LESS IS MORE
As one of the fashion meccas in Asia. Korea is now leading the Asian hot perm
trend with more natural, soft, healthy wave and curls.
Together with《ESTETICA 艾 丝 》from Italy and the renowned JUNO HAIR
ACADEMY from South Korea, Schwarzkopf Professional is presenting you the
upcoming Korean perm trends in 2023 — K-BOND WAVE COLLECTION II.

LESS IS MORE,
minimalism but
not simple.
It’s the keynote of
all true elegance.
Our Concept
SEOUL is known as one of the leading cities that set the
beauty and fashion trends in Asia. This collection will
present to you Korea’s latest perm hair styles combined
with trendy fashion, embracing premium simplicity.
and Cheongdam
represent the trendy
fashion landmarks
in Korea.
Dean Lim Mi-young,
JUNO Academy Creative Director
Q. WHAT ARE THE
CHARACTERISTICS
OF THESE TRENDY
LANDMARKS? WHAT
IS THE LATEST
STREET PERM
TREND?
These trendy landmarks are
photogenic spots for social media,
and where beauty trends are born.
You would find many fashion
icons in trendy outfits there.
The latest street trend in Korea
features carefree and casual hair
styles. Besides, smooth and
straight hair like the girls from
New Jeans (KPOP group), is also
becoming popular.

Q. PLEASE SHARE
YOUR INSPIRATION
AND CONCEPT FOR
THIS NEW TREND
COLLECTION.
I usually get inspired from fashion
and clothing trends, and then I
would create new hairstyles
according to the unique
characteristics and popular looks
from different time periods.
For example, if the 90s or 2000s
fashion looks are trending right
now, I would take reference from
that and rework into more
fashionable styles. That’s why I
also learn a lot about fashion and
clothing. Recently, the fashion
trend in Korea has been going
back to the 2000s, so I took more
inspiration from the 2000s fashion
styles for this collection.
Q. PLEASE SHARE
HOW YOU
FEEL ABOUT
SCHWARZKOPF
PROFESSIONAL
BONDASTIC.
There is a significant
demand for perming
services in Korea, as most
people consider it
necessary to have the hair
permed. I have used many
perm products myself, but
after using SKP Bondastic,
I’m surprised to discover
that it’s actually possible for
a perm product to
minimize hair damage
while providing shine after
the process.
In the past, I always thought that if you wanted the hair to shine, the curls
must be big. However, Bondastic delivers hair shine and bouncy curls at
the same time. I feel that it’s a perfect perm product, so I’m frequently
using it.
Male Attitude
Male grooming is an ever-evolving craft with its own unique
dynamism. It’s also a huge global business, especially since men
have become so much more experimental about the way they look.
And men’s hair is trending hard, wherever you’re from! Gary Kelly
RELAXED STRUCTURE
“With male grooming now bigger than ever, we wanted to create an image which reflected the trends of the present, which also show the
progression of the market and the styles that are both popular and relatable to clients of all ages. The first image is inspired by individuality,
the chance to embrace the flexibility of the hair, working with a much more relaxed feel and allowing the individual to embrace their own
creativity and freedom. Movement was the inspiration for this look. The second look is inspired by the strength of a classic square shape – a
much more structured and uniform look, using an architectural like shape to structure the hair and keep it in check at all times.”
Andy Heasman, International Creative Director, RUSH Hair (UK)
GENDER FLUIDITY
“This image challenges the boundaries around men’s hair and colour. I love that this look demonstrates a style and colour placement
that is totally wearable for men. I also enjoy the androgynous feel to this image. It taps into the movement around owning our identity,
self expression and gender fluidity. I think the moody green hue here is perfect, not only to suit the model’s fair skin tone, but to create
mystery around the face while also adding interest to the stylised haircut.” Teri Lowe, Creative Director at The Hair Surgery (UK)
SOFT TEXTURE
“Current trends are inspired by classics such as crops and mullets which are still going strong in
2022. Crew cuts are also popular as some men prefer more practical cuts to wash more frequently.
Personally, I love all the possibilities and it has been nice putting some work into changing styles and
working with a lot of hair.” Sindi Devitte, Andis Global Educator (USA)
TIGHT FADE
“The polished elegance of a tight fade will never be off trend. For a fashion forward feel, create a tight
fade at an angle just above the ear, add a hard part and keep the edges clean. Refine further by grooming
eyebrows and any facial hair to complement the face shape and celebrate the wearers personal style.”
