NEWS
NTDA
launches
new licence
for Mobile
Tyre Technicians
Following the tremendous success of its current Tyre Technician Professional Development
Scheme (TTPDS), which has seen more than 12,000 tyre technicians trained, assessed as
competent and issued with a licence since 2014, the NTDA has launched a new licence
specifically for mobile tyre technicians working on car and light vehicle tyres.
Speaking about the new licence, NTDA Chief Executive Stefan
Hay said: “The team at Aylesbury began to notice from 2020
onwards, that many of the companies now applying for
membership of the Association are mobile tyre fitting operations. In
fact, 6 of the new members who’ve joined in the last 12 months are
either exclusively, or primarily, mobile and many more membership
enquiries from such companies are in the pipeline.
It is safe to say, that the Association is now getting as many
enquiries from mobile companies as depot-based tyre retailers,
which is understandable as customers love the convenience of
having a tyre technician come to their home, place of work, or
roadside to deal with a tyre problem, but also want the assurance
that the technician is trained and fully competent. As a result,
many mobile companies are enquiring with both the NTDA and our
approved training providers regarding mobile tyre fitting for car
and light vehicle training and licensing. On a number of occasions,
the NTDA had been asked by such companies whether it would
be possible to introduce a REACT compliant Licensed Mobile Tyre
Technician card to complement the current suite of licences in the
TTPDS – this new licence is our response.
Before taking this initiative further, the NTDA sought the views
of the approved training providers on whether this was something
they would support and also whether they currently run training
programmes that would dovetail into such a licence. The response
was very positive with the majority of training providers supporting
the introduction of the new licence and stating that they already
offered, or could offer, suitable courses to support the scheme.
Clearly, as with all courses leading to NTDA licences under the
TTPDS, content is based on the relevant occupational standards
and will cover, as a minimum:
● Tyre history and construction
● Sidewall markings and labelling
● Car and light vehicle wheels
● Tubes, valves and Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems
● Issues affecting tyre life and how to manage them
● Customer care
● Health & Safety at Work including safe working at the
customer’s premises
● Mobile tyre fitting and balancing
● Minor tyre repairs in accordance with BS159g
● C&U regs
● Tyre damage and wear including how to inspect a tyre
● Roadside wheel changing procedure in line with
REACT recommendations
In conclusion Stefan Hay said: “The NTDA membership has
become a broad church. We have tyre retailers with national
networks of fast fit branches, traditional independent family
run tyre distributors, wholesalers and importers, mobile tyre
fitting companies and an extensive supplier membership of tyre
manufacturers, tyre collectors and re-processors, retreaders,
repairers, automotive training providers and tools, equipment and
consumables suppliers. Ensuring that we continue to represent
the interests of the members and support the professional
development of their employees is crucial to the future of the
trade, especially at a time it faces such a desperate skills shortage.
We hope, therefore, that uptake of the new licence will prove to be
as popular as our current licensing schemes and that our mobile
tyre fitting membership will continue to grow.
Fueltone widens distribution
network with Europit Tyres
Fuel additives and engine cleaning specialist Fueltone Pro has
expanded its network of stockists with Europit Tyres and Auto
Centres now offering the comprehensive fuel system product
range.
Two of Europit Tyres and Auto Centres branches, Clacton
and Heybridge (Maldon), will now offer customers a range
of fuel additives, engine, and diesel particulate filter (DPF)
cleaning systems, helping motorists achieve higher fuel
efficiency and reduce emissions.
Malcolm Rosher, commercial director at Fueltone Pro said:
“Considering the current economic climate drivers are rushing
to find ways of saving costs associated with running a vehicle.
“Fuel additives are a great way of improving fuel efficiency
and reducing harmful emissions, meaning drivers will get more
miles from a tank and make considerable cost savings over the
course of a year.”
The extension to Fueltone Pro’s network of retailers comes
as the company reports heightened demand for its range as
technicians and motorists turn to fuel additives and engine
treatments, to prevent issues on vehicles worsening, and avoid
the inflated associated costs of bigger problems requiring
repair.
Additive formulations help keep an engine clean and burn
fuel for longer and at a higher temperature, resulting in an
increase in power for every millilitre of fuel that the vehicle
consumes. Fuel additives are developed to reduce emissions,
improve fuel consumption, and clean up fuel system
components.
The company’s petrol and diesel additive chemistry sits
alongside Fueltone Pro’s range of engine flush treatments,
diesel particulate filter cleaning agents, and diesel system
primers.
NEWS
WAI warns of increased
electric vehicle cable theft
Rotating electrics supplier and
electric vehicle (EV) charging
cable specialist, WAI, is urging
EV owners to keep an eye on
their charging cables following
a spate of thefts across the UK.
Recent reports have seen increased
thefts of EV charging cables with
thieves selling on the cables as
scrap metal, much like car parts such as
catalytic converters.
WAI is encouraging EV owners to be
vigilant when it comes to charging their
electric car at home or out and about, as
EV charging cables become the next hot
product to be stolen, potentially leading to
thousands of EV owners getting stranded.
Not only can EV charging cables be sold
for scrap metal, but there is a “growing
used cable market through online sites”,
according to the AA. The AA also reported
damage to, or theft of charging cables, is
the biggest security concern drivers have
when it comes to owning an EV.
