Burglary 

victim tracks 

down stolen 

bracelet 

BURGLARS HAVE struck again 

in the Mt Pleasant area. 

A house on Monks Spur Rd 

was broken into between 8.30- 

11.30am last week. Among the 

items stolen were jewellery, iPads 

and a computer. 

The burglary comes after a 

woman recently tracked down 

a Pandora bracelet, stolen in a 

break-in at her home on Major 

Hornbrook Rd, in late November. 

She saw the stolen bracelet 

listed on Facebook Marketplace 

and called the police on their 105 

number to report the matter. 

But she said the police told her 

they would not investigate. So she 

arranged with the seller to buy back 

her bracelet for $200. She was disappointed 

with the police response. 

Said a police spokesperson: 

“We do receive reports from 

people finding what they believe 

to be stolen items on online 

marketplaces. Police will make 

inquiries into the reports and are 

committed to doing what they 

can to reunite owners with their 

belongings and holding offenders 

to account.” 

However, the burglary victim 

said police were not interested in 

her case. 

“I personally feel the police 

won’t do anything,” she told Bay 

Harbour News. 

“Crime is just ballooning.”

Largest mother of a clean-up 

ever planned along waterways

SIXTY FIVE community groups 

will take part in Saturday’s 

Mother of All Clean Ups – 

making it the biggest yet. 

Hundreds of people will clean 

the Heathcote River, the Estuary, 

Lyttelton 

Harbour Basin 

and Avon River. 

The first 

annual cleanup 

in 2015 

involved only

groups, Avon

Estuary Ihutai Trust manager 

Tanya Jenkins said. 

The trust was one of the 

project’s founders. 

Jenkins said the groups will be 

allocated a waterway and then 

will encourage members to get 

involved. 

The Mt Pleasant Yacht Club, 

Ferrymead Rotary Club and 

Diamond Harbour Residents 

Association are among those 

taking part. 

“It’s all about encouraging 

community groups,” Jenkins 

said. 

While the total waste collected 

has trended downward from 10.5 

tonnes in 2016 to 2.6 tonnes in 

2021, the amount of rubbish in 

waterways remains an ongoing 

issue. “We’re hoping every year 

to see a reduction in the amount 

of litter we pick up,” Jenkins said. 

“We do have an issue – let’s

councillor Sara Templeton has 

been involved with the clean-ups 

since they began. 

“I helped out at the first clean 

up back in 2015 when I was 

chair of the (former) Hagley/ 

Ferrymead Community Board 

and have been a big supporter 

ever since,” Templeton said. 

She usually cleans up around 

either the Tannery or Windsport 

Park on Dyers Rd. 

“It’s been amazing watching 

it grow year by year . . . The 

Heathcote Ward has many 

waterways. Smaller ones that 

come down from the Port Hills, 

the Ōpāwaho Heathcote River 

and, of course, the estuary. 

The event will include a 

new initiative this year – the 

High Five, I Can Pick Up Five 

campaign. 

It encourages everyone to pick 

up five pieces of litter outside 

their home. 

“The pick up five campaign 

is something people should be 

doing all year round,” Jenkins 

said. “If we all pick up five pieces 

of rubbish . . . that would be 

awesome. Then we’ll have the 

cleanest city in the country.”

“My studio is my home, my 

happy place,” she said. 

“I remember when I was six 

and was at my old studio in the 

Tai Tapu hall and early Saturday 

morning I would have rehearsal, 

it was so cold you could see my 

breath, but leg warmers and all, 

it felt like home, ballet is where I 

belong.” 

But getting to London will be 

no easy feat. 

Last Wednesday, Izzy’s family 

held a fundraising night, with 

members of the Little River 

community coming to hear 

guest speakers talk about their 

life experiences and challenges. 

At $35 per person, plus 

donations from those who 

couldn’t be at the fundraiser, 

Izzy and her family raised $1300 

for her trip and course fees.

When she was about 12, 

Izzy knew she wanted to be a 

professional dancer. 

She looks up to world-class 

ballerinas like Marianela Nunez 

of the Royal Ballet. 

“She’s just incredible to watch.” 

Another idol is Gillian Murphy, 

whom Izzy admires for her 

skill – and partly because she is a 

fellow redhead. 

