The Institute for Education (IfE) is located in the limits of Pembroke, overlooking the 

sea and the Madliena Tower. The entire building enjoys notable nature views and is at a 

considerable distance from any other buildings, creating a calm and quiet environment 

for your learning experience. There is parking around the building as well as further up, 

and there is a bus stop (Luther) located exactly outside the main doors. 

The IfE premises offer numerous facilities to its course participants, including: 

Classrooms with different setups and equipment for whatever a session 

might require 

Wheelchair access to the building 

Various restrooms throughout the building 

A cafeteria with food and beverage vending machines 

A breakroom with sofas and chairs 

A multi-faith room 

A counselling room 

Ample outside seating and space 

The entire premises are also strictly non-smoking.

The premises make it possible for our lecturers to 

be creative in how they deliver their sessions, such 

as the case of applying outdoor learning. Certain 

sessions are, however, also delivered in other 

venues and schools which we are in partnership 

with. These include St Clare College Secondary 

School (Pembroke), St Ignatius College Secondary 

School (Qormi), St Nicholas College Middle 

School (Rabat), St Theresa College Middle School 

(Birkirkara), St Benedict College Secondary School 

(Kirkop), San Gorg Preca College Secondary School 

(Hamrun), the Marsa Sports Complex (Marsa), 

National Sport School (Pembroke), Digital Literacy 

Centre (Hamrun), the Malta Council for Science and 

Technology, and the Institute for Tourism Studies. 

Considering their size and location, the IfE premises 

are an ideal space for events and are, in fact, the 

venue for a number of activities which the IfE 

organises throughout the year.

THE CEO 

Since 2018, the Institute for Education offers the right opportunity 

for those who want to pursue a career in education. One can 

seek to become a teacher by choosing a suitable qualification 

pathway through either a Bachelor of Education degree or a 

Postgraduate Diploma. Qualified teachers can opt to progress in 

their career by pursing a Master Degree in Applied Educational 

Leadership. Furthermore, the professional educator that selfreflects 

will value the different stand-alone courses offered that 

can bridge the gaps one may have. Each year the IfE offers 

more streams as part of the initial teacher training qualifications 

and more Awards for continuous professional development in 

various areas. The IfE is committed to deliver courses that are 

relevant, practical and accessible. Furthermore, the assessment 

of all courses is continuous, without the use of examinations, so 

that evidence of learning is collected for all learning outcomes 

and not just for a limited sample. 

As from this year, the Institute for Education will be offering a 

Master of Education in Teaching Students with Disabilities. This 

innovative qualification offers a new teaching career pathway 

to Learning Support Educators who hold a Bachelor Degree in 

Inclusive Education. These prospective teachers will be able 

to teach in Resource Centres and settings where learners have 

particular needs and would benefit from such expertise. 

Choosing to enrol on a course with the Institute for Education is 

a decision to study for a high standard qualification or award that 

is delivered part-time using a blended learning modality. The 

quality and expectations remain as high as for any qualification 

that is delivered full-time. Resiliency and a growth mindset 

are therefore a prerequisite, since studying while having other 

commitments can offer a challenge which can be overcome if 

there is a clear vision and passion.

on a child’s future self, their knowledge, their attitude, their 

wellbeing and ultimately their happiness. 

Your self-belief will be enhanced as you will have the opportunity 

to recognise your achievements and understand what gaps 

you might have in your learning. You will be empowered to 

take the necessary steps to bridge that gap, leading to your 

development as a professional. 

Support will be provided throughout your learning path. The 

lecturers, course coordinators, supervisors and the student 

affairs manager will be there to assist you every time you reach 

out. You will be given various opportunities to provide your 

feedback. Our intention is to enhance our processes, procedures 

and, above all, our courses in order to remain relevant and 

forward-looking. 

This will not only be a journey of the mind but of your whole 

self if you allow it to be so. At the Institute for Education you 

can be critical, present your ideas and be innovative. Schools 

and society in general need educators who can face challenges

The IfE was originally set up in April 2015 by 

virtue of Legal Notice 140 of 2015, as amended 

by Legal Notice 240 of 2015. The IfE was 

reconstituted as an agency by virtue of Legal 

Notice 243 of 2017. 

