Bluegrass Land Conservancy sets records in
our first year and receives re-accreditation
Bluegrass Conservancy and Limestone Land Trust came
together at the end of 2016 through a mutually-held
belief that conservation of farmland and natural lands
in the Bluegrass region is the key to preserving our identity,
economy, and quality of life. By working together we aimed to increase
efficiency, create a stronger voice for conservation, and increase the pace
of land protection across the region. Bluegrass Land Conservancy (BLC)
was formed on these strong ideals, with lofty goals to show our progress.
We are thrilled to report that, thanks to the increased support of our community, our
first full fiscal year as a merged organization was an overwhelming success. Not only
were we able to accomplish the task of nearly doubling our operating budget but we
also protected 10 properties on 1,697 acres across the Bluegrass. 2017-2018 brought
our first conserved properties in the Louisville region, protecting farms in Oldham,
Henry, Nelson, and Marion counties. In addition, BLC was awarded a 5-year renewal
of national accreditation by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission. Our continued
progress has allowed us to solidify our place as one of the top-performing accredited
land trusts in the region as well as the country! We could not have accomplished this
feat without the support of our community, the dedication of our Board, and the
expertise of our professional staff.
In the land trust world, we like to say that we are in the “Forever” business—conserving
our land and resources not just for today but for future generations. While we are elated
to share our current successes, our plans for the future must be solid. As such, we
continue to place emphasis on growing our Operating Endowment and Stewardship
Fund, ensuring the work of BLC can continue for years to come. We are also focused
on creating programs to grow support among our business and corporate communities.
Our new Corporate Partners program now allows businesses to invest in the future of
the Bluegrass region through supporting BLC.
As we step into our second year, we are excited to build
upon the past and work to advance our mission into the future.
With your continued support, we aim to maintain and grow
the pace and quality of land conservation across the Bluegrass
region. We are focused on protecting our Bluegrass lands in
perpetuity, while providing great service to our landowners.
Feel free to reach out to any of us at any time; we are always
happy to hear from you.
Jessie Wilder
Executive Director
Founded in 1995, Bluegrass Land Conservancy works to protect the Bluegrass region of
Kentucky through land conservation for future generations. As a nationally accredited,
community supported, 501(c)(3) nonprofit land trust, we work on a voluntary basis with
landowners, community groups, and municipalities to encourage the preservation of
land for agricultural viability, natural habitat, rural heritage, and scenic open space.
CREATIVE GIVING TO CLOSE THE YEAR
© ISTOCK.COM/PAULACOBLEIGH
As the holidays approach, many families take stock of their blessings
and look for ways to give back to their communities. A financial gift
to BLC helps support the organization’s mission to make Kentucky
a better place to live, work, and play. Charitable giving not only assists
BLC in achieving its goals but also provides significant tax advantages
for individuals and families.
Near the end of the year, financial
advisors often review with clients various
strategies that may be employed to
minimize the client’s income tax burden
Many of these strategies involve charitable
giving, which can yield positive outcomes
for the individual as well as for a charitable
organization.
In addition to making a cash contribution
or donating a conservation easement,
below are two strategies for charitable
contributions that our clients choose to
implement with minimal effort on a
regular basis:
Make a “qualified charitable distribution”
from an IRA directly to a charity.
• If you are age 70½ or older, up to
$100,000 may be distributed directly to
a charity from your IRA each tax year.
•You can avoid treating this distribution
as income, but it still counts toward your
required minimum distribution (“RMD”)
for the year.
Make charitable gifts using appreciated
stock you have held for more than one year.
•You can deduct the full fair market value
of the stock as a charitable deduction,
and you will avoid recognizing the gain
from the appreciation.
•If you really like the stock, buy it in the
market using the cash that you would
have otherwise used for year-end giving
and repeat your gift the following year.
Receiving an income tax deduction is
not the primary reason most clients make
charitable gifts, but if those gifts can be
made in a manner that results in a reduced
income tax burden, the response from the
client is usually, “why not?”
