HORDES OF roving youths
continue to smash their way
into business across the city –
and it is all being captured on
CCTV security cameras.
At 6am on Saturday morning,
a Barrington Shopping Centre
worker was left unnerved after
witnessing a group trying to
smash into The Warehouse
with what looked like golf clubs
and hammers.
The witness, who did not
want to be named, was working
near The Warehouse when he
saw two cars pull into the car
park at about 6am.
“It looked like early
customers, which is nothing
unusual . . . they parked just
out the front of The Warehouse
then backed up, which sort of
made us stop and look and go
‘that’s really strange at this hour
to have two cars parked parallel
backed up’,” he said.
THE HIGH school teacher
who allegedly shared a sexually
explicit video of himself online
The Christchurch school is
investigating the circumstances
surrounding the publication
and sharing of the video last
month, which reportedly
showed the teacher engaged in
a sex act.
The principal said the school
is currently on leave and “we
THE CITY’S restaurants will
be trying a new way to attract
customers over winter – and
there are no tables or chairs.
The new food ordering service
Tiny Door will launch in the
central city in July.
The concept is like a click and
collect restaurant, except different
restaurants will share the
kitchen on a rostered basis, and
all collections are at the same
place through the same small
front door in the wall.
The idea is a new approach
in the fight by restaurants to
combat fading interest in dining
out.
Tiny Door is co-founded by
Ally and Fabian Kulpe, and
Chris and Tori Spragg. Ally said
the quirky idea offered a new,
fun way for restaurants to engage
with customers.
“Restaurants can book a slot
within our Tiny Door facility,
whether it be breakfast, lunch or
dinner, and then they come in
and provide their food offering.
“It’s a really cool way to give
the hospitality producers of
Christchurch an opportunity,
and give people in Christchurch
a cool experience with different
food offerings,” she said.
Ally said people would be able
to order online or direct from the
site, which would be a kitchen
hidden behind a tiny door.
“It’s about having quality food
in the grab-and-go setting,” she
said.
There would be three different
food partners at the site every
day for breakfast, lunch and
dinner, and a chef inside would
hand diners the meals through
the tiny door.
Food partners for the first Tiny
Door include Earl, Bootleg Burger,
Bar Yoku and Smokey T’s.
“I love that it gives a lot of the
we meet all our responsibilities.”
Parents and students at the
school have been freely discussing
the incident after the video
was circulated. It had allegedly
been circulating for some time.
A police spokesperson said
they are aware of concerns and
associated rumours about the
smaller guys a chance to get their
creative juices flowing. Through
this model, we are going to
explore some different stuff that
isn’t on our everyday menus,”
said Smokey T’s owner Tristin
Anderson.
Anderson believes Tiny Door
is going to be a gamechanger for
smaller businesses starting out,
as it eliminates high overheads.
“It introduces you to the latest
technology available. To be able
video, but police are not investigating.
The Star has chosen not to
identify the school.
“Our commitment (is)
to a fair process and being
transparent with our school
and community,” the principal
said.
Tiny idea could be next
big thing for restaurants
VENTURE: Tiny Door co-founders Fabian Kulpe, Chris Spragg and Ally Kulpe. Inset – the
Tiny Door in progress.
to use that without having to
put your hands in your pockets
yourself is incredible, it takes all
that pressure off,” said Anderson.
“We can concentrate on what
we’re good at – that’s cooking –
and Tiny Door takes care of the
rest.”
Ally said if the Tiny Door
idea was successful in the city it
would be taken to the rest of
the country.
Chlorination row: Petition launched
SENIOR CITY councillor
Sam MacDonald wants the
Government to intervene in
the chlorination row which has
blown up this week.
National water regulator
Taumata Arowai has told the
city council it will decline its first
application for a chlorine exemption.
This has prompted fears
chlorine will become permanent
in the city’s water supply.
MacDonald yesterday
launched
a petition calling
on Local Government
Minister
Kieran McAnulty
to rein in Taumata
Sam
MacDonald
Arowai, saying
the rules were not
pragmatic enough
for Christchurch.
“The rules are obviously way
out of whack with where the city
is,” he said.
But McAnulty ruled out getting
involved, saying it was a
matter for the city council and
Taumata Arowai.
MacDonald’s move follows
Mayor Phil Mauger’s strong
words on Tuesday over the issue.
He believed Christchurch would
never be free of chlorine.
“My (council) colleagues and I
are outraged to learn of this decision
and know many Christchurch
residents will feel the same,”
Phil
Mauger
he said.
“While we’re
being forced to
chlorinate our
water supply, we
will continue to
fight and advocate
for the people
of Christchurch.
