Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: Local favorite Mayer’s Tavern on 3rd Avenue in Cape
May. After the bridge heading into town, make the right just before
Tony’s Pizzeria and Restaurant and you’ll see it on your left across from
Miss Chris Fishing.
The vibe: The patio isn’t open yet for the season, so we snagged a
table inside next to the bar on a busy Tuesday night. There were lots
of familiar faces intermingling throughout the dining room and everyone
was enjoying themselves. Keep the patio in mind once the summer
approaches... it’s a great spot to catch the sunset while enjoying a bite!
The drinks: Mayer’s is one of the only spots we know that carries
a variety of orange wines. It pairs wonderfully with seafood, so we
couldn’t resist. This is also a formal plea for more places in town to
carry orange and natural wines!
The food: Courtney and Krystina indulged in all things seafood.
Starting off the meal was the dreamy smoked bluefish spread, fried local
calamari with lemon mayo and local clams with fregula, tomato and
Calabrian chile. We then moved on to their Raw Bar Tower packed with
local and fresh options, including shrimp and oysters and their famous
scallops. Lightly battered and fried until golden brown, the scallops are
served with fries and citrus slaw and our choice of sauces — Krystina
chose the remoulade and Courtney the tartar. We didn’t get dessert this
time around, but we’ll be going back for their rotating crumble when its
available — can’t miss it when you have the chance.
The takeaway: Mayer’s Tavern is a Cape May classic with a
reputation dating back to the 1940s when it first opened its doors.
Father-daughter team Keith and Alex Laudeman brought some life
back into the bar and restaurant back in 2016 and did quite a good job,
keeping it a favorite of locals and visitors. Mayer’s is currently open
Tuesday through Saturday from 4pm offering indoor and outdoor seating...
or just grab a barstool and get sipping!

I
woke this morning to the sound of
White-throated Sparrows singing all
around. Breeding in Boreal Forest across
much of Canada and the northeastern
US, the burley sparrow’s breeding range
just brushes northwestern New Jersey but
our state falls firmly within the bird’s winter
range. Indeed these brush-loving birds are
our dominant winter sparrow. Some adults
are dull, muted, others in breeding plumage
boldly patterned with bright white eyebrows,
a white throat and a dash of yellow near the
base of the seed-crushing bill. If you feed
birds in your yard, you support one (and
probably) more White-throated Sparrow.
They are with us November to May.
Why this column, now? Well, as our summer
breeders arrive, winter residents depart.
While I welcome these new arrivals as a sign
that Spring is advancing, I rue the loss of
those winter residents that brightened the
darkness and cold with their animation and
song. Shortly after first light, White-throated
Sparrows sing their lament to “Old Sam
Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
Peabody, Peabody, Peabody” as the whistled
song is phonetically rendered. It’s a beautiful
song, clear, unwavering and even courageous
— sung by a tiny bird to face down the trials of
the day. It’s a signal to a hostile universe that
says “I live and have survived the night. You
want a piece of this sparrow? Bring it on.”
It must take great courage to be a bird,
or great faith. Me? I have faith that these
feathered emissaries of the natural world
will always be among us. Birds survived the
climate strike that wiped out their dinosaur
king. Their feathered bodies, mobility
and ability to find and consume seeds were
the combination that defeated the climate
induced depredation that doomed the dinosaur.
Every morning, January through May,
White-throated Sparrows celebrate this great
victory with a song. Adding their voices to
those of other heirs of survivors — American
Robin, House Finch, Northern Mockingbird,
Carolina Wren, Orchard Oriole and House
Wren. While a sight-centric birder, it would
be hard to face a world in which no birds sing.
That sensory deprivation is precisely
what made the title of Rachel Carson’s
best-selling book “Silent Spring” so chilling.
A spring unsanctified by the singing of birds
is, to my mind, a horror beyond contemplation.
And I am not audio gifted. Still I relish
what I do hear and strive to learn more bird
songs every year. It is a challenge, but one
that better anchors you to the world you live
in. So, listen up.
Let’s put an end to a decades-long
debate between two sides of geekdom.
What is the stronger franchise — Star
Trek or Star Wars? Before you dismiss
this, please carefully consider. The fate
of the universe hangs in the balance.
The latest series in the Star Trek journey
ended last month with the third and final
season of Picard. The show was cosmically
entertaining. Patrick Stewart reprises his role
as Admiral Jean-Luc Picard. He’s retired now
and living on a vineyard, but seems to attract
all the intrigue a new adventure has to offer.
