Welcome to “Over the Rainbow” – our 98 th State Convention! The Convention staff and steering committee, chaired by President-Elect Debra Hadfield, NCTM, have worked tirelessly to create a fabulous Convention experience for all of us! There is something for each and every one of you! Check your program book for details for each activity. Perhaps you might find your “pot of gold” at this Convention! The Jo Ann Dunn Fargason Memorial Concert is always one of the highlights of the TMTA Convention! On Thursday evening, you will hear amazing performances from the piano, flute, clarinet, violin, saxophone quartet, and our first-ever piano duet by our MTNA/TMTA Performance contest winners. Many of these students competed at the division and national levels. We have a plethora of talent in Texas, and this concert will prove that fact! To get the Convention started on Friday morning, the Younger Generation Chorus from Plano will perform inspiring music at the First General Session. TMTA is honored to welcome Dr. Bill Moore as our featured Keynote speaker. He is nationally and internationally known for his motivational sessions and has helped many professional athletes, performing artists and business leaders deal with the stress associated with performance and competition. Arsentiy Kharitonov, masters student of Joseph Banowetz, is the TMTA Convention guest artist and will perform an impressive piano recital on Friday evening. You will be awed as you listen to selections by Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Gershwin and Brahms. Ron Brand, Major League Scout with the New York Yankees, will motivate and encourage us at the worship service planned for Sunday morning. This Convention also hosts Richard Dowling, Gayle Kowalchyk and Helen Marlais, well-known performers/pedagogues, as they lead sessions that will inspire us to become better teachers! Don’t miss the Commissioned Composer selection by Scott McAllister entitled Tea for Three, performed by The Brazos Trio (Baylor University faculty members) late Sunday afternoon. The June Leondar Chamber Music/ Ensemble contest will feature many wonderful collaborative performances featuring piano duets, jazz ensembles and several varied chamber groups Saturday and Sunday mornings. Many more student performances are planned throughout the convention: original composition winners’ recital, performance contest semi-finals and finals for piano, vocal, instrumental and piano concerto, numerous ensemble concerts and a chamber music clinic. Teachers and students alike will want to attend the Arsentiy Kharitonov piano master class and the David Robinson vocal master class on Saturday morning. We welcome the Collegiate Conference on Sunday as our “teachers of tomorrow” explore teaching tips and participate in a special session on pre-collegiate group teaching led by Scott Donald and Forrest Kinney. Numerous awards will be given out to deserving students in the areas of Ensemble, Theory, Publication, Original Composition, Performance, World of Music and cumulative achievements for high school seniors. Many informative sessions and showcases are planned to enhance your teaching style, introduce you to new music, improve clarity and focus, and explain some of the TMTA programs offered for our students. Be sure to attend many of the lecture/recitals offered to learn more about the music of Gershwin, Haydn, C. P. E. Bach, Piazzolla and others. Once again, it is our intention that you walk away with your pot filled with many gold nuggets as you take advantage of all that is offered at this year’s TMTA Convention, “Over the Rainbow”!
