Liesl + Co
Liesl + Co has four new stylish sewing patterns for this season’s sewing.
The Alvalade Trousers are a classic trouser but this time for men. They look like dress trousers but feel more like sweatpants, and
designed for woven fabrics with some stretch. They include lots of lovely details like a classic zipper fly with zipper shield, angled

inseam is moved forward to give a comfortable and well-fitting trouser for every occasion.
The Cannes Wide-Legged Trousers are classic high-waisted, pleated-front, ultra-wide-legged trousers with a zipper fly, slanted
pockets, back darts for shaping, belt loops, and sash. These look good on all body shapes, and can be worn from day to night
with glamour and elegance. Sew them in a drapey fabric so they billow and move with you.
The Santa Rosa Top + Dress is a sophisticated pattern with a band collar, pop-over button placket, and dolman sleeves. It’s cut
loose with dropped shoulders and a centre-back box pleat. Make the top with cut-on dolman short sleeves, and the dress with a
self tie, curved shirttail hem, and long sleeves with classic cuffs.
The Sintra Halter Top + Dress has an elegant halter with a rounded neckband and gathered front. This is a statement piece that
can be worn alone or under a blazer. It closes with a simple button and buttonhole at the back. Make a classic seamless-front top,
or sew with a peekaboo V-slit neckline or flowy above-the-knee dress silhouette, the choice is yours!

MAKING THE
Sadie Trousers from Style Arc!
By Jacqui Smith
I think I may have found a new favourite fabric,
and it’s Bengaline!
My fabric choice
Bengaline has a long history and was originally made from
silk and cotton, nowadays it tends to be a rayon (plant-based
cellulose) blended with elastane. It’s generally a mid-weight
fabric with a lot of stretch but also it has great recovery making it
the perfect fabric for trousers, where you want some stretch, but
also a fabric that gives more of a tailored and smart appearance.
One key factor to note with Bengaline is that the stretch runs
along the length of the fabric rather than across. This means
that you’ll need to cut your pattern pieces out differently to the
layout shown on the instructions you are using. As the fabric
I used here is 150cm wide and it takes 1.5m so this wasn’t
difficult. Simply fold the fabric in half along the selvedge so that
you have a folded selvedge along both short sides and the two
raw edges matching along the opposite side to the fold. Then
simply proceed with the layout shown in the pattern, this way the
stretch will run around your body.
I pre-washed the fabric, but found it was worth overlocking
or zigzag stitching along the raw edges before I did this, as the
fabric does have a tendency to fray.
My pattern choice
I wanted a smart but comfortable pair of trousers for the
summer that could be worn with lots of different tops and
shoes. For this reason, I chose the Sadie trouser pattern from
Style Arc, as this has exactly the same elasticated waist as I
already have on some RTW trousers that I really like!
This design has exposed elastic around most of the waist,
apart from the very front, so you will need to choose a
matching or contrasting elastic with a nice finish. As with most
Style Arc patterns the instructions are fairly minimal. This is not
a problem apart from the finishing of the waist elastic. If you
need help with this, there are a couple of detailed instructions
on the internet plus Style Arc is always happy to help and send
more information or images if you need them. They are adding
more detailed instructions to their newer patterns and working
on revisions to the older ones as well.
The big advantage I find with their patterns is the fit and
these were no exception. The trousers fitted very well with no
adjustments apart from reducing the length of elastic used
for the waist. As the fabric has quite a lot of stretch, I also
continued the elastic through the waistband at the front of the
trousers, as this gave that section more stability. I also omitted
the small splits at the bottom of the legs.
Summary
These turned out exactly as
I had hoped! I know that I
will wear them throughout
the summer. They are so
comfortable and definitely
secret PJ’s!
EDITORS NOTES
THE PATTERN:
These are a great pull on trouser with a flat front and interestingly shaped pockets. The elastic is
a feature and comes from the front panel and continues across the back. The ankle length leg has
a very wearable and sophisticated tapered leg with a hem split. The top of the elastic sits on the
natural waist.
Other fabric suggestions include silk, linen, crepe or any light weight woven fabric. This
pattern comes in sizes 4-16 and 18-30.