Izzy’s last competition was 

the Alana Hains Australasian 

Awards in Wellington. She 

placed 25th out of 200 in her 

category and was one of the 

youngest in the group. 

“Being onstage with the lights 

and costumes feels amazing and 

so rewarding,” she said. 

“Having the opportunity 

to share my love and passion 

with the audience makes all the 

training and hours of rehearsals 

in pointe shoes all worth it.”

always had a good relationship 

with academy players in the UK, 

which is now continuing after 

a break during the Covid-19 

pandemic. 

“There’s quite a lot of history 

and a good relationship with 

clubs over there and we’ve also 

sent guys there, too,” he said. 

Professional players like 

Turner, Worboys and Duncan 

have come to New Zealand to 

fill position gaps for the club’s 

premier team. They receive help 

with flatting or boarding from 

the club when they arrive. 

Turner was already on 

the Crusaders coach Scott 

Robertson’s radar when he 

arrived, and made his debut in 

the 48-13 win over the Force on 

Saturday. 

The loosehead prop came on 

in the 58th minute. 

With player numbers in New 

Zealand continuing to drop, 

D’almeida believes clubs need 

to look outside local areas 

to maintain the standard of 

premier rugby. 

“You get a lot of flack for 

it from other clubs, like 

Lincoln University and their 

scholarships,” D’almeida said. 

“But when you look around 

at other teams, it looks like it 

stands out but it doesn’t. So 

many teams have Fijian, Tongan 

and Japanese players- it’s not too 

dissimilar.” 

As one of seven teams who 

have won two of four games, 

D’almeida is hoping for a strong 

crowd at their first home game – 

and another win.

Sumner will only play three 

home games this season after 

several warnings were given 

to the club last year after 

unregistered players took the 

field and team sheets were 

continually not being filled out 

correctly. 

Although Sumner have to wait 

until June 24 for their club day, 

Saturday’s game will no doubt 

be of interest for locals who have 

been waiting for over a month 

for the Wave’s first home match.

LOCAL COMMUNITY board 

chair Reuben Davidson plans 

to continue with the board role 

while he campaigns to become 

an MP. 

Davidson is the Labour candidate 

for Christchurch East, a 

seat being vacated by current 

Labour MP, Poto Williams. He 

got the nod over current MP Dan 

Rosewarne, who entered Parliament 

on the Labour list when 

Kris Faafoi left. 

The general election campaign 

gets into high gear in mid-July, 

but Davidson says he will stay on 

Te Pātaka-o-Rākaihautū Banks 

Peninsula Community Board 

for as long as it takes, because he 

wants to finish jobs he started. 

He won’t say when he’ll be 

resigning. “It’s about committing 

to the end of a process not to a 

date,” he said. 

He wouldn’t rule out staying 

on the board until the election in 

October, although he said “it is 

very unlikely”. 

“I’m just wanting to make sure 

that my resignation falls at the 

best time for the board,’’ said 

Davidson. 

“With doing the two jobs, I can 

see there is potential for an overlap 

but I take both very seriously

Davidson said he intends 

to move from Lyttelton to 

Christchurch East before the 

election and is donating his $385

City council electoral officer Jo 

Daly said the Local Electoral Act 

(2001) requires an elected member 

to give notice of resigning in 

writing to the chief executive, 

and an election must be held 

within three months after that. 

This means Davidson’s replacement 

probably won’t be decided 

until well after the general 

election. 

Daly told Bay Harbour News 

the cost for a by-election would 

be about $35,000.

Speed records and the Herzogin Cecilie: 

THIS LIVELY action photograph 

of hardy seamen at the wheel 

of the four-masted barque 

Herzogin Cecilie was taken on 

a voyage from Port Lincoln, 

South Australia, via Cape Horn 

to Falmouth, England, in 1935 – 

that particular journey recorded 

as lasting 117 days. 

The term barque derives from 

the french form of barge or bark 

(the etymology of the word is a 

chapter in itself), in english usage 

since as early as the late 1500s. 

By the mid 19th century 

the French spelling had been 

adopted and the term had come 

to refer to any ship with three 

or more masts and a particular 

kind of sail plan. Specifically, 

this was with the fore and main 

masts rigged square and only 

the mizzen (or aftermost mast) 

rigged fore and aft. 

This predominantly square 

rigging is evident in our photo 

of the barque Pamir (once 

captained by Whakaraupō 

Lyttelton Harbour’s own Captain 

Champion). 

