God is With Us
Adapted from Luke 2:4-7
Joseph went to Bethlehem with Mary,
his betrothed, who was with child. 1 While
they were there, the time came for her to
have her child, and she gave birth to her
firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling
clothes and laid him in a manger, 2 because
there was no room for them in the inn.
Going to Bethlehem
Mary and Joseph had struggles on their way to
Bethlehem. They prayed to God that He would
always be near them. They asked Him to help them
on their way. When you need help, ask God to be
with you too! Act out the story with your teacher.
Mary and Joseph…
Emmanuel Prayer
Listen as your parent reads aloud, and
pray the prayer together.
Mary said yes to God. Did you
know that Joseph said yes
too? An angel came to him in
a dream and told him not to
be afraid. We know that God
is always with us, but we are
reminded of this especially
during the Christmas
season. Why? Because of
the name the angel gave
to Joseph: Emmanuel.
Emmanuel means “God is
with us.”
Pray: Jesus, Joseph had a
dream where an angel told him to not
be afraid and to give you the name, Emmanuel, God
is with us. Help me to remember that you are always with me in my
struggles and even when I don’t feel you close. I know that your
birthday is coming soon, help me to see the gifts that you would
like for me to give to you. I love you.
Amen.
GRADE K, SESSION 7
Talk About It!
What do you think Jesus might want for His birthday?
Jesus is always with us, but His body is in heaven. So we have
to give Him things by doing acts of love for others. Some ideas
could be saying hello to an elderly person at church, drawing a
picture for a neighbor, picking up toys without being asked, and
making time to talk with God. What can you give Jesus?
The Parable of the
Journey to Bethlehem
Workers in the Vineyard
Catechist Overview
This lesson introduces the journey Mary and Joseph might have taken on their way to Bethlehem
and the obstacles they must have faced before the birth of Jesus. We must be ready to face
obstacles on our faith journey. We must make time to pray to ensure that we do not do
this alone; knowing that God is always with us.
Session 7
A. Begin by asking if anyone
knows where Jesus was born. Wait
for hands to be raised. Accept:
Bethlehem. If no one knows the
answer, answer for the class. Have
them repeat the answer.
B. Explain that Mary and Joseph
did not live in Bethlehem, and then
ask if anyone knows the story about
how they traveled there. Explain
that they traveled by walking/taking
a donkey. They went because they
needed to be counted (a census
was issued by Roman Empire, which
meant everyone had to go to the
town where their family was from so
the government would know how
many people there were).
C. Read the Gospel passage aloud
to your students as they follow
along on the Listen and Respond:
Session 7
A. Let the class know
you will sing “Away in a
Manger.” If you do not know this
song, listen and we’ll sing it another
time. As you sing, make the
motions indicated.
Away in a manger
No crib for a bed (arms holding
baby)
The little Lord Jesus
Lay down His sweet head (lay
head down on hands to side)
The stars in the sky (put hands
in sky and move fingers like twinkling
stars)
Look down where He lay (move
hands down)
The little Lord Jesus
Asleep on the hay (lay head
down on hands to side)
Going to Bethlehem
Mary and Joseph had struggles on their way to
Bethlehem. They prayed to God that He would
always be near them. They asked Him to help them
on their way. When you need help, ask God to be
with you too! Act out the story with your teacher.
Mary and Joseph…
... went up and down hills... ... crossed rivers...
B. After singing the song two or
three times, tell the students: We
are going to tell the story of Mary
4 Walking with Jesus, Grade K
and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem with our words and actions. There were lots of obstacles or things that slowed
their journey, but they prayed and asked God to be with them.
C. Let the class know you will read the story on Make It Your Own: Going to Bethlehem. Read through it once
while the students look at the pictures.
Then show them the actions listed below. You will reread the story, and we can remember the actions together.
for places that could take
them in for the night. (Put
hands over eyes like you’re
looking far away.)
• They knocked doors (Make
a fist and pretend to knock
on a door.)
a different action to groups in
the class to make it easier to
remember)
When they arrived
at Bethlehem, they
looked for places
that could take them
in for the night...
D. Explain that Mary and Joseph
had a long and hard journey. It was
important to keep God close to them in this journey so they could have Him near them.
They knocked on
doors, but there was
no room for them
placed in the manger for His crib.
6 Walking with Jesus, Grade K
Heart of the Lesson: Connect this session’s activity to the season of Advent and growing closer to
Jesus. Sometimes our plans in our life do not always work out they way we think they will. For example:
maybe a friend cannot come to our house to play, or you could not go to a friend’s birthday party. God
gives us obstacles in our lives to keep us close to Him, to pray to Him and ask for His help. This isn’t a
sign that God is unhappy with us, but that He loves us. This Advent season, God wants us to grow even
closer to Him, let’s allow God to be with us and pray to Him when we have struggles in our life.
Emmanuel Prayer
Listen as your parent reads aloud, and
pray the prayer together.
Mary said yes to God. Did you
know that Joseph said yes
too? An angel came to him in
a dream and told him not to
reminded of this especially
during the Christmas
season. Why? Because of
Talk About It!
7
A. If possible, invite the parents to pick up their
children in your classroom. Before you close the session,
begin a discussion with your students. Ask for a
volunteer student to retell the scripture passage. Ask
another volunteer to explain what they learned from
the action story activity. Call on a final volunteer to
share an example from Going to Bethlehem.
B. Explain to your students the take-home activity.
They may recall from last session that Mary said yes
to God. Joseph did too! And Joseph always asked
God to be near to him as he made the difficult
journey to Bethlehem with Mary. In order to invite
God to be near us in our struggles, we should pray to
Him every day. Parents and students should pray the
Emmanuel Prayer daily, and think of what Jesus
would want for His birthday. Also, remind everyone
to color the second candle on their coloring page
from last week.
C. Distribute copies of Catechist
Resource: Advent Blessing and Prayer:
Second Sunday of Advent and prepare to
light your Advent wreath. Turn off lights and/or pull
down shades so it is dark. Have your students and
their parents gather around you while you prepare
to light the second candle on the Advent wreath.
You could ask one of the parents present to be the
leader, or you can serve as the leader. Pray together
the blessing on the page.
D. Close by singing O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,
or offer a prayer for the students and their families.