WAI introduced an EV extension cable
range to its product portfolio in 2021 in
preparation for the future of mobility
and to provide EV owners whose vehicle
doesn’t come with a public charging cable
as standard, an option to purchase one
for charging at home.
Richard Welland, managing director at
WAI says: “It’s important for EV drivers to
think about charging cable security. It’s
best to keep them stored or locked out
of sight to stop opportunistic criminals
seeing them and breaking into a vehicle to
steal them.”
The Motor Ombudsman’s 2023 Star
Awards invite consumers to shine
the spotlight on excellence
The Motor Ombudsman is pleased to announce that the 2023 Star
Awards, encompassing both the Garage Star and Customer Service Star
accolades, are now open for customer nominations on its dedicated
online Awards portal (TheMotorOmbudsman.org/Awards).
The annual competition was introduced by the Ombudsman
for the automotive sector in 2020 to recognise individual
team members and businesses accredited to one or more
of its four Motor Industry Codes of Practice, that have gone the
extra mile in the eyes of consumers. This could be for example,
during the repair or purchase of a new or used vehicle, or when
submitting a warranty claim or enquiry. Since the Star Awards
were launched, around 3,500 nominations have been submitted
to date – short accounts which showcase examples of excellence
and remarkable acts of kindness and generosity to help motorists
in their time of need, and to stay on the move.
More than 7,000 Motor Ombudsman-accredited franchise
dealerships, independent garages and body repair centres across
the UK are eligible to be put forward by motorists for one of the
eight Garage Star trophies representing different regions of the
UK, spanning Jersey in the south, to the Shetland Islands in the
north. Similarly, for the three Customer Service Star Awards on
offer, motorists can submit a nomination highlighting examples of
exceptional customer service provided by the UK head offices of
vehicle manufacturers, warranty providers and garage/dealership
groups that have committed to The Motor Ombudsman’s longestablished
Codes of Practice.
Entries can be submitted by consumers to the contest up
until the 15th October 2023, during which time, businesses can
promote the contest, and
be recognised in return
by their customers. From the
nominations received over the
coming months, a shortlist of three
names will then be compiled by The
Motor Ombudsman for each of the 11
awards available in the competition. This will
be based on a pre-defined set of criteria which
looks at how a team member or organisation went
above and beyond to assist a customer, as opposed
to the quantity of submissions received for a specific
person or business.
The finalists will then be passed to a panel of judges
to collectively decide the respective trophy winners
for this year’s Garage Star and Customer Service Star
Awards, as well as the two highly commended entries
for each of the categories. Judges will equally be tasked with naming
the recipient of the coveted National Garage Star Award, which will
be jointly chosen by the panel from this year’s eight regional Garage
Star Award winners.
Furthermore, in another first for the Star Awards, The Motor
Ombudsman has partnered with the Chartered Trading Standards
Institute (CTSI)’s Hero Awards. With the 2023 awards themed around
‘partnerships’, the National Garage Star Award will be presented
in-person to this year’s winner at the prestigious ceremony taking
place at the Houses of Parliament in London’s Westminster.
In recognition of claiming the top award in the competition,
the business or team member will receive an enhanced prize
of £2,000 worth of vouchers, as well as marketing exposure,
including a bespoke video filmed at their premises to highlight their
achievement.
Bill Fennell, Chief Ombudsman and Managing Director of The
Motor Ombudsman, said: “We are delighted to re-launch our search
for this year’s Garage and Customer Service Stars, and to shine the
spotlight on those who have gone beyond the call of duty. The Star
Awards are the perfect platform to bring these good news stories
to the fore, and for the businesses and individuals involved to be
publicly recognised for their high standards of service provided to
motorists.”
Bill added: “As we continue to evolve the prominence of our
Star Awards, we are also very pleased to be partnering with the
Chartered Trading Standards Institute to formally honour the winner
of the 2023 National Garage Star Award in a very special setting.
Based on the high calibre of last year’s entries, we expect this year’s
accolades to be another closely fought contest, and we look forward
to reading more great nominations from across the motor industry.”
OPINION
POOR
ADVICE
I bought two cars this month,
both with a common theme.
Ibought an Eos with a faulty roof, TPMS fault and interior
steaming up all the time. We agreed on a price (the preverbal
steal!) and away I go. A few days later I bought a 118i convertible
with a running fault and various bodywork issues. Again, we agree a
price (another absolute steal!) and away I go.
The Eos garage said her roof mechanism was seized and would
cost more than the car is worth, and that the TPMS light is on as
it’s a common fault, they all do that. I fixed the roof with a used
pump and a new boot catch for less than £100. I reset the TPMS
system, give it a proper service and fit a new thermostat to get it
to run hot. I even fit an aftermarket sat-nav screen with Bluetooth
for £80 and now it’s my daily, repaired for £300. The 118i was told
by her garage it needed a new fuel pump and ecu at a price of
£600. I get it back home and fit an ABS sensor for £20! As the price
reflected what she thought was wrong, I bagged another bargain.
Both owners were given incorrect/bad advice by their
respective garages which prompted them both to sell their cars
at a massively reduced price. I’m not going to say they were taken
advantage of because they were females, but I will say both
garages let them down.
The roof pump was an easy fix, but the TPMS just needed
resetting as she had new tyres fitted. That cost nothing to press
a button! The thermostat fixed the heating which dried out the
interior, which fixed the condensation.