Every client’s circumstances are different,
so if you think that you may benefit from
one or more of the strategies mentioned
above, please contact your tax advisor
to discuss potential tax implications.
What is a Bicentennial Farm?
During the celebration of Kentucky's Bicentennial in 1992,
the Kentucky Heritage Council and the Department of
Agriculture partnered on the Historic Farms program.
The Historic Farms program recognized the importance of
agriculture to Kentucky’s history and the role of the family
farm in that history. Plaques and certificates were awarded
to Historic Farms that had remained in the same family line for
100, 150, or 200 years and to Heritage Farms with significant
historic resources. Annewood Farms was recognized as a
Bicentennial Farm for its 200 years of family history.

PRESERVING FAMILY HISTORY
Bicentennial Farm in Oldham County Protected in Perpetuity
Annewood Farms, the only Bicentennial Farm
remaining in Oldham County, is now protected
with a Bluegrass Land Conservancy conservation
easement thanks to its owner, Julia L. Fields. The
400-acre property is located near Goshen, KY, where
it anchors the western terminus of the US Highway 42
Scenic Byway. The increased suburban expansion of
nearby Louisville has exacerbated development
pressure around Annewood in recent years, but with
the creation of this conservation easement, BLC is
proud to preserve this working farm in perpetuity.
“My earliest memories of the farm were of absolute bliss,” says
Julia. “I have a very deep emotional attachment to this soil. It is,
quite simply, in my genes.” Her passionate attachment to the farm
is rooted deep in family history.
As she explains: “Following the Revolutionary
War, the government of the new United
States lacked money to pay the troops who
had fought to achieve our freedom and
many of the soldiers were paid with land
instead. One such soldier was James Taylor
of Virginia, my great-great-great-great
grandfather, who received a grant of much
of the land that now comprises Annewood
Farms in 1789. He deeded the property to – Julia L. Fields
his daughter, Ann Pendleton Taylor, as a
kind of dowry when she married Thomas
Crutchfield. Ann died in childbirth, and her widower conveyed
the land to Adam Shrader, from whom it descended until early in
the 20th century, when it was sold outside the family for about a
generation. My grandfather, Charles R. Bottorff, who was a direct
descendant of both James Taylor (through his mother) and of
Adam Shrader (through his father), repurchased the farm in 1940.
Because the Taylor and Shrader families converged in him, my
grandfather always felt that the property was ‘his’ twice over. My
mother, Anne Bottorff Fields, inherited the farm from [him], and I
inherited it from her.”
Raised in Jefferson County, Julia left Kentucky to attend Yale
University, where she was in the first class of undergraduate
women to be admitted to the school. After graduation she
continued her education in Connecticut, studying at Yale Law
School. She says she moved back to Annewood “as soon as the
“[F]arming is the most
back- and heart-breaking
occupation one can choose.
It is also the most fulfilling
and worthy of pride.”
ink was dry on my Bar Certificate.” Though she spent 20 years as
a District Court Judge in Oldham, Henry, and Trimble Counties,
retiring in 2002, “at heart,” Julia says,“ I will always be a farmer.”
Julia and her husband, Jim Maples, along with a pack of beloved
German Shepherds, live in the two-story brick farmhouse her
ancestor, Adam Shrader, built over 200 years ago. To the extent
possible, Julia was a hands-on farmer for many years, as was
her husband Jim. She learned to operate most of the equipment
involved in raising grain—she jokes about driving the last combine
on earth without a cab during grain harvest and struggling to
back silage wagons uphill during the annual fill.
“[My grandfather] loved farming, and when he bought the farm
back in 1940, he raised Angus cattle. I was very much involved
in the cattle operation as well until the early 1990s,” she says.
When Jim’s health began to fail, the cattle were sold, and the
family’s active role in the operation declined. At present, part of
Annewood is leased to a Thoroughbred breeder for pasture, and
much of the remainder is farmed on shares
with a corn and soybean producer.
Julia and Jim miss being more active in
farming, which they say, produced both their
best and worst memories. According to Julia,
“[F]arming is the most back- and heartbreaking
occupation one can choose. It is
also the most fulfilling and worthy of pride.