He meets a woman who he realizes is the
daughter of Data, the android commander
on his team over three decades earlier. Since
then, human-synthesized androids have been
banned because several conspired to destroy
a thriving civilization on Mars. The three seasons
stand alone. Each one has rich characters
(many familiar) and engaging storylines.
Let’s get back to the grudge that needs to
be settled. Trek vs Wars. Which started earlier?
The original Star Trek show first appeared
The Movie Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
on NBC in September 1966, over a decade earlier
than Star Wars. The original Star Trek lasted
three seasons. That may not seem impressive,
but consider that an expansive franchise grew
from a short-lived series. That’s a testimony
to the equity in its storytelling and characters.
Star Trek was also more dedicated to diversity
in casting than Star Wars. The show’s
inclusive cast was innovative for 1960s television.
It also created new titles and new
directions starting in the 1980s... far sooner
than the first live-action Star Wars series, The
Mandalorian, in 2019. Trek had five shows by
then: Next Generation (1987), Deep Space Nine
(1993), Voyager (1995), Enterprise (2001), and
Discovery (2017).
And Star Trek is set in our galaxy (and
others), so it’s more relatable as Earthbased
humans work alongside Vulcans and
Klingons. Star Wars is set in a galaxy far, far
away. Trek had way more interesting tech as
well — and had it first with sensors, shields,
replicators, and transporters. Beam me up,
Scotty! Sure, Star Wars has lightsabers and
Death Stars… but so “me too.”
Financially, Star Wars wins with a value at
$50 billion ($10 billion for Star Trek). But who’s
counting after the first billion? And Star Wars
may be epic, but damn sometimes in my life, I
need small bites of episodic.
Anthony C. disagrees, he hasn’t seen any
Star Trek. I’ve at least seen all the Star Wars
movies. How about you? Tell me your favorite
franchise at flixyoumissed@gmail.com.
The Activity Column
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, do a little shopping!
It’s a special occasion when the merchants
of Cape May roll their goods
out onto the sidewalk. There’s a festive
atmosphere, and it feels like a return to
fun, old-fashioned shopping.
Once upon a time, the sidewalk was
almost a part of the store. In the 19th century,
it was often the merchant who constructed
a sidewalk to provide space to take
deliveries, and to offer a place for customers
to pause, away from the busy traffic of
the street. During this pause, the customer
might taste a sample, see a demonstration
of a new product, or be passed a handbill
advertising a sale. The haberdasher or milliner
or draper would have a chance to tempt
the customer further into the store to make
a purchase. Sidewalks weren’t a new idea,
of course — the Greek city of Corinth had
them by about 4000 B.C.E. Sometime in the
Middle Ages, sidewalks seem to have disappeared,
and pedestrians and wagons shared
narrow roads, making shopping dangerous
and dirty. Eventually wide, raised sidewalks
became the mark of a sophisticated European
city, allowing pedestrians a modicum of safety
and offering some distance from the mud
and manure of the streets. American cities
caught on to the notion of municipally funded
walkways, experimenting with wood, cobblestones
and slate before concrete became
commonplace. In 1970, Cape May created a
pedestrian-friendly shopping area by turning
three blocks of Washington Street into a mall.
The Washington Street Sidewalk Sales
are a tactile experience. You stroll and browse
for the perfect combination of things you
need, like shorts for visiting grandchildren,
and things you want, like art. You can smell
the soaps at A Place on Earth and the candles
from Good Scents. Feel the fabric of the surf
shorts you’ll wear 30 times this summer to
make sure they’re not too stiff. Measure the
sparkle on a birthday bracelet or get measured
for the right bra. Try on sunglasses. Sample
the cheese and the fudge. Play with a puppet
that you’ll give to a niece or nephew, and find
a clever card at Whale’s Tale. I’ve been lucky
enough to find matching t-shirts for a family
reunion, discounted hoodies for summer, and
funky jewelry cool enough for a tween.
Shop for the moment — spring shoes, a
dress to wear to a June wedding, or a linen
sport coat. Or, next season — Halloween decor
and Christmas ornaments. The Washington
Street Mall Sidewalk Sales run Thursday May
18 through Sunday, May 21. Stores are open
from 10-5pm, with most offering discounts.
The Answer Lady invites inquiries from
gentle readers on all manner of relationship
quandaries, matters of the
heart and ethics. If you’d like to send
a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,
simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate
the wisdom herein.
