No one was injured. The device was not a pipe bomb or any form of explosive, according to Lt. David R. Wells of the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Offi ce. Wells said the “multiple plastic bottles” contained some combination of chemicals that reacted together “to build pressure in the sealed bottles causing them to loudly burst.” Wells said, however, that “depending on the chemicals used, those type of devices can be very dangerous, but nowhere near as destructive as a pipe bomb.” The house is located near the golf course. Wells said he could not release more information about the incident because it is under investigation. Contact the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Offi ce if you have any information on this incident at 434-589-8211. – Carlos Santos Construction to begin on Rt. 53 roundabout in Fluvanna Construction is scheduled to begin this week on a roundabout at the intersection of Rt. 53 and Rt. 600 in Fluvanna County, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. The project, which will cost about $2 million, should be done by April 26 of next year. The project contractor, J.L. Kent & Sons Inc., of Spotsylvania, plans to begin construction activity as soon as Monday (July 23), VDOT said in a press release. According to VDOT: During the fi rst several weeks of construction motorists may encounter intermittent lane closures and fl agging operations as heavy equipment is moved into the construction site. The fi rst activities will include clearing and grading of the area south of Rt. 53. Traffi c will be maintained on Rt. 53 and Rt. 600 throughout construction. The work will be done in phases and traffi c will be shifted several times as construction progresses. Motorists should be alert for notice of upcoming traffi c shifts and follow signs and other traffi c controls. The roundabout will replace the current “T” intersection, which is controlled by a stop sign on Rt. 600. The project will also shift Rt. 53 to the south and realign both its approaches to eliminate sharp curves and improve sight distance. The roundabout and new alignment of Rt.53 will improve safety for motorists and allow traffi c to move more effi ciently through the intersection. Cash mob to strike at Fluvanna Do It Best Hardware Community members involved with Focus on Fluvanna’s Future are organizing a cash mob to meet at Fluvanna Do It Best Hardware on Saturday (July 28). Cash mobs target a particular business on which to spend money, helping the local economy as well as that particular business. A cash mob descended on E. W. Thomas earlier this month. This cash mob will meet at the hardware store at Crofton Plaza between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Members of the community associated with Focus on Fluvanna’s Future are organizing the event. Focus on Fluvanna’s Future is a grassroots group which wants to improve relations between citizens and local government “We are proud to bring this cash mob to Fluvanna’s Do It Best Hardware for the fi rst time,” according to a press release from Jon Carrier, a member of the group. “Recently, when Cuppa Joe’s coffee shop needed an air conditioner, Fluvanna Do It Best hardware gave no second thought to meeting the need of a local business. This is nothing new for the guys and girls of Fluvanna’s Do It Best. As the name states, Fluvanna Do It Best Hardware does everything to the best of their ability. Two years ago, when the massive snow storms swept across central Virginia, Do It Best Hardware not only remained open to customers without power, but one owner, Renny Megahan, gave his cell number out to the members of the local fi re department so they could have access to anything they needed to support the community in the days following those storms. He has made no bones about members calling him, no matter the time of day.” Lawsuit fi led against women’s prison A lawsuit was fi led in U.S. District Court in Charlottesville Tuesday (July 24) against the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women in Fluvanna County claiming that health care for the inmates is inadequate, according to The Daily Progress. Lawyers, including some from the Legal Aid Justice Center, fi led on behalf of fi ve incarcerated women. The suit says the health care standards are so low it violates the inmates’ Eighth Amendment rights protecting them from cruel and unusual punishment, the newspaper reported. “There have been some premature deaths that we are very concerned about,” said Legal Aid attorney Abigail Turner at a press conference in Charlottesville Tuesday. The suit, does not seek money, Turner said. The defendants are suing in hopes of improving health care standards at the prison. Reported fi rst on