“We’ve heard
that if we want to
gain exemptions for any of our
water supply zones, we’ll need to
go over and above the standards
set out by the Government. To
achieve this, we’d have to make
He said the city council agreed
with Taumata Arowai being
The Taumata Arowai ruling
now required to be chlorinated,
Kāinga Ora accused of keeping
• By Tony Simons
SOCIAL HOUSING agency
Kāinga Ora has been accused of
being secretive over a housing
development it is building.
Halswell residents have
signed a 157-signature petition,
demanding work stop on a
17-dwelling social housing
development at Copper Ridge on
Halswell Junction Rd.
The complex (mainly twostoreys)
is now partly completed
after two companies obtained resource
consents last year, started
building, then sold the project to
Kāinga Ora six weeks ago.
Residents told the Waipuna
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board the first they
learned about it was when flyers
were delivered to nearby homes
last month.
The city council confirmed it
knew Kāinga Ora had an interest
in the development back when
the consent applications were
first lodged, but that makes no
difference.
“The council approves developments
based on the rules in
the District Plan. The developer
or owner of units is not something
we consider in a resource
consent process,” said planning
and consents head John Higgins.
The situation is similar to
another controversy early
CONTROVERSIAL: Residents are demanding work stop on this 17-dwelling social
housing development at Copper Ridge on Halswell Junction Rd.
this month when former New
Zealand First MP Shane Jones
accused Kāinga Ora of sneaking
20 new medium-density
homes “looking like battery-cage
enclosures” into Kerikeri, Bay of
Islands, “like a thief under the
cover of night”.
Hundreds of Kerikeri residents
turned out at a public meeting,
protesting the development.
Kāinga Ora did not attend and
local media reported it had
instructed the private developer
not to attend either.
Copper Ridge resident Jules
Atkinson told the community
board: “This is now happening
everywhere in New Zealand. It
is not transparent or honest but,
if nothing is done, it is going to
continue.
“It has all been really sneaky
and we are perhaps not going to
stop this complex, but we can
help other neighbourhoods.”
Kāinga Ora promises on its
website to inform neighbours
and stakeholders at every stage
of a new development but the
Copper Ridge development is not
on its website, despite the Urban
Development Act requiring it to
publish details.
Community board member
Henk Buunk described it as a
much wider issue than just one
development.
“If we can talk to Kāinga
Ora we might
be able to
persuade them
to change their
tactics because
they appear
to be fairly
underhand,” he
said.
Kāinga Ora
said plans for
Henk
Buunk
the Halswell complex started
early last year but city council
documents show talks started as
early as August 2021.
The first consent was
granted to a private company
eight months ago, followed soon
after by a second consent to a
related company. Foundations
were already laid when Kāinga
Ora took formal ownership on
April 5.
Atkinson told the board most
of the new housing complex will
be accessed off a cul-de-sac and
will create major parking, access
and traffic safety problems that
neither Kāinga Ora nor the city
council have properly addressed.
“There is limited public
will almost certainly block
emergency vehicles and rubbish
trucks.”
“Our MP, Megan Woods, is
telling us we have to live with it.
It’s the same message we seem to
be getting from our councillor,
Andrei Moore,”
another resident
said.
Woods denies
she told residents
they would have to
Megan
live with it.
“I told them
Kāinga Ora needs
Woods
to build more houses and that
is something I, as minister of
housing, support,” she said.
“It’s my understanding the
earliest Kāinga Ora could start a
conversation with residents was
after the commercial deal was
signed but I told them, as their
local MP, I would help to make
sure their concerns about the late
notification were heard.”
Moore said he learned about
the development at the same
time as the residents.
“When I heard about
it, I immediately wrote to
Kāinga Ora on behalf of the
residents. I’m very mindful of
the need for effective lines of
communication,” he said.
The community board agreed
to contact Kāinga Ora with
questions. Board chair
Helen Broughton said
she will ask for a meeting
with city council planners
to discuss issues raised
around the consenting
process.
Kāinga Ora regional
director for Canterbury
Liz Krause said it can take
Kainga Ora some time to get to
a point where it is ready to sign a
contract with a developer.
extensive discussions over a
number of months to ensure
“At any given time, we
may be having multiple
discussions but, for
commercial reasons, we
are unable to provide
details of partnership
opportunities we are
currently exploring,” she
said.
Kāinga Ora expects the
Halswell homes to be completed
by May next year.
“Kāinga Ora customers will
move in after that,” said Krause.
Name suppression
battle continues
• By Anna Leask
NAME suppression will
continue – for now – for two
men convicted of rape after
a trial centred around the
drugging and sexual assaults
of more than 20 women at a
Christchurch bar.
In April, following a lengthy
trial, Judge Paul Mabey found
the men guilty of a litany of
offending including rape,
sexual violation, stupefying
and making intimate visual
recordings.