THE FABRIC:
Jacqui chose the navy tile print Bengaline from Modelo’s Tiaret collection, which
is made from 73% Viscose, 23% Polyester and 4% Elastane and is perfect for
garments that need a little stretch. It comes in 7 plain colours and 4 print designs.

WELL-FITTING
TROUSERS
Julie Bonnar from The Pattern Pages
discusses things to consider when
making your first pair of trousers
Evaluate your wardrobe
Have a look through your wardrobe to see what trouser
styles you tend to like wearing, and evaluate what it is that
you really like about them and what you don’t! This will
help you choose the right pattern for you!
Take accurate body
measurements
Using a measuring tape, measure the following:
Outside leg – Measure from the start of the waist down
the outside of the hip to your ankle.
Inside leg – Measure the inside of the leg extending the
tape from the groin to your ankle.
Hip – Measure the widest point of your hips.
Thigh – Measure the circumference at the widest point
of your thigh.
Ankle – Measure around your ankle but allowing room
to get your foot through.
Groin – Measure the distance from the waistband at the
front to back waistband, following the groin line.
Choosing a simple pattern
Start by getting to grips with a simple trouser pattern,
perhaps without a zipper or a more flowy style that
doesn’t require as much fitting to begin with.
Make a toile
If there was a time when skipping making a toile was possible -
this really isn’t it! Make sure the fabric you choose is the same or
similar in weight and stretch to the fabric that you are intending
to sew with so that any fitting and alteration issues can be
sorted out at this stage. Don’t stress the flaws in your toile, this
is why you’re creating one in the first place!
TIP : Don’t worry about facings etc on a toile
Fitting
This is probably the thing that sewers dread the most. The key
is reading the wrinkles and finding a solution for any drag lines.
Go easy on yourself as even your favourite trousers will have
wrinkles and pull-lines! The goal is to have the least wrinkles
when standing!

Named Clothing –

Adjustments
Remember that most of us will need some sort of adjustment.
Make any adjustments slowly and one by one. This way, you
can tell which adjustment has worked and avoid making things
worse with another adjustment.
Start by making your first toile straight based on your
measurements on the pattern and see how it fits. Stand in front
of a full-length mirror with your feet hip-width apart. Are the
side seams in line with your legs? Does the waistband sit where
it’s most comfortable?
Look at the front to see if there are any drag lines along the
following areas - tummy, crotch, thighs or knees? Does anything
feel too tight or uncomfortable - these are areas that you might
like to adjust.
LOOKING FOR TIPS ON ADJUSTMENTS & FITS:
I recommend visiting the blogs and websites of
pattern company designers. For example, here’s a
Fabric choice
link to Closet Core Patterns
Select a fabric that’s easy to sew for your first pair of trousers
but avoid slippery fabrics like satin and fabrics that are harder
to manipulate like faux leather. Choose a fabric that is easy to
work with like cotton, viscose or linen.
The most common adjustments
and fixes:
Waistline - Does it gape away at the back? You will need to do
a swayback adjustment.
Is it too tight on the waist? You’ll need to remove the darts.
Bottom - Are they too tight on the bottom and gaping at
centre back? A seam method adjustment may be necessary.
Are they loose around the bottom? You will need to do a fisheye
dart or full tummy adjustment.
Crotch - Are they pulling at the crotch? You will need to lower
or raise this area.
Are there any tight horizontal lines? You will need to let out the
side seams a little.
Thigh - Are they pulling tight around the crotch or loose on the
thigh? You will need to add more width or take away from the
front of the trouser.
Leg - Is it tight across your leg? Then a full calf adjustment is
required.
Sewing tips
Grainlines - Make sure you cut your
fabric/pattern on the grainline to avoid
any twists in the fabric. Cut your pattern
and seam allowances accurately too.
Tiny adjustments - Trousers don’t
have much ease so even a small 5mm
adjustment can have a big effect on how
the garment fits.
Creasing - Always pay extra attention to
pressing and creasing your trousers for
best results.
Now you’re ready to make the perfect pair of trousers!