The IfE provides initial teacher training 

and professional development that foster 

21 st century skills as well as competences 

in educators at all levels, whilst also 

infusing equity and social justice within 

all programmes. It offers accredited/nonaccredited 

programmes which are flexible and 

can be delivered through various modes such 

as face-to-face, online and blended learning.

number of non-accredited programmes which

Higher Education Authority (MFHEA) as a 

Further and Higher Education Institution in 

accordance with the second schedule of the 

Subsidiary Legislation 327.433. 

The IfE is vested with the capacity to provide 

qualifications and continuous professional 

education to all educators who recognise the 

need to keep improving their competencies 

in order to remain relevant in this perpetually 

evolving globalised and digital world. It 

also boasts of having developed the whole 

pathway through its qualifications offered to 

create the professional teacher. In so doing, 

it has elevated the teaching status, since 

supply teachers at any level can now find the 

pathway that suits them according to their 

present qualifications, apply for the right

The IfE welcomes all individuals who are 

interested in contributing towards the 

development of education by encouraging 

educators to explore fresh approaches 

towards their professional growth. Such 

educators drive positive change and explore 

methodologies aimed at increasing impact 

on the students’ learning experience. 

Course participants at the IfE also have the 

opportunity to reflect on learning, set goals, 

provide evidence of learning, give and receive 

feedback, co-teach, analyse performances, 

and improve practice through selfassessment. 

At the IfE, course participants 

will experience a personalised approach, 

as the IfE firmly believes that by imparting 

a stimulating experience that enriches the 

educator, the educators will, in turn, transfer 

this approach to their students at school. 

IfE offers accredited programmes at MQF 

Levels 4–7, which are targeted at individuals 

who are interested in pursuing a career 

in education. These programmes offer a 

different learning experience to course 

participants as they are delivered through 

a mixture of face-to-face sessions, online 

and blended teaching approaches. The IfE 

fosters an environment which is conducive to 

learning through its supportive policies and 

procedures. The programmes offered by the 

IfE are designed to add value to individuals 

who are passionate about children’s learning 

and the education sector. 

The IfE is equipped with all the required 

learning facilities and resources. The IfE 

boasts of a portal which provides tools and 

resources to course participants. Within its 

interface, the portal has an integrated video 

conferencing tool – Blackboard Collaborate 

– and a comprehensive virtual library 

through which a vast range of journals, 

eBooks and other academic documentation 

can be accessed. The IfE is also equipped 

with a physical library, wireless internet 

access, interactive whiteboards and video 

conferencing equipment which are available 

in each lecture room. The IfE’s facilities are 

constructed and maintained in accordance 

with legal requirements to ensure access, 

safety, security, and a healthy environment 

with consideration for environmental and 

ecological concerns. 

Prospective students are to note that the 

Teaching Profession is regulated; therefore, 

access to the profession is granted by a 

warrant which is issued by the Council for the 

Teaching Profession.

The Student Affairs Office within the Admissions Department 

is the primary focal point between the course participants 

and the Institute for Education. This office strives to enhance 

the whole-person development. Through an outreach 

approach, we want to create a sense of community that 

supports our course participants in their professional 

and personal growth by acting as the go-to 

reference point for academic and emotional 

support. Our guiding principle is to place 

the course participant at the core of our 

operations by fostering an accessible, 

inclusive environment that supports 

work-life-study commitments.

development. The Committee supports the 

Admissions Department in organising events 

and activities with the aim of creating an 

interesting and fun campus experience.

CAREER PROSPECTS 


Career prospects, upskilling, professional 

development, and progression are key 

considerations when deciding to follow an award 

or a qualification programme. Starting from our 

accredited awards, these provide educators 

with the opportunity to enhance their skills and 

competences to deliver a more comprehensive 

learning experience to students. Some of the 

awards may also be a prerequisite to apply for 

certain positions of employment and may contribute 

towards the accelerated progression scheme. 

Our Bachelor of Education (Hons) and Master of 

Education degrees are both initial teacher training 

programmes that provide an excellent opportunity 

for supply teachers and those aspiring to join the 

teaching profession to acquire the necessary 

pedagogical knowledge in primary, secondary or 

vocational areas. The Bachelor of Education (Hons) 

programmes are ideal for anyone who is interested 

in teaching a subject/area but is not in possession 

of a first degree. Whilst the Master of Education 

programmes target those that already have 

obtained a first degree in the subject/area and now 

would like to extend this experience into teaching. 

