CORONATION SPECIAL

This year our RE Original Prints exhibition opens on the 5th of May, on the 6th May

the United Kingdom celebrates the Coronation of King Charles the 3rd.

As a Royal Society we are proud to have this esteemed national connection going

back to 1888, when we first received our Royal Charter from Queen Victoria.

Today, and very much wide awake, the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (the

RE) continues it’s quest to represent the very best in contemporary printmaking

not just nationally but from across the world.

Rather like the extraordinary inventions created in the later part of the 19th

Century, the early part of the 21st Century also represents great inventive and

technological breakthroughs. Factors that shape society, art, artists and Royal

Households alike. Great inventors, artists, and leaders take risks.

The RE and the art of printmaking likewise have to survive on risk. It is the virtue

of the known, balanced with the excitement of the unknown, creating the unexpected.

Certain conventions of printmaking only remain reassuring, then we miss the

opportunities brought about by risk; and likewise the same could be said of the

UK’s Royal presence.

A new exhibition, a new King and a new opportunity to move forward.