BIG BANGS
“Throwback to grunge. For a woman this side-parted chin-length bob would be somewhat of a classic.
But this androgynous look with the right attitude can work great for younger men as well.”
Mike Taylor (USA)
OLD SCHOOL QUIFF
“Shifting textures and layers, a high and tight undercut, and styling product that enhance the natural
texture of hair come together to create this urban version of an old-school quiff. Today men’s looks
need to be versatile, easy to style into different looks and a means to express their personal vibe.
Depending on the styling products used, this look can easily transform from vintage to modern.”
RED MULLET
“A fire engine red makes the perfect fashion statement for what is already a disconnected and textured mulllet.
Denman tools are great for getting those crisp lines over the ears and shaping the side-swept bangs close to the head.”
ENHANCED DISRUPTION
“I wanted this haircut to almost have a do-it-yourself feel like it had been cut with a ‘knife and fork’ to enhance and disrupt
the texture of the haircut. The inspiration was taken from the punk era to create this anti-establishment, raw neo-punk feel - a
look that could be rejected by the mainstream. I love this image as it injects a sense of reality with unedited purity to create
this strong statement.” Christian Wiles (UK)
Hair: Matrix Artist Ambassador Christian Wiles from Wiles Studios, Northampton
ULTRA BLONDE
“To create this image I worked with Jerome Russell. I always keep my looks extremely wearable but also contemporary and
stylish. Not only is this look super on trend, but it also stays true to my signature style – precision cutting and creating
clean, precise hair looks. I used Jerome Russell bblonde bleach to bleach up the hair to this clean, white blonde. For cutting
I did clipper over comb to create a wait line and then point cut the top to create texture throughout the bleached hair.
For styling I used Label M Matte Paste and Volume Foam to create edgy texture and volume in the hair with a matt finish.”
Jim Shaw, Director of TONI&GUY Billericay (UK)
Hair: Jim Shaw for Jerome Russell.
“Jing debuts an eye-catching and bright orange colour, which complements his effortless hairstyle. His flexible look
is perfect for someone who prefers a low maintenance yet put-together appearance. Using Goldwell LightDimensions
and Goldwell Topchic to achieve a glowing orange, Alex also maintains Jing’s length with disconnected layers and hair
texturising - a hairdo that only the likes of K-pop idols would be able to pull off! To maintain this look, Alex recommends
using styling products from the Goldwell StyleSign range such as Creative Texture RoughMan and Texturizer Texturising
Mineral Spray.” Alex Neo (Singapore)
FASHION BLENDING
“A balance between smoothness and angularity with beautiful blending texture creates a flawless
modern look. With subtle blue and purple tones embracing hair, there is a strong emphasis on
character, especially when seen in sunlight. Finally, leaving a heavy-weight feature line on the top
section generates a ‘Yuppie’ look and transfers it into a sophisticated fashion style.”
Eros Eason Chen (Taiwan)
Hair: Eros Eason Chen, Taiwan Model: Samuel
JAGGER HOMAGE
“I set out to create a look that would reflect my model’s personality - Milo is in the music industry /model,
rock ’n’ roll edge that I wanted to magnify. His hair was originally just past his shoulders and all one length
- I wanted to create something more lived-in and touchable, an homage to Mick Jagger without being a
direct copy. I cut the hair with a razor, shaping an oval perimeter and shattering the hair to create layers
and texture that are so versatile to style. The finished look has 1970s influences but with a contemporary
twist that makes it surprisingly wearable.” Darren Ambrose (UK)
After 2 years of virtual events,
Alternative Hair went LIVE! again with
its 2022 show ‘Legends’, just in time to
celebrate its 40 year milestone!
The Alternative Hair Show presented ‘Legends’ at an exciting Art Deco gem of a venue - the
Troxy Theatre in London’s Limehouse. The prevailing feeling among everyone present was
how wonderful it was to be meeting again in person, thanks to the fantastic support from
sponsors and, of course, the creative hairdressing teams that appeared on stage. As always,
the Alternative Hair Show was all about giving and sharing; inspiring and entertaining and,
most importantly, raising funding for a variety of Leukaemia and Blood Cancer charities.