The men – aged 40 and 38
– will be sentenced across two
days in late August for the offending
against more than 20
women – described in court as
“predatory”.
The men were granted ongoing
suppression until the end of
their trial.
That suppression was to protect
fair trial rights for a second
trial where they were facing
further similar charges.
When the charges in the second
proceeding were resolved –
some not pursued by the Crown
and an indecent assault charge
admitted by one of the men –
Judge Mabey said there was no
further basis for keeping their
names secret.
Justice Jonathan Eaton heard
the appeals on Tuesday in the
High Court at Christchurch.
The 38-year-old claimed
family members would suffer
“extreme hardship” if his name
was published.
Justice Eaton has allowed parties
to submit further information
to the court around parts of
the appeals.
He has given them until the
end of Monday.
He will deliver his decision on
suppression for both men by the
end of next week.
The sentencing for the men
has been moved to August.
DOGS ARE threatening – and
in some cases killing – native
and migratory birds on Avon-
Heathcote Estuary.
Conservationists want dogs
banned from the estuary, a
crucial stop-off point for the bartailed
godwit on its migration to
Alaska.
It is also a popular dog walking
spot.
The estuary is home to around
33,000 birds at this time of year,
including oystercatchers, gulls
and little penguins.
Estuary Trust
manager Tanya
Jenkins said dog
owners were
ignoring estuary
rules and letting
their pets run
over the mudflats,
a crucial feeding
spot for birds.
She said some
dogs killed birds, but disturbing
them on the mudflats could also
be fatal.
Jenkins said birds could only
feed on the mudflats at low tide,
so they only had a short window
of a few hours to eat enough to
last the day.
“If they are disturbed by dogs
it can take them up to 45 minutes
before they will settle again
and continue eating. By then,
often the tide is coming in again
so they’ve missed out on dinner.
“If that happens a few days in a
row they get very hungry. If that
happens during their migration,
like for the godwits who leave for
Alaska in March and need to fly
12,000 kilometres, if they don’t
have enough to eat they won’t
make it.”
Estuary Trust data showed the
number of bar-tailed godwits
had massively declined at the estuary.
Last November there were
about 1200 godwits, but that was
only half the number recorded
in 2013.
The trust wanted dogs banned
from the entire estuary.
Jenkins said the big problem
with many areas was the limits
on dogs were simply that they
be under effective control, and
that was not protecting the birds
adequately.
Forest and Bird Canterbury
manager Nicky Snoyink
agreed estuary rules were not
being enforced.
“Dog are a significant threat
particularly when they are running
free. The lack of enforcement
of the bylaw where dogs are
supposed to be leashed, that’s a
real problem for the ecological
area and the species that live
there.”
The city council had received
26 complaints since July last year
about dogs in prohibited areas at
the estuary. But it said none were
taken further, because there was
not enough evidence to identify
dogs or dog owners from photos
taken from a distance.
Checkers Dog Walking owner
Julia Knoef has exercised her
dogs at the estuary a number of
times. She said it was a popular
spot for walkers, and dog control
FORMER BLACK Caps star Nathan
Astle is back in business after buying one
of Canterbury’s longest running sports
stores.
Astle and his wife Kelly have taken
over Anderson & Hill Sports Power
at Barrington mall after selling their
childcare business in Hillmorton late last
year.
Anderson and Hill has been a wellknown
sports gear retailer in Christchurch
for about 75 years. Its former owner Mark
Carter was involved with the store for
nearly 50 years.
Astle, 51, said he was playing golf when
he heard Carter was planning to retire and
thought the business would be a challenge
he and Kelly could take on.
Carter retired last Thursday after
showing Astle the ropes.
Said Astle: “It’s a genuine serviceoriented
sports store, probably one of the
last left in Christchurch, and we don’t plan
on making any immediate changes.
“We have good relationships with
clubs and schools in
Christchurch and that
is something I will look
to extend.”
Astle is regarded as
one of New Zealand
best-ever batsmen. He
retired in 2007, just six
weeks before the start
of what would have
been his fourth World
Cup.
The couple ran Kiwi Kids Preschool for
about 12 years until it was sold a couple of
weeks ago.
“I’m pretty comfortable selling cricket
gear and I’m fast learning the rest of it,” he
said.
Advances in fight
against myrtle rust
NEW RESEARCH using remote
sensing technology could help in
the fight against myrtle rust.
Myrtle rust was first detected
in New Zealand in 2017 and in
Christchurch in 2021.
Over time infected trees can
die because they cannot regenerate.
Pōhutakawa, mānuka, rātā,
eucalyptus and feijoas are at risk.
Crown Research Institute
Scion scientists have successfully
detected myrtle rust in nursery
plants days before the plants
show signs of infection.
Early detection would let nurseries
start control treatment and
stop the disease in its tracks.