To every man and woman driving a tractor
on a family farm today, thank you. You may
be an endangered species, but you remain
the heartbeat of this nation.”
Historic farms like Annewood are increasingly rare, but the
development pressure they face is not. Farmland loss is occurring
at a staggering rate with 31 million acres lost between 1992 and
2012. Seventy percent of urban development occurs on agricultural
land as our cities and suburbs continue to expand. *
Protecting places like Annewood Farms is more important now
than ever to preserve our culture, heritage, and the environment.
Bluegrass Land Conservancy is proud to partner with landowners
like Julia to ensure our agricultural legacy is preserved for
generations to come.
CONSERVATION AWARD
Ned’s wife, Nina, and sons Robert and Shelby
accept the award on behalf of Ned from
BLC Vice-chairman, W. Austin Musselman, Jr.
The Land Conservationist
of the Year Award aims
to recognize the efforts of
individuals who make a
significant and lasting contribution
to land conservation and
natural resource protection
in Kentucky, including the
Bluegrass region.
Ned Bonnie, BLC Director Emeritus named
“Land Conservationist of the Year”
During a time when conservation, and land conservation in particular,
was a new concept in the country, Ned was a visionary for Kentucky.
Starting in 1968, Ned championed the adoption of county-wide
planning and zoning for Oldham County to benefit the whole community.
Knowing that planning and zoning wasn’t enough to stop the development
of our prime farmland, Ned helped found multiple conservation organizations,
on whose Boards he faithfully served: Harrods Creek Land Trust, Oldham
Ahead, and Limestone Land Trust, to name a few.
However, Ned had a bigger picture for conservation in forming Limestone Land Trust and
championed a merger with Bluegrass Conservancy to create Kentucky’s largest private,
nonprofit, regional land trust, Bluegrass Land Conservancy, to which he was named an
Emeritus Board Member. Always one to walk the walk, Ned and his wife Nina placed a
conservation easement on Stonelea Farm in 2012, permanently protecting 524 acres of
land in the Harrods Creek watershed.
An avid fox hunter and champion of equine sports, Ned believed strongly in the
importance of protecting our community heritage and land resources, but Ned’s biggest
contribution to conservation may be his mentorship of young professionals in the Louisville
region and beyond. He advised numerous landowners throughout the conservation
easement process and trained countless attorneys along the way about the importance
of community planning and thoughtful conservation.
While a void was certainly left in the land trust community when Ned passed away
this spring, the legacy he leaves in the Bluegrass region cannot be overstated.
The 2017-2018 conservation
easement donors were
recognized at a recent event
where they received brass plaques
commemorating the preservation of
their property. Recent conservation
easement donors, Steve South and
Sue Van Patten had this to say
about their experience:
“We retired to our rural Woodford
County property in 2007. And we have
personally worked many long days,
improving our stone walls and clearing
the woods of invasive honeysuckle. Also,
we have planted many different native
species of trees to add more diversity
to the woods. Therefore we wanted to
ensure future owners would maintain
what we worked so hard to accomplish.
Once we learned about the mission of
Bluegrass Land Conservancy we became
supporters and began the process of
establishing a conservation easement.
We are proud to add our land to the
preservation of the Bluegrass region
environment interactions. He also minored
in Geography, where he focused his
studies on GIS and Environmental
Analysis.
Emmanuel’s love of adventure and
outdoor recreation is where he discovered
his love for Kentucky’s scenic farms and
natural habitats. This led him to develop
a deep passion for land protection and
conservation, and he is more than thrilled
to be a part of Bluegrass Land Conservancy.
Together, we will be working diligently to
conserve and steward more farms across
the Bluegrass.
GETTING UP CLOSE
Timber Town Stables, located at the outskirts of Lexington, Kentucky,
is home to some of the premiere broodmares for the Thoroughbred
racing industry.