One will also have the possibility to exit the Master 

of Education programme with a Postgraduate 

Diploma in Education. Under the current Education 

Act, upon successfully obtaining the Bachelor of 

Education (MQF Level 6) or a Postgraduate Diploma 

in Education (MQF Level 7), one will have the 

necessary pedagogical qualification to apply for 

a regular teaching position. Moreover, the newly 

launched Master of Education in Teaching Students 

with Disabilities offers the chance to specialise in 

teaching students with disabilities. 

One may consider taking their career a step further 

and invest in our signature Master in Applied 

Educational Leadership, which is the perfect 

platform for anyone wishing to explore a career in 

educational leadership, particularly within school 

management. 

Based on the Digital Competence Framework for 

Educators (DigCompEdu), the IfE is offering the 

Postgraduate Certificate in Digital Competences 

for Education (MQF Level 7). This qualification 

programme is the perfect path for those working 

within the education profession who wish to 

upgrade their digital skills and competencies in 

the area of digital literacies, specifically digital

technologies that can be used to enhance 

and innovate education and training. 

Our first programme in Early Years is a jointdegree 

programme that enables Early 

Years educators who already hold a higher 

national diploma in the area to top up their 

qualification and acquire a bachelor’s degree. 

This Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Early Years, 

Learning and Care, offered jointly with 

MCAST, is the perfect stepping stone for Early 

Years educators to grow and progress in their 

professional career. 

The Student Affairs Office welcomes any 

queries and invites all interested and 

prospective applicants to get in touch to 

discuss their prospects and opportunities. 

Whilst most of the programmes that we 

offer will open a window of opportunities 

to become a qualified regular educator, we 

also recommend that you take a look at the 

employment requirements published by 

your prospective employers, as well as the 

requirements published by the Council for 

the Teaching Profession with regards to 

the awarding of teaching warrants.

WORK INTEGRATED LEARNING 


The IfE’s aspiration is that Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) is embedded as a formal 

component into its undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Therefore, degree 

programmes addressed towards educators’ development and initial teacher training 

have embedded within them a WIL component; this is reflected primarily through the 

teaching practice and the micro-placement Modules. The WIL Department offers course 

participants the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge gained from their 

academic settings to a work-based scenario. 

Teaching Practice and Practicum 

Teaching Practice is a vital component of initial teacher-training programmes as it 

provides an opportunity for the learners to put theory into practice and to self-reflect on 

teaching and assessment methods employed in the classroom. Furthermore, this module 

is an integral part of the programme, which will also contribute towards partially fulfilling 

the requirements outlined by the Council for the Teaching Profession with respect to 

applications for a teacher’s warrant. 

The IfE offers Teaching Practice placements within the following degree programmes:

The micro-placement experience 

has enriched my insight into the 

teacher’s role as I could look at it from 

another perspective. There is a lot of work 

and preparation that has to be done in order 

for the students to have a quality education and 

for the centres to run smoothly. This experience 

has helped me broaden my knowledge and face new 

challenges, thus developing problem-solving skills. 

Having other experiences gives you the chance to explore 

your skills and sharpen them to master your current job.

Assessment of the Teaching Practice/Practicum 

This component is assessed by practice visitors who conduct classroom observations and 

support the course participants’ development through feedback and recommendations 

on practice. Course participants will also be assessed on a Teaching Practice file/ 

Practicum documentation, which needs to be kept up-to-date throughout the placement 

period.

Micro-Placements in Industry 

The IfE is offering micro-placements within the industry. The uniqueness of this concept is 

that the micro-placement modules are integrated within qualifications that are targeted 

towards initial teachers’ training and specialisation in education. We seek to build 

a stronger bridge between the education sector and the world of work through this 

initiative. 

The micro-placement modules are found in two qualifications offered by the Institute: 

Within the Bachelor of Education (Hons), the micro-Placement module carries 

six (6) ECTS, with 90 hours of hands-on training 

Within the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Conversion), the module 

carries ten (10) ECTS, having 180 hours of hands-on training 

This module is also offered as an award at MQF Level 7 (10 ECTS), targeting educators 

already working in the field who are primarily seeking to further their continuous 

professional development by making their teaching practices more relevant in an evergrowing 

knowledge-based economy, through a work experience of 180 hours in an 

industry of their choice.

