THOMAS SCHNABEL white_cap Although a stable bone-implant interface remains an important factor in the long-term success of implant therapy, the reestablishment of anatomical structures and natural tissue contours becomes more and more of interest. This particularly applies to restoring anterior implant esthetics in partially edentulous areas. The interimplant and dento-implant gingiva, composed of the facial and lingual papillae and the col, is a critical and unique area both from an anatomical and esthetical point of view. New FRIADENT ® EsthetiCap custom healing abutments with zirconium oxide have been introduced to facilitate the support of peri-implant tissues. The close relationship between the contact, contour and the shape of teeth, creating the interproximal space for the interdental papilla, has been studied by numerous authors 1 . These studies show the importance of recreating an interproximal area that will provide adequate space for interdental gingiva. Food impaction can be minimized, phonetic problems as well as cosmetic deformities can be avoided and ideal hygiene is provided 2 . Tarnow et al. 3 were

the first to mention the vertical distance between the contact point of teeth and the crest of bone as the determining factor for the presence or absence of the interproximal papillae in humans. He demonstrated that if the vertical distance from the base of the contact point to the crest of bone was 5 mm or less, the papilla was present almost 100% of the time. Only few data are available on the interproximal anatomy of endosseous implants and teeth and its influence on the formation of papillae 6 . Since the presence and contour of underlying bone determines the shape of soft tissue, Tarnow´s findings should be evaluated and proven for the reconstruction and maintenance of the dento-implant papillae 4,5 . The aim of this study 5 was to determine the contribution of the vertical dis- tance between contact point and the crest of bone and the horizontal distance between tooth and implant on the presence or absence of the dento-implant papilla in humans. The goal is to evaluate anatomical requirements for a pre- dictable, non-surgical papillae regeneration in single-unit implant restorations. light_19