Principal scientist Mike Watt
said high precision equipment
was being used to detect myrtle
rust infection in leaves of rose apple
deliberately inoculated with
the myrtle rust pathogen.
The technology senses differences
in leaf temperature and
light wave lengths in infected
apple trees.
“The canopy temperature we
found in infected plants was
actually lower because the pathogen
punches the leaves, which
means the leaves lose more water,
they transpire more, which cools
the leaves down.
“And the other feature was
that the canopy temperature was
more variable, in spots on the
leaf, so it wasn’t uniform across
the leaf compared to the control
plants which weren’t inoculated.
“So just using those two variables,
we were able to classify all
of the plants with 100 per cent
certainty before we could actually
see the disease on the plant.”
It could be a couple of years
before the technology was available
for commercial nurseries
because testing was now needed
on species like eucalyptus and
pōhutakawa, he said.
Myrtle rust was most likely to
be seen during warm, wet conditions.
The disease causes bright
yellow-orange powdery pustules
on young leaves, shoots, fruits
and flowers in the myrtle family,
causing deformation of the
leaves, and twig dieback.
Repeated severe infection can
cause decline or death of large
trees.
‘Forgotten man’ to
be remembered
TŪRANGA’S upcoming
Heritage Highlights delves
into the history of Dr William
Donald, the forgotten man of
Lyttelton.
Donald (1815-84) was a doctor,
surgeon, dentist, immigration
officer, returning officer, resident
magistrate, coroner, registrar
of births, marriages and deaths
and a Justice of the Peace.
He was an administrator par
excellence and prominent in
early Lyttelton society, yet he
seems to be often overlooked.
City council head of libraries
and information Carolyn Robertson
said an event at Tūranga
will offer the chance to explore
the history of this man and the
influence he has had on the development
of early Lyttelton.
“We’re excited to be holding
a session later in May in our
Auaha Hīhī / Spark Place to
allow the chance to look into the
many lives of Dr Donald.”
Donald was elected chair of
the first Lyttelton Municipal
Council in 1862 and represented
Lyttelton on the Canterbury
Provincial Council from
1855–1857.
“Alongside this, he was also a
prominent community member
in a non-official governmental
capacity,” said Robertson.
Donald was chairman then
committee member of the
Lyttelton Colonists’ Society, cofounder
and later district grand
master of the Lodge of Unamity,
treasurer of the Oddfellows
Lodge, trustee of the Lyttelton
Savings Bank, Anglican Church
trustee and member of the Canterbury
College Council.
He was appointed medical officer
for Port Cooper – now Port
Lyttelton – to provide medical
services to those preparing for
the arrival of the first Canterbury
Association ships.
After the ships arrived in
late 1850, Donald was part of
the round of social gatherings
attempting to replicate life
‘back home’.
Following Donald’s death in
1884, his life was celebrated by a
full Masonic funeral.
Family history librarian Annette
Williams said she first
came across Donald while working
at the Lyttelton Library.
“Once I found him, I kept tripping
over him constantly when I
researched Lyttelton’s history.
“It became a standing joke
with my colleagues that whenever
we looked at Lyttelton’s
19th century history, Dr Donald
was sure to be involved.”
Williams said she wonders
why Donald is a forgotten man.
“There is a small street in
Lyttelton named after him, and
a fish specimen held in the Museum
of New Zealand Te Papa
Tongarewa’s collection that was
presented by Dr Donald.
“Other than that, there is
very little else, and it is a bit of a
mystery as to why his history is
not more widespread.”
Uber driver indecently assaults teen
• By Emily Moorhouse
AN UBER driver who
inappropriately touched and
took intimate photos of his
intoxicated teenage passenger
while she was sleeping has been
accused of trying to justify his
behaviour.
Teck Wong, 47, picked up his
18-year-old victim from outside
a Christchurch bar and then
“took advantage” of her when
she fell asleep in his car.
Wong was sentenced to 10
months of home detention with
special conditions when he
appeared in the district court on
one charge of indecent assault
and one of making an intimate
visual recording.
According to the summary of
facts, in August last year Wong
picked up the teen in the early
hours of the morning.
He drove her to where she was
staying but the victim asked if
she could wait in his car until
her friends arrived, which Wong
agreed to.
But when the victim fell asleep,
her skirt slipped up slightly, the
court heard.
Wong reached over to brush
her underwear to the side,
making contact with her private
parts. He then took three photos
of her genitals on his phone.
When Wong was later spoken
to by police, he said he had
HARM: An Uber driver ‘took advantage’ of an intoxicated teenage passenger after she fell
asleep, taking photos of her genitals on his phone.
PHOTO: GETTY
deleted the photos and his phone
was seized.
In court, Judge Tony Couch
said the offending was a “gross
breach of trust” and Wong
could not have believed she was
consenting as she was asleep.
