
and automatic transmission. It hits 62 mph in 6.8 seconds.
Quick, yes, but many EVs are quicker, though they lack the
growl of the two-litre engine under acceleration and the sheer
driving pleasure. Economy is decent as well, with a claimed
44.5mpg seeming pretty close to the mark.
The suspension and damping are tuned to offer both comfort
and agile handling, making every drive feel composed and
responsive. This is complemented by precise steering and
powerful brakes.
The result is the quintessential Mini experience – engaging
and surefooted, with a satisfying engine note and a trademark
grip that makes navigating winding country roads a delight.
The MINI Cooper, in its many forms - from the iconic Cooper
to the relatively huge Countryman - consistently updates its
1960s heritage with modern technology and style. It remains
an aspirational brand, not cheap, but a world away from the
original Alec Issigonis-designed Minis of the mid-60s. Those
became a cultural icon, and the modern Cooper harks back to
that rally success, offering extra driving appeal that echoes its
three-time victory at the Monte Carlo Rally.
What's new?
There are three versions – Classic, Sport and the Exclusive
driven here – with a pricey, but not outrageous, sub-£30k
starting price. Then there are the optional extras…
Following hard on the heels of the latest three-door model,
this latest five-door S Exclusive offers more interior space
and innovative technology while retaining the brand's
fantastic handling.
The extra doors transform it from a niche vehicle into a
usable everyday car. With sharp performance and a high-end
interior, the five-door is now more practical without losing its
charm and desirability.
Bigger and more dynamic
This model features a wheelbase that is 72mm longer than
the three-door version. This important change results in
more legroom and greater comfort for rear passengers.
Iconic design for the 21st century
The model retains the iconic MINI silhouette, characterised
by its short overhangs, long wheelbase, and large wheels. It
retains the familiar round headlights and an octagonal grille,
while the rear features clean surfaces and flush-fitting
twinkling, patterned tail lights. This helps deliver the Mini
uniqueness.
High tech interior
The cabin represents a significant leap forward, dominated by
a familiar but updated 24cm, dinner-plate-sized circular
OLED display that runs the MINI Operating System 9.
All major vehicle functions like infotainment, connectivity,
and navigation are controlled via this touchscreen or by using
the voice-activated "Hey MINI" Intelligent Personal
Assistant.
The screen also features a myriad of secondary controls
allowing targeted personalisation of the vehicle’s
Practicality and safety
The five-door design enhances everyday usability. Two
additional doors provide easy access to the rear seats, and the
278-litre boot – expandable to 941 litres with the seats folded
– feels more spacious than it is.
This practicality is complemented by safety features,
including a full suite of airbags, collision warning, automatic
emergency braking, and lane departure assist.
Are the options worth it?
This model comes packed with nearly £6k worth of options.
The Level 3 Pack is ideal for tech-savvy drivers or frequent
commuters who will regularly use advanced driver aids,
premium audio, and comfort features.
Overall, these options may be worth it if you value a fullyloaded,
high-tech driving experience and intend to use the
features. They may also enhance the car’s resale value.
