A word from the Principal...
Dear Parents and Carers,
We are always trying to improve our provision at Ludgvan and engage with a number of individuals and
organisations throughout the year to provide us with robust scrutiny. This week we welcomed Deb Wring, an
Ofsted Inspector of 20 years to school to provide us with some focused feedback. It was a really valuable day
and her reflections highlight some of the many strengths she witnessed:
- The appointment of two members of staff, one a senior leader, to the roles of mental health and
well-being leads demonstrates the high priority placed on this aspect of personal development.
- The SENDCO displays a strong commitment to her role and to the needs of the pupils in her care.
Through the different monitoring activities, it is clear that teachers are meeting the needs of SEND support
pupils. Termly meetings with teachers are used to discuss their use of the pupil passports and to review pupils’
targets and evidence shows the impact of the monitoring.
- In EYFS, the curriculum focuses on key events in the year, global, national and local. The importance
of nature is evident through curriculum study including the incubating and observing the ducklings hatch and
tending plants bought from a visit to the local garden centre. The visit to the EYFS showed this planned focus
on the natural world as children were seen enjoying the purposeful learning with water, building houses from
natural materials and using Monet’s waterlilies as a stimulus for floral collage work
A huge well done to our Y2 campers who stayed in St Ives last week on residential. This is the first overnight
stay that is not on school grounds of our residential programme and we are really proud of how well they
dealt with what can be a real challenge at such a young age. They also had great fun and now fully prepared
for their next residential in Y3. Coincidentally, this took place just before Easter for our current Y3s and they
were fantastic, enjoying an action packed 3 days based in Coverack. Well done all.
You will have seen on Class Dojo that we are celebrating the King’s Coronation on Friday 5th May. We are
hoping for sunshine so that we can enjoy our Street Party lunch and crown competition outside. All children
are encouraged to wear their very smartest clothes so we all look the part!
As Monday is a bank holiday, I hope the weather is kind and you can all make the most of the 2-day weekend.
Kind regards,
Adam Anderson
Principal

Online Safety Ambassadors...
Ludgvan now have our very own Online Safety and computing ambassadors.
These amazing experts in their fields (showing an interest in computers), have
all offered their time and services to help the children at Ludgvan, as well as
the parents associated with our school, to understand key aspects related to
the digital world beyond our home and school work.
Watch out for helpful websites, apps and information, regarding keeping
children safe online, in our next newsletter.
We intend to keep everyone informed on a monthly basis, and we are
extremely keen to raise the profile of being safe online.
Thank you to: Mason, Connor, Brandon and Joel from year 6 and Hugo, Archie
and Danny from Year 5, for offering their support with this important topic.

EYFS
EYFS have been immersed in the world of ducks since we returned from the
holidays! We have been learning about the life cycles of plants, animals and
humans. Last term Mr Richards put some duck eggs in an incubator in the
classroom and we watched them with great anticipation. We were very
excited to see that the ducklings had hatched on our return to school after
Easter. We have been busy trying to think of names and the children have
written some excellent suggestions!
Last week, we read a book called ‘The Odd Egg’. Everyone had their own egg to
look after. We created houses, decorated them and some of the children even
created little nests and tried to keep them warm to see if they would incubate.
This week, we have also been learning about the artist Monet. We have
experimented with colours collages. There have been some fantastic creations!

Year 1
In science the children have been learning all about their bodies. They enjoyed
finding out about their senses, particularly the tasting session and identifying
the smells!
There has been lots of excitement as we have started our new topic ‘How can
we look after our planet?’ We have been learning all about climate change and
global warming. They have produced lovely posters on how to help look after
the planet.
In RE the children are focusing on the creation story and have started to make
a beautiful book. They had to work with a partner to find and collect lots of
natural resources. They then had to make a picture using these objects. There
was lots of discussion about how we should care and look after things that are
special to us.

Year 2
Year 2 have had an incredibly busy and exciting couple of weeks. Last week,
they experienced their first overnight trip. Day 1 involved a morning of surfing
with Global Boarders. The children put their newly learnt skills into place on the
sand to begin with before moving into the sea and showcasing their talents.
There were beaming smiles and lots of laughter from everyone.
After warming up and enjoying their picnic lunch, we arrived at the hostel
where the children quickly settled in and found their new roommates for the
evening. We then had a brisk walk around St Ives and the children settled
down for the evening with their dinner, a film, snacks and hot chocolate.
In the morning, we ventured to Base Camp where the children thoroughly
enjoyed the clip and climb and soft play on offer. We have some very speedy,
confident climbers amongst us! It’s safe to say that their first residential was
a great success and one which we hope they will always remember (now that
they’ve caught up on their sleep!)
We had an exciting start to this week with a trip to Tregullas Farm. Despite the
very cold weather at the Lizard, the children threw themselves into the planned
activities and showed great skill and enthusiasm for pond dipping and feeding
the baby lambs. They discovered many living things such as dragonfly nymphs,
tadpoles and newts.

Year 3
Year 3 ended the spring term with an amazing residential trip to Coverack. The
children embraced the soggy start exploring Penrose Walk and Coverack. On
day two we visited the Eden project and learnt where our food comes from. On
our final day we visited Roskilly’s Farm and discovered how ice cream is made.
Of course we had to sample the ice cream before we came home!
The summer term has started well and the children have already visited Truro
museum to launch their new Egyptian topic. At the museum the children learnt
how to be Egyptian embalmers and they explored some Egyptian artefacts.
Since returning from our trip we have learnt more about the discovery of
Tutankamun’s tomb. They children used Beebot’s to travel through the
floorplan of the tomb and have started to make their own Tutankamun’s death
masks. They have also had great fun learning about the River Nile and they
have made their own board games to share facts about how it was used in ancient
times and how it is used today.
Well done Year 3, a great start to the summer term.
Broad and Balanced...
Year 4
Class 4 has been very busy over the last two weeks with all of their learning.
They have been writing setting descriptions in English which have included parenthesis,
metaphors, commas for clarity and many other key writing skills.
In maths, we have been understanding the relationship between fractions and
decimals. The children have had lots of fun in science this week, they have
been learning about electrical circuits and conductors. They completed an
experiment looking at different types of circuits and circuit symbols, then
moved on to testing which materials were good conductors and good
insulators.
We have just started collage in art and we are focusing on the local artist Glynn
Macey’s artwork of outdoor settings. The children completed their first plan and
design for their collage, thinking about what materials they used to create
different effects.

Year 5
Year 5 have been learning about the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons in History,
finding answers to the question ‘How did the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings
struggle for the power of Britain?’. They have really impressed us with their
enthusiastic learning and their interest in the battles and monarchs of the time.
The children are now working collaboratively in groups to create presentations
to show what legacies the Vikings left behind.
In PE, we have been mastering our dribbling skills in basketball, and forehand
and backhand swings in tennis. We look forward to applying these new skills in
a game in the coming weeks.
Broad and Balanced...
Year 6
This week, Year 6 have been learning about verb tenses in the perfect and
progressive form. This is a tricky concept to learn but all children gave it a very
good try and related some fantastically humourous sentences related to these.
We have also investigated our science unit about light. After re-visiting some
key knowledge from previous years, we explored what light is made from and
how it helps us to see objects through light reflection. We then made
observations for light refraction when objects are submerged into water, as well
as the light spectrum separating when travelling through glass prisms.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable and experimentation-based unit, which the
children enjoyed and learnt lots about.