“You saw this as an
opportunity for personal
gratification and you took it.
As a mature adult you should
have known this was totally
unacceptable.”
Judge Couch said passengers
of taxis or similar vehicles are
entitled to feel “entirely safe”
from interference or attack from
drivers, something Wong had
not demonstrated.
“The victim remains seriously
affected by what you’ve done
which is likely to continue into
the future. You are responsible
for that.”
Wong’s lawyer Chris Nolan
said his client had shown
genuine remorse, was willing to
engage in treatment to address
his behaviour and presented a
low risk of reoffending.
But the judge rejected Wong’s
remorse, stating reports provided
to the court suggested he was
repeatedly trying to “justify or
rationalise” his offending.
“I see little or no recognition of
the harm you have caused to this
victim. I do not accept you are
genuinely remorseful,” he told
Wong.
Nolan said Wong acknowledged
the victim was vulnerable
as she was intoxicated and asleep
and should have been safe in his
Uber. He said while Wong’s hand
brushed against the victim’s
genitals when he pulled her underwear
back, this wasn’t sexual
in nature.
Nolan said an emotional
harm payment of $1000 had
been paid to the victim following
a restorative justice meeting.
The court heard Wong had
since been prohibited from
holding a passenger endorsement
license, meaning he could no
longer work as an Uber driver.
COURT
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Drug dealer ordered to pay up
A MAJOR player in a
Christchurch synthetic cannabis
ring has failed in his legal bid
to stop the police commissioner
from recovering more than $2
million of his ill-gotten gains.
Sui Jun Zhou, a real estate
agent in his 30s, was jailed for 26
months in 2019 for his role in a
synthetic drug dealing venture
which operated out of the small
Sockburn Dairy and, at one
point, spanned the South Island.
Prosecutors said Zhou was the
“right-hand man” or lieutenant
of an operation masterminded
by Fei He who owned the dairy.
When police terminated
their lengthy investigation
in 2016, three years after the
trade in synthetic cannabis was
outlawed, they found 173kg of
the substance in the possession
of Zhou and others.
He pleaded guilty to one
charge of selling or supplying
non-approved psychoactive
substances and two charges
of possession or supply of
non-approved psychoactive
substances.
Police calculated he had
obtained $2,214,000 in unlawful
benefit and Justice Jan‐Marie
Doogue found the commissioner
of police was entitled to recover
that amount under the Criminal
Proceeds (Recovery) Act from
Zhou and his business, Levonz
Investment Ltd. Zhou’s appeal
against Doogue’s ruling was
heard by the Court of Appeal on
March 27, and the court released
its reasons for rejecting the
appeal in a judgment delivered
by Justice David Collins on May
2.
Zhou’s lawyers challenged
the final calculation of his illgotten
gains, arguing the price
per gram used did not take into
account wholesale customers and
that some of the profit derived
from the sale of a legal substance
in conjunction with the synthetic
cannabis.
This was rejected by the Court
of Appeal, which found the
FAILED BID: Sui Jun Zhou lost an appeal against his jail
sentence for his role in a synthetic drug dealing venture
which operated out of the Sockburn Dairy.
PHOTO: KURT BAYER
judge was entitled to accept the
calculations by the detective.
Collins said other arguments
were inconsistent with the fact
he pleaded guilty to hundreds of
synthetic cannabis sales.
The legal team also argued
the commissioner unreasonably
recovered twice from the benefit
received by Zhou and He, who
was subject to a $3.5 million
profit forfeiture order.
This argument was thrown out
by the Court of Appeal because
it found Zhou did not prove he
and He were jointly benefiting
from the offending. Zhou’s
third and final argument – that
Justice Doogue failed to properly
assess his claim he would suffer
undue hardship unless all his
real estate property was excluded
from the order – also did not
gain any traction with the Court
of Appeal. “Mr Zhou did not
raise any matters which went
beyond the hardship that most
people would suffer if they had
their property confiscated under
the Act,” ollins said. The Court
dismissed the appeal and found
the Commissioner of Police, as
the respondent, was entitled to
costs. – NZ Herald
COURT 19
UC lecturer loses bid to
prove sacking unjustified
• By Tracy Neal
A SENIOR LECTURER whose life was
“badly dislocated” by a string of events
since the Christchurch earthquakes has
lost her job – and the subsequent case she
brought against her former employer.
The Employment Relations Authority
said Canterbury University was justified
in sacking Dr Christina Stachurski after
it found she subcontracted some of her
lecturing responsibilities to another university
employee.
Stachurski said she was disappointed
with the process and outcome, including
the length of time to get a result.
She said the ERA stipulated a determination
was due within 90 days of the
hearing but it took 16 months.