This year’s Alternative Hair Show raised a staggering £103,000. The original Alternative Hair
Show - back in 1983 - was created to raise money for Leukaemia Research in memory of
Valentino Rizzo, Tony and Maggie Rizzo’s young son, who had sadly lost his life to blood
cancer. That core aim and belief remains the same, but as the years have passed, this enduring
event focuses on showcasing the artistry of hairdressing teams from every corner of the
globe, as well as finding and promoting new talent. That's because Alternative Hair is not
just about raising money, it’s also about raising the status of the hairdresser. The hairdressers
showing their work on stage are absolute craftsmen, artists and visionaries. Beyond that,
they are dedicated, and embrace the freedom of creativity afforded them by Alternative Hair.
This year’s show entitled ‘Legends’, was made up of 14 teams. New for this year was the New
Visionaries Show, a presentation of the creative work of 18 hairdressers who had previously
won the Alternative Hair Visionary Awards. The final 3 places of the International Visionary
Awards were also announced during the show, with Founder, Tony Rizzo and Alternative
Hair Worldwide President, Anthony Mascolo, announcing the winners: Avant Garde:
Lorenzo Marchelle; Cut & Colour: Laurentiu Bostan; Men’s: Wei Wei Chuang.
THE NEW VISIONARIES: Chrystopher Benson, HC Salon, Experimento No Name,
Salon International 2022:
innovative style
Salon International
retuned to ExCeL London
again this Autumn, where
it welcomed thousands
of visitors and hundreds
of brands from across
the hairdressing industry.
The three-day event really did provide something for everyone - from
retail therapy with the hundreds of brands on offer, to show-stopping
stage performances from the biggest names in hairdressing. There
were also opportunities for education, business and networking along
with live hairdressing shows and the opportunity to view HJ’s British
Hairdressing Awards Gallery, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional.
As well as the many new product launches that were taking place,
there were numerous special offers and hands-on demonstrations
to enjoy across the exhibition stands, which included colour houses,
software systems, education providers, equipment manufacturers,
distributors and many more. “Salon International was a wonderfully,
action-packed weekend”, says HJ’s executive director, Jayne Lewis-
Orr. “Full of inspiration, education and excitement we are so proud
of everyone involved and who helped to make Salon International
the incredible show it is.”
SALON LIVE
The exclusive education hub of Salon International, the Salon Live shows
provided the opportunity to experience in-depth training sessions
with Mahogany, Patrick Cameron, Sassoon Academy and TONI&GUY.
The shows provided hairdressers the opportunity to indulge in
the latest techniques across cut, colour and styling, leaving guests
empowered with new ideas for both creative and commercial work.
BUSINESS LIVE
The Business Live sessions were particularly relevant this year, given
the many economic challenges that our industry is experiencing
due to the significantly higher day-to-day costs of running a salon.
Visitors were primed to gain all of the advice and support they need,
thanks to the Business Live Stage, sponsored by the NHBF. Packed
full of relevant, practical ideas and advice, the expert panels covered
topics including apprenticeships, mental health, inclusivity, as well
as insight on launching a brand, recruitment and managing and
maintaining a motivated team.
◗ Salon International will return to the ExCeL
London on the 14th – 16th October 2023.
World Business Congress 2022
Held at PACIFICO Yokohama in Japan from 21 - 22
November 2022, the Takara World Business Congress
2022 (TWBC2022) was an interactive event with a deeper
look into the theme of “What Is Beautiful?”.
Welcoming almost 15,000 visitors over 2 days, TWBC2022 has been hailed a huge success by both its
organisers and the delighted visitors who arrived from all over the world. The event was originally
scheduled to take pace in 2021 to celebrate Takara Belmont’s 100th anniversary, but had to be postponed
until now due to lingering concerns post-pandemic. The event was officially opened by Mr. Yoshikawa,
Chairman and CEO of the company. “We are staging an event that will expand the future of salons, as well
as offer new possibilities for people working in the hairdressing and beauty industry”, he explained.
THE HAIR SHOW: HOT, EXCITING CREATIVITY
A live show is always a great event and a major attraction of TWBC was the 15 teams who perform
on-stage at five shows. The venue was filled with enthusiasm and excitement throughout the day. At
the entrance, an hour before the show started, there was already a long queue of people who couldn't
wait to get in and then. When the doors opened, a huge DJ booth awaited everyone, helping to lift
their spirits and fuel their excitement. On stage, the audience was enthralled by the creations of the
popular salons, with outstanding lighting, sound and visual effects. The audience left the venue with a
look of unquenchable excitement and with a deep impression on their hearts.