I can’t even begin to explain the 118 though, they clearly didn’t
ask the right questions and didn’t confirm the fault. The flashing
light on the dash was the traction control as it was getting spurious
By Onkar Chahal
signal from the rear speed sensor. Turn the traction off and the
car drove ok. On the test drive I thought something was off but
couldn’t confirm it until I got it back. Fitted the new sensor and
problem resolved.
Both lost money on their car because of misdiagnosis and poor
knowledge. What is our industry doing? Why is the skill element so
low? Why aren’t they giving proper advice? Why were these two
women let down? I’ve kept in contact with them both and told
them what I have done and for how much (little?) Both asked the
same question. Why didn’t my garage do that for me?
I’ve also just bought another car, a 118d M-Sport convertible,
only this time the owner was a straight forward cheeky chap.
He was economical with the description and had all sorts of
excuses lined up for me. I wouldn’t have minded had I not driven
almost two hours to see it. This time I made an offer based on my
irritation and then explained how I saw through his weak excuses.
He looked a bit glum and disheartened before trying to negotiate
on price, which just irritated me more so I knocked another ton
off my offer. Now he’s really focused on the situation, accepts the
reality and my offer.
Was I harsh? Yes. Did he have to accept? No.
We conclude the deal and I leave, but this time I don’t keep in
contact. He lost money on his car because of his personality, not
on advice from his garage.
So that’s three convertibles in two weeks, we better have a good
summer this year!
ever-changing automotive landscape and
deliver a
best-in-class service.
Developed in conjunction with MPM Oil,
Pagid, Schaeffler, Shell, Valeo, Varta, and ZF
market leading concept network that gives
independent workshops all the tools, training,
and business support they need to grow.
Membership provides garages with
numerous benefits, including the latest
technical and diagnostic data to facilitate a
top-quality first-time fix every time, marketing
support and materials, business support to
help unlock further revenue streams, training
including access to LKQ Euro Car Parts’
award-winning LKQ Academy, and an exclusive
rewards platform.
Kevan Wooden, chief commercial officer,
LKQ Euro Car Parts said: “Collaboration is
key in these times of rapid technological and
regulatory change in our sector, while access
to the latest tools, training and technical data
is vital to garages working on modern vehicles.
“This is why, through 1TEC Auto Hub, we’re
seeking to create a network that supports
a professional community of independent
workshops and empowers them to futureproof
their businesses.
developing trust with customers. Our ambition
is to develop 1TEC Auto Hub into a brand that
consumers actively seek out for best-in-class
HELLA ValueFit Slim beacons
maximise safety and support
the latest workplace legislation
HELLA, the original equipment manufacturer
and system supplier, continues to lead
the way with a host of lighting solutions
that improve visibility and increase safety.
The latest addition to HELLA’s popular ValueFit range is the
Slim Beacon, delivering safety and visibility in an incredibly
sleek design with a height of just 50mm. Equipped with
single or double flashing functions, the beacon is maintenance
free and fully sealed and operates with both 12 and 24-volt
supplies.
Impact resistance is a given and the resilient polycarbonate
lens and robust aluminium base ensure that, despite its minimal
dimensions, the Slim Beacon is tough enough to cope with the
most arduous of conditions. It also offers an extremely high level
of electrical protection from voltage spikes and polarity reversal.
In keeping with HELLA’s reputation for product versatility
and to maximise the beacon’s fitting options, in addition to the
surface mounted version, a second variant with a flexible tube
allows the beacon to be situated in a slightly elevated position,
clear of possible sight restrictions, thereby delivering the highest
level of visibility. This shock absorbing and vibration damping
tube also affords some flexibility to cushion the beacon from
impacts.
Another considerable benefit of this new product is that
alongside the standard amber lens, which conforms with
specific UK legislation concerning safety and visibility of vehicles
and equipment in the construction sector, a green lens version
is also available. In this format, once the driver has secured
their seatbelt, the green light then flashes, confirming that the
operator is compliant with the latest regulations introduced in
2019.
HELLA’s complete ValueFit work lamp series, which provides a
cost-effective solution that complements its premium range, is
suitable for trucks, trailers, construction and agricultural vehicles
and naturally conforms to the same tests and approvals, such
as electromagnetic compatibility and overvoltage protection,
plus vibration, temperature and chemical resistance, as more
expensive offerings.
For more information concerning HELLA lighting or its other
aftermarket products, please contact the sales team on 01295
conference and awards dinner will be back in 2023, taking place on Thursday 7 December
at the DoubleTree by Hilton, Milton Keynes.
After a successful return to its face-to-face event last year, the IAAF is pleased to be hosting its
annual industry conference and awards dinner again for 2023. It is set to be another day and night
of inspirational and informative talks, insights and trends from industry experts, plus networking
opportunities, announcement of the IAAF award winners, fantastic food and exciting entertainment.
The event is predicted to sell out fast, so the federation is encouraging the automotive aftermarket
to book tickets now to avoid disappointment.
Mark Field, chief executive at IAAF comments: “We’re back with the IAAF conference and awards
dinner on Thursday 7 December – and it’s going to be an event not to be missed!
“We hope businesses in the aftermarket will join us in celebrating our brilliant sector once again and
we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone back to the DoubleTree by Hilton in Milton Keynes for
another day and night of exciting talks and entertainment.”
The 9th Tyre Industry Conference, sponsored by GB Tyres
(UK) Ltd is taking place on Thursday 19th October at the
DoubleTree by Hilton Milton Keynes.