ERA member Andrew Dallas said in the
decision the dismissal occurred within the
context of a complaint about “aggressive
and unreasonable behaviour” Stachurski
made in 2019 against a head of department
at the time. The university became
aware of the subcontracting during its
investigation.
Stachurski said she believed her insistence
her complaint should be addressed
had made her a target for retaliatory behaviour
and the staff members involved in
the investigation “worked together to find
a way to eject me from the university”.
She had been employed as a continuing,
part-time senior lecturer at the university’s
English department from March 2009
and was dismissed for serious misconduct
We’ve got your
Motoring
Covered!
in October 2020, which she argued was
unjustified.
In 2018, Stachurski reached an agreement
with her employer to take a sabbatical
spread across the entire academic
year so she could continue lecturing and
concentrate on writing a play about claimants’
interactions with the Earthquake
Commission.
The ERA noted Stachurski’s life had
been “badly dislocated” by the earthquakes
and then the grief caused by the
death of her partner in 2014.
She requested further sabbatical leave
covering part of 2019 but it was declined.
The play, EQ f@#%ing C, ran into difficulties
in early 2019 over its apparent
depiction of a central government politician.
It required a number of re-writes,
which were completed only weeks before
its scheduled premiere on March 30, 2019.
Stachurski’s sabbatical had ended and the
first semester of the new academic year
had started.
She entered into an arrangement with
another staff member for her to be paid to
give the first lecture in the English course
for semester one so Stachurski could
continue with the play, which was then
cancelled by the Court Theatre, the ERA
said.
The agreement was reaffirmed several
times to include further lectures, although
there was some dispute between the
employer and Stachurski about how many
lectures were given by the other staff
member. – Open Justice
cartilage of your joints as
well as in your skin, bones,
nails and ligaments. Taking
glucosamine in sufficient
amounts provides the body
with more building blocks
to help maintain and repair
all your joints, ligaments,
tendons, connective tissue,
bones, and nails as well as
supporting healthy skin, hair,
blood vessels and more. As we
age the body’s production of glucosamine
declines and this is a reason why
supplementation may be beneficial. Studies
have found in athletes’ glucosamine
may protect joint tissue by preventing
the breakdown of cartilage. One study
demonstrated that supplementation with
1500mg to 3000mg of glucosamine daily
for three months significantly decreased
cartilage breakdown in college soccer
players as well as professional rugby
players. A comprehensive review of
multiple studies on glucosamine sulphates
(GS) benefits for osteoarthritis was
published in a peer-review medical journal
“Therapeutic Advances in Musculoskeletal
Disease” in December 2020. The review
Thursday May 18 2023 The Star
found that a daily dosage of
1500mg of “GS” can positively
affect the cartilage structure,
reduce pain, and improve
joint function, and also
glucose metabolism in people
with osteoarthritis.
Glucosamine has many
other surprising health
benefits. Animal studies
show it can extend lifespan
by around 10%. Several large
human studies have shown
glucosamine supplementation
to significantly improve
cardiovascular health and
reduce mortality.
Glucosamine has been
shown to reduce age-related
inflammation now considered a leading
cause of aging and mortality. Glucosamine
has also been shown to protect your DNA
against damage, improve cellular health,
create more mitochondria and improve
energy levels.
Do You Know GLUCOSAMINE
Offers Far More Benefits
Than Just
Joint Health?
Glucosamine sulphate (GS) occurs naturally in the
body. It is used in the formation of bones, nails,
ligaments, tendons, connective tissue & cartilage
– the material in all moving joints that protects and
allows them to move freely. Stiff, painful & swollen
joints are a sign of insufficient or damaged cartilage
(osteoarthritis). As we age the body’s production
of (GS) may decline & this is likely the main reason
for developing joint problems. A comprehensive
review of studies on (GS) benefits for osteoarthritis
suggests that a daily dose of 1500mg (GS) can
positively affect the cartilage structure, reduce pain
& inflammation as well as improve joint function.
(GS) appears to have many other surprising health
benefits. Animal studies show it can extend lifespan
by around 10%. Several large human studies
have shown (GS) supplementation to significantly
improve cardiovascular health & reduce mortality.
Also, it has been shown to protect DNA against
damage, improve cellular health by creating more
mitochondria as well as improve energy levels.
Chance to reclaim DCL Shield
The DCL Shield could
change hands again
on Saturday and the
Southern League returns
after the Chatham Cup.
Jaime Cunningham
reports
RUGBY
High School Old Boys have a
chance to win the DCL Shield
back after they lost it to Marist
Albion less than a month ago.
HSOB will challenge
University for the shield on
Saturday after a hard-fought 19-
16 loss to Sumner in round 5.
University handed Marist their
first loss of the season to claim
the shield in a high-scoring
match last Saturday.