THE FABRIC
Most dip-dye and tie-dye fabrics are now dyed with fibre-reactive dyes, which work best on cellulose natural fibre such as cotton,
hemp, rayon, double gauze and linen. Rachel Pinheiro used the traditional navy double gauze from the Sibu collection to make
this slip dress from Friday Pattern Company for us. This Oeko-tex certified double gauze fabric is available in these colourways –
navy, ochre, tan/mustard and rust.

MEET
MÖNSTERFABRIKEN
We chat to Sara Hallander,
the designer behind this
Swedish pattern company
Tell us a little about Mönsterfabriken?
We are a small Swedish sewing pattern company based in
Stockholm. It all came about from a combination of the joy of
sewing, as well as many years as an experienced pattern maker.
My drive is in the details, I always end up making patterns with
some little extra detail, but it’s really important to me that the
garment’s design stands the test of time so that sewers will make
the patterns over and over again!
The name Mönsterfabriken might seem a bit odd to everyone
who isn’t from Sweden but in Swedish it means the Pattern Factory!
What makes your sewing patterns different
from other brands, and are your designs
influenced by where you live?
I like to think Mönsterfabriken provides a different kind of
style than what’s already available on the market.
I want the clothes to be feminine but also very practical,
and that challenge the sewist!
Our primary focus is on the fit, together with making
patterns easy to follow and alter. The designs are definitely
influenced by Scandinavian style, with clean, stylish line and
not so much fuss!
How many patterns do you have so far, and how
often do you release new patterns?
At present, I have 20 patterns with three of them recently
released a couple of weeks ago. The most recent ones are Ada
Coat, Polly Waistcoat and Lizzie Wrap skirt. I try to release new
patterns two to three times a year so I guess, the next time will
be at the beginning of the autumn.
Tell us about your pattern sizing and how you
grade for an inclusive range?
We have a slightly different approach when naming the sizes. I
think in general it’s so hard to tell your true size when using the
regular sizes such as S, M and L or equivalent.
Every brand has their own way of deciding what ‘size M’
should be and it’s rarely the same as another designer’s.
Therefore, we use a different standard that’s designed by the
EU to be a new ISO standard, where you use primary and
secondary measurements to decide your size. For example
for a top – you just measure your chest, which is the primary
measurement for a top, and then the sizes are named after that.
If your chest measurement is 88cm then your size is called 88.
For a bottom, you would need your seat measurement and if
the measurement is 98cm then your size is named 98!
The secondary measurement might in this case be the waist
or the inseam to give you a clearer idea if you need to make any
alterations for the garment to fit you perfectly. This is nothing
new since you always need to measure your body when choosing
your size if you are sewing clothes.
To me when making clothes for yourself, it’s all about your
body and nothing about standard sizes! The larger size range is
adapted to a slightly curvier body than the smaller since a larger
body shape doesn’t have the same shape as the smaller. Apart
from being two different base patterns for the two size ranges,
the grading is adapted to how the body changes with the sizes.
What do you love the most about sewing
your clothes?
I think the best thing about sewing my own clothes is all the
choices you have! When I create a pattern, I start with an idea
of what it should look like with a particular fabric in mind. As the
idea develops, I always end up with so many more ideas of fabric
combinations and possible areas of use! My own personal list of
sewing projects is endless!
What’s next for Mönsterfabriken? Do you have
any new patterns in the pipeline?
As I have just released three new patterns last month, at the
moment, I’m in the design phase for the next upcoming patterns
I hope to have them ready for sewers soon after the summer!