Kentucky day—stable owners Cathy and Wayne Sweezey, in collaboration with horse
owner Mandy Pope, provided a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Thoroughbred-lovers
to meet some of the equine queens of the industry. This event, benefitting the work of
Bluegrass Land Conservancy, highlighted the phenomenal broodmare band of Whisper
Hill Farm, featuring champion mares Songbird, Havre De Grace, Plum Pretty, Groupie
Doll, and Unrivaled Belle.
Terrence Collier, marketing director at Fasig-Tipton—renowned auction house for
Thoroughbred and Standardbred horses—provided a multi-media presentation and
warm introduction for the famous mares and their progeny. This connection to an
authentic Thoroughbred experience was followed by viewings of the famous horses,
with trainers parading the mares, colts, and fillies for the participants to admire. A silent
auction during the event featured halters from each mare showcased, allowing several
lucky guests to take home a piece of horse-racing history.
Bluegrass Land Conservancy extends a very special thanks to the Sweezeys, Mandy
Pope, Natalie H. Lyster, Terrence Collier, the Timber Town Stables staff, and of course,
the gorgeous mares of Timber Town, for providing such a special opportunity.
Bluegrass Land Conservancy is pleased to announce a new Corporate
Partners program, providing an opportunity for local businesses
and farms to join a community of organizations that support the
mission and vision of BLC: to protect land in the greater Bluegrass region
of Kentucky through permanent conservation easements for current and
future generations.
Woodford Reserve, distillers of worldfamous
bourbon, recently committed to
join the Corporate Partners program.
Chris Morris, Master Distiller at Woodford
Reserve, reflects on the distillery’s
connection to the BLC mission: “Along
the Kentucky Bourbon Trail there are some
historic rural distilleries, and those rural
distilleries exist because of a water source.
This is the birthplace of bourbon because
of our natural limestone water, our local
farms, and our local forests supplying oak.
Nobody else has that combination.”
He continues, “It’s very important to
maintain that balance and to protect what
is special today for future generations so it
is not lost.”
With this program, BLC is moving toward a
model where we will engage our business,
corporate, and farm supporters as active
partners in land conservation.
The Corporate Partners program provides
an opportunity for organizations to
augment an established commitment to
the greater Bluegrass region. Partnering
with BLC raises a business’s visibility as
a key player in protecting the unique
character of the Bluegrass region—
the place where the business conducts
enterprise and the community in which
employees live.
Partners will be recognized throughout the
year in marketing and outreach materials
and at special events. Event admissions,
increased exposure, and special acknowledgements
will be included in partners’
package of benefits. Several of the
program’s suggested partnership levels
include opportunities to connect with staff
and to provide community programming.
Partnership support will allow BLC to
conserve and steward more land, while
providing educational programs and
outreach to the community.
BLC Corporate Partners will directly
contribute to the vision for a future where
the region’s distinctive soils, cultural
heritage, scenic vistas, natural resources,
and farms are preserved forever.
“At Glenview Trust we encourage our clients to focus on the things
that are important to them and to do what they love—that’s why
our goal is to create or preserve their financial means to do so,”
said Tawana Edwards, Co-CEO of Chief Fiduciary Officer at
Glenview Trust. “We support Bluegrass Land Conservancy
because it does impactful work, as it preserves the natural
land resources in our region.”
Bluegrass Land Conservancy protects land
in the greater Bluegrass Region of Kentucky
through permanent conservation easements
for current and future generations.
We do this through education and by
promoting the preservation of land for
agriculture, historic and cultural heritage,
wildlife habitat, natural resources,
water quality, and scenic open
space, in order to sustain a high
quality of life.
SAVE MORE THAN YOUR LAND...
Calling all farmers—and owners
of natural lands—there is a federal
tax incentive just for you!
Congress has enacted an enhanced federal tax benefit for
conservation easement donations. Conservation easements are
the most effective tool for protecting your land from development.
This powerful tax break may allow you, as a donor, to use your
appraised conservation easement value to:
• Deduct up to 50% of your adjusted gross income (AGI)
in any year;
• Deduct up to 100% AGI if the majority of that income came
from farming, ranching, or forestry, and;
• Take deductions for up to 16 years.