Every year, the FREE to NTDA members conference, which
precedes the NTDA Annual Dinner and attracts in excess of 200
delegates, is an ideal opportunity to meet fellow tyre industry
professionals, consider new ideas, gauge the market, network with
industry leaders and advance professional CPD.
Delegates have the opportunity to hear from a range of
influential automotive industry and wider business experts covering
an array of fascinating topics and the 2023 line-up is already taking
shape with the following speakers having already confirmed:
Gavin Hughes - The importance of safe,
compliant and competent tyre repair
Gavin Hughes is the UK Sales Manager for Rema Tip-Top
Automotive and has over 10 years’ experience in the Automotive
and Leisure industries having worked with clients from sole trading
independents through to OEMs such as Bentley, Aston Martin,
Lamborghini and JLR.
Gavin also brings with him a wealth of knowledge from other
industries having worked extensively with companies like Princess
Yachts, JCB, Balfour Beatty, Costain and Oxford University.
Gavin’s forte is developing new ideas with customers in order
to provide solutions and add value through product and service
development.
Phil Robinson - The benefits, new developments
and trends in tyre retreading
Phil is Marangoni’s Senior Country Manager for the UK, Ireland and
United Arab Emirates.
He joined the automotive industry over 25 years ago, initially as a
technician. Since then, he has gained extensive experience of the
trade, having worked for vehicle parts suppliers, in tyre wholesale
and distribution, tyre manufacturing and retreading. He currently
represents the tyre retreading sector on the NTDA’s Executive
Council.
Vehicles are Phil’s passion and he says that it is this passion that
makes working in the automotive industry an absolute pleasure.
TREE; an innovative programme working to improve the long-term
sustainability of the natural rubber supply chain in Sumatra.
Mark Styles - The impact of market acquisitions and
the consumer shift to digital-first consumption on tyre
retailers of all sizes
the Managing Director of a Software and Digital solutions business
based in the UK, operating primarily within the automotive
ecommerce and digital marketing sector.
international tyre operations, he brings with him 20 years of
experience in the automotive industry.
maintain CAM’s position as market leader in software and digital
solutions for the tyre industry.
Scotty is the highest-ranking black officer in the history of the
Royal Marines and led Britain’s Commandos on missions all over the
world. He will be sharing his lessons of leadership and resilience
working as a performance coach in the world of elite sport and
entire Armed Forces community.
Nick Gilbert - The Future of Tyre Stewardship
Having started his career in construction, Nick moved to
Rolls-Royce Plc where a successful international graduate
programme led to a Global Marketing Officer role. This was his first
foray into the world of marketing and selling technical products
that are so often seen but not fully understood. He continued to
work in the science, medical and clean technology space for a
couple of years before, in his words, “seeing the light” and moving
into the tyre industry in 2014.
Joining Michelin, Nick realised that the tyre industry was where
he really belonged; talking about tyres, looking at tyres and driving
INTERVIEW
Pauline
Brookes
Head of Kingfisher Motor Trade
Pauline Brookes leads the Motor Trade team at Kingfisher Insurance, the headline sponsors of this
year’s Professional Recovery Tow Show. We caught up with her to discuss how Kingfisher Insurance
can support the industry, what she likes to do outside of work, and plans for the future.
You’ve worked in insurance for many years and are well known
by many people in the sector. You now head up the Motor Trade
team at Kingfisher Insurance, who have kindly agreed to be
headline sponsors of the Professional Recovery Tow Show this
year. Tell us a bit about Kingfisher and the team you work with.
Kingfisher Motor Trade offers a fresh approach to insurance for
motor traders and recovery operators. We are a new name in the
sector, but we have a fantastic team with decades of experience
and real knowledge of risks in the industry.
I firmly believe we’ve got the best people in insurance broking
in this sector. We’re all humble people who want to help motor
traders to succeed.
Insurance is the foundation that our clients build upon to go out
and trade with confidence. Our job is to make that happen, so our
clients can sleep easy at night.
There are lots of insurance brokers out there. What makes
Kingfisher different?
Kingfisher Insurance are genuine specialists in all they do. Lots of
brokers have specialists in a particular area, but with Kingfisher
Motor Trade, we have a full team of them – and it’s all they do!
We always start by going out to see people, because we know the
best way of helping people is to meet them face-to-face. We know
this is time well spent and benefits everybody we deal with.
We have traditional values, so getting to know people and
how their business works is important to us. It gives us a great
understanding of what our clients do and what they don’t do, so we
can search for the most appropriate insurance solutions – just for
them. It also gives them confidence in the way that we work, too.
It’s important that we become a part of their team who they
can call upon for support, instead of a faceless company who
disappears at the first sign of a problem.
It’s fair to say most people won’t have heard of Kingfisher
Insurance. Can they be confident that the company is big enough
to look after their needs?
Kingfisher Insurance is part of a large specialist insurance company,
NSM Insurance Group, who focus on building successful businesses
in niche sectors. Kingfisher Insurance is one of their UK businesses.
Our team has the security of a big company sitting behind us,
giving us the freedom to work hard to discover the challenges
businesses face, and how we can respond to them. This helps us
develop exclusive products or arrangements with insurers that
other insurance brokers don’t have access to.
We really do offer the best of both worlds – old-fashioned
service, where we can discuss your insurance arrangements in a
relaxed way over a coffee or a cup of tea, and the financial clout to
look for the best deals possible with insurers.