Through these modules, our course participants will gain additional skills through 

collaboration, networking, and critical thinking. This experience will provide an 

opportunity for our course participants to be engaged within the community in which 

they are learning, and therefore, they will eventually be able to incorporate practical 

examples within the classroom. 

These modules will allow course participants to experience the transition from a classroombased 

scenario to working within an industry of their choice, an experience which they 

will refer to when preparing their students holistically for the future. 

With the micro-placement modules and contributors on board, we shall equip our course 

participants with soft skills such as adaptability, communication, work ethic, teamwork, 

flexibility, time management, and problem-solving skills. Therefore, we will be creating a 

spillover effect in transmitting 21 st century skills into the classrooms. 

When delivering these modules, the IfE encourages course participants to seek their 

placements to ensure that the experience meets their expectations and makes the 

learning processes more valuable. 

In supporting the micro-placement modules, the IfE has sought contributors who have 

committed to hosting our course participants on placements within their workplace. Our

REQUIREMENTS: 

QUALIFICATION LEADING TO B.ED. & M.ED. PRIMARY 

Course participants following B.Ed. (Hons) Primary 

or M.Ed. Primary are expected to deliver the full 

timetable of a regular class teacher of a Primary 

school. No subject teaching is permitted during 

the teaching practice period. The subjects to be 

covered are: Mathematics, English, Maltese, Social 

Studies, Religion, Science, Physical Education and 

Art/Arts & Crafts. 

During teaching practice course participants are 

expected to deliver lessons for Arts/Arts & Crafts, 

Science, and Physical Education (P.E.), subject to 

school regulations. 

If a peripatetic subject teacher is going to deliver 

one of these peripatetic subjects: Arts/Arts & 

Crafts, Music, Dance, Drama, Science, Ethics, P.E., 

or ICT, the course participant on placement must 

ensure that they participate in class and support 

the teacher during these lessons, subject to 

school regulations.

Secondary/Vocational Education course 

participants are expected to be teaching the 

subject that they are studying as part of the

Ethics, PSCD are to note that during the 

whole course/programme they will have one 

teaching practice in a Primary School and 

one teaching practice in a Secondary School 

setting.

MATURITY CLAUSE 


Are you over the age of 23 and interested in applying for our Bachelor 

programme? Then the maturity clause might interest you. 

What requirements do I need to satisfy to be considered as a mature participant? 

This clause permits an applicant who satisfies the following conditions to apply 

for consideration to participate in a course as a mature student. Apart from any 

additional eligibility requirements, the candidate must, at a minimum: 

i. be in possession of the School Leaving Certificate or Secondary School 

Certificate and Profile (SSC&P) 

ii. have on the date of application 

a) attained the age of 23 for entry to courses at MQF Level 5 or higher 

b) attained the age of 21 for entry to courses at MQF Level 4. 

Applicants interested in the Bachelor Programmes applying under the maturity 

clause must also be in possession of an MQF Level 3 (minimum Grade 5 or C) in 

Maltese, English Language and Mathematics awarded by MATSEC or an equivalent 

examination body recognised by the Institute for Education. 

Applicants who apply under the maturity clause have to demonstrate academic 

potential and that they have gained academically relevant knowledge and workplace 

experience. This will be assessed through an interview in which applicants need 

to present a portfolio with a list of requested documents. Following the interview, 

applicants may also be required to undertake additional studies as a condition for 

their acceptance.

Do you think you have covered similar content to that included in our programmes? 

Do you have experience through which you accumulated relevant knowledge 

applicable to the programme? Then this might be applicable to you. 

What is RPL? 

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is a 

formalised process through which credit may 

be awarded for learning undertaken prior to the 

commencement of a course offered by the IfE 

or learning completed together with, but not 

as part of the IfE course for which a prospective 

course participant has applied or is registered. 

What are the pros of RPL? 

RPL avoids duplication of previous learning, 

whilst ensuring that credit is only awarded 

when strong evidence is presented of successful 

achievement of the learning outcomes applicable 

to the level and content of the award for which 

the learner has applied or is registered. 

When do you need to claim RPL? 

