KEYWORDS: Pandanus odoratissimus linn, Carrageenan induced hind paw oedema, Cotton pellet induced INTRODUCTION granuloma. Pandanus odoritissimus linn (Pandanaceae) is a shrub with many aerial stilt roots and green leaves. It is commonly known as ‘Kewda’ or ‘Screwpine’ found distributed in river sides of seacoast of Indian peninsula, Andamans Island. It is distributed mostly in coastal districts of Ganjam, Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Keral and Gujarat. Traditionally the shrub is used for treatment of skin disorders, headache, inflammation and also for the treatment of rheumatic arthritis (Kirtikar et al., 1975). The present investigation evaluated the anti- inflammatory activity of Pandanus odoratissimus linn whole plant extract against carrageenan induced rat paw oedema, against mediator induced inflammation and against the cotton pellet induced granuloma in rats (Kabimani et al., 1996). MATERIALS AND METHODS Pandanus odoratissimus linn was collected near our college, Mohuda, Berhampur, Orissa and was authenticated by comparing with herbarium specimen preserved in the museum of Biology Department, College of Pharmaceutical Sciences (CPS), Berhampur, India. Preparation of the Acetone Extract ISSN: 2229-3787 The shade dried whole plant materials were collected and was reduced to 60 mesh powder. The powder was extracted using sohxlet apparatus with acetone and the yield was found to be 7.36gms per 61
