2.4 continued METHOD

2.4 continued METHOD CONTENT RESOURCES ANSWER If natural gas is used to directly heat water, greenhouse gas savings are in the order of 4 tonnes a year, compared to conventional electric water heating. EXERCISE Q: Which hot water system would you recommend based only on its greenhouse gas emissions? ANSWER A: Solar-gas system. Page 8 Gas Space Heating STATE / READ The chart in Figure 5 on page 8 of your Workbook compares the amounts of greenhouse gases (CO 2) released annually by different central and space heating systems when heating a typical new home. STATE / READ The most economical space heaters in terms of running costs are either: • High efficiency (5-6 stars) natural gas heaters; • High efficiency (3-4 stars) reverse cycle air conditioners; or • Off-peak electric storage fan heaters. It is always important to cover all options with your customer to meet their requirements and to help them make an informed decision. 2.5 ENERGY LABELLING – FROM OLD TO NEW Reference: Information Manual Section 2 METHOD CONTENT RESOURCES 5 minutes ENERGY LABELLING – FROM OLD TO NEW STATE / READ The Energy Rating label for electrical appliances has been in operation for more than 10 years. Over that ANSWER time continuous improvements in appliance performance have resulted in star ratings clustering at the top of the range. Changes to the electrical Energy Rating label introduced in October 2000 mean that energy performance is now measured against tougher criteria, so most appliances now get a lower star rating than before for the same W/B 7 W/B 8 W/B 8

2.5 continued METHOD CONTENT RESOURCES energy consumption. But the principle stays the same – the more stars the more energy efficient the appliance, and the performance of the appliance is the same. Changing to a tougher standard means that the label now provides a more meaningful guide to consumers and encourages manufacturers to keep improving the energy efficiency of appliances. By law, from 1 October 2000 all star rated electrical appliances on display for sale must carry the revised Energy Rating label. Warehouse stock may continue to carry the original label until 1 October 2001 and for air conditioners until 1 October 2002. Remember the Energy Rating on gas appliances has not changed and you will find that top star rated appliance will be up around the 5 to 6 star mark. It is important that you are aware of the changes to the Energy Rating label for electrical appliances as you will be at the forefront to answer consumer questions in regard to the changes. The two key information features of the new label that are the same as the old label are: SHOW Features that remain the same DISCUSS 1. The Star rating showing the energy efficiency of the appliance on a scale of 1 to 6. 2. The Energy Consumption showing how much energy the appliance is expected to use annually (except for air conditioners which shows expected per hour use). EXERCISE Groups of 2 to 3. Using Section 2 of the Information Manual identify the changes to the new label. Lead to: SHOW Changes to the New Label ANSWER 1. Half stars are now shown; 2.
