A NEW $650,000 sealed pump 

track at Bexley Reserve has 

opened to the public. 

The 2500m 2 track caters for 

bikes, scooters, skateboards and 

even wheelchairs. 

North Avon Christchurch 

BMX Club paid for and built 

the pump track on land next to 

its existing BMX track. 

The club gifted the track to 

the city council, which will look 

after the ongoing maintenance. 

It includes two loops, one of

wheelchairs. 

The pump track is part of a 

bigger redevelopment of Bexley 

Reserve, which includes a learnto-ride 

cycle safety facility and 

new playground.

parks manager Al Hardy said 

its partnership with the BMX 

club was extremely positive. 

“The club managed the 

fundraising and design-build of 

the track and they’ve created an

but has since passed away.

nearby compost plant – which is 

aggravating asthma and ruining 

their quality of life. 

City councillors have agreed to 

move the council-owned Living 

Earth organics 

processing plant off

set to consider a 

report next month 

outlining options for 

the city’s kerbside 

green waste as staff 

work to find a new 

site.

near the plant warn they are at

“It’s torture, it’s driving me crazy. 

I just can’t believe that we have to 

live like this on this side of town. It’s 

bloody inhumane.”

Huge planting season for river corridor 

THE 2023 native planting season 

is shaping up to be the biggest 

yet for the Ōtākaro Avon River 

Corridor, with 17 community 

days scheduled before the end of 

September. 

The city council’s red zone rangers 

will team up with community 

groups and volunteers to plant 

tens of thousands of natives at 

Brooker Reserve, Chimera Crescent, 

Dudley Creek, Richmond 

Community Garden, Waikakariki-Horseshoe 

Lake, Dallington, 

Cedarwood Reserve and Amelia 

Rogers Reserve. 

City council residential red zone 

manager David Little is expecting 

this year’s planting season to 

surpass last year’s. 

“The OARC Regeneration Plan 

has a significant emphasis on 

ecologically restoring the area, 

and the involvement of volunteers 

and community organisations is 

central to the success of this happening,” 

said Little. 

“Last year’s planting season saw 

volunteers and organisations help 

our red zone rangers and parks 

teams cover 88 hectares of land 

with more than 50,000 native 

plants. 

“We’re very grateful to everyone 

who helped make 2022 a big success 

from a planting perspective, 

and we’re hoping to keep that 

momentum going this year.” 

Students involved with the Eco- 

Action Nursery Trust held the 

first planting day of the season at 

Chimera Cres on Sunday, while 

the Avon-Ōtākaro Forest Park undertook 

its first event at Brooker 

Reserve. 

Little said five maintenance 

days will also be held between 

September and November.

Residents fed up with 

compost plant stench

lung infection, and has been 

diagnosed with a wheeze 

since the start of the year. She 

said other family members in 

Bromley are suffering from 

asthma. 

“With composting, they tell 

you that you need to wear a mask 

because there’s stuff in there 

that’s not good for you,” she said. 

The plant has been the subject 

of many complaints since it 

opened in 2009, although the 

stink differs to the stench from 

the burnt-out wastewater treatment 

plant in the same suburb. 

Walker’s neighbour Katinka 

Visser said the compost smell 

had worsened since the start 

of the year, despite city council 

assurances offensive odours were 

being managed. 

She said the stench from food 

and garden waste in the city’s 

green wheelie bins ranged from a 

“horrible musty, mouldy smell” 

to a chemical spray-type odour 

that made her sneeze and gave 

her a sore throat. 

“The stuff that goes in there 

is really putrid, slimy, yucky, 

mucky stuff,” she said. 

“It’s stuff in the fridge that 

we’re not going to eat, it’s 

virtually crawling out of the 

fridge before it goes into the bin, 

so it’s rotten, really rotten. We 

shouldn’t have to live like this.” 

Bromley residents have 

repeatedly pleaded for the plant 

to be closed immediately, but a 

city council report found this 

could cost ratepayers $41 million 

over five years and lead to 55,000 

tonnes of organic waste being 

dumped at Kate Valley landfill in 

North Canterbury annually. 

The city council has instead 

opted to move the plant and 

short-listed six replacement sites. 

In the meantime, Living 

Earth was funding work to 

mitigate any potential sources 

of odour, the city council 

said. The measures included 

hiring an additional screen to 

separate finer compost from 

sticks and tailings, removing

surplus tailings from the site and 

increasing the number of days 

green waste was held in tunnels 

from 14 to 22 days to give the 

compost more time to mature. 