INTERVIEW
What is the biggest challenge you see facing us in the months and
years to come?
There are many issues, but an increasing risk is the maintenance,
recovery, storage, and disposal of electric vehicles.
There’s no doubt that the number of EVs on our roads is going to
increase, which will pose challenges for the industry. We’re aware
that not everyone is authorised to work on parts of EVs, yet main
dealers are not always available to take possession of recovered
vehicles. This leads to them being towed elsewhere and stored,
creating greater risk and taking up valuable time and space.
We will continue to look at this situation to see how insurers can
respond to help businesses involved in recovering and servicing
EVs in future.
Away from business, how do you like to spend your time?
I love to get up early each day and take my dogs walking. They are
constant companions and give me a reason to get up and going
in the morning, keeping me fit and healthy. And they tend not to
argue with me like some people do!
We took them away on holiday with us to Devon a couple of
months ago, and it was so nice to see them running around on the
beach and enjoying themselves, while relaxing and getting away
from it all ourselves.
I’m currently taking my youngest Springer Spaniel, Brodie, to gun
dog training, which he really enjoys and is getting better at all the
time.
In spring and summer, you will see me chilling in the garden.
Hopefully there will be enough sun and warmer days than there
were in March!
people as we can, so we’ll make sure there are good reasons to
come and talk to us, and to have some fun, too!
I’ve been coming to the show year in, year out since the first
show in 2003, and I’ve seen so much change, but the one thing that
remains is the warm welcome everybody extends to each other.
It’s really exciting for Kingfisher Motor Trade to be the headline
sponsor of the event and working with Professional Recovery to
bring everyone together for what we hope will be the biggest and
best show to date.
What are your plans for the future?
Kingfisher Insurance want to be seen as the most trustworthy,
friendly broker to do business with. We’ve built our business
upon traditional broker values, and our approach is to work in
partnership with our clients for the long-term, to understand and
protect their business.
We want Kingfisher Motor Trade to be recognised by everyone in
the industry, so we will work hard to be successful – if we succeed,
so do all the businesses that we support.
We already have an exclusive product to support the motor
trade, but we will work hard to stay ahead of the competition with
new products and services as the industry changes. Our aim is to
be here for you for years to come.
We’re looking forward to the Tow Show this September. As
headline sponsors, do you have any surprises in store for us?
Well, if I told you that, it wouldn’t be a surprise, would it?!
It goes without saying that we’ll want to see and speak to as many
Kingfisher Motor Trade - Launching Soon!
A new motor trade insurance provider
that you’ll want to meet!
We are an established and experienced
team of motor trade insurance professionals,
who have created a brand-new product for
today’s motor traders. Traditional broker
service values are embedded in our DNA,
so we don’t take any short cuts, but instead
take the time to visit every business and
ensure you get the cover you need to let
you sleep easy at night.
Bridgestone’s ‘Inspirational’ Headquarters
officially reopened by gold-medal
ambassadors
Bridgestone’s gold medal ambassadors
Adam Peaty and Charlotte
Worthington have officially reopened
the company’s ‘inspirational’ new-look
Warwick headquarters, following an
extensive refurbishment.
The greatest men’s breaststroke
swimmer in history and the freestyle BMX
gold medallist were guests of honour at
Bridgestone’s Tachbrook Park home and
welcomed back up to 150 members of
staff to the building, which is now one of
the most contemporary work spaces the
company has ever created.
It is home to the organisation’s sales
and back-office support teams and will
now house the Webfleet Solutions team,
who have now moved out of their previous
London location to be even closer to their
Bridgestone colleagues.
Not only has space has been customdesigned
to offer various options for flexible
working in line with the Bridgestone’s
smart working philosophy, but it features
collaborative open spaces to make it
suitable for community groups to visit and
learn more about the company. These
will include open days for schools and
educational placements for university
students, who can learn more from a
number of professionals across a range of
different departments.
Meeting spaces have been fitted with
technology to enable seamless and engaging
collaboration with hybrid teams from across
the world, while a gym, games-room and
multi-faith room have also been created
in line with a ‘healthy-body, healthy-mind’
approach to working life.
Sustainability and efficiency were two
concepts that underpinned the project
from concept through to creation, with
a number of elements from the previous
environment recycled into key features of
the new setting. These include glass from
old offices being repurposed into vibrant
new meeting rooms, while furniture has
also been selected with sustainability in
mind by re-using existing assets, while
opting for local suppliers.
The headquarters is powered by 100%
renewable energy, with all heating and air
conditioning installed to provide a more
efficient and sustainable setting.
Bridgestone’s North Region Vice
President Andrea Manenti said: “It was
a huge honour to welcome Adam and
Charlotte to our offices and officially
reopen them for our colleagues.
“The investment in our Warwick
headquarters is so much more than an
office refurbishment, but a commitment
to our employees, our partners and the
community. Bridgestone is evolving into
a sustainable solutions company and we
created our E8 Commitment to guide us on
this long-term journey. Our new office is a
living testament to this philosophy, bringing
our environmental promises to life.
“It’s an inspirational place to work from
and an investment to our staff to provide
them with a better connected, more
collaborative and inspirational working
environment. The investment is also a
commitment to the West Midlands and
Warwickshire, which has been our home
for many years now.