An RPL application for exemption can be made 

once a potential course participant has been 

accepted onto the programme. RPL claims 

should be made at least one month prior to 

the start of the course. This clause does not 

apply to RPL (formal) claims related to standalone 

modules completed with the Institute for 

Education.

When is RPL considered? 

Usually, only qualifications and experience 

acquired within ten years of the date of an RPL 

claim will be admissible as evidence to support 

a claim. Certain courses may apply a different 

time period to reflect professional and other

The IfE welcomes applications from worldwide learners. For the purpose of admissions, applicants 

from EU and EEA countries are considered the same as nationals. Learners from countries outside 

Home/EU/EEA are classified as international applicants. International course participants who 

intend to move to Malta for study reasons, require an authorisation from Identity Malta for the 

duration of the programme in order to be able to study locally. 

Language Requirements 

For Bachelor’s programmes, apart from the 

set entry requirements for each course,

Primary Education 

Programme Description 

This programme provides course 

participants with a strong foundation 

in primary education pedagogy, 

assessment, inclusive practices and 

educational theory. It aims to provide 

those within or wishing to join the 

education sector with the necessary 

tools and competences to teach 

effectively in the primary sector whilst 

fostering a supportive and inclusive 

learning environment for all learners. 

Within this programme, learners shall 

also explore exciting areas of primary 

pedagogy and action-based research 

including project-based learning, 

learning stories, outdoor learning

Physical education was the subject that helped 

me connect the proverbial dots when I was a student. 

I decided to take a long-overdue decision to quit my 

finance career and start teaching P.E. as a supply teacher. 

Thanks to IfE, this Bachelor of Education programme has given 

me the opportunity to eventually become a regular teacher. I am 

now in my third year of studies and feel that this experience has 

given me the tools, skills, and knowledge to become a better 

teacher and offer my students a more “quality” P.E. experience. 

IfE’s blended learning modules allow me to study in my free 

time. whilst learning in small groups helps me feel valued as an

When I learnt that the Master in 

Applied Educational Leadership course 

offered by IfE is mainly asynchronous, I decided 

I could manage to balance out my time between work, 

family and the course. 

The MAEL course provides an applied approach to leadership, 

with most lecturers still practicing what they are discussing 

with us. They are aware of the realities in today’s schools, and 

understand the difficulties encountered. The course can be 

challenging at times, but the help and assistance provided by

Through this programme, participants will be given 

the opportunity to develop their understanding of 

ways in which cognitive neuroscience can inform

In the 

last few 

years, I followed 

various educator 

sessions with the IfE. The 

flexibility and convenience 

brought by online learning enabled 

me, a full-time employee, to enrol in these 

courses. I chose the IfE because I wanted to 

gain more awareness and knowledge on several 

educational aspects and also gain useful, practical skills 

that I would be able to use in class. The sessions were all very 

interesting, practical, and interactive, including a lot of groupwork 

and discussions, which enabled engagement throughout. The lecturers 

were very professional, provided great insights on the discussed topics, and 

gave us useful tips that we can use in class. I believe that keeping abreast of 

the current literature is important in our work, and these educator sessions 

with the IfE helped me to stay up to date on numerous educational aspects.

With your best interest in mind, the IfE team has a stimulating calendar of 

events prepared to enhance your overall IfE experience. While we understand 

that juggling work, family, and studies can sometimes be stressful and 

overwhelming, there should always be time to unwind. 

Throughout your journey at the IfE you will 

have the opportunity to enjoy our teambuilding 

activities, and participate in the 

IfE Symposium and Education Research 

Week. You will also have the opportunity 

to attend our il-Klikka tal-Klassi events (a 

biannual social event whereby we will discuss 

some engaging topics together with a panel of 

expert guest speakers), and take part in events 

such as the World Philosophy Day (an 

opportunity for an open-floor discussion), and 

the Philosophy Movie Night (a fun social 

event where intelligent conversation is sparked 

through film over a glass of wine). Course 

participants will also have the chance to join the 

IfE Book club – regular meetups during which 

participants will discuss a major educational text 

and the relevance it has to educators today. 

The IfE believes that it is important that our 

country’s educators are not only educating our 

children in their fields, but are also exposed 

to unconventional topics that may indirectly 

affect the development of their students. It is for 

this reason that we have worked on creating a 

diverse calendar of events which incorporates 

both academic and social activities that seek to 

enhance your learning journey with the IfE.
