Downtown Happenings - Summer fun for everyone! Tree Party The Park Rapids Downtown Business Association will sponsor Music on Main events and invites you to celebrate summer with us. Music on Main will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays from June 21 through Aug. 16 with great music and a beer garden with snacks on 2nd Street between Main Avenue and Highway 71. Brian Skinness of Terrapin Station has assisted in lining up the following bands for these events: June 21 - Circle of Heat Circle of Heat is a Minneapolis-based band filled with lots of talent. Made up of four graduates of the University of Minnesota School of Music, their shows have a heavy focus on musicality and improvisation, and they are able to blend styles and put on a completely different show every time they play. Everything from blues to classic rock and funk to jazz are fused into an original style with a familiar feel. Circle of Heat uses instrumentation to create unique sounds, from the southern feel of a slide guitar to the occasional addition of an electric viola. With progressive rock drums underneath quirky and clean vocal harmonies, no song sounds the same. And with the release of their debut album right around the corner, Circle of Heat shows no signs of slowing down in 2012. June 28 - Good Noise Hailing from Bemidji, this high energy five-piece band puts their own twist on classic favorites that span a wide range of musical styles: vocals and guitar, Eric Carlson; vocals and keys, Katie Houg; vocals, cello and saxophone, Brett Cease; drums, Mark Bauer and electric violin, Jordan Lindquist. July 5 - Tree Party Tree Party tips their hats to the roots of country music, covering the likes of Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, Gillian Welch, Webb Pierce and Willie Nelson. Stemming from their small, humble hometowns (including Park Rapids) and evolving in the hub of Minneapolis, Tree Party makes those old songs feel young again. Their first original album, self-titled and hot-iron branded, took on Western motifs and Midwest themes, while their following album evolved over a year collaborating with “The 7-Shot Symphony,” an epic, live cowboy show. Tree Party has all the basics for an old-time country band: Rockabilly upright bass, fiddling, four-party harmonies, and of course, a little bit of yodeling. Band members are Joey Ford, Jenna Wyse, Travis Bolton and Andy Carroll. Tree Party will also play with “Switch” at the rodeo dances July 4th and 6th. July 12 - The Color Pharmacy The Color Pharmacy is a powerful trio with some great original music. They are out of the cities, but have played Terrapin Station in Nevis on a couple of occasions and were featured by Lakeland TV when they played there. They were at SXSW in Austin, TX in March and played a show hosted by Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins. They are gaining some national attention, but still accessible for the time being. July 19 - Matt Ray & Those Damn Horses Out of the Iron Range, another great crowd pleasing six-piece Bluegrass band. They are making a big stir at regional festivals. July 26 - Patchouli Long, time area favorite who plays each year at Itasca State Park and basically tours throughout the year, Patchouli winters and plays in Florida during the cooler months. This sunshiny duo has a good local following. July 27 - Bite of Park Rapids (11 a.m.-8 p.m. line up to be announced) Aug. 2 - Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank This duo of brothers from the Duluth area have a great rootsy Americana style, good for dancing with a nice bluesy feel. They are often featured on KAXE Northern Community Radio out of Grand Rapids (now in conjunction with KBXE out of Bemidji). Aug. 9 - Thankful Dirt Darren and Molly Matthews, the Indie/Americana Des Moines-based duo Thankful Dirt, developed their musical artistry steeped in Iowa’s music scene, a scene as fertile as Iowa soil. Though their musical backgrounds differ, electricity sparks when they write and perform songs. Molly’s voice - ethereal, complex, and evocative - complements Darren’s masterful guitar playing. Together, they ignite a sound both unique and universally appealing. Aug. 16 - Youth Music & Arts Showcase Concert (musicians to be announced) The Park Rapids Downtown Business Association is seeking sponsors and volunteers for each night’s events. If your business is interested, please contact Uzi Monka, Event Committee chair, at 218-237-9800 or Lu Ann Hurd-Lof at 218-652-4081.
