review video of break-in

A SUMNER convenience 

store owner was surprised it 

took police 10 days to review 

CCTV footage showing young 

offenders raiding her business. 

Four young people, one who 

looked about 12, smashed their 

way into the Sumner Metro 

Mart on Wakefield Ave, taking 

vaping products, at 3.50am on 

Saturday, May 13. 

Metro Mart staff discovered 

the break-in when they arrived 

at work. 

Police attended at 2pm. 

The owner, who did not want to 

be named, said police looked at 

the CCTV footage to see where 

fingerprints could be taken, 

but did not ask for the footage, 

saying a police website link 

would be sent where the footage 

could be uploaded to.

Davidson’s been creating as a Stoddart 

Cottage-Purau artist-in-residence in

While better known for his award 

winning music, Delaney has a rich 

background in visual arts, the focus 

of his residency in Diamond Harbour.

about some of the new works he’s

Working in oils, printmaking and 

design, he has exhibited his work in 

solo shows in Melbourne, Switzerland 

and New Zealand. 

As an artist-in-residence at 

Massey University last year, Delaney 

presented two exhibitions and a 

nationwide campaign in collaboration 

with Tame Iti. During this time, he 

also reconnected with his love of the 

landscape painting he’s exploring over 

the residency.

OKAINS BAY Museum has 

raised more than $20,000 for 

to replace its rusty and leaking 

spouting – almost $5000 more 

than its target. 

General manager and business 

builder Wendy Riley said the 

museum was “massively grateful” 

to everyone who contributed 

to its Stop the Leaks campaign. 

The money will be used to 

replace the spouting so the museum 

can continue to protect its 

collection of historic artefacts. 

A Givealittle campaign from 

May 1-13 raised $17,117 of the total, 

while offline donations made 

up the rest, Riley said.

Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge 

in Auckland. McKellar completed 

the 51-stair climb on Saturday in 

14min 12sec. He was 61st of 735 

firefighters. Nine members of the 

Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade 

also took part in the challenge, 

raising $20,382.

The ribbon was cut at the store 

yesterday by Lyttelton resident 

and radio personality Gary 

McCormick. 

Owners Robin and Cheryl 

De Thier and the FreshChoice 

Lyttelton team spent 14 hours 

yesterday preparing for the 

opening. 

“Every ticket in the store had 

to change,” Robin said. 

But he said the long hours 

were worth it to bring the 

upgraded range and prices to 

Lyttelton shoppers. 

“The branding change lowers 

the prices (and) the promotional 

programme will be better. 

“Anything to bring cheaper 

prices to Lyttelton.” 

Robin and Cheryl moved 

to Lyttelton after opening the 

SuperValue about nine years 

ago. 

The couple were approached 

by FreshChoice four weeks ago 

about the rebrand – and Robin 

felt it was a no-brainer.

“It’s a big investment for us. 

It’s scrubbed up really well.” 

The revamp cost $55,000, 

which covered all the internal

care of the outside, Robin said. 

McCormick, who has lived 

in Lyttelton for almost 20 

years, was pleased with the new 

supermarket. 

“A town is only as good as its 

local supermarket,” he said. 

“It looks fresher. I always shop 

here . . . we couldn’t do without 

a good supermarket.” 

McCormick said there were 

never queues at the store and 

many staff members had been 

there for a long time. 

McCormick said the new 

signage is much clearer and the 

increased amount of stock will 

useful.

7am-9pm, seven days a week.

Owner worried 

offenders might 

break-in again

But the owner said the link 

was not sent to her. So four days 

after the break-in, she took the 

initiative and went onto the 

police website where she was 

able to upload stills of the CCTV 

footage, which showed the faces 

of some of the offenders. 

The website would not allow 

her to upload the video so she 

put a file link to the video so 

investigators could access it. 

On Saturday, a week after the 

break-in, police emailed her, 

saying they could not access 

the video. She then successfully 

uploaded the video on Monday. 

But the Metro Mart owner is 

puzzled why police did not take 

the CCTV footage when they 

first attended. 

“I could have given her (the 

officer) video on the day if she 

asked,” the store owner said. 

She wasn’t sure if police 

would have found clues to the 

offenders’ identities earlier if 

they had received the footage 

sooner. 

The owner said she suggested 

to police other CCTV from the 

area, including traffic cameras 

entering Sumner, could build a 

picture of the youths travelling 

in a silver Nissan Hatchback. 

“The officer said it may not be 

much use as the car was likely 

stolen.” 

Police wouldn’t answer Bay 

Harbour News questions about 

why it took so long for the 

footage to be reviewed and why 

it wasn’t collected on the day. 

A spokesperson said they are 

reviewing CCTV footage from 

the store and other areas and 

inquiries are ongoing. 

Police also did not answer 

questions about whether the 

offenders had been identified or 

if they were aware they had been 

involved in other burglaries. 

The owner said since the 

burglary she has been nervous 

they might come back and 

break-in again. 

“It has been a bit hectic. Every 

day I’m just worried about 

another one coming in . . . I was 

told once you are targeted once 

they can do it again.” 

The owner has applied for 

the government’s fog cannon 

subsidy, which she hoped will 

deter future break-ins.

Port call for penguins 

LYTTELTON PORT Company 

mechanic Duncan Booth, with 

its environment team, has 

created a device to call whiteflippered 

penguins to nesting 

boxes at historic Battery Point. 

Booth has built a waterproof 

penguin attraction sound 

system using a used car stereo, a 

solar panel, a 4WD battery and a 

pair of horn speakers. 

“The battery is recycled from 

the straddle workshop and 

is slightly bigger than a car 

battery,” Booth said. 

“The sound is a digital 

recording of a penguin call on 

an SD card which is fitted to the 

car stereo. 

