Airman recognizes heroes back home BY RUTHANN CARR CORRESPONDENT Even when Senior Airman Jason Brown fl ies missions over Iraq and Afghanistan, his heart is fi rmly grounded in his Fork Union home. Brown, 28, grew up going to cookouts and Easter Egg hunts at the Fork Union Fire Station. His brother, Ryan Brown, has been a volunteer with the station since he was 15. So when the airman got a chance to show his appreciation for the people he considers hometown heroes, Brown took it. Brown presented Fork Union Fire Chief Jamie Baughn with an American fl ag that hung in the E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning Control System plane Brown fl ew on a reconnaissance mission on Sept. 11, 2011. “I wanted to let them know I appreciate what they do,” Brown said. Vaughn was amazed. “He’s fl ying over hostile territory and we’re watching TV,” he said. “It means a lot to us that he’s over there in Iraq and he’s thinking of us.” Brown even bought a special oak holder for the three- by fi ve-foot fl ag and commemorative certifi cate that accompanied it. The certifi cate reads: “Sept. 11, 2011 463rd Expeditionary Airborne Air Control Squadron. This fl ag fl ew on the 10th anniversary of the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 through hostile skies over Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom. This fl ag “It means a lot to us that he’s over there in Iraq and he’s thinking of us” – Jamie Baughn was fl own in honor of 343 of FDNY’s bravest who paid the ultimate sacrifi ce on that day. This fl ag also represents our dedication to duty in the vindication of the thousands of innocent people who perished.” Brown is stationed at Tinker Air Force base in Oklahoma City but was home on leave. He said he never knows when he might be called to action. Vaughn already has a special place picked out for the fl ag in the new fi rehouse. “We’ll have a display case built in at the main entrance,” he said. Final plans for the building will be chosen soon, and they expect to break ground in August, Vaughn said. “We’re looking forward to having some more room,” he said about the new station.
