the Chardonnay grape variety in
California.
Through the Vinexpo Academy,
Vinexpo Asia will provide a highlevel
I EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW I
Vinexpo Asia 2023:
a major strategic event
For Vinexpo Asia’s first trade show back in person after four years,
Rodolphe Lameyse, CEO of Vinexposium, shares what visitors and
exhibitors can expect from this year’s event
From the 23 rd to the 25 th of May, Vinexposium is bringing Vinexpo
Asia to Singapore, in the unique setting of the Marina Bay Sands
Expo & Convention Centre. The largest B2B event in the industry
is set to bring together professionals in wine and spirits for three
days of business in the Asia-Pacific region.
After a 4-year absence, what can we
expect from VinExpo Asia 2023?
Vinexpo Asia 2023 is an event where
people will be able to reunite. It’s an
amazing opportunity to see each other
and get acquainted again! After 4 years
marked by Covid-19 and the absence
of any major events in the Asia-Pacific
region, Vinexpo Asia is happening at a
pivotal time for resuming international
trade.
With over 20 years in the region, the first
Vinexpo Asia was held in Hong Kong
in 1998, and it has become a popular,
trustworthy and legitimate event for
the whole wine and spirits industry. It
is now strategic and vital for all global
stakeholders, bringing together buyers,
importers and sommeliers from the
growth markets across Asia.
Why was Singapore a strategic
location for Vinexpo Asia this year?
It quickly became an obvious choice
because Singapore is now one of
the gateways into Asia. Its strategic
location makes it a hub of regional and
global trade and its business model
revolves, among other things, around
a very open-minded approach to
international trade.
Has this decision been understood
and accepted?
Our desire to be part of this movement
and to benefit from this dynamic sales
environment is fully understood by our
customers. Singapore was the best
opportunity we could offer them in
2023, at a key time for returning to Asia.
Can you tell us more about the
exhibitors of Vinexpo Asia 2023?
Vinexpo Asia will bring together
nearly 1,000 exhibitors and 35
different countries will be represented.
France will be attending in numbers
with all of its wine regions present, and
VINEXPO
ASIA WILL
PROVIDE THE
OPPORTUNITY
TO DISCOVER
NEW WINES AND
SPIRITS AND
MEET PRODUCERS
AIMING TO
ESTABLISH A
FOOTHOLD OR
DEVELOP THEIR
PRESENCE IN
SINGAPORE AND
ACROSS ASIA
we will also welcome many different
international pavilions including
Argentina, Australia, Chile, the United
States and Italy. Spain, China, Portugal,
Germany, Austria, South Africa,
Switzerland, Japan, Aruba, Ireland,
New Zealand, the United Kingdom,
Israel, Canada, South Korea, Romania,
Thailand and Finland will also be
represented. Vinexpo Asia will provide
the opportunity to discover new wines
and spirits and meet producers aiming
to establish a foothold or develop their
presence in Singapore and across Asia.
How many visitors are you expecting?
8,000 visitors are due to attend Vinexpo
Asia 2023 from the 23rd to the 25th of
May, primarily from China, South Korea,
Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand,
Vietnam and Singapore.
These visitors are local decisionmakers,
executives and managers
of the largest import companies,
wholesalers, hoteliers/restaurateurs,
wine merchants and e-tailers. The vast
majority of them are directly involved
in selecting and purchasing wines
and spirits. Vinexpo Asia is therefore
a unique opportunity to establish and
maintain robust relationships in a major
region for business.
What will be some of the highlights of
this year’s Vinexpo Asia?
Vinexpo Asia will provide one of
the most varied and prestigious
programmes in the world as part of
Vinexpo Academy. This will include
masterclasses, of course, and the
Major Tasting by the Union des Grands
Crus de Bordeaux (UGCB) along with
conferences hosted by prominent
international experts.
Other programme highlights include
the Battle of the Sommeliers and
the Vinexpo Challenge, organised
in conjunction with the International
Association of Sommeliers (ASI).
We have very high ambitions for this
Vinexpo Asia. The entire Vinexposium
team and myself are delighted to be
I TRADE TALK I
Masters of Wine act as guiding
lights for the industry
Richard Hemming
MW and Head of Wine, Asia,
for 67 Pall Mall Singapore
Ahead of this year’s show, we spoke with MW Richard Hemming,
Head of Wine, Asia for 67 Pall Mall Singapore, about the trends in the
industry today and the importance of the MW qualification.
Can you tell us about the importance of
the Master of Wine (MW) qualification
for the industry today?
