This lecture recital will reexamine both popular and lesser known solo piano works by these two great American composers. Included will be performances of Gershwin’s Variations on I Got Rhythm along with rarely heard transcriptions of his early player piano rolls and 1920s disc recordings. Dowling will also perform Gottschalk’s best known Civil War era virtuoso and sentimental works. Interesting historical background and personal anecdotes about both composers will be mixed with performances with an emphasis on the necessary and appropriate approach to the “authentic performance practice” required of this uniquely American piano repertoire. Mr. Dowling appears courtesy of Dowling Music. Presenter: Richard Dowling Maverick ......................................................3:30 - 4:30 PM Do We HAVE to Take Piano? (Motivating Collegiate Class Piano Students) Although some students view class piano as an opportunity to gain skills in an additional performance area, others dread the prospect. Those approaching the course with trepidation are often self-conscious about learning a new instrument and intimidated to perform in an area where they are less accomplished. So how can a teacher turn reluctant students into willing class participants and functioning pianists? Motivating students in a group setting has its challenges, but a quality teacher structures activities that stimulate interest and creativity.