“We are embarking on a new chapter as
a business and the county has always been
close to our hearts. We support community
initiatives here in Warwickshire and a great
number of our colleagues are from the
local area. We couldn’t envisage being
anywhere else. This project reaffirms our
commitment to the area, which will be our
home for many, many years to come.
“It’s a home to be proud of and we look
forward to welcoming our partners to visit
in the coming weeks and months.”
Bridgestone’s Warwickshire investment
represents a major part of the company’s
mission to continue to provide social and
customer value as a sustainable solutions
company toward 2050. It is the most
visual embodiment of the Bridgestone E8
Commitment – a set of eight areas (Energy,
Ecology, Efficiency, Extension, Economy,
Emotion, Ease, Empowerment) which
provide a compass and guides Bridgestone
to conduct business in a sustainable way.
The office refurbishment aligns with
excitement and spreading joy to the world
of mobility.’
VLS celebrates
10 years of protecting
lubricants consumers
at Automechanika
Birmingham
The Verification of Lubricant Specifications (VLS) is looking
forward to exhibiting at Automechanika this year. The
independent membership body will mark a significant milestone
as it celebrates ten years of upholding standards in the lubricants
industry by providing a credible means to impartially verify
lubricant specifications.
Back in 2013, VLS was formed amid concerns that some
lubricant products were being sold with claims that did not
seem believable. Closer inspection found that sub-standard
formulations were occasionally passed off as the latest specifications
or even failed to perform effectively. The vast majority of
lubricants sold in the UK market at the time were fully compliant.
However, out of this concern, reputable lubricant blenders and
manufacturers came together to launch VLS.
Since then, VLS has investigated 86 different lubricant
complaints from cold weather properties to compliance with
industry standards and market regulations. The work is ongoing,
with eight cases currently under review. Over the years, the
types of cases that VLS has handled have changed, and it has
adapted to reflect the market’s needs. In 2019, VLS launched
NEWS
new marketing claims guidance in response to cases involving
overclaiming of specifications. In 2020, VLS entered a primary
authority relationship with Buckinghamshire & Surrey Trading
Standards to support greater compliance for members and the
industry by providing assured advice on lubricant marketing issues
and the basis of claims in consumer law, as well as providing an
intervention and escalation route for non-compliant products in
the case of non-cooperative lubricant marketers.
When VLS was first formed in 2013, there was clearly a lack of
understanding in the marketplace. VLS is confident that ten years
later, the message around compliance is being heard. Lubricant
blenders, manufacturers and distributors alike know that they will
be held to account by VLS to ensure that lubricants are correctly
described and can deliver what they claim. But as the industry
evolves, a recent influx of cases shows that there is still work to
be done to ensure an open and fair marketplace in which end
users can have confidence.
Find out more about the work of VLS and how you can raise a
case or become a member by visiting them in Hall 19 Stand S60.
ALLDATA Europe’s commitment to UK and Irish garages
and bodyshops upscaled with team expansion
To reinforce ALLDATA Europe’s commitment to garages and bodyshops in the UK
and Ireland, the OEM repair data provider has bolstered its team. The planned
growth is part of ALLDATA’s overall strategy to bring OEM technical data from
(as of today) 29 vehicle manufacturers to garage and bodyshop professionals who
need original and unabridged repair and maintenance information.
As technology used in modern vehicles
becomes more sophisticated, the
difficulty of diagnosis and repair
increases. ALLDATA Europe is in a unique
position to offer a comprehensive set of
technical data created for each vehicle
model from any of the OEMs it has the
licence to re-publish.
With access to ALLDATA Repair, garages
and bodyshops can confidently accept more
challenging work that they previously may
have turned away because they lacked the
repair methods, necessary information and
confidence to complete the job.
An annual subscription gives instant
access to relevant repair data and methods.
Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs), diagnostic
trouble codes (DTCs) and electrical systems/
wiring diagrams are also included. Data is
supplied with an intelligent search engine
function to enable technicians to find the
required information in seconds.
The frequently updated database offers
91,950 year, make model and engine (YMME)
vehicle combinations, which equates to
more than 95% of vehicles on the road
today. ALLDATA Repair possesses a library
of six million technical drawings and wiring
diagrams, including electrical connector
views, which are available in five languages.
What’s more, to demonstrate the all-compassing
ability of ALLDATA Repair, ALLDATA
Labour Times was recently launched. With
just one click, professionals can now see
accurate OEM labour times that correspond
with repair information – both mechanical
and body – as well as maintenance
procedures for a specific vehicle in ALLDATA
Repair.
ALLDATA is trusted by over 400,000 users
worldwide – and momentum is growing
domestically as the new team increase the
awareness of ALLDATA Repair with each new
customer they encounter.
Sales Director, Simon Frost, leads the
team with many years’ experience of selling
technical data licences to garages in the UK
and further afield in Europe.
He said: “There’s a great buzz in the
team, which boasts seasoned industry
professionals, with a united enthusiasm to
go forward and communicate the unique
benefits that ALLDATA Repair possesses.
We’re bringing the word to garages and
bodyshops. So far, the reception has been
overwhelmingly positive; there is a desire
to access the data that franchised dealers
have. It’s an unrivalled offer in the market.”
Simon is supported by Steve Robson, who
already has six-and-a-half years’ experience
with ALLDATA on his CV. New recruits, Aydin
Ozmen, Eric Ware, Gerry Clancy and Marta
Perlinska, all join with strong automotive
backgrounds.
