2.5lt. The extract was subjected to preliminary photochemical screening (Alcaraz et al., 1988; Arrigoni, 1977; Della et al., 1986) and finally confirmed through TLC. Animals Wistar strain rats of either sex (150 – 180 gm) were obtained from animal house, CPS, Berhampur and maintained under standard conditions (temperature: 23 ± 2 0 C, relative humidity: 55 ± 10% and 12 hour light and dark). They were allowed standard laboratory feed (Hindustan Lever Co. Bombay, India) and water ad libitum. The principles of laboratory animal cares (NIH, 1985) guide lines were followed. The study was approved by the institutional animal ethical committee. Anti-inflammatory Activity Carrageenan induced inflammation The anti-inflammatory activity of acetone fraction of Pandanus odoratissimus linn (AFPO), dissolved in 0.5% w/v sodium carboxyl methyl cellulose in distilled water was examined in healthy Wistar strain rats of either sex weighing between 150 to 180 gm by carrageenan induced hind paw oedema method (Winter et al., 1962; Mukherjee et al., 1997; Gupta et al., 2010; Kulkarni et al., 2009) using phenyl butazone (100 mg/kg) suspended in 0.5% w/v sodium carboxy methyl cellulose, in distilled water as reference drug for activity comparison, fallowing oral administration at different dose levels as stated in Table 1. The test samples in their respective doses were administered orally to experimental rats one hour prior to the administration of carrageenan. Carrageenan induced hind paw oedema was measured plethysmographically 0 hr and 3hr after its Available online at www.pharmresfoundation.com administration. The antiinflammatory effect was expressed as percent inhibition of oedema (Radha et al., 1988). Table 1. Autocoids induced inflammation The mediator induced inflammation (Parmar et al., 1978) with phlogestic agents (autacoids) e.g. histamine (1mg ml -1 ) & serotonin (1mg ml -1 ) was studied (Table 2 &3) and the antiinflammatory effect were expressed as percent inhibition of oedema (Radha et al., 1988). Cotton pellet induced granuloma Cotton pellet induced granuloma was made after shaving the fur, the rats (n=6) were, anaesthetized and 10 mg of sterile cotton pellets were inserted one in each axilla of rats. Extracts (250 & 500 mg kg -1 ) phenyl butazone (100 mg kg -1 ) and control vehicle 62

was administered orally for 7 consecutive days from the day of cotton pellet implanted. The animals were anaesthetized on 8 th day and cotton pellets were removed surgically & made free from extraneous tissues. Table 2.