It differed significantly from a 

fully-rigged (or brig-rigged) ship 

and enabled efficiencies of cost 

because less crew were required 

to manage the fewer sails; 10 men 

could manage the work rather 

than the usual crew of 30. 

Vessels rigged thus also sailed 

well to windward, handling 

admirably on routes with strong 

following winds. 

Built in 1902 by Rickmers 

Schiffbau AG in Bremerhaven, 

Germany, for the company 

Norddeutscher Lloyd Bremen, 

the Herzogin Cecilie was 

102.01m long and 14.10m wide 

with a 7.37m draught. 

She was named after 

the German Crown 

Princess, Duchess Cecilie of 

Mecklenbeurg-Schwerin, wife 

of Crown Prince Wilhelm 

of Prussia; Herzogin means 

Duchess in the german language. 

The elegant vessel earned a 

reputation as one of the fastest 

windjammers ever built with an 

early recorded speed of 21 knots. 

In the first decades of the 20th 

century, like others of her class, 

loaded with saltpetre she plied 

the trade route from Chile to 

England via Cape Horn. 

Saltpetre had many uses 

including as a fertiliser, but 

it was its primary role in the 

constitution of gunpowder that 

drove the trade in that era. 

At that time, merchant sailing 

ships could make the trip in 

around 120 days; Herzogin 

Cecilie’s record for that route in 

1903 was just 106. 

Over the course of her career, 

in part due to the vagaries of 

WW1, she sailed under german, 

french and finnish flags; interned

magnate Gustaf Erikson (aka

use on the increasingly lucrative 

grain route from the southern to 

northern hemispheres.

Post war, with demand for 

saltpetre in decline, she was 

put to compete in the so called 

“grain races” alongside other 

windjammers, battling to be first 

to get their cargo from Australia 

to England. 

There were potential economic 

benefits for vessels which arrived 

earliest as they were able 

to charge a premium for their 

South Australian grown wheat, 

but the reputational prestige of 

record holding for its own sake 

also held strong sway. 

Herzogin Cecilie won said 

races on six occasions with 

her best record being 86 days 

“round the Horn”; that record 

was surpassed only by another of 

Erikson ships the Parma which 

holds the all time record of 83 

days. 

Although we have found no 

record of the Herzogin Cecile 

visiting Ōhinehou Lyttelton, 

she was photographed along 

the Queensland coast and her 

pursuits were actively followed in 

shipping news columns in papers 

within Aotearoa New Zealand. 

No doubt the novelty of a “girl 

stowaway” on board added to 

the public appeal of this fast and 

glamourous vessel: 

‘A distinct touch of romance 

was imparted to the voyage 

of the Herzogin Cecilie from 

Port Lincoln to London, a girl 

stowaway being discovered after 

the barque had been three days 

at sea. When brought before 

the master of the ship, Captain 

de Cloux, she said she was a 

music teacher and journalist in 

Melbourne, and, bored with life 

in that city, had secreted herself 

in the hold of the ship when the 

vessel was lying in the Harbour 

at Port Lincoln. She declared 

her intention of remaining in

thick fog, Herzogin Cecilie 

grounded on Ham Stone Rock

Although refloated and later 

towed to safety at the mouth of 

the estuary near Salcombe, three 

years later she capsized and sank, 

to remain at a depth of seven 

metres to this day. 

Some of her fittings were 

salvaged and are held in 

museums at Captain Sven 

Erikson’s family home in 

Finland, and at Hope Cove in 

Devon. The now beautifully 

restored ship’s saloon graces the 

Åland Maritime Museum at 

Mariehamm, Finland.

NEWS 

Sumner’s new fire station opened on Saturday afternoon, with the 

public getting a chance to look through the $5.85 million building. 

The station replaced the previous building, which was damaged in the 

February 22, 2011 earthquake and demolished. Sumner brigade chief 

Daryl Sayer said the new station has many key features, such as a separate 

locker room and exhaust extraction – and it’s a warmer environment. 

“Before, all our gear was stored beside the trucks, so exposed to exhaust 

fumes, and the appliance bay was not heated, it was just a cold room.” 

The Government’s Covid-19 response and recovery fund contributed $2.9 

million towards the new station, which included purchase of an adjacent 

property.