Matthew Wright has accomplished plenty
during his four-year spell as Director,
Information Insights and OEM Relations. He
is responsible for negotiating and overseeing
OEM licence partnerships. He also oversees
product development and regulatory
compliance.
Technical support specialists, Steve
Derham and Dirk Vennemann, bring more
than 40 years’ experience in the workshop
and customer support arena. They offer
swift, accurate and timely assistance to
the ALLDATA customer network via the
‘Info Centre’ support hub. Having a ‘live’
help service is highly valued by ALLDATA
customers.
Meanwhile, Kim Brown, one of the
longest-serving members of the team, is
invaluable in her account management
position. She is instrumental in offering
after-sales support and in sales order
processing. Kim is the conduit between the
Banner Launches
next generation
of Bike Bull
Batteries
Banner - one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of starter
and electrical system batteries – has launched its latest
generation of start-stop Bike Bull GEL batteries to coincide
with the start of the biker season.
Offering improved performance and reliability for all classes and
types of motorbikes, the range of six new racing type batteries is
characterised by a combination of the highest vibration and cycle
resistance, whilst also being fully leak proof for added safety.
Due to the innovative technology deployed in their design and
production, the new batteries are already pre-charged and ready
for immediate use. Such features mean there is no requirement for
acid handling or additional recharging.
The new-to-range Bike Bull GEL batteries provide Banner with
coverage of an additional 2600 motorbike, moped and scooter
applications, whilst also being suitable for use in ATVs/Quads, jet
skis and lawn tractors.
As Banner’s Country Manager, Lee Quinney states: “The new
start-stop Bike Bull GEL batteries represent the latest in terms
of quality, reliability, power and performance. Available in a range
of sizes and capacities, customers can now gain access to an
NEWS
enhanced Bike Bull product offering that meets the requirements
of approximately 95 per cent of the European motorbike, moped
and scooter market.”
One of the main drivers behind Banner’s development of its
Bike Bull GEL range is the prediction that by 2025 the share of
motorbike batteries in the global, two-wheeler market will reach
a level of around 75 million units. Such an upward sales trend
will be further boosted by both the demand for fuel-efficient,
two-wheelers with start-stop technology and governmental
directives aimed at cutting fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Additionally, and given that all Banner batteries form part of a
well-established and proven recycling system, products such as the
latest generation bike Bull batteries are almost certain to strike an
accord with nature-loving fans of the great outdoors.
EBAY launches
‘Certified Recycled Portal’
EBAY launches ‘Certified Recycled Portal’ revealing British
motorists saved £99 million by switching to used parts.
Motorists in the UK saved £99 million in 2022 by opting
for used parts and accessories instead of brand-new
replacements, according to new research by eBay. The
online marketplace revealed the impact of second-hand parts
as it relaunched its Certified Recycled programme, which sells
recycled vehicle parts from 81 certified sellers.
Certified Recycled parts can be up to 70% cheaper
compared to OEM parts RRP*, and deliver peace of mind for
shoppers. All parts are vetted and warrantied – body parts
feature a 12-month warranty while mechanical parts come
with three months of protection – and are only supplied from
end-of-life vehicles from approved sellers.
Additionally, they also come with a reduced environmental
footprint. Last year, eBay UK shoppers buying used car parts
and accessories saved more than 16,000 tonnes of CO2e and
prevented 3,000,000kg of waste from ending up in landfills,
simply by choosing not to buy a box-fresh part.
This saving resulted from the millions of used parts sold
across the eBay site last year, including almost one million
exterior parts and accessories (including items such as mirrors,
bumpers and door handles), over 400,000 lighting parts, and
over 130,000 engine-related parts.
Certified Recycled parts provide motorists with added
peace of mind. They are sold by businesses that have been
checked and certified by the Vehicle Recyclers Association
(VRA) and are subject to an annual audit of their processes
and policies. This means that any part listed has been sourced
from and can be traced to an end-of-life vehicle, and has been
accurately identified, recorded, tested and graded.
Dr Tony Tong, Head of Automotive at eBay UK, said:
“Certified Recycled parts can be a huge benefit to customers
and businesses alike. With parts delays, rising costs and more
focus than ever on making the right choices to reduce our
carbon footprint, these parts have the potential to help save
money, time and the environment.
“We’re making it as easy as possible for people to find these
parts, and to understand the potential benefits they bring, in the
hope that motorists will increasingly choose Certified Recycled
parts as alternatives to buying brand new items.”
The first Certified Recycled part was listed on eBay in June
2020, and the marketplace now hosts 81 certified sellers across
the UK. Sales of the parts continue to grow, with an increase of
more than 10% between 2021 and 2022.
Jonny Smith, motoring journalist and frontman of The Late
Brake Show, said: “I have owned dozens of cars, and always
have a fleet of classic and modified project cars on the go. From
regular maintenance items to obscure and ultra-rare parts and
accessories, eBay has long been my first port of call.
“There are huge benefits to Certified Recycled parts over
new components – especially lower quality pattern parts – and
this has become especially relevant in current economic times,
where your budget needs to go further, or when availability on
new parts has been patchy.”
According to eBay research, 16.1% of motorists often buy
recycled parts to save money, while 14% choose used items to
reduce their carbon emissions^. While some car owners are
happy to buy parts themselves, one-in-10^ stated they would
prefer to buy recycled parts from a professional service centre,
highlighting the important role that garages and workshops can
play in changing buyer behaviour.
