Brooke Gladstone defining moment 2 Newark Academy the global speaker series Newark Academy’s groundbreaking Global Speaker Series brought five diverse and thoughtprovoking speakers to campus in the 2008-2009 school year. Each presentation served to inform, challenge and inspire us to think globally and appreciate the position of others. Brooke Gladstone, host and managing editor of NPR’s On the Media, explored “War Through a Soda Straw,” highlighting the challenges faced by journalists reporting on war and conflicts around the world. Rabbi David Forman, peace advocate and national columnist, discussed the Arab-Israeli conflict to help us understand its historical, political and religious context. Peter Fisher, managing director of BlackRock Fixed Income Portfolio and former under secretary of the U.S. Treasury for Domestic Finance, presented a fresh perspective on the global economic crisis. Arn Chorn Pond, founder of Cambodian Living Arts and internationally recognized human rights leader, recounted how he escaped death during the Cambodian “Killing Fields” genocide and how that experience shaped his life’s work as the leader of many Cambodian renewal projects and a supporter of young people in war-stricken regions. Sonia Nazario, Pulitzer Prize-winning author (Enrique’s Journey) and journalist for the Los Angeles Times, recounted the epic and harrowing journey of a young Honduran boy who, clinging to the sides and tops of freight trains, traversed two continents in search of his mother who came to the United States to work. Thousands of immigrants make this dangerous journey to America each year to reunite with loved ones. Newark Mayor Cory Booker delivered an inspirational keynote address, sprinkled with humor and passion. He was the speaker of choice for the Class of 2009 as he epitomizes NA’s core belief in the common pursuit of respect, scholarship, integrity and service to the greater community.
T defining moment the immersion experience program debuts with trip to pontevedra, spain Recognizing the unique value of direct learning experiences, Newark Academy students now have the opportunity to be involved in an intensive cultural or environmental exploration, developing an appreciation for and understanding of diverse cultures, peoples and perspectives in the world. Beginning with the Class of 2013, all students are required to successfully complete a two-week wilderness experience or a three-week linguistic or service immersion in a culture distinct from one’s own. Newark Academy is the first independent school in the U.S. to require this type of experience. defining moment beloved faculty member blackie parlin reaches 50th milestone Blackie Parlin joined Newark Academy in 1959 and quickly established himself as one of its leading faculty members. A distinguished U.S. historian and world class photographer, he is revered by the NA community. His tenure has been marked by his extraordinary teaching skills, his unmatched commitment to the school, his penetrating mind, the breadth of his interests and the depth of his concern for students and colleagues alike.
