PRESTON’S

HISTORY & HERITAGE

“Preston was first settled by John

Kaercher (pictured) in 1853 and the

town was officially organized in 1855.

The location was desirable, as the

Root River afforded opportunities for

Kaercher to establish his flour mills along

the river. The area offered abundant

supplies of timber, water power,

stonework and railway service. Preston

WHEN TO VISIT SUMMER

June through August

Rivers run full. Bike trails are clear. The town

swimming pool is open for a quick plunge to cool

down from the hot summer sun. Town festivals

are in full swing. The town jumps to life with its

unique shops, restaurants and many exciting

and fun events. Hiking, biking, camping, fishing,

golfing... a list of summer’s pleasures in Preston

and the Root River Trail Towns goes on and on.

WINTER

November to March

Snowmobiler or not, our winter

is when our valley, covered in

snow, lives up to its image. It's

the time for cross-country skiing

on our many miles of State

Trails, snowmobile treks, and

sitting beside a quiet fireplace

watching the snow settle. You

can also fish in town for catch

and release trout.

SPRING

April through May

Although weather

is unpredictable in

Minnesota, this is when

the trout fishing comes

alive and people

start gearing up for the

warmer days ahead.

Preston’s Trout Days Celebration takes

place each year in May.

FALL

September to early November

For those who might see the options

of summer as a bit too much to

handle, fall is essentially a quieter

version. The fall colors are vibrant

and you can travel through the

area while stopping at one of our

two orchards! What would fall be

without an apple treat?

LARGEST CHIMNEY SWIFT BIRD POPULATION IN MN

Audubon Minnesota recognized Preston as having the

largest and most active Chimney Swift population in

the state. Swifts feed exclusively on flying insects, like

mosquitoes, which is “good news” for bikers and campers

in Preston. Gather nightly from April through August at dusk

at the Trailhead parking lot to watch these amazing birds

dive by the hundreds into their nighttime roosts.

FILLMORE COUNTY AIRPORT

The Fillmore County Airport includes a 4,000 by 75-foot

paved runway. The airport provides a convenient and

valuable transportation link for the local communities by

allowing businesses and individuals to use general aviation

instead of dealing with the airline hub system. The airport

has a suitable fuel system that is available for use 24/7 and

is installed with a credit card reader. The Fillmore County

Airport also has a courtesy car. More information available

at www.co.fillmore.mn.us/departments/airport/.

FORESTVILLE/MYSTERY CAVE STATE PARK

Take a naturalist led tour of Mystery Cave, the longest

cave in Minnesota, featuring stalactites, stalagmites and

underground pools. The State Park offers blue ribbon trout

fishing streams, camping, horseback riding trails, horse

camping facilities, cross-country skiing and snowmobile

trails. Discover more about Forestville & Mystery Cave at

1

THE TROUT

The Preston Parade Trout typically

rests along Hwy. 52 throughout the

warmer months. Several people

stop by to snag a selfie with “The

Trout” each year! Because let’s be

honest, how often do you see a

catch that big?

3

THE HISTORIC

CAMPUS

You don’t have to be a history

buff to admit that our historical

campus at the Trailhead is pretty

colorful. Take a selfie with the

caboose or the elevator and

you’ll have a unique historic photo

that makes it look like you’re back

in the 1800s, riding the rails!

2

THE MURAL

The Preston Area Arts Council

and community members

spent several hours creating

the beautiful mural that now

rests above the Preston City

Hall entrance. The colors are

amazing. You won’t find a mural

like it! The best part, it stands for

everything PRESTON!

4

THE TANK

Located just off of the bike trail

near the Preston Trailhead is the

famous Army tank. You don’t get

an opportunity to take a selfie

with an Army tank very often. But

in Veteran Friendly Preston, it’s a

must-see!

VETERAN FRIENDLY COMMUNITY

Friendly

Preston’s Veteran Friendly Community campaign began in 2018. Our

community also became a Purple Heart City in 2019. The Club – Bar

and Veterans Organization located in downtown Preston is home to

several Veteran organizations. You will also find many patriotic displays

and attractions around town including the WWII-era Army Tank at the

Preston Trailhead, the WWI Memorial at the entrance of the Fillmore

County Fairgrounds and 100’s of American Flags scattered throughout the

community during flag holidays. The State Veterans Cemetery is located

on the outskirts of Preston and the first Veterans were laid to rest there in

2015. Preston will soon become the only community in Minnesota to have

both a State Veterans Cemetery and a State Veterans Home. A 54-bed

skilled nursing facility is set to open mid-summer that will become Southeast

Minnesota’s first State Veterans Home.