“The audio system is solar 

powered and when the sunlight 

exceeds the amount of current 

the stereo draws, the excess 

power will go to the battery as 

storage to be used at night.” 

The sound will be broadcast at 

dusk and then from 10pm every 

night for four hours on a loop 

when white-flippered penguins 

start to scope out their nesting 

spots. 

“Obviously, it needs to be 

slightly louder than the noise 

of the sea or the swells crashing 

against the rocks there,” he said. 

Found only in Canterbury, 

white-flippered penguin 

numbers are at about 10,000.

significance,” Jones said. 

“We are looking at putting 

out six or seven nesting boxes 

in June when we know they will 

start coming in and checking 

out new sites.”

hedgehog that has disguised itself 

in dirt, moss and leaves can hide 

from the sniffing power of pest 

detection dog Nightshade. 

Pest Free Banks Peninsula’s 

Nightshade found her first hibernating 

hedgehog on Kaitorete 

Spit near Birdlings Flat last week, 

a milestone for the dog conservation 

programme. 

PFBP dog handler Karin Bos 

and Nightshade, a three-and-ahalf-year-old 

border terrier, have 

been working on Kaitorete since 

December. 

“I really wasn’t sure she would 

be able to find them,” said Bos. 

“I was so, so happy.” 

Bos spends her days on the 

spit with Nightshade and Terry, 

a Welsh springer spaniel that 

specialises in detecting feral cats. 

Home to banded dotterel, oystercatchers, 

katipō spiders, as 

well as skinks and two species

By detecting scat, Bob can let 

Bos know where the hedgehogs 

have been and whether the 

programme has been successful

TREASURES FROM THE PAST 

Old post office proud in its heyday 

ŌHINEHOU Lyttelton’s 1875 

Post Office at 7 Norwich Quay, 

on the corner with Oxford 

St, was one of a large number 

of heritage buildings lost as a 

result of the February 22, 2011 

earthquake. 

It held category 2 historic place 

status, as did its neighbours the 

1880 Harbour Board Offices 

and Forbes’ Store (demolished 

post-earthquakes). Happily, the 

1862 Telegraph Office – New 

Zealand’s first – survived the 

rigours of tectonic movement 

and stands proud on its original 

site, a small heritage island 

surrounded by stacks of timber 

awaiting loading for export. 

At the time of the arrival of the 

first ‘colonists’ in Lyttelton and 

prior to reclamation, the water’s 

edge was very close here; initially 

a modest ‘shanty’ served as the 

Canterbury Association’s store 

and accommodated customs and 

postal services. 

As early as 1858 the structure 

was being described as 

disgracefully shabby, but it took 

until the early 1870s for the 

Provincial Council to commit 

funds for a customs house, post 

and telegraph office, and town 

clock. 

The resulting building was 

designed by William Clayton, 

a Tasmanian born and United 

Kingdom educated colonial 

architect, responsible for over 

180 government buildings 

in New Zealand, including 

Wellington’s old timber 

Government Buildings, and over 

80 post and telegraph offices 

around the country. 

His grand Italianate style 

incorporating Venetian and 

Gothic elements denoted the 

status of civic services, including 

the vital role of postmaster in the 

era before mass communication 

technologies. 

Foundations of cement topped 

by bluestone rubble walls were 

clad in warm-toned brick with 

reticulated white Portland 

cement dressings. Windows 

and portico were flanked by 

columns of the same material, 

with moulded bands and column 

caps of winding acanthus leaves 

highlighting those features. 

Inside, a fine kauri staircase 

swept to the upper floor, and 

mantelpieces glowed in the same 

varnished timber. 

Architecturally, Clayton’s 

Lyttelton building bore a strong 

resemblance to his later and 

much larger Christchurch 

Central Post Office, which 

originally also functioned as 

Government buildings. 

Constructed in 1878 after 

the completion of its Lyttelton 

cousin, it led to the first being 

regarded as something of a ‘trial 

run’ for the latter. The category 

1 historic place city building 

survived the earthquakes and 

has been carefully restored. 

In its heyday, Lyttelton’s 

Post Office was arguably its 

most important civic building, 

proudly flanking the main entry 

to the port when Norwich Quay 

was the bustling commercial 

heart of the town. 

Originally, it incorporated 

the Customs Department, 

post and telegraph functions, 

and Harbourmaster’s room,

office combined in 1881. It was 

elaborately decorated for both 

the coronation of Edward VII 

in 1902 and the 1953 coronation 

celebrations, when an elaborate 

arch spanned Oxford St. 

In 1944, the distinctive 

6m clock and bell tower was 

removed and in 1976 a new 

post office with a distinctive 

salmon pink exterior was built 

on the corner of Canterbury and 

London Sts, said building now 

housing the Lyttelton Library 

and city council service centre. 

In the years immediately 

prior to the earthquakes the 

original post office on Norwich 

Quay accommodated various 

hospitality and commercial 

activities, until its demolition in 

August 2011. 

The post office site itself is 

highly significant for both Māori 

and Pakeha, and is an important 

archaeological area. 

Excavations carried out in 

2016 revealed evidence of pre- 

European occupation; an oven 

and midden deposits conveyed 

a wealth of information 

about early mahinga kai 

(food gathering) practices. 

Radiocarbon dating of the site 

indicated it was in use from 

between 1465-1660. A small 

broken adze was also found. 

At the time of first Māori- 

European contact in the early 

decades of the 19th century, 

local Māori had a fishing village 

and market area with several 

whare on this land, so too on 

land close to the tunnel entrance 

where Ōhinehou Pou at Sutton 

Reserve marks the significance 

of that site to Te Hapū o Ngāti 

Wheke.