Ring Carnation hails
the CV Show a success
The Ring Carnation stand was buzzing with activity over
the three days of the CV Show at the NEC in Birmingham
and the company was thrilled with the interest in the two
brands on display: Ring Carnation and OSRAM.
The stand displayed an extensive range of products from both
brands and staff were on hand to demonstrate the benefits of
the products and discuss opportunities with visitors.
Ring Carnation is a vehicle conversion electrical specialist that
has been the market-leading supplier of switching systems with
the emergency services since 1995, with genisys remaining the
controller of choice.
Visitors were particularly interested in the genisys gII ECU,
which is equipped with a high performance 32-bit 300Mhz Atmel
Cortex®-M7 processor, with 2MB of on-board memory and 16
analogue inputs, enabling monitoring of multiple conditions such
as battery voltages, temperature and pressure. The genisys II
ECU Classic (gII ECU Classic) has more processing power, bigger
memory, greater control capability, higher efficiency and new
user-friendly service features.
Also on the stand was OSRAM, displaying its growing range of
working and driving lights for trucks and commercial vehicles.
Lighting Marketing Manager for OSRAM, Terri Clark, said: “We
were thrilled with the response we got at the CV Show, we had
many conversations with new and current customers and met
people who were interested in both the Ring Carnation and
OSRAM brands. We certainly think it was a success from both
a new business and brand awareness point of view and look
forward to continuing the business conversations we had.”
Henry Bisson, Marketing Director at Ring, commented: “It was
great to be back at the CV Show, we had a lot of interest from
potential customers around our genisys power management
system. It never fails to amaze us to hear and understand what
different requirements customers have out in the market for
mobile work units. It was also great to catch up with existing
customers (some exhibiting themselves) to understand what
projects they are working on and where we can support.”
The Schaeffler REPXPERT team of
technical manager, Alistair Mason and
digital marketing expert, Tony Yates, were
delighted to accept the invitation from
vehicle maintenance lecturer Darren
Ratcliffe, to visit students at the college
undertaking a City & Guilds in motor
vehicle mechanics, because showing
and explaining the complex systems now
fitted to today’s cars brings a practical
application into their courses.
“Although some of the guys will be
destined for a career in the franchised
dealer network, many will find themselves
in the independent sector, which means
they are the LuK fitters of the future,”
said Alistair. “So, supporting the college
whilst giving the students the opportunity
to learn more about double clutch
transmissions and providing an insight of
our LuK 2CT installation training, shows we
have their interests at heart.”
As an indication of what the visit meant
to the collage, Darren Ratcliffe said: “On
behalf of everyone at Tameside College, I
just wanted to thank Alistair and Tony for
taking the time to visit us today and deliver
the excellent training to the students and
staff that were present. I know I personally
learned a lot from the presentations
and demonstration. I also want to say
a big thank you for the resources and
equipment that Schaeffler provided for
us, these will all prove very useful in the
classroom and in the workshop.”
Information on Schaeffler products
and systems, fitting instructions, labour
times and much more can be found on
the REPXPERT app, downloadable for free
for all iOS and Android devices, or at www.
repxpert.co.uk. Alternatively, for live help
from one of their technical team, call the
REPXPERT hotline on 0872 737 0037.
PEOPLE
People stories and movements from around your industry
Tina Drayson named Head
of the IAAF Garage Section
Tina Drayson, Operations Manager
at CCM Garage has become the
new Head of the Independent
Automotive Aftermarket Federation
(IAAF) Garage Section, as well as
being appointed to the IAAF Council.
As part of the role, Drayson will
support the Federation’s expansion
into the garage section, which has
seen the recruitment of more than 1500
garages so far in 2023, while continuing to
bolster its lobbying capability and broaden
its support to independent workshops.
Since the move to recruit garages was
announced, the Federation has enjoyed
a 94 percent conversion rate across all
garages spoken to, underlining its ambition
to bring garages into membership and to
bring the supply chain closer together. IAAF
member packs and IAAF signage are now
being distributed to garages across the UK.
Drayson oversees the operations of
CCM Garage and has now also stepped
into the voluntary IAAF role to help ensure
the IAAF’s garage section fully supports
the needs of a modern garage across all
levels of the business, from legislation to
technical support.
Taking on a multi-specialist approach to
best serve the evolving vehicle parc, CCM
Garage is supported by its emphasis on
first-class customer support.
The business, based in the south east,
employs 30 technicians, mechanics, MOT
testers and a dedicated support team who
maintain and service all makes and models
of cars and light commercial vehicles,
alongside technical and specialist services
to the trade.
On her new role, Drayson, said: “Using
my experience at CCM Garage, it’s clear
to see the challenges that garages face in
the modern world, from facing increasingly
restricted access to data and technical
information, to the rising cost of running
a business amid the ongoing cost-of-living
crisis. It was therefore an honour to be
given the opportunity to head up this
integral section of the Federation and I
look forward to welcoming and supporting
more garage members over the coming
months and year.”
Mark Field, Chief Executive of the
IAAF, added: “I’m delighted that Tina has
become the new Head of the IAAF Garage
Section, as her vast experience makes her
an ideal candidate for the role. It has given
the section of the IAAF a real boost and I
look forward to working with her to offer
independent garages something different
and a fresh approach that supports their
business and the people that work in the
market.”