BUSINESS & TECHNICAL INNOVATION
The exhibition zone focused on the future of the salon business with an emphasis on technology and
sustainability. Booth highlights included:
The THROUGH THE MIRROR booth, which offered a tour to experience a salon with the mirror
and more than 1,200 visitors taking over the two days. A next-generation device, the mirror’s AI
function of the mirror resolves communication issues between customers and salon professionals.
At the NEO SPA booth, visitors experienced a Head Spa + Head Bath, which can help to reset the mind
and body. 15-minute menu was offered while being surrounded by background music, fragrance and
image films under the 3 themes of ‘Refresh’, ‘Recharge’ and ‘Relax’. NEO SPA was working in conjunction
with three of Takara Belmont’s original head spa brands: LebeL, pittoretiqua and ESTESSiMO.
ELEGANT CREATIONS FROM EUROPE’S ELITE
The OMC Global Symposium, held on the second day of the TWBC, showcased authentic hairdressing
from an elite European artistic team, which elegantly enthralled the audience. The day also included a
display of men’s grooming and barbering, plus the technical work of eight Ladies & Gents hair experts
- those who won gold medals in their respective categories at the 2022 World Championships in France.
The bold, yet refined techniques from some of the world’s best creative minds were generously
applauded by the audience.
AboutTexture
introduces four, unique curly looks which convey the
confidence style of modern Asian women.
premium solution for shiny, long-lasting
waves or permanently straightened hair.
The assortment offers all you need
in order to create beautiful modern
looks while also providing excellent
conditioning benefits.
42 inspiration
Recognising her inborn sensitivity and talents for
hairstyling since early childhood, Mila entered the
hairdressing industry at a very young age. She joined in%
Hair Salon as a team member in 2014, and received the
International Goldwell Master Colourist Certification in
2017. Mila has gone on to become an iconic figure for new
generation hairstylists, demonstrating her extraordinary
sensitivity towards hairstyles and fashion trends. Mila is
well-known for her great attention to details and amazing
perming techniques. She can always pin down the most
suitable wave and texture for each particular hairstyle,
so that commercial hairstyles can also channel the essence
of Haute Couture.
M
ila Liang has designed
two chic textures –
“Oxygen Curl” and
“Teddy Curl”, which are
presented in various
different looks with the
use of selective hair
colours and styling products. From
feminine looks that give a romantic
and elegant touch, to natural yet
charismatic alternatives for daytimes
on the go, the options are endless
when you play with texture!
curls and waves translate to a
vibrant image when combined
with the power of colour. The result
is an exquisite touch to the daily
hairdo, perfectly portraying the
multitudinous charm of confidence
of stylish modern Asian women.

Oxygen Curl - Korean Luxe
Hair Design: Hazy and dreamlike cloudy layers create a kind of soft sweetness A warm
brownie shade adds a silk-like glow, while height at the crown artfully kees a balanced
proportion to frame the face. By using a sophisticated warm brownie shade, the beautiful
wave wears a silk-like glow with soft and smooth touch, almost like carrying a diffusion
effect. Curlers are also added to sections of the crown to give roots additional height.
Styling: Twist and blow dry the permed hair using Stylesign Softwaver as a base and
moisturizer to gain shiny, bouncy curls. Apply a small amount of Stylesign Curl Control to
tame frizzy hair and then create a multi-layer texture leaving the hair smooth and dazzling.
Stylesign Twist Around is used to create a perfect glossy, long-lasting wave, while
effectively protect hair from heat damage for up to 230°C.
Teddy Curl - Japanese Casual
Hair Design: Softer curls deliver a refined bouncy feeling. These are paired the
irregular wave and texture with the easy-breezy Japanese hipster style. The exquisite
wave softly frames the face with a defined but tender touch, while the loose and casual
curl creates a cool yet lovely and playful image as the lively curls help to look both
younger and slimmer. The cool, smoky brown shades are a great match to the skin tone,
as if a built-in camera filter has been added to the look.
Styling: Teddy Curl is the perfect hairstyle for the clumsy fashionista. Dry hair after applying
styling products to create the ideal voluminous or loose texture. To achieve this more natural
3D curl, after using Stylesign Taming Oil on wet hair, apply some Stylesign Glamour Whip
and leave the hair to air dry naturally. Stylesign Magic Finish may also be used to get a more
shiny and elastic hold if necessary.
