Abara, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Abara of 215 West End Ave., Long Branch, helped rescue the survivors of a helicopter that crashed in the Ya Krong Bolah River, 12 miles south of Kontum, Vietnam, Airman Abara was on one of two Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Service HH-43 Huskie helicopter aircrews that plucked three U.S. Army personnel and a Red Cross worker from the jungle-bordered river. The rescue helicopters hovered low over the crash area to pul three servicemen from thi swift-flowing water. After a fou mile search, the crewmen located a woman passenger downstream on a rock in the river. The «u vivors were flown to the Kontum special forces camp where the injured were given emergency treatment and then taken to the Army hospital at Pleiku in ttn central Vietnamese highlands.