Collectively, Masters of Wine strive
to represent the ultimate authority in
wine. We work in every sector of the
industry, from traditional wine producers
to cutting-edge tech start-ups – and
of course Members’ Clubs such as 67
Pall Mall. The qualification requires
candidates to study all aspects of the
wine industry to develop the most
comprehensive understanding of the
wine world. Every MW also abides by a
commitment to uphold certain standards
and values, so that we can act as guiding
lights for the industry.
What are the major trends in wine right
now in your opinion?
The global appetite for Burgundy
shows no sign of slowing, despite everincreasing
prices. At a more mainstream
level, the rosé and sparkling wine
categories are probably the most active
in terms of exploring new potential.
Minimal-intervention wine continues
to capture the imagination of many
consumers, not only to attract new
drinkers to wine, but also to challenge
the traditional wine industry.
How important do you think it is to have
international face-to-face meetings like
Vinexpo Asia for the industry?
At its heart, wine is a social drink. Even
though technology allows us to connect
effectively over long distances, there is
no substitute for face-to-face contact,
and Vinexpo facilitates this brilliantly. It
will also allow wine professionals from
around the world to witness how vibrant
and dynamic Singapore is for wine
Different spirits represent different
nations, cultures and history
The Daily Vinexpo Asia sat
down with Certified Spirits
Educator (CSE) Eddie Nara for
some exclusive insights on the
latest spirits trends, ahead of his
talk at Vinexpo Asia next
Wednesday.
What are some of the main trends in
Irish whiskey right now?
The use of different types of casks for
maturation, e.g. Carcavelos, Portuguese
oak, Japanese shochu, and of course
Irish stout etc. Pot still whiskey remains
a unique product to Ireland. Peated
whisky is not unique to Scotland, and
MASTERCLASS
Wednesday, 24 May 2023
Ireland also produces some of the best
peated whiskeys.
How popular is Irish whiskey on the
Asian market compared to other
whiskies?
The general price point of Irish whiskey
remains very attractive compared to
Scotch and Japanese whiskies. Asians
generally love to try new things, and
with certain Irish whiskey brands being
innovative in the use of different new
casks, people will not get bored with
the same characteristics. Bartenders
also love to add Irish whiskeys to their
cocktail creations.
Eddie Nara will be giving a Masterclass:
The Irish Whiskey Renaissance
Room 1 – Masterclasses
4:30pm - 5:30pm
Why is it important for players in the
wine and spirits industry to meet in
person at events like Vinexpo Asia?
In addition to sharing the actual wines
and spirits, it is also about sharing
care and passion, handshakes, hugs;
this strengthens friendships, bonds
and cooperation. Discussions over a
glass of wine or whisky make meetings
and discussions more effective and
successful.
What is the most important thing to
keep in mind when educating people
in the appreciation of spirits?
Although certain spirits are more
popular than others, we should have an
open mind in trying the often neglected,
lesser known ones too. I believe that
different spirits represent different
nations, cultures and history, and
that these should be understood and
respected. It’s also important to spend
more time nosing the spirits (like most
master blenders do)
I TRADE TALK I
“We are in the industry of people”
The Daily Vinexpo Asia spoke with Chuan Ann Tan, Semi-Finalist of the
ASI Best Sommelier of the World 2023, in an exclusive interview
Chuan Ann Tan, who holds an
ASI Diploma Gold, is a Certified
Sommelier and a Certified
Sake Sommelier. He shared
his thoughts on wine trends in
Singapore and around the world.
What are some of the main wine trends
in Singapore right now?
I think low-alcohol and low-intervention
wines are what the market is looking for
right now. Something lighter and more
quaffable for Singapore’s warm weather.
On the other hand, the premium section
of fine Burgundy wines are getting
harder to come by on the market. Due to
the limited allocation, they just sold out
extremely fast.
How do these trends differ from the
industry on a global scale?
I think from a global perspective, alcoholfree
wines and low-alcohol wines are
trending. I am noticing that there are
more and more alcohol-free wine brands
on the global market.
For Burgundy wines, I believe the
situation is the same everywhere right
now.
What knowledge or skills can give a
sommelier an extra competitive edge?
Being eager to learn about all kinds of
beverages if possible. This can be sake,
whisky, rum etc. This will give you added
value for the extra knowledge you are
comfortable with.
I think another important component now
is non-alcoholic beverage knowledge.
There is an increase in clients looking
for non-alcoholic beverage pairings. For
example, crafted kombucha, tea, filter
coffee, amazake etc. Being creative and
matching the concept of the chef/dish’s
philosophy is also a key point.
Why is it important for players in the
wine industry to meet in person at
events like Vinexpo Asia?