University
led 23-5 at halftime,
but a late
fight-back from
Marist brought
them within six
points before
University’s
fourth try sealed
Daniel
O’Brien
the win 37-24.
University
now sit at the
top of the Metro
premier ladder with 22 points,
the same number they finished
on last season.
After winning only seven
matches last year, University
head coach Daniel O’Brien said
they have rebuilt the team.
“We talk a lot more about
processes,” he said.
“Obviously winning the
competition is a goal, but we
haven’t actually talked about
that.”
“Having a high performance
culture and developing our
players is more important.”
Sydenham will aim to continue
their momentum when they host
New Brighton.
Sydenham come off a 50-
18 win over Belfast, while
New Brighton dominated
Christchurch 40-14.
Winless Christchurch face
third-placed Lincoln University
who are set to host their club
victory over Linwood.
Linwood will be looking for
their fourth win of the season
when they take on Burnside.
Burnside go into round 6 after
a narrow 29-26 win over Shirley.
Burwood Park to play Shirley.
Both Burside and Shirley hold
their club days on Saturday.
The Southern League returns
after a break for the Chatham
Cup.
Ninth-placed FC Twenty 11
face unbeaten Christchurch
the Chatham Cup.
FC Twenty 11 also managed a
2-1 win over Halswell United.
Selwyn are looking for their
first league win since round 3
when they beat FC Twenty 11
1-0. Selwyn go into their game
against Coastal Spirit following a
1-0 loss to Cashmere Technical.
Coastal cruised to a 5-1 win
against Burwood in the first
round of the Chatham Cup.
Ferrymead Bays fittingly beat
Nomads 2-1 in club stalwart
Chris Murphy’s 400th game
It was the third loss by five
RUGBY LEAGUE
Hornby will look to regain
momentum in their clash against
the Riccarton Knights tomorrow
night, while the Eagles host the
Northern Bulldogs on Saturday.
The Linwood Keas play the
Halswell Hornets on Saturday.
Linwood continued their
unbeaten start to the season
last weekend, while the Eastern
Eagles surprised second-placed
Hornby in round 7.
The Eagles were able to hang
on to their 14-12 halftime lead,
taking the game 30-18.
Linwood delivered a stellar
second half performance against
the Bulldogs in round 7, turning
an early 12-6 lead in the first
half into a 44-10 win. The Keas
play the Halswell Hornets who
go into round 8 off the back
of a hard-fought win over the
Knights. The Hornets managed
to hold on to their 12-6 lead after
40 minutes, winning 18-12.
HOCKEY
After four rounds, the
competition has been fierce in
both Canterbury premier league
grades.
In the women’s grade, little
separates Marist and Carlton
Redcliffs who are both on 10
points. Carlton drew 2-2 with
HSOB/Burnside in round 4,
while Marist powered to a 5-1
win over Harewood.
Carlton have a bye, while
Marist are looking to add
another three points to their tally
with a win against Hornby.
Hornby are in search of their
first win following a bye last
week.
Avon take on Harewood after
their 3-0 victory over winless
Southern.
Southern face HSOB/Burnside
who come off a hard-fought
draw.
Carlton Redcliffs are heavily
favoured to beat winless
University on Saturday.
However, Carlton will be hurting
after they went down to HSOB/
Burnside 4-0 in their first loss of
the season. University lost by the
same scoreline to Hornby.
HSOB/Burnside will want
to retain top spot with a win
over seventh-placed Southern.
Southern handed Avon their first
win of the season 2-0 last week.
Avon take on Harewood who
narrowly beat Marist 5-4 in a
high scoring match at Marist
Park.
Marist will look to bounce
back from their first loss of the
year with a win over Hornby on
Saturday.
TOP YOUNG golfer Cooper
Moore completed a rare feat by
winning the Waitikiri senior
championship for the third time
at the age of just 14.
Cooper beat Canterbury
masters No 1 Woo Bong Kim
5 and 4 in the 36-hole final.
A consistent first 18 holes saw
Cooper 4 up and well under
par. In the afternoon a great
up-and-down on the third hole
and a birdie on four saw the lead
6 up. After that, smart regulation
play forced Kim to make birdies
to win holes, but the task was
beyond him.
While the statistic of three
in succession may not be rare,
to win it in fields including
Canterbury representatives
at the ages of 12, 13 and 14 is.
OLD RIVALS Christchurch
Boys’ High and Nelson College
will headline round 2 of the
Miles Toyota Premiership in a
blockbuster clash.
After winning their first two
matches, defending champions
Nelson will travel to Christchurch
to take on CBHS at their
club day on Saturday.
Nelson are coming off a dominant
game against last season’s
finalists St Bede’s College. They
gained their second bonus point
of the season in the 32-17 home
win.