The council said refurbishment 

of the main biofilter was 

expected to be complete by the 

start of June. 

The regulator, Environment 

Canterbury, has issued the city 

council with 15 infringement 

notices relating to odour 

breaches since the start of the 

year, with fines totalling $7000. 

Operator Waste Management 

was fined a further $4000. In 

January 2021, ECan served 

the city council an abatement 

notice ordering it to cease the 

“discharge of offensive and 

objectionable odour”.

Oystercatchers caught 

on Southshore Spit 

ENDANGERED South Island 

pied oystercatchers are being 

caught, marked and tagged on 

Southshore Spit Reserve to track 

their flight paths and protect 

them. 

The Department of Conservation, 

city council, Manaaki 

Whenua-Landcare Research and 

BirdsNZ want to learn about the 

birds’ flight paths to identify and 

protect their stopover sites. 

Staff were at the reserve last 

week as part of the nationwide 

project, tagging new birds to 

track. They use nets to catch the 

tōrea when they flock on the 

beach. The birds are then marked 

with identification bands that fit 

around the their leg. 

Some are also tagged with a 

small GPS device which sits on 

their back like a pack and relays 

results to researchers via the 

cellphone network. 

Tōrea are a challenge to manage 

and protect because they can 

spend up to 75 per cent of their 

lives outside managed reserve

Mazda CX-5 Activ – point of difference 

THERE’S NOTHING more 

satisfying than picking up an 

evaluation car and immediately 

being familiar with the layout 

and controls. 

That happened recently when 

I was scheduled into a Mazda 

CX-5 Activ, it has much the 

same interior design as the new 

Kiddie-family CX-30, along with 

the look and feel. Sure there are 

a few differences, but the point 

I’m making is Mazda builds 

similarity into all of its models, a 

simple concept that works well. 

However, if you are after a 

Mazda sport utility vehicle 

and want to get away from 

that familiarity – something 

just a little bit different to the 

mainstream – then the CX-5 

Activ is definitely the car to 

choose. It has trim details 

that are quite bold and aren’t 

included in the rest of the range. 

What’s more, the Activ is, as 

its name suggests, a model that 

will take you places off the seal. 

It has an additional four-wheeldrive 

mode that has power 

management protocols that will 

help enhance grip on slippery 

surfaces. 

The CX-5 Activ lists at $51,390 

and sits mid-way in a six-model 

CX-5 line-up, bearing in mind 

the series starts at $42,690 

for a 2-litre front-drive only 

model and ends at $64,690 

for a turbocharged 2.5-litre 

Takami. The Activ also gets the 

2.5-litre engine, but it is sans 

turbocharger, the naturally 

aspirated unit still pumps out 

a healthy 140kW and 252Nm, 

both realised at traditional 

parts of the rev band 4000 and 

6000rpm respectively. While 

these are healthy outputs, the 

performance doesn’t come at 

the cost of unnecessary fuel 

usage, the engine management 

structure keeps the revs down 

and it will happily haul in from 

almost idle speeds,. 

According to Mazda, the 

CX-5 models with the naturally 

aspirated engine are rated 

at 7.4-litres per 100km on a 

combined cycle average. My 

testing time yielded some 

interesting figures. I was 

fortunate to have the evaluation 

car for an entire week and 

during that time it was used a 

daily commute which produced 

a 9l/100km onboard average. On 

the highway that figure dropped 

to 7.8l/100km with 6l/100km 

showing instantaneously 

at 100km/h (engine speed 

2000rpm). 

Because drive is channelled to 

all four corners, the suspension 

is a fully independent system 

and it has spring and damper 

rates firmed only just slightly. 

Normally, I wouldn’t tackle 

anything off the seal in an 

evaluation car unless there was 

little choice and for a specific 

purpose. However, curiosity 

surrounding the Mi-Drive 

four-wheel-drive system got the 

better of me in the CX-5 Activ. 

There’s an open subdivision near 

Darfield with some undulating 

mounds of dirt that was neither 

taxing nor dirty, the CX-5 easing 

gently over the uneven terrain 

with decent ground clearance. 

I’ve always rated Mazda 

products highly, and now that 

my wife and I are fully fledged 

members of the Mazda family 

nothing has changed that 

opinion. I can categorically say 

that anyone who purchases a 

CX-5 Activ will be delighted 

with the purchase.
