‘Tears and joy’ as owner nets 

bonus $100k at auction

THE OWNERS of a family 

home in Fendalton were 

brought to tears after their 

property of almost 20 years 

sold under the hammer for at 

least $100,000 more than what 

they were expecting. 

Bidding for the four-bedroom, 

two-bathroom Bryndwr 

Rd home opened at $900,000, it 

was announced on the market 

at $1.21 million, and eventually 

sold for $1.335m after 30 bids 

were placed at the Harcourts 

Grenadier auction last week.

“They are already living here, 

and their kids are getting to 

that age where they need to get 

school zones sorted out either 

this year or next, so they are 

starting now,” he said. 

“It’s back to that old chestnut 

– location, location, location. 

It’s a good location – it’s not 

true blue-chip Fendalton, 

it’s on the verge. The true 

Fendalton is $1.6m and above 

sort of thing.” 

The sale price of $1.335m was 

probably in the slightly lower to 

mid-price range for Fendalton, 

he added. 

“It’s a real sweet spot for 

budget.” 

The average property value 

in Fendalton is $1.496m, down 

17.3 per cent year-on-year, 

according to OneRoof-Valocity 

data. 

Innes said there continued 

to be strong demand for 

family homes in Fendalton in 

that price range and a similar 

property for sale on the same 

street a month ago had also 

attracted a lot of interest. 

“That agent told me that they 

had 100 groups to their open 

home, and I thought ‘how am 

I going to compete with that’, 

and lo and behold we had 120.” 

While all the people bidding 

on the Bryndwr Rd property 

were local families, Innes 

said there were still a lot of 

out-of-towners turning up to 

open homes looking for good 

properties. 

Last year a luxury home on 

Helmores Lane in Fendalton 

sold under the hammer for 

$6.8m, just missing out on 

breaking the city’s long-held 

auction sale record by $25,000. 

However, it did take the record 

for the most expensive property 

to sell in Christchurch in 

2022. 

The auction sale record 

for Christchurch is held by 

a five-bedroom 1930s house 

on a huge 4961sq m riverside 

section on Glandovey Rd, also 

in Fendalton, that sold at a 

Bayleys auction for $6.825m 

five years ago.

We’ve just released Budget 2023, which 

provides more support for today and 

outlines the next steps in our plan to 

build for tomorrow. 

This Budget provides practical cost 

of living support across some of the 

core expenses facing New Zealanders 

– childcare, healthcare, transport and 

power bills. It will help to make things 

a bit easier for families, students and 

older New Zealanders by reducing 

or removing some of the costs they 

currently face. Millions of Kiwis will 

pay a little less as a result. 

We’re helping parents stretch their 

budgets a little further, by making 

childcare cheaper with 20 hours 

free ECE for two-year-olds. We’re 

helping with health costs by removing 

prescription charges for medicines. 

We’re permanently cutting the costs 

of public transport for young New 

Zealanders. We’re also reducing power 

bills by making Kiwi homes more 

energy efficient. 

Budget 2023 also includes a massive 

boost to our country’s infrastructure 

which has been tested during the recent 

flooding and cyclone. That’s why we’ve 

allocated significant funds to build 

back better with greater resilience, to 

protect communities from increasingly 

severe and unpredictable weather 

events. 

It’s a practical Budget that does the 

basics well and makes investments 

where they are needed most. But we 

need to do more than just respond to 

the challenges of today, we also need to 

build for the future. 

That’s why we’re continuing to make 

targeted investments in areas that 

are critical to grow the economy 

and lift productivity. Investing in 

infrastructure, skills, science and 

technology supports every area of the 

economy. It’s how we support people 

into work, drive higher wages for Kiwis 

and build a stronger economy.

Huge planting season for river corridor 

THE 2023 native planting season 

is shaping up to be the biggest 

yet for the Ōtākaro Avon River 

Corridor, with 17 community 

days scheduled before the end of 

September. 

The city council’s red zone rangers 

will team up with community 

groups and volunteers to plant 

tens of thousands of natives at 

Brooker Reserve, Chimera Crescent, 

Dudley Creek, Richmond 

Community Garden, Waikakariki-Horseshoe 

Lake, Dallington, 

Cedarwood Reserve and Amelia 

Rogers Reserve. 

City council residential red zone 

manager David Little is expecting 

this year’s planting season to 

surpass last year’s. 

“The OARC Regeneration Plan 

has a significant emphasis on 

ecologically restoring the area, 

and the involvement of volunteers 

and community organisations is 

central to the success of this happening,” 

said Little. 

“Last year’s planting season saw 

volunteers and organisations help 

our red zone rangers and parks 

teams cover 88 hectares of land 

with more than 50,000 native 

plants. 

“We’re very grateful to everyone 

who helped make 2022 a big success 

from a planting perspective, 

and we’re hoping to keep that 

momentum going this year.” 

Students involved with the Eco- 

Action Nursery Trust held the 

first planting day of the season at 

Chimera Cres on Sunday, while 

the Avon-Ōtākaro Forest Park undertook 

its first event at Brooker 

Reserve. 

Little said five maintenance 

days will also be held between 

September and November.

Mazda CX-5 Activ – point of difference 

THERE’S NOTHING more 

satisfying than picking up an 

evaluation car and immediately 

being familiar with the layout

management protocols that will 

help enhance grip on slippery 

surfaces. 

The CX-5 Activ lists at $51,390 

and sits mid-way in a six-model 

CX-5 line-up, bearing in mind 

the series starts at $42,690 

for a 2-litre front-drive only 

model and ends at $64,690 

for a turbocharged 2.5-litre 

Takami. The Activ also gets the 

2.5-litre engine, but it is sans 

turbocharger, the naturally 

aspirated unit still pumps out 

a healthy 140kW and 252Nm, 

both realised at traditional 

parts of the rev band 4000 and 

6000rpm respectively. While 

these are healthy outputs, the 

performance doesn’t come at 

the cost of unnecessary fuel 

usage, the engine management 

structure keeps the revs down 

and it will happily haul in from 

almost idle speeds,. 

According to Mazda, the 

CX-5 models with the naturally 

aspirated engine are rated 

at 7.4-litres per 100km on a 

combined cycle average. My 

testing time yielded some 

interesting figures. I was 

fortunate to have the evaluation 

car for an entire week and 

during that time it was used a 

daily commute which produced 

a 9l/100km onboard average. On 

the highway that figure dropped 

to 7.8l/100km with 6l/100km 

showing instantaneously 

at 100km/h (engine speed 

2000rpm). 

Because drive is channelled to 

all four corners, the suspension 

is a fully independent system 

and it has spring and damper 

rates firmed only just slightly. 

Normally, I wouldn’t tackle 

anything off the seal in an 

evaluation car unless there was 

little choice and for a specific 

purpose. However, curiosity 

surrounding the Mi-Drive 

four-wheel-drive system got the 

better of me in the CX-5 Activ. 

There’s an open subdivision near 

Darfield with some undulating 

mounds of dirt that was neither 

taxing nor dirty, the CX-5 easing 

gently over the uneven terrain 

with decent ground clearance. 

I’ve always rated Mazda 

products highly, and now that 

my wife and I are fully fledged 

members of the Mazda family 

nothing has changed that 

opinion. I can categorically say 

that anyone who purchases a 

CX-5 Activ will be delighted 

with the purchase.