Oxygen Curl - Editorial Chic
Hair Design: Subtle curls create a natural and loosely tousled texture, which
stays gorgeous for outdoor activities even on a windy day. The warm, sweet
honey, brown shade amplifies the brightness of a sun-kissed hair colour,
creating a stylish finish that perfectly matches ethereal vibe of Oxygen Curl.
Styling: Again, simply twist and blow dry the permed hair with the use of
Stylesign Taming Oil and Stylesign Soft Waver as base and moisturizer to
gain more shiny and bouncy curls. Twist Around is used to reproduce the
perfect glossy wave with long-lasting yet not stiffening effect, and can
effectively protect hair from heat damage for up to 230°C.
Teddy Curl - Evening Glam
Hair Design: These defined and bouncy waves give impressive volume boost,
with a touch of vintage. An elegant smoky effect on the brown base creates
a high-class glamorous finish to the hair. The S-shaped long curtain bangs form
romantic curves, which are parted in the middle to beautifully frame the face.
Styling: This style emphasizes the sleek and wet look with impressive defined curls.
Apply Stylesign Glamour Whip, which acts as the perfect foundation, to wet hair
and use Stylesign Lagoom Jam for glossy layered effect. Stylesign Big Finish is then
used to give long-lasting and strong hold as well as all-day volume to the style.

Estetica had the opportunity to meet with the one and only Angelo Seminara in
Amsterdam. There, the Goldwell Global Ambassador presented his latest hair collection
during the Kao Salon Global Experience 2022. He combined an inspirational film
presentation with live models on stage to create an exciting, disruptive hairshow.
How did you come up with the idea of reinventing the concept of a hair show?
It’s something I started doing a while ago. I wanted to make shows more sustainable
and at the same time use the content we create in a different way, such as on social
media. The essence of a show is to get together, to have fun and to enjoy the spectacle.
With ‘Hair Every Wear 2.0’ I wanted to create a dialogue as a means to share and
communicate with my colleagues, especially after three years without seeing each other.
I therefore thought we needed to create something special and entertaining, while
keeping it simple at the same time.
You commented that you don’t see yourself as a master, but as an eternal student.
Yes. I always feel like I’m chasing after something. I need to feel I always have new
goals and challenges to achieve, ones which can also enhance and grow my role as
a hairdresser. I therefore feel it’s better to stay always humble and to accept that
sometimes you need to go into a room, lock yourself in and just practice. While I was
Known for his avant-garde, awardwinning
style, Angelo Seminara is one of
the most globally celebrated hairdressers.
Ambassador in the Summer of 2020.

working in the salon with Trevor Sorbie, one day he pulled me to one side.
He told me that I needed to understand that in this industry it’s 50/50: you
can’t just be artistic; if you don’t understand business as well, you can’t survive.
It’s important for young hairdressers to think like that, because nowadays
there are so many more opportunities for people to grow than there were in
the past. This doesn’t mean success is guaranteed – you still have to try.
Sometimes is good to fail - it pushes you to learn and grow.
I definitely agree. Strangely, I sometimes think it’s better to lose in a hair
competition. I know people who’ve been nominated for years and they never
win. However, if you look at their career, it would probably have stalled if it
wasn’t for their desire to keep competing So it’s not about the destination, for
me it’s the journey that really matters -that is what’s really important in life.
These days you are presenting your new tool, Solage. What is it all about?
I like what this tool Solage can do. It’s able to achieve the most beautiful
results in a really natural way. This is because, as its name suggests, it gives
a really sun-kissed effect. We’re talking about the effects of light and creating
something that looks really natural. If you learn how to use Solage confidently,
you can have great fun creating one colour, two colours, three colours, subtle
effects, babylights... whatever you desire. We have created four new
techniques, all based in different lights.
How would you describe it to your colleagues around the world?
Imagine we have two Picasso paintings: I’m going to put one in the dark for
5 years and I’m putting the other one outside for the same time. What do you
think is going to happen? One of the paintings is going to discolour naturally
and that is precisely the beautiful light effect that I wanted to create with hair.
What excites you the most about our industry?
For me, the way we do colour and everything about the world of colour - it’s
what really interests me. I love working with Goldwell and I am really inspired
by the amazing creative opportunities that Elumen and Elumen Play open up
for me. Colour for me is the key - it's also our main business in the salon. I
remember never, never, never leaving a client without colour in their chair.