It is definitely important. We are in the
industry of people; I believe meeting
in person is more efficient and will
keep relationships stronger. The wine
industry is a relatively small community,
(…) BUILDING
STRONG
CONNECTIONS IS
VERY IMPORTANT.
VINEXPO ASIA
PROVIDES A
GREAT PLATFORM
TO GATHER
EVERYONE
TOGETHER.
so building strong connections is very
important. Vinexpo Asia provides a great
platform to gather everyone together.
What traditions in the wine industry do
you think it’s important to preserve?
This will be a big topic, I think most of
the wine production countries have their
own traditions to preserve. This can
be cultural or part of the wine making
traditions themselves.
In Vienna, a Heuriger is a wine tavern
where you can drink the newest wine
from the current vintage. This Viennese
tradition is definitely worth a visit. It is a
great experience of the culture, cuisine
and wine as a whole.
In Beaujolais in France, the Beaujolais
Nouveau, which is released on the third
Thursday of November every year, all
started with a clever marketing idea
to sell their young wines. Now the
Beaujolais Nouveau is a 5-day festival
with wine tastings, dinners, concerts etc.
In Rioja in Spain, Rioja Cosecha is a
traditional style of Tempranillo made
with carbonic maceration. There are a
few wineries making this historic version
of Rioja, and I think it is great to keep the
traditional style alive
I MARKET TRENDS I
Asia’s growing taste
ALCOHOLIC
BEVERAGE
CONSUMPTION
TRENDS IN
KOREA
Over the past year, Korea has
experienced a surge in wine
consumption and a resurgence
of whiskey, with a younger
demographic driving the trend. Join
Professor Junghoon Moon of Seoul
National University for this exclusive
session to explore how the market
for these beverages is evolving in
Korea and how they are competing
with traditional Korean alcoholic
beverages such as beer, soju, and
makgeolli.
As a taste for wine increases in Asia as a whole, premiumisation is
favouring imported brands while ecommerce and social networks
can play a significant role in which foreign brands gain reach.
It is no coincidence that Singapore was
chosen as the site for Vinexpo Asia
2023. Not only is it a strategic spot
for trade fuelled by a number of free
trade agreements, but research from
the IWSR for Vinexposium forecasts
a compound annual growth rate of
3.8% between 2021 and 2026 for the
beverage alcohol industry in Singapore.
Singapore is also Asia’s most buoyant
region for the premium market at 42%
of sales. This is fueled in part by its
expansive bar and restaurant scene.
China has famously become a giant in
the wine industry, showing increased
interest in the last few decades and
claiming the top spot in the world
for red wine consumption for the last
ten years. This has been fuelled by
the growth of the middle classes and
consumer demand, and with 40% of
China’s wine being imported according
to Horizons, it represents an incredible
opportunity for growth for wine makers
and sellers. The importance of wine for
society as a whole can be illustrated by
the Universal Wine Museum set to open
in Beijing in May 2024.
E-commerce is playing an important
role in the sale of wine in China, in
combination with platforms such
as TikTok and other Chinese social
networks.
In Japan, fine wines continue to have a
strong following. More everyday drinking
wines are also growing in popularity,
especially among younger consumers.
The Japanese are also developing a
new cocktail culture and an appetite for
ready-to-drink beverages (RTDs) which
are growing on a global scale as well.
In South Korea, beer and spirits like
soju are still the most popular alcoholic
beverages. Wine consumption is
showing strong growth nevertheless,
especially among women and younger
generations who are turning to wine as
a good value for money option. South
Korea’s wine imports are showing
outstanding growth, increasing by 69%
in value in 2021 according to IWSR-
Vinexposium research.
In Asia, the market for wines and spirits
is expanding with increased demand
for high-quality imported products.
While most Asian brands in the wine
and spirits industry still sell the majority
of their volumes domestically, some
are looking to expand internationally in
the face of increasing competition from
international brands, especially in the
case of premiumisation.
Tommy Keeling, Research Director at
IWSR, explained this phenomenon,
“As Asian populations grow richer,
consumers are trading up to imported
drinks brands and the position of
local champions suddenly looks less
secure, so many are looking to diversify
abroad”
The session will also dive into the
concept of food pairing, which is
gaining popularity in Korean culture.
Discover what kinds of food pairings
are emerging with wine and whiskey
and how they are influencing the
market.