After a close start to their first
round match against Timaru
Boys’ High, CBHS scored 31
unanswered points in the second
half to win 53-22.
St Andrew’s College look for
their first win against Malborough
Boys’ College who beat
Shirley Boys’ High 32-14 in
round 1.
Shirley host St Thomas’ of
Canterbury College on Saturday.
St Thomas, who were semi finalists
las season, went down 21-7 to
Christ’s College in the previous
round. Christ’s travel to Darfield
to play Selwyn Combined on
Saturday after Selwyn handed St
Andrew’s their second loss 31-24.
After losing their opening
games, Timaru and St Bede’s
face each other in Timaru.
When Cooper first won he was
the youngest player to have won
the trophy since its inception in
1939.
The championship began with
two qualifying rounds where
Cooper shot 67 then a course
record equaling 64, to be the top
seed for the 16-player knockout
matchplay. He comfortably
won his first two matches
before being fully tested in the
WHEN FORMER Crusaders
centre Robbie Fruean wanted
to get back into the rugby
environment, he wasn’t
expecting to be coaching a team
so soon.
Fruean, 34, is leading the new
Horomaka Combined first XV in
the Miles Toyota Championship.
The team is made up of players
from Hillmorton, Hornby and
Riccarton high schools, as well
as Middleton Grange and Hagley
Community College.
Fruean was forced into retirement
in 2017 due to ongoing
heart problems.
He was Hillmorton High’s
first XV head coach last year and
remains as the school’s director
of rugby.
“I wanted to get back into
rugby in some way, so I reached
out to some church friends and
asked if there was any space at
Hillmorton,” he said.
“I went from that to head of
rugby and coaching the school’s
team pretty quickly.”
Fruean and Hillmorton High
staff discussed the school fielding
a team in the competition
alone. But the goal did not look
achievable for another 10 years.
“We didn’t have enough competition
within players and no
opportunity to grow,” he said.
So Fruean reached out to other
schools with students from similar
backgrounds and no current
rugby programme.
“It was a case of who best suits
the combination of schools, with
the aim to change the stereotypes
from those school areas”
he said. “Now they don’t have
to go anywhere else to play first
XV and can stay at their local
school.”
The championship feeds into
the first XV premiership and
includes several second XVs and
semifinal. Cooper eventually
prevailed against Canterbury
masters representative Brett
Turner 2 and 1.
Cooper’s hot form here and
in Australia has seen him make
the New Zealand under-19 team
for the Toyota Junior Golf World
Cup in Aichi, Japan, in June.
It will be the first time New
Zealand has sent a team to the
World Cup since 2018.
known for playing rugby.
The changed 10-team Miles
Toyota Premiership and the
establishment of the new
championship grade means
Horomaka are able to play in a
competitive grade.
In a few years, the team may
be able to compete in the premiership
due to the promotion/
relegation format.
“We’ve got a really young
Cooper Moore
Fruean leads combined
side into new first XV era
team this year so, honestly, it’s
been more about setting some
foundations in place for the years
to come.”
Fruean is a “big fan” of the
changes to the first XV competitions.
“It’s allowed us to compete. It
just means that the competition
is a lot more even. I think it’s a
great initiative,” he said.
Horomaka had a promising
start to the season at the weekend,
going down to Roncalli
College combined 10-3. But being
able to play in the competition
means more than a winning
for the team. “It’s about allowing
opportunity for these kids who
might have not had this opportunity
otherwise,” Fruean said.
“I think the boys actually
realised how close to the
competition they are in a
competition that feels so far
away.”
her revamped production.
When asked about her return to New
aer so many years”.
e two-hour international production
A WOMAN who takes in
abandoned turtles is warning
would-be reptile owners about
buying them online.
Donna Moot has rescued
hundreds of sick, injured or
abandoned turtles over the past 15
Over winter, Moot may spend
up to a $1000 a month on electricity
to run and heat the many water
tank habitats in her home. Some
turtles aren’t strong enough to hibernate
outside through the winter
and have to be brought indoors.
But Moot believes turtles make
years – many of which were once
people’s pets.
She says anyone planning to
great pets – for the right person.
“I get a lot of turtles that have
been bought on Trade Me.
turtles by post across the country.
“People find them and sometimes
they’re surrendered and they
come here until I can get them
rehabilitated and re-homed.”
SAVED:
Donna Moot
with Turbo
the turtle.
her house in Somerfield, which is
currently home to about 75 turtles.
“All the food, all the equipment
I pay for myself. I’m very fortunate
here tha the Canterbury SPCA,
they will support me with the
stray turtles, so they’ll help with
vet bills for that.”
minimum donation of $20, which
isn’t very much, but I expec that
the person can show me that
they’ve go the correct set up, so
they may have to fork out quite a
bit of money for that.”