You do a great haircut but how can you take it to another level? It’s like
turning a light on and you create tridimensionality, texture and volume - all
with colour. A beautiful colour also makes the hair look healthier.
What is your relationship with fashion and art?
I like to work with installations and fashion curators around the world,
because it really isolates me from what I normally do. It takes me into a world
that I don’t know as well as I might. I’ve been so lucky working in places like
China, Korea, USA, Mexico, France, Italy and Austria. I was recently at the
Venice biennale, with the amazing fashion and art curator, Judith Clark.
the gala evening held at the Amsterdam
outstanding stage shows by Angelo
A Word from the
Champions!
After their outstanding achievements at this year’s
Kao Global Creative Awards, we couldn’t wait to
interview the Asean category winners.
Team Asean proved their expertise in colour and styling is second to none, as they scooped three awards in the two
big international categories – New Talent and Creative Colour – as well as Gold in Avant Garde and Salon Team of
the Year. Here’s what our creative experts had to say about their incredible experience and huge success in
Amsterdam last October.
TIEW PEI YU
TIEW PEI YU, Malaysia, New Talent Gold Winner
How do you feel about your international experience at the Global Creative Awards?
l am very honoured and very happy, because it was such a precious experience of a lifetime.
What was it like being in Amsterdam?
It was a very good experience. You can go to different countries to see hairdressers from all over the world
communicating with each other and seeing different technology at work. It makes you realise just how spectacular
the international stage is.
Tell us about your winning look?
The inspiration behind my winning look was the metaverse & futurism.
What’s your advice for others thinking of entering the GCAs in the future?
Look through lots of fashion magazines to learn more about fashion, makeup, art and other aspects of the total look.
As a hair creative, what makes working in partnership with Kao so special for you?
Their continuous research and development into innovative products and technology can really help me with my
future development and perform better for my customers.
Who would you like to send some special thanks to?
I would like to thank Goldwell for this opportunity and, of course, my salon, The Editor Salon.

JUNZ LOKE, Singapore, Creative Colourist Gold Winner
So tell us more about your international experience like the Global Creative Awards?
It was awesome! It’s really an eye-opening experience to get to compete with the best hairdressers from around the world.
I think it’s more like a sharing platform than a competition and it gave me goose bumps when I saw the all the
international artists showcase their art work on the stage. I felt so motivated and pushed myself to be my best
What about Amsterdam, it’s a great city, isn’t it?
Yes, it is. I’ve always wanted to visit Amsterdam – it’s such a beautiful city. I am obsessed with the architecture, colourful
houses and the art scene it so inspiring. Besides the competition, I spent most of the time at galleries and in book stores.
Explain some more about the inspiration behind your winning look?
This striking hair creation is derived from 80s punk culture. It’s intention is to represent contrasting visual narratives
from both the inception of punk culture caused out of pop art tones played against on the art of “Kabuki”.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking of entering the GCAs in 2023?
It’s hard to be original nowadays, so stay curious and keep exploring. Look at the work of existing great hairstyles and
then add your own elements and transform them into your personalised art work.
Working in partnership with Kao must feel special after winning an international award like this.
Whenever I at work, I feel so confident with all the products. They help me to be more creative during the entire process.
Who would you like to send some special thanks to?
Of course, my amazing team: photographer, Zantz; stylist, Mae; make-up artist, Wee Ming and my models, Joanne &
Weng Yao. Thanks go to Ken Hong and Evolve for the biggest support possible in this competition. Thanks also to
Kao salon and Goldwell Singapore for organizing such a fantastic platform for all of us to express our creativity. I’m so
glad to have been part of it.
IAN LEE JIA PEI, Malaysia, Creative Colourist Silver Winner
What did being part of an amazing international experience like the Global Creative Awards mean to you
personally?
I feel very excited to have been able to witness what's happening on the global stage. The GCAs can bring together
hairstylists from around the world and we can learn so much from each other.
Were you impressed by the beautiful Dutch city of Amsterdam?
Amsterdam is an amazing city. There is such a great mix of different people and cultures there. I was able to learn
something about their culture as well. I love this beautiful city so much.
What was the inspiration behind your winning look?
My inspiration came from futuristic forms and the diversity of the metaverse. I really wanted to create a look from future.
So, what advice do you have anyone thinking of entering the GCAs in 2023?
Personally, the reason why I entered was to challenge myself and to break away from just working in the salon. I also
wanted people to help put Malaysia on the hairdressing map! Therefore my advice would be to challenge yourself, be
yourself and show the world who you are and where are you from.