Don’t miss this opportunity to gain
valuable insights into the Korean
wine and whiskey market. This
conference session will take place
in Room 3 on Tuesday, 23 May 2023,
when its expert speakers will share
their insights on the opportunities
and threats in this market. Be sure to
mark your calendars
I GLOBAL OVERVIEW I
A new label for Moulin du
Château La Lagune
The renowned wine estate is
showcasing the new visual identity
of its Moulin du Château La Lagune
at Vinexpo Asia 2023. The new
label celebrates a new chapter in
the estate’s history, honoring their
years of commitment to regenerative
viticulture and excellence.
Owner and oenologist Caroline Frey
strongly believes that respecting the
vineyard and all of its surrounding
ecosystems is the way to make
greater wines. All of Château La
Lagune’s vineyards are certified
Organic and Biodynamic.
Caroline asked her sister, Delphine,
to completely rethink the identity of
Moulin du Château La Lagune for the
label. She wanted to communicate
her strong relationship to nature,
with a softer and more feminine
tone. The new label expresses
Delphine’s imagination as well as
Caroline’s story and convictions. It is
a metaphor for the alchemy between
animal, vegetable and mineral that
gives soul and depth to Moulin du
Château La Lagune, vintage after
vintage. The monochrome blue is
meant to represent imagination
and union, replacing the classic
black label. The hand-drawn
illustration showcases the
diversity of Château La Lagune’s
ecosystem and the winery’s
commitment to biodiversity.
Paul Mas story. These grapes thrive in the
Languedoc region’s terroir and produce
fruity, easy-to-drink, pleasant wines that
express their full potential.
For Jean-Claude Mas, this range is linked
to his childhood when he dreamed
of becoming a race car driver before
becoming a winemaker, and to his longstanding
love of vintage cars.
Abelé 1757
A historic Champagne
House blending tradition
and innovation at Vinexpo
Asia 2023
Abelé Champagne, the fifth oldest Champagne House,
will be present at this year’s Vinexpo Asia in Singapore.
When Nicolas Feuillatte Group bought the Maison Abelé in 2019, it
was a priority for the company to preserve and highlight the unique
values of the historic Champagne house. La Maison Abelé became
Abelé 1757, in reference to the year the winery was founded. Along
with the new name, the brand also got a new logo inspired by the
architecture of its historic cellars. When Etienne Eteneau took over
the reins in 2021 as cellar master, he subscribed to this vision for a
new chapter.
Award-winning winery Journey’s End and
new wine brand Interpunkt are launching a
new range of W.O. Western Cape Sauvignon
Blanc and Shiraz wines available exclusively
at Checkers.
What sets this brand apart is its forwardthinking
packaging made from 100%
recyclable paperboard–the first in South
Africa.
The packaging is not only sustainable, but
also five times lighter than a normal glass
bottle, helping lower its carbon footprint.
The brand aims to make wine more accessible
and inclusive by removing the intimidating
language often used on labels. The goal is to
allow consumers to enjoy wine without taking
themselves too seriously
Tenuta San Vincenti wines
at Vinexpo Asia 2023
Abelé 1757 has a surprising history rooted in innovation. Antoine de
Muller, Henri Abelé’s grandfather and Cellar Master of Maison Veuve
Clicquot-Ponsardin, invented the riddling table, which revolutionised
the method of making champagne. When in 1880
Henri Abelé wanted to expand the Champagne
house he had inherited, he moved it to a new
address in the heart of Reims. This concealed
a winemaking treasure: two kilometres of chalk
cellars, dug by hand in the raw rock and limestone.
These dark underground cellars buried 20 metres
deep were the ideal environment for conserving
and ageing bottles, providing darkness, constant
temperature and stable humidity levels. This
centuries-old laboratory of innovation became
the heart of Abelé’s creation, in a unique
landscape now classified as a UNESCO World
Heritage Site.
The Tenuta San Vincenti winery is located
in the Chianti Classico area in Tuscany, near
the historical hamlet of San Vincenti, in the
Stignano locality.
The estate covers over 60 hectares and
has a breathtaking view of Monte Amiata
and the Crete Senesi hills in one of the
most renowned winemaking locations in
the world. The vineyards themselves are
on a hilly ridge oriented north to south at
an altitude ranging from 350 to 550 metres
above sea level, with south-eastern and
south-western exposure. San Vincenti will
have wines available for tasting at booth
K001 in the Italian area at Vinexpo Asia
2023
Over two and a half centuries after its
creation, Abelé 1757 is reinventing
itself. While reaffirming its history and
connection with Reims, it continues to
look to the future and put innovation at
the heart of its winemaking. Abelé 1757
makes heritage champagnes including
their signature Abelé 1757 brut, the more
delicate and fruity Abelé 1757 brut rosé
and their 100% Chardonnay blanc de
blancs for a fresh, aromatic experience.