Dear Answer Lady
My father is getting married in September
to a woman, whom I know does not approve
of my choice of a same-sex partner. I know
the invitations insist that plus-ones are only
permitted if married. We are not married but
what if we were? We have lived together for
four years and it’s my father’s wedding, not
some distant cousin. My father has shown only
kindness to my partner. Please do not advise
that I speak to him about it. He is completely
gobsmacked by the woman who is 15 years his
junior. To go or not to go? — Veritas
Dear Veritas
The Answer Lady assumes your partner
does not have a strong opinion either way.
We propose the question is — to irrevocably
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
fracture your relationship with your father or
not? If yes, your stepmother wins. How about
you attend the wedding but beg off attending
the reception. Make your point subtly, but let
your father know he is loved. Before the big
day, invite him to join you and your partner for
dinner at Oyster Bay and enjoy the moment.
Dear Answer Lady
Everyone in my family is angry with
me. My daughter won a spelling bee and
worked really hard — I’m so proud of her.
Well, the teacher gave ALL the contestants
a trophy. I was livid and had words with her
afterwards. She gave me that “everyone in
her class is a winner” nonsense. Then why
didn’t EVERYONE spell aficionado correctly?
According to my daughter, her father and
older sister, I embarrassed my daughter who
won. I say the whole thing diminished her
achievement and encourages kids to not work
as hard. Why strive to achieve if everyone is a
winner? One day these “winners” are going to
realize that is not the case. — Angry Mom
Dear Mom
Your point should have been expressed
discreetly to the teacher. A one-on-one
with your daughter also would have been
wiser. Now, take your daughter to Uncle
Bill’s Pancake House. Tell her how proud you
are of her and how sorry you are that your
“enthusiasm” clouded her joy — which it did.
As for the teacher, humiliating educators is a
no-no. Perhaps a gift certificate to Uncle Bill’s
with a note of apology. Next time, breathe.
some energetic energy choices!
• Use cloth towels instead of paper
• Turn water off when not in use like when cleaning your teeth
• Cut your shower time and use cooler water
• Rinse and Recycle all that you can
• When you can, ride a bike or walk
• Be respectful of our trees
• Find local farmers markets and shop there – it’s fresh and fun
• Carry litter from the beach and use containers provided
• Dry towels and clothing on a clothes line when possible
• STOP idling your car
• Turn off lights when not in use/needed
• Use LED light bulbs and unplug electronics when not in use
• Grow your flower or vegetable garden with plants that attract bees
and butterflies, and require less water
• Tread lightly – explore local nature centers and trails
• Build responsibly – Support Green Energy!
ACT PERSONALLY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR THE
Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
FISHER was brought to the shelter as a stray
and was very scared and confused at first. He
is treat motivated, making his training progress
much easier. Fisher enjoys walks and has
excellent leash skills. He is a sensitive boy who
would do well in a family with older children.
Fisher has the potential to be a wonderful
companion.
GATSBY is a purebred, two-year-old Rottweiler
whose owners were unable to care for
him. He knows many useful behavior cues and
loves to play in the yard. Gatsby is still young,
so he needs to work on his youthful, impulsive
behavior. He would do best if adopted into a
home with no other pets, knowledge of his
breed that would continue his trianing.
CAPTAIN is an adult miniature Saint Bernard
whose owner could no longer care for him. He
is adjusting to the noisy shelter, but prefers a
quiet home. Captain is very low energy and
loves to snuggle and go for walks — he has
excellent leash skills. He needs a slow introduction
to other dogs, cats and children, but
would fit very well in a loving family home.
Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
BLIZZARD is about six-to-seven years old
and came to the shelter as a “feral cat,” but has
turned out to be nothing but a sweetheart. He
loves the women in the shelter, but is intimidated
by men and new faces. He’ll need some
time to adjust, but Blizzard would do well in a
quiet home without children. If interested in
this boy, contact the shelter.
YODA came to the shelter with her housemates,
Kitty and Cutlet. She is a beautiful Siamese
mix who is very chatty and will never let
you forget she’s in the room. Yoda prefers to be
handled on her own terms but loves affection
when she’s ready for it. She is up to date on all
her vaccinations and spayed. If you’d like to
meet this sweet girl, contact the shelter.
LIZA came to the shelter when her owners
moved out and left her behind. She lived
outside and was fed by construction workers
next door. They contacted animal control once
their job was finished, which led her to the
shelter. She’s in great shape despite her past
and just needs to put a little weight on before
joining a new loving family.