As a creative colourist, what is special about working with Kao?
Kao provide me with a platform to explore lots of opportunities. They also teach me different skills that are very useful
and which I can share with other hairdressers.
Who would you like to send some special thanks to?
I’m very proud to be part of The Editor Salon’s team. I would like to especially thank Chefuu & Kai. I’d also like to
thank my girlfriend, family and all the people who have helped me on my journey. I believe that the support of others
is so important to our personal success.
TOM YEK TENG SIONG, Malaysia, Avant Garde Stylist of The Year Gold Winner
How did it feel to be part of an amazing international experience like the Global Creative Awards?
This is the second time for me participating in the Kao Salon Global Awards Editorial Avant Garde Stylist Of The Year.
The first time it was tough, as we needed to complete the design and photo-shooting during the pandemic restrictions.
I was so honoured to be shortlisted for the international top 6 last year. Although I did not win, it did not stop us from
coming up with new ideas and concepts. In the end, the effort paid off! It was such a honour to win this year and it’s
given me such a sense of encouragement.
What was the inspiration behind your winning look?
Weaving Art Heritage. Weaving has a long history and influence in Chinese culture. Traditional woven products are
quite rare nowadays and are replaced by machine manufactured products. People have lost their appreciation of
artisan beauty and look for instant gratification.
How did you find the live-streaming experience?
It is a pity that I was unable to participate at the live event in beautiful Amsterdam. I am, however, grateful that Kao
organized the live-streaming experience so I could enjoy the international competitions and amazing performances
on-stage. The whole thing was eye-opening and very rewarding.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking of entering the GCAs in 2023?
Persistence and hard work are the key to achieve your goals and dreams. Focus on the process not the results, even if you
lose you can always learn and gain new experiences. Be fearless, every downturn may signify another great achievement
ahead. Good luck!
What makes working in partnership with Kao so important from your perspective?
Professional hairdressing products from Germany, with more than 60 years of history and sales network of more than 40
countries. An established identity to transmit international hairdressing fashion information and trends, providing the
latest product knowledges and training, exclusive products line for hair stylists to achieving excellence and top-notch
satisfaction from the customers. Kao’s brands also provide platform and international competitions every year for hair
stylists to learn from each other and show themselves, nurturing the next generation of creatives.
Who would you like to send some special thanks to?
I would like to thank my wife for all of her support and tolerance, my family, the Decrypt team and my friend Peter
Pang for his precious advice. My photographer, Darren Loke, model agency elpismodels, make-up artist Tyler and my
teachers Sam Han, Elvin Soh, Kelvin Tang.. I also much appreciate Goldwell Malaysia for giving us such a great
platform on which to work.
SIEW THIAM KUI
SIEW THIAM KUI, Malaysia, Salon Team of the Year Gold Winner
How did it feel to be part of an amazing international experience like the Global Creative Awards?
It was such a great experience. To be able to participate in this event with hairstylists from all over the world was
phenomenal. When it was announced that we were the Gold winner, we couldn’t believe it because all the finalists’
work was so great.
Tell us about the Amsterdam experience?
I felt as if my horizons have been broadened. I saw so many interesting things. In addition to seeing the live competition, I
also saw the hair shows. The latest trends were amazing – really mind-blowing!
What was the inspiration behind your winning look?
The work is inspired by “Light in the Darkness”. Therefore, white is used as the main colour symbolising rebirth and hope.
We have also summarized our work into 3 different categories: the light of hope, the light of faith and the light of love.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking of entering the GCAs in 2023?
Don’t just think about it, but dare to participate. We can only win if we are finalists, so you’ve got to be in it to win it! To be
able to represent your country and join the 2023 event in Chicago is such an amazing opportunity.
What makes working in partnership with a Kao so special for you?
It’s amazing to be a partner with Kao. There are many Goldwell hair colour shades for me to choose from. Therefore, it
allows me to be creative without limits. In addition, the quality of Goldwell aftercare products is also guaranteed. So as
well as using them myself, I can retail them to my customers with confidence.
And finally... who would you like to send some special thanks to?
My team ,especially Weng Kin, Without him we wouldn’t have been able to do such a great job. Also my family -
especially my mum, who is always there to silently support me. I’d also like to mention my godbrother and sister-in-law -
large part of this works is inspired by them. Last but not least, I would like to thank my mentor, Mr Elvin Soh.
